Day Six: Hope's Peak!

"Oma, get back here!"

"Nee hee hee!" Kokichi snickered as he stayed just out of Kyoko's reach. "Aww, but I love playing tag with you! It's so much fun."

An irritated vein pulsed in Kyoko's forehead at Kokichi's taunt. "This isn't a game, Oma. Take responsibility for your actions!"

"Sorry, but I have to get to class. Thanks for the fun, Vice-Headmistress! Let's play again sometime!"

Pumping his legs in an impressive burst of speed, Kokichi dashed down the hallway and out of sight, leaving Kyoko in the dust. Exhausted from the futile chase, Kyoko panted, out of breath as she tried to refill her lungs with oxygen. Once she had recovered, the former detective gritted her teeth in frustration and groaned.

"I…take it he got away again…?"

Kyoko turned around and saw Makoto approaching. He smiled sympathetically as he rested a hand on her shoulder, causing her to sigh.

"I swear, that boy has a way of getting on my nerves. I can't remember the last time I got this exhausted chasing a suspect. I think I'm getting rusty."

"Well, it has been a while since you were a detective, and most students aren't fast enough to evade a grown adult." Makoto commented, awkwardly scratching his cheek. "I guess Oma-kun's just the exception to the rule."

"…Still…if I don't get Oma to my office, he'll never be disciplined. I'll never be able to live it down if I just let his pranks slide because he's nigh impossible to catch."

Makoto smiled in amusement, admiring once more Kyoko's pride and dedication to her job. He frowned as he saw her sigh and pull out her smartphone.

"Ano…Kyoko, what are you doing…?"

"…Shikata wa nai…" Kyoko muttered before informing him, "I'm calling in reinforcements. Desperate times call for desperate measures."

She held the phone to her hear, waiting as the rings echoed in her ear. She smiled in relief as the receiver finally picked up and spoke into the phone.

"Hi, it's me. I need your assistance on a certain matter…"

"Ano…Kyoko…?" Makoto began hesitantly, the two of them waiting in Makoto's office. "Are you sure this isn't…overkill? I mean…Oma-kun's just been doing harmless pranks. It's not like he's hurting anyone; this isn't like when Junko pulled those dangerous pranks on us when we were his age."

Kyoko sighed, shaking her head in exasperation. "Makoto, I love you, and I've never questioned your leadership as Headmaster. But sometimes you can be too soft on the students, hence why disciplining them is my job. We can't allow Oma's pranking streak to continue. Otherwise, he'll think it's okay to continue harassing the staff and students."

Makoto sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Alright, alright, I'll trust your judgment. Just promise your reinforcements won't go overboard, okay? I don't want Oma-kun to get hurt."

Kyoko nodded, promising "Don't worry, the professionals I've called are perfect for safely detaining unruly children…"

*Knock Knock*

"Speak of the devil." Kyoko smirked before calling "Enter."

Makoto's eyes widened as the door opened, allowing the two familiar individuals to enter. "Maki?!"

"Hey, nice office, Makoto!" Kaito waved, grinning as he followed Maki inside. "Looks pretty fancy schmancy."

Maki rolled her eyes, elbowing him gently. "You can gawk at Makoto's office later, you idiot. We have a job to do, remember?"

"Right, I remember." Kaito gave Makoto a thumbs up. "Don't worry, you two. Maki Roll and I will catch this delinquent red-handed, or my name isn't Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars!"

Maki sighed before she approached Kyoko. "I suppose you have a photo of the student you want us to track down?"

Kyoko nodded, reaching a hand into her jacket. She pulled out a miniature photo and handed it to her.

"His name's Kokichi Oma. He calls himself the Supreme Leader of D.I.C.E. He's not malicious, but his pranks are an eyesore on this academy. Catching him should be no problem for the would-be Ultimate Child Caregiver, right?"

Maki nodded. "I'll find and catch him as quick as I can. Come on, Kaito. We have a job to do."

"Alright!" Kaito cheered as he followed Maki out of the office.

Once he closed the door, Makoto and Kyoko glanced at each other, hoping that Maki and Kaito were up to the task.

"Man…where is that little guy?" Kaito grumbled as he scanned the halls, occasionally glancing down at the photo in his hand.

"…Obviously if he were that easy to find, then they wouldn't have asked me to help catch him."

"Right…my bad…" Kaito smiled sheepishly before asking, "So…what do we do, Maki Roll?"

"It'll help if we can get some information about his usual hideaways." Maki suggested before pointing ahead. "Look, there's a few students over there. Let's just ask them if they've seen him recently."

"Ah, good idea, Maki Roll!" Kaito grinned as they approached the group. "Hey, can we-"

"Stay back, you degenerate male!" A young girl with dark olive-gray hair that was tied in two helix-like braids glared at them, taking a defensive posture. "If you dare try to touch Himiko or Angie, I'll use my Neo-Aikido skills to throw you across the hall!"

"…Stop it." A short, redheaded girl wearing a witch's hat mumbled in an unenthusiastic protest. "Besides, Vice-Headmistress Naegi warned you against throwing boys anymore."

"Kehehe…" A tall boy wearing a face mask over his mouth snickered. "I for one would be very interested to see how harshly you get disciplined for a repeat offense."

Maki sighed pinching the bridge of her nose. "We don't want any trouble. We just want to ask you guys a question."

A pale blonde, tan-skinned girl hummed, approaching the couple. She narrowed her eyes, seeming to scrutinize them as she pursed her lips.

"Wh-What's with the intense stare…?" A nervous Kaito stammered, causing Maki to sigh.

"Stop being so nervous, you idiot. You're just making us look more suspicious."

As Kaito tried to calm his nerves, Maki stared the tan-skinned girl in the eyes, her experience with children aiding her composure. A brief, yet tense silence passed between the two before the girl's lips tugged into a satisfied smile as she clapped.

"Nya ha ha! Atua has spoken; he says that these two can be trusted." Maki raised an eyebrow as Kaito sighed in relief. "Allow us to introduce ourselves. My name is Angie Yonaga."

"…I am the amazing Himiko Yumeno." The red-haired girl followed.

"Well…if Himiko thinks it's okay, then…I guess I'll give you a chance." The olive-haired girl hesitantly nodded. "I'm Tenko Chabashira."

"Kehehe…I am Korekiyo Shinguji." He eyed Maki for a brief moment before shaking his head. "Such a pity; I doubt you'd make a good friend for my sister."

"Hey!" Kaito scowled, clenching his fist and gritting his teeth. "What do you mean?! Maki Roll's a great friend! Your sister doesn't know what she's missing out on!"

"Kehehe…" Kiyo chuckled. "Amusing, you think my judgment, my sister's judgment, is wrong? You truly are a naïve man."

"…Enough." Maki's hard and fast voice cut through the argument, silencing whatever argument Kaito was about to make. Turning her glare on her boyfriend, Maki scolded "We're not here to make friends; we're here to do a job."

Kaito grumbled unintelligibly, but otherwise quieted down. Sighing, Maki pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling her exasperation drain from her mind.

"Sorry about that. The idiot here is Kaito Momota, and my name is Maki Harukawa. We're running an errand for the Headmaster and Vice-Headmistress."

"Wait, you are?!" Tenko exclaimed in surprise.

Kaito beamed proudly, boasting "That's right, Maki Roll and I are their good friends! We even babysit their daughter!"

Too much information, idiot… Maki sweatdropped before Angie smiled and nodded.

"I see, I see. Now, what question do you have for us? I shall consult Atua's great wisdom to answer your query."

This girl is nuts… Maki thought before taking the photo from Kaito. "We're looking for this boy here. Do you know where we can find him?"

"Hmm…ohh, you're looking for Kokichi!" Angie exclaimed, slapping her palms against her cheeks.

Tenko meanwhile hardened her eyes, steam appearing to pipe out of her ears. "Ohh, that degenerate male! What did he do this time?"

"I'm not exactly privy to what he did or didn't do." Maki explained. "All I know is Vice-Headmistress Naegi asked me to trach him down and haul him to her office for discipline."

"Yeah…" Kaito rubbed the back of his head. "Any of you guys know where he might be hiding?"

"Himiko would know best…" Kiyo chuckled "Kehehe…the boy flirts with her all the time."

"Gh, he drives me crazy!" Tenko exclaimed. "The way he strings poor Himiko along, toying with her heart…of all the degenerate males in this school, he's the worst of the worst!"

"Nyeh…he has taken me to some of his hiding places before. If you have a map, I can highlight them with my magic."

Maki hesitantly nodded at Himiko's offer before she took out a map Kayoko had given her. Himiko took out a wand and tapped it on several spots.

"There, check those places. I'd go with you…but chasing Kokichi is such a pain."

Maki nodded. "Thank you. You four should probably head to class now."

"That's right!" Tenko exclaimed, her eyes widening in realization. "Then we shall leave the capture of that degenerate male to you! Let's go, Himiko!"

"Byeonara!" Angie waved, following Himiko, Tenko, and Kiyo.

"Alright!" Kaito grinned. "Now we know where to find Kokichi!"

"…Well, we have some ideas." Maki sighed. "Come on, let's go check them out."

"You got it! Lead the way, Maki Roll!"

Maki rolled her eyes as she walked down the hall, Kaito following close behind.

"Nee hee hee!" Kokichi snickered as he sat in a circle with several other teenagers in matching black and white checkered outfits. "I knew it was a good idea to hold our D.I.C.E. meetings in the Staff Room. The Vice-Headmistress would never think to look here, as long as we time them during classes."

As the other D.I.C.E. members laughed, Maki and Kaito peered at the juveniles from behind a desk. "Well, looks like their intel was right…" The former assassin whispered under her breath.

Kaito nodded, making sure to keep his voice quiet as a mouse. "So, what's the plan, Maki Roll?"

"…See that light switch over there?" Maki's eyes flickered to the light switch by the entrance. "I'm gonna shut it off. As they're panicking from confusion, we'll make our moves. You restrain the goons, I'll take Oma."

Kaito nodded, watching as Maki silently crawled on the floor, putting all her stealth training as an assassin to use. Once she reached the entrance, Maki silently stood up, glancing at Kaito as her fingers gripped the switch. With a nod of approval from Kaito, Maki flipped the switch, covering the room in darkness.

"Now, let's discuss our next mis-HEY!" Kokichi exclaimed. "What's going on?!"

As the D.I.C.E. gang nervously looked around in total darkness, Maki and Kaito made their moves. He rushed towards the goons, using the flashlight app on his phone to navigate in the darkness.

"AH! MONSTER!" They screamed before being tackled by the would-be astronaut.

"W-What the…who are…" The suddenly nervous Kokichi trailed off, frozen in fear as he came face to face with Maki, her deathly signature stare illuminated in the faint light. "Ah!" He wheezed as Maki gently gripped him by the throat, lifting him off the ground.

As Kokichi uselessly kicked at Maki, she walked over to the light switch and turned it back on. Gripping the back collar of his shirt, she finally released his throat and put him down on the ground. As Kokichi gasped for breath, Maki glanced over at Kaito, who grinned and gave her a thumbs up. She nodded with satisfaction as she saw his hand gripping the back of all their collars.

"Wh-Who are you…?" Kokichi demanded, his eyes narrowed in annoyance. "And how did you find me?"

"…Maki Harukawa."

"And I'm Kaito Momota!"

Maki rolled her eyes at Kaito's interjection, explaining "Vice-Headmistress Naegi asked me to escort you to her office so you could be disciplined. As for how we found you, your friend Yumeno gave us a list of your hideout spots."

Kokichi's eyes widened before he groaned, "Aww maaan, I can't believe cute little Himiko ratted me out…well, guess I lose this time. Alright, I give up."

Maki stared incredulously at Kokichi for the briefest of seconds before she shook it away. "Alright, come on, Kaito. Let's bring them to Kyoko's office."

"You got it, Maki Roll!"

Kaito eagerly followed Maki, dragging the trio of goons behind him as they groaned. Kokichi meanwhile looked up at Maki, his lips tugging into a smile of admiration as his eyes sparkled.

"Well, I must admit, I'm impressed." Kyoko smiled gratefully at Maki, who along with Kaito stood behind the grumpy D.I.C.E. members as they sat in chairs. "Not only did you manage to catch Oma, you also caught his goons as well. Thank you both; you've done a great service for Hope's Peak Academy."

Maki nodded. "Happy to help. If there's nothing else, Kaito and I should get going."

"Aww, so soon?" Kokichi whined. "But we were having so much fun! I finally found a worthy adversary other than the Vice-Headmistress."

"Quiet, Oma." Kyoko glared at the boy before nodding at Maki. "Of course, again, thank you for everything. I'll see you later, Maki, Kaito."

"Alright, bye, Kyoko!" Kaito waved.

"Bye, Maki Roll!" Kokichi grinned, waving as Maki's eyes suddenly darkened. "Come play again soon, okay?"

"…Do you want to die…?" Maki seethed, clenching her fists in anger.

"Aww, did I touch a nerve…?"

"Maki, let's go." Kaito pulled her by the wrist before she could stomp over to the little brat. "Let's leave him to Kyoko, alright?"

Maki exhaled through her nose as Kaito dragged her outside, closing the door behind them. Kyoko sighed before issuing her own glare towards the grinning Kokichi. "Oma…you are in so. much. trouble."
