"WOOOOO IT'S PARTY TIME!" Gabby sang as she danced around. The liquid in her red solo cup sloshed messily everywhere as she twirled around the dance floor. She grinned as she finally spotted the birthday girl, sandwiched between two hunky guys. Her vision blurred as she sauntered over to throw a heavy arm across her best friends' shoulders.
"Havin fun yet?" Gabby slurred as she swayed them both back and forth. Amara glanced bashfully at her before tentatively nodding her head. Gabby snorted at her friend's behavior. She knew the small girl beneath her arm was anything but shy. Once she got used to having so many cute guys around, she would be the craziest one here. With another snort she grabbed Amara's arm and dragged her further onto the dance floor, Amaras tinkling laughter following behind.
As the night drug on Amara found herself standing on the second floor of the club overlooking the dance floor. Her tiara had long since disappeared and her birthday satchel resembled more of a belt then anything. She smiled in content as she watched her friends dance below. She should've known that Gabby wasn't going to listen to her when she asked for a small party. Even though it was HER birthday she had had no say in the matter as Gabby had rounded up all their friends to put together a surprise party. Despite her protests however, she secretly loved it. Being the daughter of a drug dealer and a crack head, she hadn't really cared much for underage drinking and illegal drugs, but as her twenty first birthday drew closer, she had started to feel more and more curious. About the alcohol, not the drugs. She vowed to never try drugs for fear of becoming like her birth parents. She could feel her walls start to slide down as the alcohol flowed through her veins. Tonight, she had promised herself that she would let go and enjoy herself without her usual level of paranoia and distrust. After the hellish year they'd all gone through last year, they had all managed to pull through and were reaping the benefits. Amara closed her eyes and took a deep breath, savoring the moment.
Shouts filled the air as Gabby and Amara stumbled through their favorite park. The party had ended hours before but as usual the duo found themselves laughing hysterically under the full moon, metal chains clinking as they thundered through the park, swinging on swings, hanging from trees, and climbing the structures in drunken glee. Laughter, shouts of joy, shouts of pain, but most of all happiness could be heard in the crisp night air.
"AHHHH, we did its Mara!" Gabby drunkenly cheered as the two fell down on the platform at the top of the slide. Amara snorted boyishly at the childhood nickname but said nothing else as Gabby rolled them around. They giggled and jabbed playfully at each other as they gazed up at the stars.
"How ya feelin?" Gabby asked while looking at Amara. Her friend had always loved nature and was always noticeably different on full moons. Gabby chewed her lips as she recalled all the nights when they were younger. The nights where her childhood best friend had been a completely different person in the moons light, like a monster. She had mellowed out over the years, now she was a little extra irritable or (depending on how her day went) she could even be her sweetest. It was always hard to tell. But tonight, face still rosy from the alcohol and dancing, there was no traces of that angry monster that terrorized everyone when they were kids. No remanence of the distrustful teenager who savagely beat anyone who looked at her wrong. Instead, there was a soft look in her eyes as she stared directly at the moon. Her lips pulled into a small smile as she thought about all they'd been through.
"Yeah, I think I'm alright."
Finally at damn near two o'clock in the morning the girls finally stumbled into Amara's house. Amara had started to sober up about an hour ago and now she was tired and cranky. But seeing the happiness in her best friends' eyes prompted her to keep her mouth shut and just enjoy the night. But damn did she miss her bed. She flung Gabby down ungracefully on the bed before plopping tiredly down beside her. She cringed as Gabby's snore roared through the dark room. With a glare she turned over and promptly passed the fuck out.
She knew she was dreaming. She distinctly remembered going to bed in her room yet here she stood barefoot in the middle of some random forest. She quirked a brow as she studied her surroundings. It looked like the type of forest they would use in a horror movie. It was dark and silent with a light fog illuminating the surroundings. Birds and other wild animals could be heard in the distance. She frowned but started walking forward anyway. The trees were all taller than any she'd ever seen, and she didn't recognize the leaves and ferns scattered around the ground. Her bare feet were cold against the hard earth, and she could feel the ground shifting beneath her feet. She froze as she heard the snap of a twig nearby. Her eyes swiveled back and forth but she couldn't for the life of her see anything in the shadows of the trees. She stiffened as a low guttural snarl sounded from somewhere behind her. Every hair on the back of her neck rose as the sound of claws scraped the earth. Even though she knew it was a dream her instincts still kicked in and she took off in a mad dash. She scrambled and hurled over branches and bushes, desperately trying to flee whatever the hell it was that was after her. She ran for what felt like hours, her breath coming out in ragged gasps. Without warning her feet tripped over a buried branch and she was sent hurtling through the air. She landed in a heap with an audible gasp as the wind was knocked out of her body. The growling drew closer as she laid there gasping. She could sense the thing behind her, waiting for her to turn around. She balled her fists before turning slowly to glance behind her. As her eyes traveled the surroundings, she barely had time to scream before a dark figure was on her.
"AAAAAAHHHHHHHH" Amara bolted up with a scream as sweat poured down her face. Gabby was up and was frantically shaking her in a desperate attempt to wake her.
"Amara what the hell!? You've been screaming for ten minutes!" Gabby's eyes were wild and terrified as she clutched her best friend. It had been years since a nightmare had actually frightened Amara to the point of screaming and sweating. But Amara shook her head as her breathing slowed.
"It's nothing, just a dream"
"A nightmare. You had a nightmare. A terrible one if those screams were anything to go by" Gabby stared warily at her friend. Amara only glanced at her before shrugging and plopping back down. She didn't want to talk about what she saw. Gabby would just tell her she's been watching to many movies.
"I said I'm fine, just go back to sleep Gabby"
"Technically you didn't say you were fine, just that it was nothing" Gabby pointed out matter of factly. She squealed as Amara rudely shoved her off the bed. Laughing she quickly climbed back up and curled into Amara's back. Whatever it was that Amara saw in her dream, Gabby knew she wouldn't discuss it easily. With a worried frown she nuzzled her friends back and fell back asleep.
"Amara, hey Amara? Helloooooo earth to Amaraaaaa!" Shawn snapped his fingers in front of the girls' face. Her eyes were dazed, and she had been sitting at the computer for five minutes. He furrowed his brow as he continued to snap for her attention. Gabby had told the friend group this morning about Amara's nightmare the night before and how she'd been acting off since. Everyone worried for her, but they knew getting her to admit if anything was wrong would be incredibly difficult. Finally, the dazed girl snapped out of her thoughts. With a sharp glance at him she quickly shooed his hands away.
"What do you want, and why did you put me at the computers? I need a book on the Gettysburg address." She huffed as she looked at the computer screen. It looked like Shawn had her look up something, but she couldn't remember what. Shawn froze as his friend ranted. His eyebrows shot up his forehead and disappeared behind his bangs as she mentioned not being at the computer.
"Amara, I just got here. You were already here at the computer by the time I walked over. You've been staring at the screen for five minutes. I only just got your little air head back to earth." Her nose wrinkled at the jab, but she said nothing else. She finally looked, really looked, at the contents of the screen before her. On the screen was search results of some town she'd never heard of. Shawn placed his arm on the back of her chair and leaned over to read the screen as well. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose as he read the words aloud.
"Multiple unexplained deaths in Beacon Hills over the last three months. A surge in animal attacks has occurred in Beacon Hills over the last few months. Beacon Hills police department remains stumped as unexplainable cases in Beacon Hills pile up." Silence fell over them as the words hung in the air.
"Where's Beacon Hills?" Amara was the first to break the silence as she continued to scroll down the page. She'd never heard of such a town before, and she had no idea why she was looking it up.
"How should I know? YOU'RE the one who was zombie internet surfing remember?" Shawn snorted as he stood back up. "Look it up, lets see where its at." He bent back down as Amara typed in the town.
"Beacon Hills, California."
"California? Why are you looking up a town from there?"
"I don't know, I've never even heard of the place."
"You're randomly looking up a town a thousand miles away that you've never even heard of, and you don't know why?"
"Essentially yeah" Shawn stared down at her as if she'd grown a second head, but she only shrugged. She was probably still a little buzzed from the night before, and the city had been the filming place of some show she'd probably watched. She decided to ignore it and stood up, grabbing her bag and slinging it over her shoulder in the process.
"Imma go, I got work in five minutes." Again, Shawn gave her a funny look.
"Amara… it's three forty-five. You're shift started an hour ago." He watched as her eyes widened and a string of colorful curses flooded from her mouth. He rolled his eyes as she frantically grabbed her stuff and started running for the door. Her boss was going to murder her
"My god she is SO unlady like. How in the world do boys just fall at her feet?"
Weeks passed and Amara's erratic behavior had only gotten worse. Her friends often found her randomly standing somewhere with a dazed look on her face. She was also constantly writing the words "BEACON HILLS" everywhere. When asked why she never had an answer and was always as surprised as her friends. Another thing her friends had noticed is that she kept drawing the same pair of eyes over and over. Amara was a talented girl when it came to drawing but she could only free hand if she was looking at a picture. It was impossible for her to draw something from memory, and she could only draw with an animated style. She'd never been able to draw anything realistically, picture or not. So, when she suddenly started drawing a perfect picture of these pair of eyes all over her journals, they had all been stumped. They were never in color though.
"I'm worried about you Mara; you've been all out of sorts ever since your party. Are you sure you're feeling, okay?" Gabby asked one afternoon. The girls were at Gabby's grandparents house, watching tv and just discussing life. Gabby had finally been asked out by the boy she had crushed on all through high school and Amara's boss had given her a raise. Amara quirked a brow at her friend before returning to her sketch book, only to freeze as she saw the drawing. With a quick glance towards Gabby, she quickly closed the sketchbook and slid it away, but it was too late.
"What were you drawing?" Gabby asked as she made her way over to the bed.
"Nothing, just some random- Gabby wait!" But Gabby's giraffe arms were longer and faster than Amara's. She quickly snatched the book up and skimmed through the pages, her brow furrowing in worry.
"Amara… this is serious. You're bordering obsession with these eyes, and you don't even know whose they are!" Gabby sat down next to her lifelong friend and studied her appearance. She noticed with a shock that her friend suddenly looked guilty and uncertain. Well, that was new. Amara never felt guilt or uncertainty unless it was something serious.
"Oh, what the hell did you do now!?" Gabby threw her hands up in exasperation. Amara glared at her before looking back down at her hands. She was wringing her fingers and biting her lips, quirks that didn't go unnoticed by Gabby. "Amara your looking guilty as all hell all of a sudden and we all know you're twisted ass is incapable of guilt so spit it out." Again, Amara shot her a nasty look.
"I'm not guilty of shit." She snapped, "It's just…. Remember the night of my party? When I had that dream?"
"Nightmare, and yeah what about it" Amara rolled her eyes but continued on. "Well, the truth is, ever since then I've been constantly thinking of this town, Beacon Hills. But I don't know WHY. I've never been there, never even heard of the place, but it's like something is drawing me there." Amara glanced nervously at her friend to gauge her reaction. She knew that her behavior as of late was concerning but she couldn't help it. There was something in that town that was calling out to her, and she was determined to know what.
Gabby glanced sadly at her friend. Shawn had told her about the day in the library where Amara had been searching up this strange town in California. Whatever was there it wanted Amara there, badly.
"There's another thing… The eyes. You know I can't color for shit but, the other day I spaced out and when I came to, I had drawn this." Amara pulled out a folded piece of paper from her phone case. Gabby gave her a quizzical look but scooted over closer to see the paper. As Amara unfolded the paper Gabby's jaw dropped and she let out an audible gasp. On the paper was the pair of eyes that Amara had been drawing over and over, but these were colored in. A ring of dark brown faded into light brown then finally flecks of yellow simmered into a green over tone with a light blue base. The colors mixed perfectly together and were blended almost professionally. Gabby quirked her brow as she studied the picture.
"Since when could you color and shade?" She asked as she studied the eyes over and over. She couldn't deny the fact that she was impressed.
"I can't. I failed coloring in kindergarten for fucks sake how would I be able to shade those complicated ass colors perfectly? I still color people purple sometimes!" Amara threw her hands up in exasperation. She was proud of the handiwork if she was being honest, but it did freak her out a little. She had tried to re color the eyes again while conscious and it turned out like all her other coloring attempts. Shit.
"You're not possessed, are you? Do we need to take you to an exorcist again?" Gabby asked as she set the paper down and stood up. She made her way over to her dresser and opened the top drawer. She rifled through the contents, looking for the old business card of the last exorcist they reached out to.
"No Gabby what, oh for fucks sake don't you dare! I'm not possessed!" Amara shrieked as she jumped up to drag her friend away from the dresser. She eyed the drawer apprehensively, not at all impressed with the idea of calling that crazy old sack of bones again. She shuddered as she recalled the day, they had her go through an exorcism. She didn't talk to any of her friends for weeks afterwards. Traitors.
"I'm not possessed, okay? I just, I need to go to this place, just for a bit ya know? I gotta know what's there." Amara chewed at her lip as she stared at a random spot on the floor.
"Are you crazy? You wanna go to a random town because you feel drawn to it? Have you lost your mind? Actually, wait don't answer that," Amara punched her arm, "Ouch bitch I'm just saying! This is exactly how young women go missing. You're five feet tall with the face of a cherub Amara, you're going to die!"
"Well damn thanks for the vote of confidence" Amara huffed as she folded her arms. She puffed her cheeks out defiantly as she and Gabby had a stare down.
"Promise me you won't go Amara, it's to dangerous!" Gabby snapped. Amara rolled her eyes but unfolded her arms and relaxed her stance.
"Fine." She huffed. She knew Gabby wasn't going to let it go
"Good. Now get the hell out. I'm tired." Amara laughed as she gathered her things and left for the night with a promise to text Gabby the next day.
A couple weeks passed, and Amara was feeling antsy. The feeling of longing had suddenly started to plague her, and she was sick of it. As the days passed it had started to feel like a whole was in her heart, leaving her miserable and lonely.
One night she couldn't take it anymore. The feeling kept dogging at her heels and it had started to affect her life. She was in her room late one night, quickly packing her suitcase. She planned to leave in the dead of night without bothering anyone. She had already written a note to her parents saying she was going on a little vacation and that she promised she would be back soon. She had just finished zipping up her suitcase and was turning towards her door when the sound of a throat being cleared paused her in her tracks. She groaned and slumped her shoulders as she turned to look at Gabby standing in her doorway. She giggled nervously as she tried to think of an explanation for her late-night packing.
"Going somewhere?" Gabby said. She had her arms crossed and was leaning against the door frame giving Amara her 'Don't bullshit me' look. Amara flinched as she realized she had been caught red handed.
"Okay yeah so I decided to go to the town, sue me," Amara huffed stubbornly," But Gabby I HAVE to do this, I gotta know what's there!" Amara quickly pleaded. She couldn't take not knowing anymore. She would fight Gabby if she had to, but she was going and that was final. Gabby watched her as she paced back and forth while ranting.
"I know." Amara paused in the middle of her rant and lifted her head up sharply to stare at Gabby. "I know how you are Amara. You're the most stubborn person I've ever met and if you want something you get it, fuck what others say." Amara's ears perked up and a slow smile crept into her eyes.
"Thank you Gabby I promise I won't be gone- "
"I'm coming with you."
"Absolutely the fuck not."
"Why"
"''Cuz its dangerous!"
"So?"
"So!? I'm not gonna allow you to get hurt!" Amara whisper screeched. She didn't wanna wake her parents up and deal with them to. But she didn't want Gabby to come. This wasn't like those times where they randomly drove off a few towns away or drove a state over for a haircut. This was a thousand miles away and she didn't even really know what she was looking for! But Gabby continued to stare at her, not budging. If Amara wanted to go so badly, she was gonna have to except the travel buddy.
With a sigh Amara slumped her shoulders. She knew she wasn't going to win this fight and her window was closing. She had to leave soon if she was gonna stay on schedule.
"Fine, you can come." She conceded. Gabby gave a triumphant smirk and pushed off the door frame.
"I know that's why I brought this" She strolled in the room with her suitcase wheeling behind her. Amara rolled her eyes before smirking as well.
"Well, alrighty then. Beacon Hills here we come."
I've never written a story like this before so please bear with me. I still have yet to finish the series so no spoilers. As usual feed back and reviews are welcomed and loved
