Jade jumped awake at the sudden sound of her Monster Book of Monsters as it tried to rattle free of its chains in the corner of her room where all her other school things sat.
"Shut up." Jade yawned towards the book and a low growl came from it as it settled down, realizing its efforts weren't going to get it anywhere. A soft knock came from her door and a second later her father peeked his head in,
"I thought you'd be up already." He stated and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion as she kicked her blankets off.
"Why? What time is it?"
"Almost ten." Jade paused before quickly hurrying to her closet,
"Why didn't anyone tell me?" She called as she skimmed through her clothes to find something to wear.
"I didn't know you still needed to be woken up every morning." He joked but Jade came out of her closet with a glare on her face and he held up his hands,
"Okay, bad time for a joke." He entered her room and grabbed Ezekiel's cage. "I'll bring him down for you, is your trunk ready?"
"I just need to throw my books in." He nodded,
"I'll send up Rodrick." Jade took the few moments she had alone to change and throw up her hair.
"You look rough." Her brother apparated into her room and bent down to pick up her trunk.
"No, I don't." Jade draped her ponytail over her shoulder and played with the end of her hair. She'd be seeing her friends soon, maybe she should change, in case she really didn't look that presentable.
"I'm just messing with you." Her brother told her once he saw her looking back over to her closet. "Jeez, girls." Jade picked up a stray shirt lying on the floor and flung it at him. Rodrick watched as it barely made itself halfway before landing on the floor.
"My books still need to go in there." She told him as he began lifting it and he dropped it with a loud thud and threw it open. "I have no idea how I'm going to fit them in," Jade spoke mostly to herself but Rodrick whipped out his wand,
"Don't worry about that." He muttered a spell and waved his wand before gathering her books and dumping them in.
"What'd you just do?" She asked,
"An extension charm." He told her and she hurried to her closet, grabbed a handful of clothes, and threw them inside. "I think you have enough clothes." He clasped the trunk shut and picked it up with a groan, "Hurry up, don't want to be late." Jade looked in the mirror and gave herself a once-over. Her father often teased her about how much she'd grown to care about her appearance but Jade believed all girls cared. Her mother's voice whispered in her head, she had a family name to uphold. Jade turned and looked over her room in case she missed anything before making her way down the stairs to find her mother running from the kitchen to the living room.
"Come now, we're going to be late." She told Jade. She had been worried when she first woke up but as she glanced at the clock she saw that they comfortably still had about half an hour.
"We have plenty of time." Jade tried to calm her mother while she looked over all of Jade's things, making sure everything was in order.
"Well, I'd like to have a proper moment before having to send you off." Her mother said,
"I won't be coming with you this year." Rodrick came up behind Jade and she frowned,
"Why not?"
"I've got a possible job offer at St. Mungo's." This was the first Jade was hearing about it. She knew her brother wanted to be a healer but she hadn't known he was actively looking for a job, he was always just loafing around whenever she saw him.
"Oh, congratulations." She said after a few seconds,
"Thanks, J. Don't worry, I'll still see you during holiday breaks."
"Will you?" Jade asked and her brother's smile faltered a little, they teased each other almost all the time, but Jade hated whenever her brother was gone. All her life she'd only spent breaks with him since there was such a gap between their ages. She found it hard to think about the fact that she'd probably not spend any more time than that until she was out of school and that was years away.
"Yes, I promise." Jade nodded and he brought her close and kissed her forehead. "Go on, don't want mum to blame me if you guys are late." Jade stepped into the fireplace as her father grabbed a fistful of floo powder.
"Good luck," Jade called to her brother,
"Thanks, you too." With their goodbyes finished her father cast them away and Jade watched as her brother's face disappeared in the green flames.
