Why is everything tech and superpowers? Why is there no magic, when magic might actually explain their powers better than DNA since their powers are so.. drastically implausible?
I decided to introduce magic and see how it plays out.
I am drawing on Ben Ten and Young Justice and Danny Phantom for this power.
Running her hands around the boiling potion, Maddison poured her mana inside, uttering her spells. "Leni et restituet!" The magic gathered and gathered, building until the potion turned from a sickly green into a warm forest color. Satisfied, she poured her potion into several vials. "This is great, I can help quite a few people with this." A pleased smile crossed her face as he placed everything into her potions cabinet. Runes glittered on the glass, preserving the magical elixirs from harm and expiration. Potions were expensive to make and she was not exactly rich...
Moving from her lab to her desk. she smiled at the sight of her computer as a message dinged in her email.
"I have been accepted to take the Hero Entrance Exam at UA! Awesome! I am so going to rock this... I need more training... I have no idea what the exam even entails. I need to work on mass destruction and more." Turning to her bookshelves, filled to the brim with grimoires, she waved her hand summoning a large grey book to her hands. "Attack and Defensive magic... this one is what I will need... I need to work on my mental powers too... I need serious improvement with channeling large amounts of mana."
She sighed, leaning back in her spinny chair, her mind moving back to where she first found out about magic and healed her body from injuries brought on by one of the many, many villains roaming about.
"What's this?" Maddie asked, looking at the book in her hands. It was small and blue and had a pentagram on it's front, but holding it hurt her arms. She was weak and tired, her body still damaged from the villain attack that nearly wiped her out her entire orphanage seven months prior. She was still tired from it, the gaseous poison the villain had released had killed two of her fellow orphans and put her in the hospital for treatment for seven months. They had yet to fully heal her, but she was stable if not very sore.
The kindly volunteer smiled at her. "It is a book of magic. You said you liked to write and read fantasy, I found this book when I was at a local thrift store. I thought you might like to read it."
Smiling, Maddison nodded happily. "I love it. Thanks, Mary."
"Not a problem, my dear... now, you rest now, enjoy your book but rest."
"I'll try." And so, as Mary left, she happily opened the book and started to get reading. "I can't read any of this... is it Latin? Apprehende terram majestatem?" She tried to read out, only to gasp when the book glowed a vibrant green, zapping up her arms with something that felt stronger than lightning. Her entire body convulsed and she wanted to scream but her body refused to do what it was told. Then she felt it, the world around her, like pure light and life was decoded, like her soul had been wrapped in led and finally was free.
Then the power faded and she collapsed onto her back.
"The hell was that?" She whispered, her hands shaking. "I... I feel better..." She sat up and looked at her hands. The pain from her bruises and the poisons damage felt... weaker, thinner... she felt more herself, more right. "Was that magic? I need to translate these spells... and ... maybe, I can heal myself... maybe I can help others. Even if I have no quirk, I ca... I can help the world."
Tears fell down her face, she embraced the small book and knew that just maybe, her path was not so cold and limited.
That had been ten months ago and Maddie was an entirely different person. Daily practice with magic, learning Latin and so on made her into a very different person. She, being a lover of video games and manga and all things fantasy, learned from those things and entered into Judo classes so not to be a glass cannon. Wizards always had like two hit points, she had no interest in getting killed cause she was too weak to fight without her magic.
Speaking of magic, she was beyond proud of what she could do. She started out with healing to allow her body to recover, which worked wonderfully, but could also move things with her mind, create barriers, cast spells of all sorts that could conjure fire, werelights, glamours and so many other things. She could disable technology, track people down, create weak illusions... Of course, she could only do the basic version of these things. She was still kind of weak and her body was not used to harnessing that much power, which is why she learned runes and potions. They did not use a ton of power.
She had used all of her pocket money, from a part time job on the weekends, to buy any book or scroll she could on magic. She was able to tell if something was actually magical by touch, it was easy to tell really as they all held mana in them. She found about five books on magic and had only just finished her first grimoire just a few weeks prior. She was ready to start on more advanced magic...
The book in her hands, the book on Defensive and Offensive magic was one she lucked out on. The rest were on potions, green magic and rituals. This was her only book on more direct powers. She found it in an old post online, someone was selling it for cheap and she swooped in and bought it hoping it would have power. It did, so she was pretty happy.
"I have three months until it is time to take my UA exam." Maddie said, pleased with herself. "I have to get a grip on offensive and defensive magic. Something beyond the basics. It took me almost a year to manage the basics, I can only hope I am able to learn the more advanced stuff on my own.., and in time for the Exam. Good thing I have already finished school online, otherwise, who knows how'd I'd find the time to do any of this."
Standing, she hurried out of her apartment, feeling the spells within protecting and sealing it from intrusion. She had training to get to and only so much time to do it.
Three months... she had three months to become strong enough to show herself worthy of being a hero in training... she could only hope she managed it.
She needed this...
Chapter end, tell me what you think in the reviews.
This was a lot of fun. Maddie is a quirkless witch, I am pretty happy with her. This is a test story.
We will learn more of her backstory later.
Love, your Ninja Overlord,
Mika.
