Prologue - Part 6

I woke up in a cold sweat after that last dream. I wasn't scared, per se, but I was definitely unsettled. As I heard a voice start to speak, I looked over at the TV screen and realized just what had woken me up.

The screen displayed Monokami and Monomausu sitting side by side on a small couch. Monokami had a bag of chips in his lap and was shovelling them down- how is he even eating those?- while Monomausu tried to speak.

"G-Good morning, campers!" He said. Crunch. "As it is now 7AM, our day will-" Crunch. "-commence! E-Everyone, please gather in the caf-"

Monokami's crunching got too loud and Monomausu was cut off.

"What, are you mute?" Monokami cackled. "Everyone gather in the cafeteria by 8AM! Be there or be square!"

"Guys, don't be shocked or anything," Tatsuo said groggily, "but I'm starting to like Monomausu better than Monokami."

"Monokami is a dick," agreed Aratani. "He's not a very good camp director. I mean, did you see him wolfing down those chips when Monomausu tried to speak? He was barely squeaking along."

Miku and Miyo giggled and even Tatsuo couldn't contain her snickers, but everyone else was silent.

"Why do I even try?" Aratani huffed, grabbing her clothes and leaving the cabin.

"I don't know why she tries," Scarlett scoffed, grabbing her clothes and doing the same.

Since I had already showered the night before, I grabbed my suit and changed in the side room. Breakfast in an hour, huh? That means I've got some time to kill…

I left the cabin just in time to see Hoshi leaving his. He stopped upon seeing me and gave me a friendly wave.

"Ah, Miss Kurakawa. What a pleasure," Hoshi said with a smile. "I was just about to prepare breakfast so it would be ready by eight."

"I see. What are you making?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"Ah, I was going to make a traditional American breakfast. It's on of my favourites- eggs, bacon and toast. That reminds me, how do you want your eggs?" He asked. "I was going to ask anyone I passed- plus the others in my cabin, of course- and do scrambled eggs for everyone else."

I frowned. "I'm not sure, I'm not too familiar with different styles of egg. I suppose I'd be fine with scrambled. Aratani and Scarlett seemed to be heading to the showers, in case you wanted to ask them when they were done."

Hoshi nodded. "I see, thank you. I'll be on my way."

With that, he headed to the cafeteria.

Well, he's taken to being kidnapped well, I observed. He's already falling into a routine. Has everyone just magically forgotten about trying to escape?

I hadn't, of course, so I decided to do another perimeter check of the invisible barrier in case I had missed anything the first time. I grimaced as it vibrated under my palm but I started moving along it all the same.

"What are you doing?" Asked a curious voice.

I turned my head to see Tatsuo staring at me from the campfire, confused. She stood up and headed over to me.

"There's an invisible wall here," I informed her. "I was checking to see if there were any gaps or weak spots."

"Oh! Can I help?" She asked earnestly.

"Sure," I said with a shrug. "Just go the opposite direction of me. We'll meet in the middle."

Tatsuo nodded, touching her hand to the invisible barrier and immediately recoiling. "Eurgh! That feels so strange!"

"Deal with it if you want to help," I said.

"You don't have to be so rude about it," Tatsuo huffed, but she pressed her hand back to the barrier and started to walk around.

I did the same but in the opposite direction, deciding to ignore anyone who waved at me on the way. I wasn't in the mood for socializing.

I was quite irritated when I didn't find Tatsuo where she should have been, but I decided to complete the circle anyways. However, just a few minutes later, I saw Tatsuo crouching with both of her hands pressed against the barrier.

"What did you find?" I asked, moving away from the barrier and walking over to her.

"Look at this part of the wall," she said, gesturing vaguely at a section of the barrier. "And feel it. It's almost wobbly."

I touched the section she was pointing to and I realized she was right. It vibrated more but had a looser, thinner texture than the rest of the wall. It was actually pretty disconcerting. I looked closely at it and it looked like it was shimmering or flickering, somehow.

"Maybe we can break it!" Tatsuo suggested excitedly.

"Perhaps. We need someone stronger to test it out, though. Because of our Ultimates, I'm sure we've got some strength built up, but we simply need someone stronger." I paused, thinking for a moment, and then let out a sigh-groan when I realized who that had to be.

"Oh, I know who we can ask!" Tatsuo said with a grin. "Ura!"

"He is pretty big," I sighed. "He's our best bet. There's no telling how strong this thing is, but if we all work together, we should be able to get through."

"Alright!" Tatsuo said. "I'll go get- oh, crap!"

I frowned. "What?"

"We forgot breakfast!"

"Shit, you're right. It'll probably be starting soon. We can ask Kohaku later," I said. We both turned and started running towards the cafeteria.

We burst open the doors to see everyone already sitting down.

"Leona and Tatsuo," Raiu greeted. "I must say, you are an unlikely pair. We were wondering where you two were."

"Unlike all of you, we were-" I was about to tell them what we had been doing, but I snapped my mouth shut upon seeing Monokami and Monomausu. "Anyways, it doesn't matter. Is the food ready?" I asked, heading over to the table I had sat at for dinner the night before, where Hiroshi, Ayami, Raiu and Scarlett were all sitting.

"Not yet," Hiroshi said. "What were you two doing?"

"We were doing another perimeter check," I said, lowering my voice. "And we found something strange and potentially important for an escape. Come with me after breakfast and I'll show you- only Hiroshi, though. I don't want us to look suspicious, in case Monokami and Monomausu decide to punish us for trying to escape."

Everyone nodded, except for Scarlett, who just shrugged. "I still think you're idiotic for trying to escape this place when clearly we came by our own will, but go off."

"I'm going to choose to ignore Redhead over there," I said. "I think listening to her for any longer will make my brain rot."

"Hey!" Scarlett said.

Hoshi brought out everyone's food soon after, serving plates full of a traditional American breakfast. It was nothing fancy- he wasn't a professional chef, after all- but it looked good all the same. I took my time eating since that seemed to be what everyone else was doing, as I wasn't starving like I had been yesterday. The meal was actually quite tasty.

"Why are you here?" I asked Monokami once I had finished. "You never show up- usually, it's only Squeaky McGee over there. Also, you're both just… standing there."

"I'm here to make sure Monomausu doesn't mess anything up," Monokami said, before stage whispering, "he's not the brightest mouse in the world."

"H-Hey, that's mean!" Monomausu protested. "A-And the reason w-we're here is so we can take you to the l-lodge for daily crafts after you've finished eating!"

"Y-You were s-serious a-about that..?" Lado asked.

"Awesome!" Miku cheered. "I'm super excited!"

"Me too," Miyo agreed with a smile.

"Your excitement is infectious," chuckled Tatsuo.

"Glad to see at least some people are excited," Zara mumbled.

"I have no reason to stick around for your ridiculous 'crafts,' " Sayin scoffed. "That just sounds childish."

"I-I'm afraid it i-isn't optional," Monomausu told us. "C-Crafts are great bonding activities!"

"Yeah, so you kids better show up!" Monokami said. "Or else-"

Monomausu prodded Monokami in the side. "Monokami! D-Don't threaten the c-campers!" He chided.

"Whoops! I forgot I couldn't be mean to you guys yet!" Monokami cackled.

"Yet?" Kaoru repeated with a frown.

"Well, there's no reason for me to be here anymore!" Monokami said. "Monomausu can take you all to the lodge. Bye-bye!"

With that, he disappeared.

I frowned. Monokami had made so many slip-ups by now, it seemed like he was doing it deliberately. But what's he hinting at? I wondered. He gives us just enough information to keep us wondering, but never enough to tell us anything.

"I-Is everyone done eating?" Monomausu asked, waiting for everyone to nod. "Okay! If-If you could all follow me, please…"

He turned and walked out of the cafeteria, and I reluctantly got up and we all followed after him. Aratani was talking to Miku and Miyo— the only people who seemed to laugh at her jokes— and it made the short walk insufferable.

Finally, we reached the lodge and Monomausu led us all inside and towards the arts and crafts section. Since there were two seats at every table, I paired up with Ayami, since Hiroshi had oddly paired up with Seiko. Maybe they became friends, I thought with a shrug. Their talents can both involve music.

We were supposed to draw something we liked and then show it to everyone as an icebreaker, but Ayami and I didn't put much effort into our drawings. I made a quick sketch of a dog and I couldn't quite tell what she was drawing. It didn't help that she never elaborated on it after showing everyone the drawing.

Finally, Monomausu let us leave. I regrouped with Hiroshi and Tatsuo and we went to stop Kohaku before he left.

"Ura!" Tatsuo greeted, making him turn.

"What is it, peasant?" Kohaku asked. He didn't say it unkindly, but it sure sounded condescending.

"We need the help of a mage king," Tatsuo said with a grin. "We might have a way of getting out of here."

"I see…" Kohaku replied, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Alright, I will give you my assistance."

"Thank you," Hiroshi said. "Follow us."

Tatsuo and I led them to the spot in the barrier that seemed weaker than the rest of it. Hiroshi and Kohaku both felt it and were surprised when they noticed the odd texture.

"I'm not sure how I missed it the first time around," I said with a frown. "But I'm glad we found it. I was thinking we should all shove against it as hard as we can to make it break— and brace yourselves, it may hurt. We don't know what it's made of."

"Right," Hiroshi said, before chuckling. "I don't mean to laugh, but this is like something straight out of an action movie."

"It is!" Tatsuo agreed. "I hope this works in real life…"

We all got in a line and, on the count of three, shoved against the barrier as hard as we could.

Nothing but some sore shoulders.

We tried again and then two more times after that to no avail. It had seemed weaker, but in practice, it clearly wasn't.

"They weren't messing around when they built this thing," I said. "It seems like they were determined to keep us in at any cost."

"That's right!"

We all turned to see Monokami standing behind us.

"You campers shouldn't be trying to escape!" He chided. "Hmph… maybe I should make that clear and have the announcement a day early!" He tilted his head at us. "What do you all think?"

"What announcement?" Kohaku asked. "Furthermore, you have trapped us in this area without our consent. You should expect us to try and escape."

"Puhuhuhu, how right you are, Kingie!" Monokami said. "I'm in a fun mood, so I'm going to make the announcement right now! I'm sure you'll all try and escape more afterwards… but oh well! It was inevitable!"

"You've brought up the announcement before," I said. "What is it, exactly?"

"You'll find out very soon!" Monokami assured me. "Let's just say it'll make your time here at Camp Hope a little more… interesting! And more fun, in my opinion!"

I groaned. "Surely you're not making us do more stupid, childish activities?"

Monokami tilted his head. "I wouldn't call it childish," he said. "There probably aren't very many five year olds going out and doing this! Although, there were those two ten year olds…"

"Get to the point already," Hiroshi said with a frown. "Just tell us what the announcement is."

"Puhuhuhu, whatever you say!" Monokami said before disappearing.

Only a moment later, his voice played through a loudspeaker from nearby.

"Everyone, please make your way to the lodge for a very important announcement! You're all gonna want to be there for this!"

We all glanced at each other, only waiting a few seconds before heading to the lodge with no idea what awaited us.

"Everyone, take a seat!" Monokami said as everyone filed into the lodge. "You'll want to sit down for this, puhuhuhu!"

"When did he get the evil laugh?" Kaoru asked as he entered the building.

"About five minutes ago. It's really annoying," Tatsuo informed him.

"M-Monokami…" Monomausu said as everyone took a folded chair and sat down. "A-are you s-sure… are y-you s-sure that w-we should b-be saying this so e-early? C-Can't we g-give them some more t-time?"

Somehow, he seemed even more nervous than usual, and he was stuttering a lot more.

"D-D-Don't b-be a p-p-party p-pooper, M-M-M-M-Monomausu!" Monokami fake-stuttered, whacking his fellow 'camp director' over the head. "Better to tell them sooner rather than later! Who cares if they've had enough time to have fun and make friends?"

"I-I can't w-watch this…" Monomausu sniffled. "I-I'm s-sorry, campers…" He disappeared only a moment later.

"What a wimp!" Monokami cackled, turning to face all of us and waddling up to the microphone. "Now, who's ready for theeee…. killing game?!"

Everyone was silent.

"Aw, come on, guys! No reaction?" Monokami crossed his arms and pouted.

"What are you even talking about?" Aratani asked. "What does that mean? Is that some kind of weirdly named camp game you're forcing us to partake in?"

"Wellll, I guess you could say that, seeing as it is a game and you are all at camp," Monokami amended, nodding. "Anyways, I would like to officially welcome you all to Camp Despair- the place that will be your home for the rest of your life- where all your wildest nightmares will come true! Oops, did I get the saying wrong?"

"Is this some sort of joke?" I demanded. "Stop toying with us and get to the point."

"No joke here, Missie!" Monokami assured me. "You are all really in Camp Despair! We may have lied just a little teensy bit to you guys at first…" he said sheepishly, twiddling his paws. "But as I was saying earlier, I'm sure you're all excited for the killing game! I know I am! Some of you—" he shot Hiroshi, Kohaku, Tatsuo and I a pointed look— "have clearly been looking for a way to leave this place. And I'll gladly provide you with one! It's pretty simple, actually. Murder one of your fellow campers and get away with it, and you'll get to go home, scot-free!"

"W-What?" Miku stammered. "What are you talking about? Monokami, that isn't a very funny joke…"

"Yeah, that was even worse than one of Aratani's bad pins," Scarlett agreed. Everyone laughed.

Except for me. And Aratani, of course.

No, I wasn't laughing at all. Because I had realized something these idiots hadn't.

Monokami wasn't lying.

All the hints he had been dropping… everything had led to this.

"Monomausu!" Monokami yelled, seeming to pop up from the ground beside Monomausu before whacking him over the head. "Stop giving away all our secrets to the campers!" He chided. "They're not stupid enough to try and open a shed with such dangerous things in it."

That wasn't even the only thing during that conversation.

"S-See?" Monomausu said. "U-Um… I don't have to say anything bad so I won't get in trouble! 'C-Cause you can't o-open the shed! And it's against the rules, anyways!"

"What rules?" Hiroshi asked. "That wasn't one of the rules."

Monokami whacked Monomausu over the head again. "Wrong set of rules, you stupid mouse! This is why I didn't want you here! Don't you remember? Those rules come after the announcement."

No,

"Everyone, get to the net," I ordered, clapping my hands together. "I'm not staying here for longer than I have to. If we don't start moving quick, I'm going to kill someone. Potentially myself."

Monokami giggled. "If only you-"

"MONOKAMI!" Monomausu yelled with surprising force. Everyone blinked in shock, seeming taken aback.

"Oops!" Monokami cackled, covering his grin with his paws. "Forget I said anything, campers! Continue on with your game!"

Monokami wasn't joking at all. This was real and he was dead serious— no pun intended.

"He isn't kidding," I said suddenly, standing up.

"Wh-What?" Miku looked back at me with wide eyes. The whole room turned to me.

"I said he wasn't kidding," I said. "It's not a sick joke. He actually wants us to fucking murder each other."

"Upupupu, that's right!" Monokami giggled. "It's pretty simple, actually. There are so many ways to kill another camper, I don't even mind what you do! Stabbing, bludgeoning, strangulation, poisoning, et cetera!"

And then there was chaos.

Everyone was talking and yelling all at once. Questions, protests and everything in between.

"Settle down!" Monokami yelled, looking pleased when everyone fell quiet. "Sheesh, it's like I just told you to kill one another!"

"Oh wait, I did!"

"Why do you want us to kill each other?" Zara demanded, asking the question we all wanted to know the answer to.

"Because it's fun seeing you all spiral into despair, puhuhuhu!" Monokami replied. "Well, that's not the full reason. But I'm not gonna tell you the rest! That's for you smart kiddos to figure out!"

"N-None of us are actually going to kill each other!" Miyo spoke up. "We'd never do that! We're all friends and nice people!"

"Speak for yourself," I heard Sayin mutter.

"No, I don't expect you to right now," Monokami said with a nod. "That's why I'm giving you all a super fun motive! Hit it, Monomausu!"

"Oh, that's right! He wimped out!" Monokami cackled. "I'll just do it myself, then."

He waddled over to a device at the back of the stage and started fiddling with it. In a few seconds, a loud, obnoxious song filled the room.

"Don't you just love this song?" Monokami asked, tapping his paws to the awkward beat. "I know I do! Anyways, it's time to wrap things up here. Blah blah blah, check the new rules, blah blah blah, have fun, blah blah blah. Monokami out!"

With that, he disappeared, leaving us all in stunned silence.

"W-We a-aren't gonna no-kill each o-other do-over a s-song, r-r-r-right?" Lado asked shakily.

"Right!" Tatsuo said confidently. "We'd never do that just 'cause some annoying song is playing!"

But next to me, Hiroshi was twitching.

"What?" I asked with a frown, sitting back down.

"It's nothing," Hiroshi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's just… musicians pick up on minor mistakes in songs a lot more than the average person. And they really bother me. I believe it's affecting Seiko in a similar way."

I glanced over at the black-haired boy, who did seem to have a deep frown on his face.

"I sure hope nobody's stupid enough to kill another person," I said, leaning back in my chair. "Knowing how much I've been an asshole to everyone, I'll be the first to go. At least that means I don't have to stop being an asshole."

"I have faith in them," Hiroshi said.

"I don't," Ayami deadpanned. "We may be a bunch of kids, but humans will do anything to live— maybe someone will kill another person before they can get killed themselves. Human beings are very selfish. I wouldn't even put killing someone else past myself."

"Wow, you are really blunt," I chuckled. "At least someone here is."

Somehow the music got even worse and I looked up to see Aratani fiddling with the music device with Seiko at her side. He flinched as it became more and more obnoxious and off-beat the more she tried to turn it off. Eventually, he just snatched her hand and pulled her away.

"W-We…" Raiu started to say, before clearing his throat and trying again. "We should look at the new rules. It is crucial that we understand every factor of our situation."

"Yeah," I agreed, pulling out my Monophone. "You know, I'm genuinely curious about the updates."

We all read the rules in silence, an there were two in particular that caught my eye.

Rule One: Violence against the camp directors is strictly prohibited, as is the destruction of surveillance cameras

Rule Two: "Nighttime" is from 10PM to 7AM. Some areas are off limits at this time, so please exercise caution.

Rule Three: Campers may only reside within the camp grounds. Attempting to leave is an unacceptable use of time.

Rule Four: Sleeping anywhere other than the cabins and sleeping in the opposite gender's cabin is strictly prohibited.

Rule Five: Violence against other campers is prohibited unless you have the intent of murder.

Rule Six: Anyone who kills another camper will become the "blackened" and finish camp unless they are discovered.

Rule Seven: Once a murder takes place, a Camp Trial will begin shortly after. Participation is mandatory for all surviving campers.

Rule Eight: Arts and Crafts with Monomausu starts every morning in the lodge. Although it is not mandatory to go, it is advised.

Rule Nine: Rules may be added and removed if needed.

"What the hell?" I asked no-one in particular. "Blackened? Camp Trial? If that means what I think it means… don't tell me they expect a bunch of teenagers to solve a fucking murder case."

"Well, nobody here is a criminal mastermind," Ayami pointed out. "And I assume nobody here has taken another life before. If anything, we'll be solving a murder committed by someone with a similar IQ to ours, which means it won't be nearly as difficult as a proper murder case committed by a real criminal."

"Right," I said. "I'm not naïve, but… it's pretty difficult picturing anyone here committing a murder. Well, except for Sayin, maybe."

"Hey, I heard that!" Sayin called. "You're next, Leona!"

"Edgy bastard," I scoffed. "That kid really needs to get a life."

"He does not have much of a personality," Ayami agreed.

Everyone started getting up to leave. Some were dazed, some were crying.

"Wait, wait, wait, don't leave!" Came a voice. "I forgot to tell you something really important!"

Everyone turned back to see Monokami standing on the stage again.

"What?" Tatsuo asked. "Get on with it. We don't want to see your stupid face for any longer than we have to."

"Sheesh, so rude!" Monokami said angrily. "And here I was, thinking I was giving you a gift!"

"A gift?" Zara asked warily. She held a crying Miyo in her arms.

"Yes, a gift!" Monokami said. "The storage shed is now open! It's full of all the things you might need to commit a murder! Aren't I just the greatest?"

"He's really serious about this, huh?" Kaoru whispered.

"This is… quite unfortunate," Hoshi said, before raising his voice. "We should block off the storage shed so nobody can access any weapons inside."

"That's actually a decent idea," I agreed.

"H-Hey, that's no fair!" Monokami protested angrily. "I went out of my way to set it all up for you, just for you to block it off?! No, this can't be! I won't let you do it!"

"What are you going to do about it?" Aratani scoffed. "You're not a real wolf, it's not like you can stop us."

"Grrr, you're all horrible campers!" Monokami said, stamping his foot. "You leave me no choice! I'll have to add an official rule against this!" He fiddled around with a Monophone-looking device for a few seconds. "There!" He said, looking smug. "Now you can't block it off! I won't let all my hard work go to waste!"

With that, he disappeared again.

I glanced down at my Monophone, and, sure enough, a new rule had been added bumping the previous rule nine to rule ten.

Rule Nine: You may not cause any room or building to be inaccessable.

"Oh dear…" Hoshi said. "Perhaps I shouldn't have spoken up."

"I think it was a good idea," Kaoru said. "Even if nobody is gonna kill each other! That shed is still dangerous…"

"But we cannot go through with it," Kohaku said. "We do not want to risk facing Monokami's wrath. We do not know the severity of the punishment for breaking one of these rules."

"He's right," Ayami spoke up. "He could just kill us for breaking a rule. If we're supposed to kill each other, why wouldn't he be able to kill us?"

"I… I'm going to take a rest to clear my head," Raiu said to us. "Apologies, but I can't quite process what's happening."

Hiroshi nodded. "Take as long as you need. If Monokami was serious, we're in a pretty severe situation. I'm sure there are some people who want to escape and get back to their families no matter what, even if it means doing something unforgivable."

Raiu let out a shaky breath, standing up and leaving the lodge. Everyone else did the same until it was just Ayami, Hiroshi, Scarlett and I left.

"Even Raiu?" Scarlett sighed. "How immature everyone is. And Leona- even I didn't think you would stir up that much trouble."

I just squinted at her, bemused. "What the fuck are you talking about, Redhead?"

"You know, when you told everyone Monokami really wanted us to kill each other. I can see why you were cast as an actor!"

"What? Actor? What are you on about?" I frowned deeply. "I wasn't joking. I was thinking of some things Monokami said beforehand and he definitely wasn't lying."

"Wait," Scarlett said. "You believe him? Like, unironically? What the fuck are you on?" She laughed.

"You won't be laughing when you see a dead body," Ayami deadpanned.

"Maybe it'll be you if we're all lucky," I commented.

Scarlett glared at me. "I'm going elsewhere to talk to more intellectual people," she said haughtily. "Excuse me." With that, she stood up and left the lodge.

Shrugging, I stood up as well. "Let's go," I said. "We have no reason to stay here."

"Right," Hiroshi agreed, and he and Ayami stood up next to me. We all walked out of the lodge and I frowned, contemplating our situation.

Would anyone here really murder? I wondered. I can't rule out the possibility, of course, but it's hard to imagine. I believe we're all sixteen to nineteen years old, and nobody seems to particularly despise anyone else. It'll be easier to kill since we barely know each other, however. That must be why we were given such a short time to adjust to life here.

"This is… troubling, to say the least," Hiroshi said once we had left the building. "I sincerely hope nobody actually takes Monokami's offer. Death is not something to be taken lightly or considered a game."

"Yes," Ayami agreed, despite how nonchalant she had been about the whole thing. "I find it unfortunate that murder is something Monokami can talk so casually about. Furthermore, we all have a one in sixteen chance of dying in the case that someone decides to do the deed."

"I wouldn't blame them," Hiroshi said with a grimace, covering his ears. "This music makes me want to bash my own head in."

"I'm going to the storage shed," I said suddenly. "I'm going to grab a weapon or two, because I, for one, am determined to do whatever I can not to let one of these idiots kill me."
