I'm not sure how far I want this Diabolik series to go – I have some budding ideas for a "third" part to it. Let me know what you think - I think Thirst for the Unknown will be the one I'm most happy with but, if you're still reading it or enjoying it let me know what you think! xox
Chapter 18
Ayato peered out the window of their mansion.
Was this a play? Or was this an actual invite to their location? Pompous bastards. If this really was how King Burai played his warfare, no wonder his father challenged him for Demon King. He hated admitting any similarity to Him, but damn it these snakes were more of a pain in the ass than any other opposition had been. Shady freaks.
"Ayato?" Yui looked to the leash of his hand he'd been keeping on her.
"Sorry, I can't help but think what might happen if I look away from you for a moment…however…I don't want anyone sneaking in." Ayato knew he didn't want to keep his eye off Yui, but if he didn't keep an eye out who knew what would happen, so he wouldn't let go of her. Period.
"I'm sure the others won't be long…" She bit her lip. She recalled how Osama had had Ryota kidnap her from her room. Sepsei had also already snuck in as a serpent before. But it wasn't Ayato's fault. "And you can't keep an eye on me and an eye on the place Ayato. It wasn't your fault…before…or now…"
Ayato sighed. "But I can." He didn't want to do this, but it was regrettable that he couldn't be at all places at once. If he did inherit anything from his father, he at least hoped that he could attain the kind of power he had to protect Yui.
He scoffed inwardly at himself. But he didn't want to be like Him. He took out his cellphone.
Yui waited curiously as she heard the dial tone, unsure of who he was calling.
She heard a voice, but it was too muffled in his ear to tell who it was.
"So, what do I owe this pleasure? Frankly, I'm surprised your calling me."
"Yea. Look. I need two of you here stat. We got a lead, and my brothers have had to pursue it. I need two of you to watch the outside of our house while I keep an eye on Yui. The other two can keep the other school brats in line. King's orders. This isn't my first choice but I'm not about to make another mistake protecting my Eve." He shut the phone before the person could respond.
Yui blinked, unsure of what he'd just asked. It wasn't like Ayato to often take help from others nor ask for it, especially if it meant he might be admitting his own weakness or failure.
"Don't ask. I'm doing this for you Pancake. So, you owe me…not to mention, if we do go after these bastards, which we will, I don't want to give anyone an opportunity to get in the way or take you from me again. And believe me King Burai will be next after this…it might get messy. You're coming so I don't want you more than an inch from my side at any time."
She nodded silently. She breathed a small sigh of relief, a brief interruption from all of the anxiety that the last few days events had set loose on her. Ayato's fleeting, more direct, notions of his affection to her, protecting her, made her feel relieved. However, she still wished he wouldn't put so much on himself when things did go wrong.
A knock at the front door interrupted her thoughts.
Ayato opened it up, and Yui was surprised to see Ruki and Kou at the door.
"We thought Yuma and Azusa might be a bit more convincing in scaring off any doubters back at the school." Kou smiled playfully. "I'd have to say, while charm is powerful, in this case, a fist and a sadistic brother might be more effective."
"I'm still rather shocked you required us." Ruki raised his brow slightly, as he peered at the pair, landing both on Ayato and a quick glance at Yui.
"Don't tempt me. Plus, you two are staying outside." Ayato looked out behind them to the courtyard.
"Please?" Kou crossed his arms. "Quite the demanding King we have here."
"I just want to ensure Yui's safety." Ayato's eyes grew serious, moving away from snippy to blunt.
"Of course." Ruki's eyes couldn't help but pace from Ayato to Yui. He saw her surprise, but she quickly turned to Ayato with concerned ones. He knew it. He could see it. He was King. And he faithfully had his Eve.
"Ah, yes would hate to deny a request from the Sakamaki King." Kou curtseyed slightly.
"Stay safe Yui." Ruki nodded as they left to patrol the grounds.
"You know they're going to be getting it on in there carelessly while we do his dirty work." Kou stretched his arms.
Ruki sighed. "I don't doubt it. However, I saw it in both of their eyes. He is our King…even if we don't like it. And she undoubtably has chosen to be his Eve."
"Ugh…I'm disliking the Vampire Kings more and more. Past and present." Kou rolled his eyes.
"I suppose we will learn. All the more reason to be on his good side I suppose."
"You know Ruki? You play it so noble, but I just think you're good at hiding it."
"Maybe. Let's go make sure she's safe."
…
The door slammed shut.
"They weren't my first choice." Ayato muttered under his breath. He turned to look at Yui, as he suddenly felt her lips on his.
"What was that?" He looked surprised.
"Thank you for being selfless. I appreciate what you're doing Ayato."
"Yea, yea. I'm doing it for you, definitely not my preference. Now lets go." Ayato grabbed her hand, dragging her behind him.
"Where to?"
"The bedroom."
"But uh-" Yui stepped into the room just as Ayato went to grab something under the pillow.
"The dagger and my sword. Unless you were thinking something else…" Ayato raised a brow.
