MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE OWL HOUSE'S 'THEM'S THE BREAKS, KID'.

A Half-Forgotten Tune

"I'll keep you safe, Eda," Raine vowed as they watched the ashes of the note float away. "I promise."

Raine stood on the parapets of the Emperor's castle, the darkening sky casting long shadows around them. For a while now, ever since they woke up from the sigil imprisonment, the Head Bard had to pretend that Terra's tea was working and play the part of obedient Coven Leader to the Emperor. Challenging, but Raine managed. After all, they were quite the performer.

Raine's cover was almost blown when the Owl Lady attempted to rescue them. It hurt so much to act like that around her, like they hadn't reconnected after all these years, and to fight her. However, they just couldn't get her involved again.

Raine couldn't lose another friend again.

Again?

Raine shook their head, touching their forehead and closing their eyes. The slight headaches they've been having since waking up confused them. It was almost as if their brain was trying to dig up a buried memory, but the hole was just getting bigger and nothing was being found. It felt like a missing note, a forgotten song of a place long gone.

Like a ballad of a young heroine with a sad fate.

Raine opened their eyes and stared up at the horizon, the skull of the Titan looming in the distance.

It was probably a side-effect from that accursed tea. Raine will most likely need to put more power into his whistling spell. They can't get sidetracked by a fuzzy memory of a greenish blob. The fate of the Isles was at stake.

Raine turned away from the ledge and strode along the roof, heading inside. As they walked, they hummed a tune they must have picked up from a music box they heard in passing.

Well, look at that. I made an epilogue. As soon as I saw the episode, I had to write this. So happy that Terra's tea of evil is being foiled by Raine's own cleverness. I'm so relieved I could kiss someone (on the side of their face though. Not just grab someone and force a kiss on some guy's lips without permission). But then I immediately thought of this fic and couldn't ignore the urge to write. Raine may still have their waking memories, but their time in the in-between realm is just out of reach. Yet the feeling is still there, like when you wake up from a dream you can't recall but you are aware of it on some level. I do wish Raine could save Marcy, but it's up to Anne and Sasha and the Plantars now. I hope they hurry. Darcy haunts my nightmares every time I think of those eyes…

Stay weird, my fellow nerds and maybe leave a review?
