Chapter Seven
The following day, Donatello was in the Dojo area doing hardcore exercises under the watchful eye of Master Splinter.
After he arrived home, Splinter had scolded Donatello for making him and his brothers worry and asked where he had been.
Donatello gave the same story, and luckily Splinter didn't ask him any more questions, but he was told he had to do two hours of cardio exercise as punishment before breakfast.
"Yame!" Splinter barked and Donatello stood up and bowed.
"Your punishment is over!" Splinter said tapping his green cane.
"Thank you, Sensei." Donatello said breathlessly "And I'm sorry Sensei."
Splinter nodded his head.
"You are forgiven my son." He said "Now, go and get showered, and have some breakfast!"
Donatello nodded and quickly went to get showered.
Once he was clean and freshened up, the purple masked turtle went to his room and sat on his bed.
He picked up a small wooden box from under his bed and opened it, inside were the purple bow tie, and the flower, after he had returned home, he had hidden them in this little box, his private box filled with things he considered precious and he wanted to feel them again, once again to remind himself it was no dream.
"I wish I had gotten the name of that witch." He said to himself "I wish I could have thanked her properly; I wonder if I'll ever see her again?"
He jumped out of his shell when he heard a rapping on his door.
"Hey Donnie! You in there?" he heard Raphael's voice "You coming out for breakfast?"
Donatello quickly put the items back in the box and jumped up before placing it under his bed.
"Coming Raph!" he called as he stood up and walked to the door, the smell of eggs and toast filling his nose.
At the breakfast table, Donatello ate his eggs in silence as the others tucked in. Michelangelo was stuffing his face eagerly and Raphael and Leonardo were deep in conversation.
"I wonder how April's Prom went last night?" Leonardo asked, "I bet she had a lovely time!"
"Kinda sucked we couldn't be there to enjoy it with her." Michelangelo groaned with a mouthful of toast.
"Yeah, real pity, but I'm sure we can join her next time at Halloween." Raphael suggested.
"That's true!" Leonardo agreed "Remember the Halloween Ball last year?"
"Oh yeah! That was a laugh!" Raphael chuckled.
Donatello looked back at his eggs and wondered what happened after he left the Prom, he remembered one of April's friends following him, and then lost him, he wondered what he told April when he got back, and how April must have felt.
"I wish I could have told her it was me all along." He thought to himself, "But…how would she had reacted? Would she have been surprised? Or angry even?" he sighed and put down his fork losing his appetite.
"You okay Donnie?" Leonardo asked.
"I'm fine." Donatello replied "Just…not hungry anymore."
"After that hardcore cardio Sensei put you through?" Raphael asked in surprise.
"I'll be alright Raph." Donatello replied then jumped as his T-Phone bleeped and he snatched it up.
"It's April!" he announced, "Saved by the bell." He thought.
"She's coming over." He continued "More than likely to tell us how her night went!"
"Sweet!" Michelangelo cried, putting the last piece of egg and toast into his mouth.
About half an hour later, April was in the lair telling the turtles and Splinter what happened at the Prom.
She told them about Casey cancelling on her due to the last minute due to illness.
"Awww, I'm sorry about that!" Leonardo sighed.
"Sucks!" Michelangelo groaned.
"How is he?" Raphael asked, concerned for his friend.
"He's okay." April replied, "I called him this morning, he's still not a hundred per cent, but he was glad I had a good time."
"So you had no date?" Michelangelo asked, "That must have been hard."
"Not really!" April said with a soft smile "I had friends there, such as Mona, Liz and Raymond, they kept me company for a while, at least until I met someone."
"Met someone?" the turtles asked.
Donatello felt his heart beat faster.
"She's going to mention me!" he thought excitedly "She's going to mention who she danced with!"
"Who did you meet April?" Splinter asked curiously.
April took a deep breath.
"I'm not sure, I'd never seen him in my life, yet I felt like I had known him before." She said, "I asked my friends if they knew him, but they didn't."
"A mystery man at the ball!" Michelangelo grinned "Like a male Cinderella."
"Be quiet Mikey!" Raphael snapped "Carry on, April." He spoke.
April nodded and carried on, speaking about the boy she had danced with, what he looked like and how they had talked together and danced together.
"He was a nerd for sure, yet so gentle and listened to me." She ended "I felt a connection with him, like something I never felt before with Casey."
Everyone went quiet, and Donatello felt his spirits rise.
"She felt a connection!" he thought "A connection with me! I knew we could be together if we weren't so different! I knew it!"
April then started to get dreamy.
"He was so handsome, and when we danced, it was like it was just me and him together, nothing else existed in the world, the way he held me, I felt safe." She then ran her fingers over her lips.
"And we kissed…" she ended.
She looked at the turtles who were grinning, Donatello's smile was so wide every tooth in his mouth could be seen and Splinter has even shed a tear.
"Whoa…" Michelangelo breathed "You met your Prince Charming that night, or at least, your Prince Cinderella."
Raphael said nothing as he looked at April.
"Sounds like the perfect night!" Leonardo said.
"So…awesome." Donatello breathed, the same pure feeling of happiness he had felt returning to him.
He wanted to run up to April and confess right there and then that he had been the mystery boy she had danced with, and kissed, but he didn't dare, he had to keep up appearances.
"What was the boy's name?" Splinter asked.
It was then April looked down ashamed.
"I…I never got his name." she said, "He left the prom before I could ask him, I tried to find out when I realised, but he had gone."
The turtles sighed in disappointment, and Splinter looked saddened for April.
"All that time you talked and danced, and you never learnt his name?" Michelangelo asked.
"I know, so stupid of me." April sighed "All I have is a couple of pictures of him that Raymond managed to get of us when we were dancing, as well as the memories of last night…and his kiss."
She placed her fingers on her lips and a couple of tears fell as she brought up the photographs Raymond had taken last night and showed the turtles and Splinter.
Donatello stood up and walked over to April placing a paw on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry you never found out who he was." He spoke.
April looked up at him, and the tears fell again and before Donatello knew it, she leaned on his chest and hugged him, sobbing softly.
Donatello instantly put his arms around comfortingly.
"Awww, there there." Donatello comforted "It's okay, it's gonna be okay."
The other turtles and Splinter also walked over to offer comfort and Leonardo studied the photos.
"I asked all the students at the prom, and the teachers there if they had seen him before, but they had no idea." April wept "So I got no clues to who he is, or even where he is now, but one thing I know is I'll never listen to the songs 'Symphony' or 'How do I live' without thinking of him."
"I am so sorry April." Splinter soothed stroking April's hair as she continued to hug Donatello.
"It's okay." April sighed as she wiped her eyes and blew her nose "I just wish I could have learnt more about him before he left."
Donatello hugged April close, still wishing with all his being he could tell her that her mystery boy was holding her right now, but he couldn't.
"Never say never April." He comforted "You may see him again."
April sniffed and looked up at Donatello.
"How can you be sure?" she asked.
Donatello bit his lip.
"I don't know I…" he paused.
Leonardo looked at the photos.
"Maybe we could look for him? We'll search the city? See if we can find him?" he used April's phone to send the photos to his brother's T-Phones.
Donatello felt a smile within, now he had the photos, he could look at them and see his human form the witch had granted him, and he could print the photos off and put them in his box.
April hugged Donatello again then sat back.
"Thanks guys." She managed a weak smile "But I guess I'll never know who he was, or where he came from, I got memories of him, and that will never leave me, but I won't tell Casey about him."
"And neither will we." Leonardo promised "You have our word and honour!"
Raphael and Michelangelo agreed.
Donatello patted April's shoulder.
"Not a word." He promised.
"Thanks!" April smiled at her mutant friends then stood up.
"I better get home." She said, "Thanks for listening to me."
"No problem, April." Splinter smiled "I am really happy you had a good night last night!"
The other turtles agreed, and Donatello offered to walk April to the surface which she happily agreed, and they walked out of the lair together.
After five minutes, they reached the surface and April turned to Donatello.
"Thanks for walking me back." She smiled despite her tears.
"Anything for you April." Donatello replied and wiped her tears "And remember, you know you can always talk to me if you need it alright?"
"I know." April said then she hugged Donatello around the neck tightly "I love you so much Don, you're the best friend I know."
Donatello felt tears in his own eyes as he heard that, and he hugged April back.
"I love you too April," he replied, "I'm always there for you, no matter what!"
April then kissed his cheek and stepped back.
"Thank you, Don." She said, "I'll see you later." She then slid from Donatello's embrace and walked away to get to the surface.
Donatello watched her leave then turned to walk back to the sewers.
As April walked away, she bit her lip, then frowned as if realising something, she turned around to see Donatello walking back into the darkness of the tunnels back to the lair.
As she had hugged him, both before in the lair and just now, she had felt the same feeling as she did last night, when she was in the arms of the mystery boy when they danced, safe, protected, loved even.
Frowning and running her hands over her arms, then over her lips, she tried to think clearly, the embrace she felt from Donatello was similar!
"No…" she thought "It couldn't have been! It can't have been! It's impossible."
Meanwhile, Donatello walked back to the sewers, his heart beating in his chest.
He wished with all his might he could tell April that he was the one who danced with her last night, but again he knew he couldn't, she would never believe him, and he couldn't tell his brothers and sensei the truth either.
But what he did know for sure, was that what happened at the prom was real, and his dream had come true. He had been April's date to the Prom, he had danced with her, and kissed her and learnt how she really felt about his personality, even though he was under a human disguise.
He felt content knowing that if he was human, he would have had a chance with her, he would have been her Prince Charming, her knight in shining armour, her dream boy, and he got to experience it for one night.
"As much as it breaks my heart April will never know." Donatello thought to himself "at least I take comfort that I got to know her real feelings, and I got to get close to her and live my dream and I will treasure the memories for as long as I live!"
He walked back to the lair with a skip in his steps.
"I lived my dream, my greatest wish for one night, and I'll forever remember it, until my dying day!"
The End
Awww, such sweet moments! Though some were a little sad.
So April has informed everyone of what happened at the prom, and still has no idea that the mystery boy she danced with is right in front of her, but a human turtle. Yet as she was leaving after embracing Donatello, she might be starting to realise something?
Meanwhile, Donatello, as much as he wanted to tell her, he knew he couldn't, it's a secret he has to keep to himself, but at least he has the memories of that magical night.
And that's the end of Donatello's Wish! I hope you enjoyed it! Although, would some of you have liked it if I wrote that Donatello told April the truth as well tell his brothers and Sensei what happened and show them the evidence? Or do you think this was the better ending where the secret stays secret.
Well, let me know in the comments! And I will see you in the next story! Bye! xxx
