I rewatched New Girl and really, how good is this show? And because of that all the plot bunnies are loose and I decided to do something about it - especially because even though I loved that Jess and Nick got together I HATED the ending. So you think that I was going to write something about them, right? Right, but first I had to do something about this. I low-key LOVE LOVE LOVE Schmidt and Jess' friendship and I thought about this after rewatching for the millionth time 6x01.
I took some liberty with this episode, in which she doesn't tell him at the bank, only Cece.
I didn't review this and english is not my first language so I apologize for any mistake.
The title is from the song "North", by Sleeping at Last.
I don't own New Girl - because if I did Jess and Nick would have the development we deserve.
He poured her another glass and sat back on the couch.
Cece had to go solve some problem at her job, leaving Jess alone at the house. When he arrived, half an hour ago, she just nodded at him and remained still.
She had been weird, well, weirder, ever since Nick returned from New Orleans and he didn't know why.
He has an inkling as to the reason why, but he is not sure if he wants to open that can of worms.
Looking to the side, he sees her play with the glass she's holding, sporting a sad look with her big blue eyes and changes his mind.
Even if he doesn't want to, he will do something about it. No one deserves to be sad, especially her. Unfortunately, she made him be a better person.
That and Cece will be really mad if she comes home and finds her looking like a lost puppy.

"That smells good."
He turns just in time to see her sitting in the kitchen counter.
"Of course it does." He puts the sauce inside the pan and turns off the stove. He serves her a portion and puts something for himself.
She raises one eyebrow as she sees him walking to the couch.
"What?"
"Your rule about not eating in the couch." She says, picking up her plate and her glass.
He shrugs his shoulders with a small smile that she knows it's his way of offering support.
She walks and sits next to him with a small smile on her face.

"I'll never understand your love for this horror movies." She says and sips more of her wine.
"That's because you live in a rainbow world where pigs wear tutu skirts and birds sing and people are happy all the time."
She sighs. "Not all the time."
He turns his head to look at her.
She takes a deep breath before continuing, "I know that you don't like talking about feelings, but I really appreciate what you did today."
"But I like you." He says softly and her eyes fills with tears because she is so, so lucky. "And that's the first and the last time that you'll hear me say those words bec—"
His mouth is full of her hair as she throws her arms around him, crying her eyes out.
He hugs her and if he adjusts himself so that she gets more comfortable, no one has to know.

When Cece arrives later than she expected, she finds the house dark, with only the light of the tv on.
Asleep on the couch are the two people she loves the most in this world and by the looks of it, they don't need her help right now.
Schmidt opens his eyes and looks at her, a sleepy smile on his face.
She waves at him and looks down at her best friend.
"It's about Nick, isn't it?"
She nods sadly.
"That damn hobo." He shakes his head. "And this damn hippie."
He looks down at her as Cece walks over to the bedroom and returns minutes later wearing comfortable clothes and carrying a big blanket with her.
She sits on the other side of her best friend and looks at her husband and smiles because that's all they can do.
