CHAPTER 2
The first two weeks she remained in the cell she had woken up in. A safety precaution in case her maybe sentient powers decided to go on a killing spree. Ember was also subjected to more testing, of which she was awake and an active participant. Having been in charge of the cosmic radiation before it had merged with her, she had valuable insight into what it had looked like before.
Every person involved with her case, now called PROJECT: PROMETHEUS, was shocked by the changes the energy source had gone through. In the first few days of being contained in the S.H.I.E.L.D facility the cosmic radiation that came from who knows where had merged and integrated itself into her very DNA. Everything about her had changed. Even her blood type was something that didn't exist, shouldn't exist.
After it was clear that Ember did have control of her powers and it wouldn't be starting up without her say-so, they began training her. First, she had to gain the ability to make her powers appear. Ember was put through everything, meditation, pain, and torture by the hands of S.H.I.E.L.D's best agents, Natasha Romanoff.
None of those things made her react, and she couldn't activate her powers. So she was put through the next test, the final method Nick Fury could think of to get her to use her powers. A near-death experience.
Ember was sedated and drugged in her sleep, and when she woke up, she was on a plane. As soon as she was awake the agents manhandled her into position. Her sleep-addled brain struggled to keep up as the plane door opened and she was greeted with blue sky and white clouds. Ember struggled as she was pushed to the edge, the man holding her the only thing preventing her fall. Ember struggled to try and release the rope that bound her hands tightly, absentmindedly taking note of the same rope bound around her ankles.
Her vision was suddenly cut off and Ember could only guess there was a blindfold on her.
She didn't have long to think about it though, because in the next moment she felt the pressure of a hand on her back and suddenly she was free falling.
The world sounded less noisy than she imagined, or maybe that was just the dread and hysteria setting in. She quickly assessed that she didn't have any sort of equipment on her. But she doubted her father would throw her out of a plane without taking safety measures. In the far corners of her mind sat a small flame of doubt, which spread like wildfire. She couldn't think like that anymore, she wasn't simply his daughter and a scientist anymore. Ember Fury was now a potential threat to Earth, a superhuman individual.
Nick Fury was not one to take liberties with the safety of Earth, even for his own family.
The instant the thought entered her mind, she could see again. Her body had lit up, burning the material covering her eyes away. She wobbled and did an unplanned backflip in the air, spreading out her unbound arms to gain a semblance of balance as her feet shot out flames that propelled her in the sky.
Thinking quick she willed the flame to do the same from her hands, stabilizing her position.
Ember floated slowly now, taking in her surroundings. She was close enough to make out the buildings below, any longer and she might have died.
Or maybe not.
Natasha floated by her, parachute above her head, and an impressed smirk on the redhead's face. "Now that was something." She said as she passed. Ember knowing that the woman couldn't exactly stop in mid-air as she had, followed alongside her. "Thanks! I'm naked under here so you think I could go back to the plane?" Natasha gave Ember a thumbs up and the woman on fire shot up in the sky, quickly figuring out the mechanics of her new abilities. As she flew, Ember left a trail of flame behind her.
A cheeky grin on her face, she flew in the sky, alongside the plane, creating a simple symbol of a flame and below that the word, PROMETHEUS.
The frown on Nick Fury's face was worth it, he did throw her out of a plane after all. Ember knew she was acting like a teenager again, but she was far too happy with her progress to even care about her father's fury.
Though she understood why he would be angry.
Everyone in the immediate vicinity saw the sign of flame in the sky. She supposed with the recent appearance of Iron-Man, S.H.I.E.L.D didn't need the public in a panic.
Like Nick Fury expected, Ember's message was on every source of media by the next day. Everyone wanted to know who Prometheus was and if they were an ally or threat. Nick had almost been shocked at her behavior, too often forgetting that despite all of Ember's maturity and calm nature, she was only 26.
He sighed and turned to face his daughter. She was in the same outfit as Natasha, though hers had been modified to withstand the heat she produced. His eyes narrowed on the obnoxious symbol she had requested to be put on the chest of her uniform. The same symbol she had traced in the sky the day before. A simple flame in a circle.
Natasha stood next to Ember a small smile pulling at her lips, though she did try her best to keep it hidden in her boss's presence.
"Ember Fury, you will be officially registered as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, and will train under Agent Romanoff, and all your missions will be taken under her supervision until you gain full control of your powers. Understood?!" He barked out, ignoring the cheeky grin his daughter had on her face as she saluted him.
Nick felt a headache creeping up, filled with worry and dread both for his daughter's safety and for the added paperwork she was sure to bring him.
"Dismissed!"
