It was around 2am when Kuvira woke up. She opened her eyes before shutting them instantly as the bright light hurt her eyes.
After several moments, Kuvira tried to slowly open her eyes. After succesfully opening her eyes, she took in her surroundings. She was in a small white room with a bright white light and light blue curtains. She noticed the scent of bleach which she hated. It always reminded her of hospitals and she hated hospitals. Wait hospital. It was only now that Kuvira registered the sound of beeping next to her.
She turned to her right which was a bit difficult to do, seeing as her hands were in restraints.
She saw the machines next to her and looked down at her bandaged wrist which had all kinds of cords around it.
The events of the last few hours came flashing back. Her stealing the metal bracelet and bending it into to a razor to take her own life but she had failed. She heard faint snoring coming from in front of her and it was just then that she registered that someone was in her room; but who?
She took in the appearance of the figure. Shoulder length dark brown hair, tanned skin, water tribe attire. Was this a dream? Why was the avatar sitting in her hospital room?
"Ah you're awake," a bald, slender man looking to be about forty said. "How are you feeling?" He asked. "Okay I guess," Kuvira answered, her voice sounding raspy.
"That's good to hear. I'm Dr. Liao." By now Korra's eyes were open. "Do you mind the avatar being here or-" the doctor asked.
"She's fine." "Well you lost a lot of blood but we gave you a blood transfusion and it was successful, however, we're keeping you here for the next seventy two hours under suicide watch. That's it for now so I'll let you rest and check on you in the morning."
Once Dr. Liao left, green eyes met blue. "Avatar Korra. I can't say I'm not surprised to see you here."
"Why'd you do it Kuvira?" "Why do you care?" Kuvira asked, breaking eye contact. "You tried to kill yourself?! Why wouldn't I care?"
"Maybe because the last time we saw each other I tried to kill you with a giant spirit weapon."
"Yeah well that was a year ago and that doesn't mean I hate you. I told you, I understand you but what I don't understand is why you tried to kill yourself. I thought you were doing good. What changed?" "Doing good?" Kuvira snorted. "How would you know when the last time you saw me I was being arrested? Let me ask you this Avatar. Do you know what it is like to be abandoned twice? Do you know what it is like to go from having everyone loving you and worshipping you, to having no one? No one who cares?" Korra shook her head.
"Well that is what has happened to me. I've been sitting in a dark cell for an entire year without any visitors. No one came to check on me. Not Su. Not Baatar. Not that I expected them to. I did try to kill them both."
"So you tried to commit suicide because you were lonely?" Kuvira rolled her eyes. "Of course not. I'm not an idiot." "I never said you were. You're just depressed," Korra said.
"No shit. The reason I tried to-" Kuvira couldn't even say it. Saying those words sounded weak to her and the one thing she hated was being weak.
"I did what I did because I refuse to be imprisoned in my own mind for twenty-nine more years! Twenty-nine more years of mental torture. I can't do it. I won't."
"But you can't just quit living!" "Says who? It's my life. I can end it if I want to," Kuvira said, simply.
"Your life is valuable! Do you know how many people lose their lives daily without their control and you are just giving yours up?!" Korra yelled.
"I don't care. My life means nothing any more. Not to me. Not to anyone," Kuvira said softly as she stared at her scarred wrists.
Those statements broke Korra's heart.
How could Kuvira think like that? Sure she had made a lot of enemies but she was sure a lot of people would be sad if they heard that The Great Uniter died by suicide.
"That's not true. Your life means something to me." Kuvira looked at her. "Why?" "Because you're only human and every human makes mistakes. Just because you made mistakes doesn't mean you should die for them."
"I'm not sure I believe you." "Well then I'll show you." "Show me what?" Kuvira asked, looking at Korra. "That life is worth living."
"You're not going to let this go are you?" Kuvira asked. "Nope," Korra said with a small smile.
"Great so now I'm officially an Avatar pet project aren't I?" Kuvira asked with a frown. "For a lack of better terms. Yes," Korra said.
Kuvira rolled her eyes. "Can I ask you something?" Korra asked. "Sure." "How long had you been contemplating suicide?" "A while now. I can't give an exact date since I don't have a calendar but if I had to guess I would say probably about a month."
Korra frowned. "Why didn't you tell someone?" "Who? The perverted guard who tries to watch me in the shower or the one who's scared of me?"
Korra chuckled a bit. "Either. I don't like that you were alone in this. You could have died," Korra said softly with a hint of sadness.
"I don't understand how you can care so much about someone who tried to kill you." "I'm going to show you."
