Tick... Tick... Tick... A beat of an eternal timepiece.

Loop... Loop... Loop... The inevitable end of every timeline.

Ash like snow covered the ground as far as one could see. The skeletons of megalithic structures that thriving societies build lay scattered in shattered wrecks. The girl could taste the ash in her mouth while she trudged through the silent hellscape. Nothing could be heard other then the occasional crackling of falling debris that was slowly settling down. She closed her eyes and tilted her head upwards to the sky. The cool breeze caressed her face and she could feel gritty ash gently brushing against her. Opening her eyes and not focus on anything specific, she gazed off into the distance, at a skyline that looked like a cruel mockery of snow filled fantastical stories. There was not anything left this time. Not even a body to bury. With a sigh and clenched fists, time warped.

Loop... Loop... Loop... One hundred times.

It never got easier carrying the bodies, laying them to rest. Silent, red, beady eyes stared unfeelingly at a grime covered girl sitting next to a freshly filled pit. She could not taste the blood in her mouth or feel the grime on her skin as she was completely taken over by her emotions in that moment: Love, apathy, sadness, hate, hope, despair. And then time warped.

Loop... Loop... Loop... eight hundred times.

The stars looked bright at night without the light from a city to compete with. She could hear the murmur of the survivors as they discussed what to do next. Some might question why a girl was sitting all alone, but there was not anyone for her there. Time warped.

Loop... Loop... Loop... sixteen thousand four hundred and eight.

The smile on her face would have been so very cute with her pink hair if she did not feel so cold. Warped.

Loop... Loop... Loop... one hundred and thirty four thousand nine hundred and...

Loop... Loop... Loop... three hundred and ninety seven million eight...

Loop... Loop... Loop... seventy three bil... ? ? ? ? ? ?

Tick... Tick... Tick... A bell rings in the distance.

...Unknown and... How can existing out of time be anything other then timelessness? ...and uncountable...

Homura can feel the fading after effects of being shunted through time as her brain came onli- as she awakens and the ever familiar white ceiling focuses into a sharp, crisp view. Her body feels momentarily uncomfortable as her mind rapidly settles into place and her body is instinctively healed of any and all ailments making it better then new. A moment more and her body is quickly enhanced to a level beyond even the strongest body builders; Her brain, rapidly rewired to function at an ever increasingly more effective level... For a few moments longer, she does not do anything and lays completely still, her mind an empty void.

More out of habit then anything else, Homura tilts her head to the side and glances toward the wall where she had pinned a calendar up a time long ago; and it reads..

-March 16

..as she already knew. Sometimes she hated that, being so aware of the reality around her. It was her power after all. She could probably go back further; She has gone back further, but there was no point. Easier to get out of the hospital and enter into Madoka's life and all that. The important things. This time would be different though..

With a tired sigh, Homura sat up in her bed. She had things to take care of if she wanted to be ready. Deciding to forgo all the pleasantries of dealing with hospital staff and paperwork, Homura pulled herself out of bed and padded over to one of the open floor-to-ceiling sized windows. Its about time I got started, Homura thought with resolve and without looking back, popped the window's screen open and stepped out into the open air.

Sayaka could not concentrate! She groaned and slid into a slouch in her seat as Saotome did something on the digital white board, droning on about stuff that Sayaka was sure she really should be paying attention to! She was going to fail her next test for sure! Though in all honesty, she could hardly bring herself to care at the moment. Sayaka glanced over at Madoka who was in the same position since class started several hours ago. Her head propped up, resting nestled in her palms; Her eyes staring off into space. The only movement that Sayaka could see from her friend was the frequent glances she would make towards one of the seats that had been empty since the start of the semester. Sometimes she even seemed to stare at the spot as if it contained all the answers in the world. Sayaka scrutinized the empty space as hard as she could to see if she could discover what mysteries it contained, but try as she might, she learning nothing. It was just a simple unlit display on the floor! It was, unsurprisingly, an unused seat after all! Hmm.. Maybe it is something else, thought Sayaka, after all even though she will not admit it, she knows that she can be pretty stupid at times as much at it irks her. She was working on it!

"Miki-san! Can you please read out loud the text displayed on the board to the class?," called Saotome, eliciting a startled jolt out of Sayaka.

"Uuuhhh.." Sayaka finally recognized what looked like english words written out in Saotome's hand writing. Right, this was english class. Madoka would not be much help here either. Not good.

"No sorry," Sayaka internally cringed at Saotome disproving frown.

"Please make sure to study your homework Miki-san," chastised Saotome. Sayaka sighed in relief as Saotome turned her focus onto some other unfortunate student. That relief was short lived though as she noticed that the entire exchange had been met with an unaware Madoka. Usually Madoka would speak up even if she did not know the answer and try and work it out with her, she was tenacious like that. Sayaka was really worried.

-:-

Hitomi hummed in pleasure when the cool spring breeze rustled her hair while she savored her perfectly crafted bento. She enjoyed eating on the school's roof, especially so when it was only just the three of them, which just so happened to be the case due due to the cool spring air. It seemed Sayaka was of like mind at the moment but for entirely different reasons. As soon as class had break for lunch, a worried looking Sayaka was quick to bodily drag Madoka off towards the roof instead of the their customary table in the cafeteria. Something was up.

"Alright Madoka, talk! Was it a boy? I will beat them up if they break your heart!," loudly claimed Sayaka as she stared firmly into Madoka's eyes. Madoka was taken aback by her friends sudden declaration.

"Waah? No, no.. There is no boy," giggled Madoka at Sayaka's brash behavior. Madoka took a bite of her father's lovingly prepared and always delicious lunch.

"Then what? A love letter? Something happened at home? With school maybe?"

"Where is this coming from Sayaka? Everything is fine," questioned a confused Madoka.

"What? You have been staring off into space since class started this morning! And yesterday too!," now that Sayaka though about it, Madoka had been acting off since yesterday. She had not noticed it then because she was stressing over some difficult homework. "You have been acting all weird yesterday. I just would like to know if everything is okay."

Hitomi hummed in thought between bites of her own lunch. She took a sip of her water before interjecting into the conversation, "You have been oddly spacing out since yesterday, Madoka." Sayaka nodded in agreement with a determined expression.

"Have I?," said Madoka, "Ah well I guess something has been different. Just don't laugh alright?"

"Never," affirmed Sayaka. Hitomi bobbed her head in agreement, "We are your friends, Madoka."

It is not like Madoka had not wanted to tell her friends about what has been on her mind, she had just been so so distracted. "Well, you know how I mentioned I had an odd dream yesterday?" trailed off Madoka as she took a bite of her food and made some cute squeaky noises as she ate.

Sayaka nodded not understand how that would be important, "yes?"

Madoka took a gulp from her water cup then continued, "It was.. an interesting dream. There was this really pretty girl in it. I.. feel like I know her." Madoka held up a hand to her chest as she stared off into the city skyline.

"Is that all?," Sayaka chuckled at her friend, "You had me really worried there."

"Saayakaaa," pouted Madoka.

"What happened in your dream?" asked a curious Hitomi.

Madoka's face scrunched up in thought, "I don't really remember much of it. The girl is the only thing I remember clear enough, but even that is kind of fuzzy."
"Maybe she is your girlfriend," teased Sayaka.

"Or star-crossed lovers," added Hitomi absently before gasping at what she said. "I- I m- mean.."

Sayaka laughed in response and patted Hitomi's leg, "Its okay, I understand, Hitomi! There is no need to tell me! Though, Madoka is my wife so dream girl will have to find someone else."

"Come on you two! Stop teasing!," exclaimed Madoka in embarrassed. Madoka happily smiled as she watched her friend's playful giggling. Their laughter drifted off into the wind as Sayaka settled down a bit, who had just realized she should be eating her lunch that she had hardly touched.

"I wish I could remember more of my dream."

Madoka savored the last of her food that she popped into her mouth. Sayaka opened her mouth to respond but was abruptly interrupted by the ring of the school's bell. Madoka giggled as Sayaka flopped backwards with a groan and then suddenly yelped as she almost fell off the bench they were sitting on.

"My foood!"

"Sayaka!"

"Next time, Sayaka," giggled Hitomi as she packed up her bento box to be cleaned later.

Sayaka sighed, Time again for school.

-:-

Once classes had began again, Madoka's behavior had return to normalcy, something that Sayaka was glad about. She had even gotten a laugh at Madoka being a little.. over zealous in her job as a nurse assistant during their physical class. Sayaka could only shake her head at the though of that one poor classmate that had scraped his knee and was most likely to be going home bubbled wrapped thanks to Madoka's mother-henning. Nothing of real note happened much after that, though... there was that one math problem the teacher went over that she could not make sense of. Sayaka tried her best to look like she was doing something, but was really just slacking off, well until Saotome looked at her with a scrutinizing look. Ah the wonders of math..

"Oooh I am so glad school is over!" exclaimed Sayaka in delight as she flung herself onto Madoka's back causing Madoka to stumble going down the front steps of the school and almost bumped into another group of students chatting excitedly about something Sayaka could not care to bother about.

"Saayaaka!," yelped Madoka as she attempted to wiggle out of Sayaka's arm encircling her. Sayaka let go of Madoka a short moment later with a grin. Madoka laughed in embarrassment with an easy smile.

Sayaka then took on an apologetic, "I won't be able to hang out with you today, sorry."

"Ah, you don't want to study with me? Ooh.." Madoka's eyes lit up in understanding, "Its fine, its fine."

Sayaka nodded, "Ya, I will be going to the hospital. You will be okay going home by yourself?"

"Don't worry, I will be fine. Have fun with Kamijou!" Madoka smiled brightly with a wink.

Sayaka's face flushed in embarrassment.

"See you tomorrow!," called Sayaka as she made a hasty exit to hide her burning face.

"See you!," yelled back Madoka while waving good bye then turned around to begin her own walk home.

Madoka did not mind walking home alone, as it was. It is a nice day after all! Everything was okay! Madoka felt content as the gentle murmur of her fellow students talking to their friends washed over her. Weaving around the clustered groups of students, Madoka smiled while listening to all the happy shouts and playful behavior happening all around her. It was a great day.

Madoka hummed happily to the gentle breeze ruffling her hair as the school disappeared behind her. It was not a long walk to her home from the school. If she pushed herself she could get home in as little as ten minutes, but Madoka preferred to take her time and enjoyed the sights. Madoka smiled as she passed by a park with a group of ten or so kids much younger then her playing around in a sand pit. Madoka smiled as it reminded her of her younger brother, Tatsuya. She could see their parents clustered around a few benches seemingly having a pleasant conversation. What a calming afternoon. A good twenty minutes later Madoka turned onto her home street. Madoka reminded herself to get some food for her pet stray cat Amy when she spotted one of the neighbor's cats sunning themselves on their front porch. Turning around another bend in the road, Madoka quickly came to an abrupt halt as she just about crashed into someone with a squeak, her eyes screwing shut on reflex.

"Kaname Madoka."

"Whaa.. huh?," Madoka eyes opened and landed on a pretty girl standing stock still facing in her direction.

"Come with me to America," the pretty girl said in a flat sounding tone.

"Wait what?," a completely confused Madoka resounded in a rush of air. Madoka was overcome with shock as she recognized pretty girl standing in front of her being the exact same as the one in her dream. Woah, no way, Madoka stared at the girl in recognition, her dream doing the girl no justice at all. The girl was wearing something similar to a school uniform, but looked much nicer with pleasing white, gray and purple colors. Exactly like in her dream.

"Madoka," pretty girl's head canted slightly to the side, causing her long black hair to cascade to the side.

"I- I uuuhmm.. what?," Madoka repeated in a stammer.

"Madoka, come with me to America," pretty girl stated again in that same inflection-less tone.

To say that Madoka was confused would be a complete understatement. She was so confused in fact that it would not be so different if someone had just randomly proposed to her and proclaimed their undying love.

"I don't understand, miss..?," Madoka trailed off realizing this mystery person knew her name but she did not know hers. She did not even know anything about this person at all, it made her feel a bit intimidated. And yet...

Seemingly having recognized the unusual situation she had created, pretty girl bowed her head slightly at Madoka in apology.

"Homura Akemi, but you can just call me Homura."

So familiar! What was going on?

Before Madoka could reply, she suddenly noticed the travel bag Homura was holding at her side just as it was extended out to her. Madoka shakily took it from Homura's extended hands. It was a pink travel bag embossed with pretty patterns of flowers and looked strikingly similar to the same bag she had remembered liking after seeing it sitting on a store's shelf some time ago.

"This is for you as well," Homura stated with an outstretched hand holding a vanilla envelope.. that was not there before?

Madoka took the letter wordlessly.

"I will meet with you later to discuss this with your parents," said the pretty girl with a swipe of her hand through her shiny black hair.

Madoka really had no idea what to say to this.

"I.. uhhh...," Madoka trailing off for the second time that day and blinked..

..and blinked again.

The girl, Homura, had seemingly vanished in front of her eyes as if having been suddenly deleted from reality. Madoka has never felt this way before; to be confused so thoroughly. She stood there for several long moments staring into the empty spot in front of her just trying to make sense of it all. Madoka glanced down at the travel bag in her hand and gave it a couple experimental tugs up and down. It seemed real enough, as far as Madoka could tell. First the dreams and now this? Shaking her head, Madoka deciding to not think about it too much and figured she should get herself home. It must have been something she ate.. no. Quickly, Madoka reprimanded herself for even considering her father's cooking having such an effect. What a weird week she was having. Maybe Sayaka was playing some prank on her? Madoka was not sure how that made any sense. This was just way to much for her.

It did not take long for Madoka to get home with an extra bag in tow. With a shout of "I'm home!" and a "Welcome back!" in response from her father from another room Madoka was quick to enter her room to avoid having to interact with anyone. She did not want to be answering questions about the mysterious bag she was holding. Madoka preferred to first check things over for herself before doing anything. Thankfully, none what had happened seemed dangerous, just confusing. Also, the only proof that she had that this Akemi Homura girl existed at all was a bag and a letter.

After spending a few moments overcoming the initial shock, she felt herself feeling very troubled about what she had experienced. Feeling curious, Madoka opened up the travel bag and looked through what it contained, which quickly left her disappointed soon after. She supposes she should not feel surprised when all she found was clothing and basic amenities. On a second look though, something that struck her as odd was how all the items were things she distinctly remembers liking. There was even a brand new version of her favorite shirt sitting in the pile of emptied out items. It was actually kind of creepy just how well this "Homura" knew her. While clutching a small box of candies she likes with having been pulled from the pile, Madoka felt apprehensive about the "meeting" that was supposed to be happening later. She was not sure if she wanted it to happen or not.

-:-

Homura was glad that everything was going smoothly so far. Not that she is a stranger to things working out for once, even if it almost never does. Still, Homura feels she has sort of gotten used to it all; the loops, the death.. fighting.. No, that was not accurate. She has gotten acclimated to all the trouble, but not used to it. Homura relaxed against the concrete barrier up top one of Mitakihara's towering buildings with her feet dangled off the edge. Homura did not usually indulge in such things, but on whim in that moment, she felt like she could. Enjoying the scenery and the wind blowing through her hair, Homura could understand why Kyouko could always be found atop the tallest buildings in any given area.

Homura felt uneasy not having anything to do. Always on the move from one plan to the next. There was never time for a break. Homura could never allow such a thing; Madoka was way more important. Homura sometimes wonders what life would be like if she was not a Puella Magi. Life was quite different before the constant fighting. Though its not like her life before being a Puella Magi was that much better, if anything, becoming a Puella Magi was a marked improvement if it did not have such a high cost. Homura mentally shook her head. She was thinking too much about things that did not matter. For once in a long time, Homura felt herself feeling somewhat relaxed. Of course, she still had to complete her objective, but.. Maybe Madoka was right.

Curious.

Homura's head snapped around to focus on a white fluffy creature sitting not five meters to her left. Homura cursed herself for her lack of attentiveness, she was not Mami after all.

Incubator, Homura replied.

You are an aberration, you should not exist. The creature's tail flicked back and forth in a pattern Homura could not decipher.

This is most curious, I have no recollection of contracting with you, but you must have if you are a magical girl. Homura had no patience to deal with the rat right now.

Leave now!, commanded Homura, or there will be.. collateral damage.

You seem to know much about me, but I know nothing about you. I will not inform Mami of your presence in her territory.

Homura refused to reply to the bait and instead rested her head on a raised knee. The Incubator was vexing to deal with, especially with its crafty word play. If there was one thing she could appreciate about the Incubator though was that it normally spent about a weeks time surveilling something new before taking any action. Not this time it seemed. Homura could never truly predict what actions the incubator would take in any given loop. Thankfully, there was no Madoka involvement at least.

The swishing of the Incubator's tail continued unabated.

"Leave already," Homura wondered if the Incubator was flicking the rocks scattered across the roof with its tail on purpose.

Very well.

Homura glanced back just to make sure and watched as the Incubator scurried across the roof and disappeared over the edge. The Incubator was not getting any information out of her today. Homura was confident Mami had not detected her yet thanks to her having learned long ago to hide her presence even while transformed. Homura tilted her head to the sky to enjoy the warm heat from the sun on her face. She had more business to take care of, but for the moment, she would just relax and enjoy the scenery. Madoka's orders.

-:-

Madoka was nervous. The longer time dragged on, the more tense she became. Her father had even picked up on it and asked if she was alright. Madoka replied that she was fine, she was just dealing with stuff at school. Of course her father seemed to suspect there was more going on but he seemed willing to drop it for now, much to Madoka's relief. She ate through her dinner faster then she would normally just so she could get back to her room. Who knows when Homura would show up? Madoka wanted to be the one to answer the door first when she did, if she really would show up that is. Madoka picked up her cup to refill it, but was mildly surprised when she almost spilled out the juice in it. Huh, she remembers having drank it empty. She must be more nervous then she though if she was missing things like this.

"You seem to be in a rush. Make sure to finish your homework before going to bed, Madoka," said Tomohisa while somewhat unsuccessfully trying to keep Tatsuya from making a mess of his food.

"Yes Papa," replied Madoka who made quick work of cleaning her dishes and placing them on the drying rack before rushing off back to her room.

"Don't forget," came the call from the other room and over the babbling of her younger brother.

"I won't!," Madoka yelled back as she rushed up the stairs. Once she entered her room she noticed the lights were off and flicked them back on; remembering not having turned them off. Madoka was suddenly startled at the sight of someone laying in her bed and let out a cute, squeaky scream.

There laying face up and spread out on her bed was the black haired girl from before wearing the same clothing she had seen Kamijou wearing when she had gone with Sayaka to the hospital one time. Homura's head turned in Madoka's direction at the sound of her startled squeak.

"Madoka, are you okay?," called out the concerned voice of her father from downstairs.

"Y- Ya! I am okay! I was just startled! Don't worry," yelled back Madoka as she leaned against the door jamb to rest her racing heart. Homura's lips twitched. The two just stared at each other for a few moments until Madoka had enough and tensely stepped into the room, leaving the door cracked open.

"H- How did you get in here?," weakly asked Madoka who hunched into herself. The poor pink haired girl was very very lost. Homura did not saying anything in reply and just continued to stare at her as if something had affronted her, which only made Madoka more afraid. In one smooth motion, Homura slid off the bed and strode across the room to gently tug the yellow ribbons out of Madoka's hair. Being too scared to do anything, Madoka clenched her eyes shut and held her arms close to her chest, allowing Homura to do as she pleased.

"Never change, Madoka. Cherish your family," gently spoke Homura in a caring tone that Madoka was not sure what to make of. Madoka peeked her eyes open, which then suddenly widened as she watched Homura holding the red ribbons she had gotten some time ago but felt too self-unconscious to wear. With great care, Homura reached up and pulled Madoka's hair into her customary pigtails then expertly tied them off with the red ribbons. Homura looked soft as she held a tiny, almost unnoticeable smile on her face.

"You do not have anything to fear from me, Madoka. I only wish the best for you."

Madoka suddenly clutched her head as she felt a sudden wave of vertigo. The words "Homura-chan" rolled of her tongue as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Whatever was going on, Madoka suddenly felt absolutely certain that Homura would not harm a single hair on her head. That, this mysterious black haired girl, would ensure no harm would ever come to her. Where this feeling was coming from, Madoka was not sure and it made her feel uneasy, but at the same time she felt an overwhelming sense of.. correctness. Like a long forgotten memory of a moment she enjoyed that just as suddenly slipped away... Madoka mentally shook her head.

"Please tell me what is going on," Madoka asked as she gazed into Homura's eyes.

Homura looked uncharacteristically nervous all of a sudden.

"Lets.. Lets sit down first," softly said Homura as she pulled Madoka's desk chair next to the bed and then sat down into it. Madoka followed and sat down on the side of her bed. Homura fidgeted with her shirt for a moment before she spoke.

"I want you to come with me to America," Homura briefly paused then hastily added, "For vacation."

"Why? What about school?"

"No need to worry about any of that. I have taken care of everything. This is for you, I want you to have a vacation," pleaded Homura earnestly, "Will you?"

Madoka's face took on a thoughtful expression, I can't just suddenly take a vacation, can I? I have responsibilities!

On the other hand though, something in Homura's request resonated with her on a fundamental level. Even though Homura framed her request as if it was for her, a part of Madoka felt that this all really was actually for Homura. And Homura needed her help?

For some reason, Homura was special to Madoka and she wanted to understand why.

But could she do this? Yes, Madoka could do this.

"I don't know why, but I trust you even though I barely know you.."

Homura could barely contain a flinch at that.

"..I will do it, I will come with you to America," agreed Madoka.

Homura relaxed at the declaration and opened her mouth to speak before being abruptly cut off by Madoka.

"Why America though?"

"Ah, well, its far away," haltingly spoke Homura.

Madoka giggled, "Is that why?" America was far away and almost dauntingly large. Her mother also had business there. And.. everyone spoke english.

Ah.. Madoka is not sure she wants to go anymore.

"I am not very good at english."

"Do not worry, I will help you with that. My english is good. I am just glad you are willing to do this," Homura shifted in her seat looking around the room, "Do you have the letter I handed you? We need to discuss this with your parents before we go."

"Ya its.. under all the clothing," said Madoka as she pointed at the emptied out travel bag across the room. Homura just shook her head at the mess and all the care she took to pack the bag.

"So how will this work," asked Madoka. She had no idea how Homura would pull this off, but she seemed to know what she was doing.

"I have forged several documents pertaining to a fictitious school trip to America for 'English and Culture studies'. Your parents will need to sign them and then be sent to Saotome-sensei. Of course, these documents will be 'lost' before they would ever reach her. The flight has been scheduled for this Saturday. All legal documents that you will require have been prepared. As I said, everything has been taken care of, we just need to make sure your parents won't be worried. Also..," Homura continue to rattle off more information like a drill sergeant lecturing new recruits. Madoka just nodded along.

Madoka realized she would have to lie to her parents in order for this to work. Could she also be willing to do that? Madoka was not ready to do something like that or discuss this with her parents just yet, but Homura's confidence was definitely affecting her.

"So we just need to make sure my parents will not be worried," said Madoka, repeating what she understood once Homura finished her explanation.

"And make sure none of your friends or your teacher will be worried either," added Homura.

"Right.."

Madoka closely studied Homura. She felt a sense of familiarity from her; it was almost as if Madoka had met her before. Then there was her presence, there was something intangible about it she could not place. It was as if there was more then she could perceive. And then there were her feelings...

Again, could she do this? The answer was yes, Madoka would do this; which is weird because Madoka is not sure why she even would.

"I can help with that," Madoka grinned as her voice took on a determined tone, "I will just tell them I am going on a family trip, my mother sometimes does that for work."

"Good," agreed Homura as she stood, "Let us go talk with your parents then."

Homura stepped across the room and dug up the letter out from under the mess Madoka made. No, Madoka was definitely not ready for this.

"Aah wait! What about your parents?," asked Madoka, "And your cloths. That's the kind that hospitals have their patients wear. Are you okay?"

"I have no parents and I am fine, I just did not feel like changing," Homura shrugged passing the letter to Madoka.

"What?," gasped Madoka, "No parents?"

Homura did not seem to treat it as anything special and casually stated, "I am an orphan."

If Madoka was on the fence before about helping out Homura she was not now. She would make sure this girl will be taken care of. To callously state such a thing..

"Right..," fidgeted Madoka.

"Shall we?," asked Homura as she waved a hand at the door.

There is no time like the present, thought Madoka quoting something she heard her mother say once and promptly stood up to follow Homura out. Once down stairs, Madoka took note of just how well Homura navigated around her home. She seemed to move around the place as if she had lived there. It was a little unnerving, but she decided to let it be. Homura did not seem like a bad person, if anything, the longer they talked the more open and relaxed she seem to become. It was almost like watching a flower bloom.. Madoka quietly giggled at the thought.

The two found Madoka's father lounging at the dining table reading a paper backed book. It seemed Madoka's mother was not home yet, though that was nothing unusual.

"Papa, I would like you to meet my friend," Madoka smiled.

Tomohisa glanced at Homura while bookmarking his place and then setting the book down onto the table.

"Akemi Homura," said Homura giving a respectful bow, "I apologize for not announcing myself, I was in a rush to talk with Madoka."

Nodding, Tomohisa smiled kindly at Homura, "Well, I am glad to meet you. Madoka always makes the nicest friends." He winked at Madoka who ducked her head bashfully.

"What brings you here?," asked Tomohisa, "It is a school night."

Madoka perked up and nervously placed the letter she was clutching on the table in front of her father.

"Oh? What is this?," he asked as he shifted his glasses to get a better look.

"Our class will be going on a trip to America. I was just discussing this with Madoka," informed Homura, "I do not think it will be a problem. The school has made sure everything will be taken care of."

Madoka shakily nodded, "Yes."

"I see," Tomohisa glanced over the letter and did not see anything other then Madoka's name printed on it, "This is from Saotome-san?"

"Correct," Homura shifted slightly to the side, "Will Madoka be allowed to go?"

Tomohisa hummed noncommittally as he popped open the letter's seal to give the contents a read. Everything seemed legitimate enough, though usually for something like this the school would inform the parents ahead of time. Perhaps the school was giving the students more responsibility as they grow older. Tomohisa placed down the letter and looked at Madoka in thought. He would need to consider it more before making any decision.

Suddenly, the atmosphere in the room seemed to change as Homura took a slight step forward looking Tomohisa in the eyes and stated, "I think it would be good for Madoka. Her english needs improving."

Madoka shifted in embarrassment. Her poor english performance was no mystery.

"Yes, I think you might be right," Tomohisa considered it slowly, "it would be good for her."

Madoka let out a breath she did not know she was holding. For a moment there she though her father was just going to say class="pageShadowHasTransparentBackground" He seemed to have changed his mind. I wonder what he is thinking. Madoka glanced at Homura in thought, I guess we can do this. Madoka felt a little tingly all over.

"And your english is good, Akemi-san?," Madoka's father asked.

"It is, but I could still use the practice. I have been tutoring Madoka, but she needs more help."

Tomohisa glanced over at Madoka one more time before turning around and grabbing a pen off the table to sign the documents, "Yes, Madoka definitely needs help."

He glanced over his glasses at Madoka, "You better study hard."

"You know I always do, Papa," huffed Madoka.

"I know, I am just teasing you. Make so to pack well and be safe," Tomohisa smiled at Madoka in encouragement, "I know you will do well."

Madoka blushed happily, "Thanks Papa!"

"Do you know when you will be leaving?"

"Ya, on Saturday uuhh..," Madoka frowned uncertainly.

"Saturday at ten in the morning. We will be taking a bus to the airport from the school," supplied Homura.

"Good, make sure to stick together and look out for each other," Tomohisa handed the resealed envelope back to Madoka and then turned to Homura, "You should get home soon, its getting late. I am sure you two can discuss more tomorrow at school."

"I will walk you out," Madoka offered leading Homura to the front door, "Do you live far?"

"No, I live about fifteen minutes south of here."

The two drifted off into a companionable silence as the two walk to the front entrance.

"Oh, will you be coming to school tomorrow? I don't think you are a student."

"I will not be going to school," affirm Homura, "but I can meet with you after school if you wish to discuss things more."

Madoka shook her head, "You should go to school! It is important. Come on! You can hang out with me and my friends. I am sure they will like you!"

Homura never could refuse Madoka.

"I would prefer not to," Homura clenched her fists tensely.

"Hoomuuurrraaa-cchaaannn," Madoka grinned, "If you can prepare a vacation for me, you can come to school as well! No slacking allowed!"

Homura did not have any other planning or preparations to make.

Homura glanced at Madoka, "Alright.. I will come."

"Good! I will see you then!," beamed Madoka.

A small smile appeared on Homura's face; Madoka always made her forget everything bad.

Madoka hugged Homura cheerfully, "See you soon!"

"Good bye."

Homura walked home alone.

-:-

Madoka was excited. It was a new day and she was looking forward to meeting Homura at school. Sure, she was a little weird and mysterious, but she seemed to have this tender caring side to her. And, well, while there was a lot unknown about Homura, Madoka was certain she would learn more about her in due time. Even though yesterday was weird and scary, Madoka was certain that today.. today will be great!

"Madoka, slow down there," Tomohisa chuckled knowingly as Madoka ate her food at a record pace.

"Sorry, Papa."

"There is no need to rush, you know."

Junk smile proudly at Madoka, "You seem more confident today."

Madoka blushed, "I am?"

"Well, you are wearing those red ribbons you always said were to flashy," nodded Junko, "I was waiting for you to ask me about them. I am glad, you should be more confident."

Madoka smiled brightly at her loving, supportive parents. She love them so much. Tatsuya suddenly knocked some of his food off his tray and babbled loudly demanding their attention.

"Yes, you to," called Junko trying to stop Tatsuya from making a mess, "That is the kind of confidence I want to see!" Tatsuya laugh and tried to make an even bigger mess.

"Well, I am going now. See you all later!," informed Madoka over the noise of Junko scolding Tatsuya.

"Have a good day at school, Madoka!," called her father.

Madoka grabbed her bento box and book bag.

"I will!"

"Be safe," called out Junko.

"Yes Mama," and Madoka was out the door.

-:-

Managing to make it to the school grounds faster then she would normally, Madoka was forced to wait sitting on a bench for Sayaka and Hitomi to show up. Thankfully, Madoka did not have to wait long as she spotted Hitomi and Sayaka rounding a row of trees. Madoka stood and quickly dashed towards them while yelling, "Sayaka! Hitomi!"

"Seems someone is exic-," started Sayaka but was cut off with an oomph as Madoka slammed into her and gave her a tight hug.

Sayaka laughed, "My wife misses me!" Madoka was quick to break free from Sayaka to swing around and give Hitomi a hug.

"My wife left me!," cried Sayaka in a theatrical tone.

"I am glad you two are my friends!," exclaimed Madoka as she pulled away from Hitomi, "I have something important to say."

"I am glad as well!," smiled Hitomi at Madoka infectious excitement.

Sayaka huffed, "I hope its not about getting a divorce!"

"Sayaka!," Madoka laughed nervously, "I just want to let you two know that my family will be leaving to America this Saturday. We wont be gone long. My mother just has business to attend to in America is all."

"Wow really? That sounds like fun," said Hitomi, who suddenly shifting from excitement to being upset. "But what about school? I wish I could have a vacation. I have so much work to do," she lamented.

Madoka felt nervous at the sudden shift in conversations as Sayaka started looking upset as well.

"You get to skip school? That's not fair! You are so lucky," groaned Sayaka, "And I thought you liked all the work, Princess Hitomi."

"It is true, I do like all the work and being busy, but I like having a break every once in a while as well," demurely replied Hitomi.

"It's not that big a deal," hastily called out Madoka trying to think of an excuses.

"Not a big a deal? You get to have fun while I am stuck suffering in school!"

"N- No, no. Nothing like that. My- My mother sorted this out already with Saotome-sensei. I- I will have to write a bunch of stuff," Madoka said uneasily, "Please don't be upset. I won't be gone for more then a couple weeks."

"Alright." Sayaka let out a huff of air to help herself calm down. "So you will have school work to do?"

"Yes, I will have to uuuhh.. have to write several papers in english! Ya.."

Sayaka grimaced at that, "That doesn't sound easy."

"It won't be," Madoka said sadly. She felt awful having to lie to her friends and family. It did not fully set in what happened yesterday, but the longer she thought about it, the worse she felt. Still.. if it will help Homura and allow her to better understand the girl, Madoka would do it and that made her happy. It was not like she was lying about anything important though. Maybe miss a little school, but she would have to make it up later, Madoka was sure about that.

"We should be happy for her, Sayaka," Hitomi turned to Madoka, "Have fun and be safe, Madoka. Make sure to bring back many souvenirs for us! I assume we will not be seeing you after school?"

"You won't be seeing me after school," Madoka affirmed, "I will make sure to bring some gifts back."

Sayaka half-heartedly shrugged at that, "Ya, ya. Just come back safe, alright? Aaand we should also hurry to class." Sayaka did not want to know what Saotome would do if she was late to class, considering her poor performance the day before. The other two readily agreed.

-:-

Thankfully, the trio's home room teacher was in a pleasant mood. Saotome was completely enamored with her current boyfriend she had for the past three months. She kept going on and on about how great he was; she seemed to glow.

Madoka giggled at her teacher's love struck behavior.

"Class, we have a new transfer student today. She was recently discharged from the hospital, so please treat her well," announced Saotome, "You may come in Akemi-san."

At Saotome's promoting, in walked a pretty girl with long black hair that immediately captured the entire class's attention. Madoka blushed at hearing some of the comments from her fellow students. She was beautiful. Madoka never realized it before until now, though that is not surprising considering yesterday's events.

As the new transfer student wrote her name on the board, Sayaka was quick to notice that when she walked in, her eye's went straight to Madoka.

"Akemi Homura," Homura dryly stated.

Sayaka was not sure she liked the new girl, she appeared.. mysterious, stuck up perhaps; She did not care for that. Though, what really got to her the most was not the new student, but was how Madoka reacted to her. Madoka seemingly light up in a way she had never seen before and that made her jealous, though Sayaka would never admit that.

Once introductions were through, Homura stepped over to her assigned seat as indicated by Saotome. Homura glanced one more time in Madoka's direction just before sitting down.

Madoka blushed fiercely when her eyes briefly locked with Homura. Burying her face into her arms, Madoka could not stop giggling. What was with her today?

Throughout the day, class was.. interesting. The transfer student, who had supposedly been recently discharged from the hospital, blew the class away. No math, grammer, writing, english, or history question was to hard for her to answer. Everything thrown at her by Saotome was easily within Homura's ability to answer. Homura was so knowledgeable that she had even been able to answer questions not even Hitomi could answer, and she was known as one of the smartest students in their class; if not thee smartest.

Sayaka was dumbfounded. Once class broke for lunch, she rushed over to Madoka's desk to talk with her about the new student, but it seemed Madoka had other ideas. As Sayaka was nearing Madoka's desk, Madoka stood up and strode right past her towards Homura's crowded desk with an apologetic wave, leaving Sayaka stunned.

"Alright everyone, leave Akemi-san alone, I have to take her to the nurses office," Madoka sternly announced as she shooed away the other students pestering Homura.

"Thank you, I was feeling a little overwhelmed," said Homura, "You are the nurse assistant, correct?"

"I am," affirmed Madoka then grabbed Homura's hand and led her out of the room with a luminous smile, "You looked like you needed help. Let me show you the way to the nurse's office. Are you feeling okay?"

"Thank you, but I am alright," quietly spoke Homura.

"I just want to make sure...," Madoka was not taking no for an answer this time.

Sayaka trailed after them at a distance, feeling lost.. and upset. What had she just seen?

"By the way, Homura-chan, I am so glad you decided to come to school!," exclaimed Madoka once away from most of the other students.

Homura just silently nodded in reply. A few moments later, Homura then came to a sudden stop in the middle of the skyway connecting the school's auxiliary facilities to the main complex.

"You do love your friends and family?" melancholy spoke Homura in almost a whisper.

"Yes of course. You said the same thing yesterday. Why?," questioned Madoka.

Ignoring Madoka's question, Homura continued, "Good, never stop loving them. I want to make sure."

Suddenly, a shout broke through the air.

"Hey, what's going on?," shouted Sayaka from the end of the bridge.

"Sayaka!," called out Madoka with a happy wave at Sayaka's sudden appearance, "I am happy you are here. I was just planning on introducing my new friend to you and Hitomi once we got back from the nurse's office."

Madoka looked fine as far as Sayaka could tell. Was she overreacting?

"Miki Sayaka," intoned Homura.

Madoka nodded, "We just met the day before. Why don't you come along with us to the nurse's office?"

Sayaka huffed, "Ya, alright."

The trip was short lived. Once at the office, Homura had spent a good ten minutes talking with the nurse about what kind of medicine she needed.

"What is this medicine for?," piped up Sayaka.

Madoka was aghast, "Sayaka, that's personal! Don't ask that!."

Shrugging her shoulder, Homura did not care about Sayaka invasiveness, "Its fine, I was just in the hospital for heart surgery. I have heart arrhythmia."

With a gasp, Madoka suddenly looked concerned, even Sayaka seemed effected by the declaration.

"Woah!," exclaimed Sayaka at the same time Madoka asked, "You will be okay?"

"Yes, I will be fine," affirmed Homura, "It is nothing to be worried about, I had surgery for it already. I am used to it."

Madoka did not like that kind of answer, but she was not going to push the subject.

"We will support you in any way we can. We are your friends now, Homura-chan," firmly declared Madoka, clearly indicating herself, Sayaka, and the not present Hitomi. Sayaka looked like she was going to protest, but was quickly shut up with a light jab from Madoka. "Come eat lunch with us. I am sure Hitomi saved us a seat in the cafeteria."

Homura looked a bit reluctant to agree, but acquiesced with a shallow nod.

-:-

As it turned out, Hitomi did save a seat for them once the three made it back from the nurse's office.

"Akemi-san, was it?," asked Hitomi once they all sat down.

"Correct," said Homura inclining her head, "Shizuki Hitomi."

"You are quite the academic," said Hitomi mildly surprised Homura knew her name, though perhaps Saotome had told Homura about her being class monitor.

"She is!," agreed Madoka, "She offered to help me with my english."

"Oh really? That's nice of you Akemi-san," sometimes Hitomi wished she had the time to help her friends in such a capacity.

The conversation then diverged between different but mostly school related topics. Throughout all this though, Sayaka was silently observing Madoka. At first she thought Homura had done something to Madoka, but so far Homura had been nothing but passive, so she dismissed that theory. The longer she observed, the more she noticed how it was mostly Madoka that was handling the interactions between the two. Sayaka was not sure what to make of it, especially with Madoka suddenly being so enamored with Homura. Well, its not like it would matter tomorrow, thought Sayaka. Sayaka was definitely looking forward to better understanding what Madoka was seeing in Homura tomorrow.

After lunch, the four went back to class. Once physical exercise class came around though, it was definitely odd and partly entertaining watching how Homura, who apparently had a heart condition, was beating everyone's track record. Yes, Sayaka was interested in knowing more about Homura.

After class ended, Sayaka and Hitomi bowed out citing their own obligations they had to attend to. Sayaka was not happy and felt conflicted about that, but after thinking about it for a bit, she was not worried about Homura spending time with Madoka. While, yes, she appeared mysterious, stuck up and all around like a bad person, she mostly just seemed very quiet. Homura was very passive and did not do anything unless it was with the insistence of someone else. Certainly pulling off the stunts she did looked suspicious, but Sayaka sure there was a logical explanation. This, sadly, all kind of reminded her of Kamijou. He tended to spend his time doing nothing but reading or quietly contemplating his life until Sayaka brought some music CDs to listen to. Maybe Homura had a good physical rehabilitation program? Modern medicine was pretty amazing even though it could not do everything.

-:-

"Homura-chan, what would you like to do?" asked Madoka as they leisurely walked down the side walk. Homura shrugged.

"Anything is fine with me."

"Alright," smile Madoka, "Let's go to my favorite cafe. They have some nice drinks there."

"Sure.."

What a mystery, Madoka hoped she could help Homura. Even though she had only known her for a two days now, she could tell something was seriously wrong. She had so many question, but Madoka did not think it would be the right time to ask them of Homura. The two engaged in pleasant conversation until it was time for Madoka to head home.

"I will see you tomorrow, Madoka. We will meet at the park near the school before leaving. Make sure you have everything you need. I arranged for a taxi to pick us up in a nearby parking lot."

Madoka nodded, "Yes I will see you soon as well. You will be okay walking home alone?"

"Yes, I will be fine. Take care, Madoka."

Madoka watched Homura walk off down the street before making her own trek back home. She was definitely worried.

-:-

Mami was not happy to learn there was another Puella Magi in her territory. She only learned of this recently thanks to school yesterday when her soul gem had reacted to the presence of another Puella Magi when she was fiddling with it trying to find witches. It took her a longer then she was happy to notice that the other Puella Magi was apparently attending the same school as she, and a floor below her no less! When Mami had attempted to locate the unknown girl, she had only encounter more difficulty as the other girl had seemingly vanished. No matter what she did, Mami just could not find the unknown girl. Thinking she had just imagined it, Mami had asked Kyubey for assistance and was surprised to learn that Kyubey did know about the other Puella Magi. Mami was a little upset about that, but Kyubey had informed her that he was just observing her as the curious anomaly she was and would have informed her if it was serious.

Now, Mami found herself walking though a park early in the morning thanks to a tip from Kyubey. This was all after having woken up several hours earlier in an attempt to try and locate the unknown girl. Once she was sure the other girl was nearby, Mami transformed as she would not need her soul gem for tracking purposes anymore. Mami found the other girl sitting on a bench wearing a black hoodie and some purple track pants.

"You know, its rude to to enter another Puella Magi's territory without announcing oneself," casually commented Mami.

"Tomoe Mami," said the other girl without even turning her head, "I am busy, go away."

Mami felt a little irritated at that, how rude. "That's not very nice. At least you could have the courtesy of introducing yourself."

"Akemi Homura, happy? Now, please leave," replied Homura with an uninterested tone.

"I am afraid that won't do," Mami shook her head, "You should be more forthcoming or we may have problems. So why are you here?"

The other girl did not react. Just as Mami was about to say something more, the other girl seemed to perk up.

"You do not need to worry about me, I will be leaving this city," Homura stated.

Mami looked up where Homura was facing and suddenly understood. There jogging towards them holding a pink travel bag was a pink haired girl she recalled her soul gem had reacted very strongly to, but was obviously not a Puella Magi.

"No!," fiercely stated Mami, but was ignored.

"Homura-chan!, I hope you were not waiting long," Madoka called out.

"Its fine, I just came early. You ready to leave?," asked Homura standing up.

Mami had enough and shouted, "No! You will not be taking her!"

The black haired girl looked at Mami with a slight look of irritation while the pink one just looked on in confusion. Finally, a reaction!

"I told you, I am leaving the city. I was just passing though," Homura repeated again as if talking to a moron.

"What is going on?" asked Madoka.

Mami looked at Madoka and asked, "Tomoe Mami, and you are?"

"Kaname Madoka," replied Madoka in confusion while taking in Mami's odd outfit that looked more like a uniform that would be at home in some European cafe.

Mami wanted to tell the Madoka girl to not go with the other Puella Magi, but that was obviously not going to work. The two clearly knew each other.

Looking Homura in the eyes, Mami sternly warned, "Don't do this, Akemi-san."

"Le- Leave Homura-chan alone," Madoka nervously replied while stepping closer to Homura.

Completely unaffected, Homura just briefly incline her head in Mami's direction, "Good day, Tomoe-san." The two walk off with Madoka sneaking a few peaks back at Mami.

Defeat, that is what Mami felt as she watched them walk away. This was very different then what she is used to. She knew being a Puella Magi could be cut-throat, but to what.. kidnap a non-contracted? And for what? Mami is not sure what the other girl's intention were, but could not have been good. There was not much she could have done about it though even if she knew. The pink haired girl obviously has not been chosen by Kyubey, nor did she seem aware of what was going on and as such, Mami could not act outright. Mami also considered fighting the other Puella Magi discreetly, but did not think she could do it without putting the pink haired girl at risk. Her only option now was to try a different approach.

Mami then thought out, Hey, Kyubey, you around?

-:-

"So who was that?," asked Madoka while climbing into the Taxi parked waiting for them.

Homura slid in next to Madoka and handed the driver a wad a yen, "Someone I once knew."

"I see."

Madoka then realized something, "Oh, Homura-chan, where is your bag?" Madoka did not remember ever seeing Homura carrying a travel bag.

"I have it right here," Homura automatically replied, but then froze realizing her faux pas.

"Ah, its in the trunk."

Madoka did not remember seeing another bag in the trunk but shrugs, perhaps it was covered up by some stuff.

During the trip to the airport Madoka had dozed off on Homura's shoulder causing a small smile appeared onto Homura's face.

This should be an enjoyable Rest Loop.

- Preface -

Skip this if you wish, everything here and below details my own rambling and is mostly a note to future me, though there is some details on what this story is and supposed to be, if interested. I do not know if putting this here is appropriate or not, but I simply do not care.

First off, this general idea of a fanfic I am trying to write has been percolating around in my head for over 5-7+ years and up to at least 15 years. I really can not give an exact date for how long. Suffice to say, it has been eating at me for a long, long time. It has gone through many, many iterations, but to name a few: There was an Evangelion phase that ended up not going anywhere because I did not quite have the motivation to make it happen, or the emotional attachment. It also did not help that Evangelion is a bit of a rabbit hole, ha ha. Then there was a sort of Evangelion/Ranma fusion thing going on shortly after, but eh, same story. So I tried to do something a bit easier and "I know", I thought, "I will try my hand at Star Wars." I had even less emotional attachment and motivation there. Then PMMM came around and blew me away. I had seen PMMM when it came out, but seeing it again after so many years and being so different.. Well, all I can say is that it has had quite the profound feeling on me, and in particular, Homura Akemi especially.

My general idea for the fanfic I wanted to write though has more or less stayed the same over the years and basically it went a little like this: Humans in space fighting aliens/squids in a desperate bid for survival with lots of magic and science fiction elements. Sounds familiar? It should because that is basically 'To The Stars'.

And that has left me feeling.. upset, distressed, violated and any number of negative things that can be tacked on. Any time I just think of 'To The Stars' my mind ties itself into knots and then goes into cascade-failure mode, and I hate it. I have been wrestling with this for weeks. While for the most part I feel mostly just mixed about the other story, the thing that gets me the most is the world building, because that is basically what I wanted to write. I feel like someone had gone into my own head and stolen everything. Or, it would be like spending your life's work trying to accomplish something great only for someone else to pull the rug out from under you and that sucks. This is something that is very deeply personal to me and I can not help how I feel. I know I am being stupid and unfair as there is "nothing new under the sun", but I can not help it. This is just how I feel. Though, it helps a bit I actually have not read much of 'To The Stars'. Mostly just the first few chapters and then ctrl-f'ed around a bit. Then there was me jotting down the details of what I wanted to write, highlighting the differences. Still, its annoying always finding more and more problems no matter where I look. I almost considered not doing this at all, but you know what, I refuse. I am going to write this regardless of anything else. Middle finger to life and all that. So fasten those seat belts, this is going to be a wild ride.

My original idea for this story was that it was going to take place in three segments, a 'during series segment', a 'post series segment' and then finally, the most important part, the 'future series segment'. For PMMM I had at one point considered tying all that up into a single story, but scrapped that because it would ruin the thematic feel of it and I do not think the time skips would fit well into the middle of the story. So here it is, the start of the first section of the great future of Magical Girl and their exploits!.. and Humanities as well...

So where did this come from?

I have always been interested in science fiction and ideas pertaining to the the arcane; Especially the arcane. PMMM's arcane elements were the best and that is what made me start loving it more then ever. Well that, and Akemi Homura, she is special. I like magic and I like science fiction, what more could I ask for?

As for what inspired me? Stuff I bet none of you have ever heard of, probably.

Battlestar – a BSD game made in 1979 focused on science fiction and magic.

Warzone 2100 - an RTS game made in 1999 in a post-apocalyptic world with advanced technology.

Angband - an amazing dungeon crawler made in 1990 based on J.R. and an older version of a similar game. My favorite version of the game was something around 2.7.8, 1995. Game has many variants.

Captain Harlock

Legends of the Galactic Heroes

Astro Boy

Ghost in the shell

Evangelion

PMMM – Obviously

Flip Flappers

Gundam stuff

Blame!

Transformers – G1 worldbuilding

ToAru Rail/Dex stuff

The Irregular at Magic High School

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet – The first episode in particular.

Knights of Cydonia – Shitty cgi, but its world building was amazing. Season one stuff only.

And many many more..

Now, ignore all the above.

The thing that has inspired me the most are dreams when sleeping or just when day dreaming. There is also internet culture related stuff like occult type things that has had an effect on me.

Alright, keep one thing in mind, this story is a bit of a test run for me, an experiment. I have very little experience writing but I have read hundreds of thousands of fanfics, so I have a good idea what to do. I will try the best I can.

As for updating, I have a goal of 500 words minimum per day and aim for about a 2000 words but 1000 words seems to be the average before I can write no more. I will be posting about every two to four weeks or so. Possible up to six weeks, but who knows. I aim for a minimum of about 10k words per chapter, but that depends on many other factors as well. Over all, this is all pretty subjective, so do not expect it to adhere strictly to this, but this is my goal.

Please take care of me and I hope you enjoy. Take it easy!
