Korra walked into Kuvira's hospital room, happy to see her reading the newspaper while sipping some tea. That was a much better view than watching the young woman sulking around in bed.

"Hey Kuvira." Kuvira lowered the newspaper she was reading to look at Korra. "Good morning."

"How are you doing today?" "Fine." "So I figured if I'm going to keep visiting you daily, I should probably know a bit about you."

Kuvira peered at Korra from over the newspaper. She saw the avatar with an expectant look on her face. Kuvira rolled her eyes before setting the paper down.

"Alright. What do you want to know?"

"What did you used to do for fun?" "When I was a guard or the Great Uniter?" "Both." "Well when I was a guard in Zaofu, I used to dance for fun outside of rehersals. I also spent a lot of time at the city library. I read a lot of books. I read about Zuko's tenure as Fire Lord, The 100 Year War. The last book I was able to finish was one about Avatar Kyoshi. When I became the Great Uniter, I didn't have much time for recreational activites anymore. With the little time I had, I spent with Baatar."

"You really loved him huh?" "I did. He was my best friend. He was the only person who ever truly understood me." "How'd you two meet?" "When Su took me in. He was actually the first of the Beifong children to talk to me. He didn't make me feel like a charity case and I really appreciated that. As the years went by we became increasingly close until he left for university. We grew apart because of the distance and then I became a guard and I got stationed to watch the Beifong Residence at times and he would always come talk to me and one night he asked me out and I said yes and from there our relationship grew. It was private but that's what made it all the more special. It was like we were in another world."

Korra noticed how Kuvira's eyes sparkled when she spoke about hers and Baatar's past relationship.

"Would you have really married him?" "Yes. Marry him. Have a family with him. I loved him. Before all the Great Uniter business, I would have done anything for him. I was so in love with him. He was my first love," Kuvira said sadly.

"But that doesn't matter. That's all in the past," she said.

Korra smiled. "That sounded nice." "It was," Kuvira said. "So did you have much time for fun when you became The Great Uniter?"

"No. When I became the Great Uniter it was all about uniting all of the Earth Kingdom so that no one, especially children would ever have to feel alone like I did."

"I'm sorry you felt alone. I'm sorry you feel alone now." "You keep apologizing. It's not your fault. I'm alone now because of the choices I made."

"Maybe you wouldn't have made those choices if you weren't alone in the first place."

"Maybe," Kuvira agreed. The two remained in silence for a moment until Korra broke it. "How'd you become so good at earth and metal bending? I mean Su trained you and you're even better than her."

Kuvira chuckled. Korra would do anything to keep hearing her laugh. "I was just gifted I guess."

"It has to be more than that I mean you were such a natural. You made it look so easy and the way you moved so seemlessly." Korra's fangirling made Kuvira blush.

"Yeah well I studied a lot of different combat training styles. Everyone who wants to become a guard has to learn several different fighting techniques for both offense and defense. Plus combat is just another art form like dance so I suppose you could say a lot of my dance training translated into my fighting."

"Hey I have a crazy idea." Kuvira raised an eyebrow. "What's that?" "You should teach me some metal bending techniques."

"How would I do that without any metal?" "You could just teach me some stances and oohh! Seismic sense. Do you know how to use it?"

"Yes. Su taught me." "We certainly don't need any metal for that. So what do you say?"

"Sure. It's the least I can do since you visit me everyday."

"Great!"

"Can I be honest with you?" Korra asked. "Please do." "You're not at all what I expected."

"How so?" "Well upon first meeting you I thought you were like every other villain I've fought. Out to destroy the world for their own messed up beliefs but after our conversation in the spirit world and learning about you just now I've come to the conclusion that perhaps the rest of the world judged you a little too unfairly. I mean underneath the badass exterior you're just a regular human like the rest of us. I mean a badass earth and metal bending human but a human nonetheless.

"You think I'm a badass?" "Of course. A lot of people still do." "I bet they wouldn't if they could see me now. Laid up in a hospital bed with self inflicted scars on my wrists," Kuvira chuckled humorlessly.

Korra sighed. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't get Kuvira to forget about her dreadful situation for one second. Just how broken was this woman?

"You won't ever give yourself a break will you?" Korra asked with a frown. Kuvira didn't answer; she merely started fiddling with the bandages on her wrist.

"Does it hurt?" Korra asked. Kuvira shook her head. "I suppose it's because of the pain meds they keep giving me. I wish I could have the whole bottle then I wouldn't be here."

"Don't say that," Korra said. "I'm sorry Korra. I don't mean to upset you but maybe I'm a lost cause. I seriously wouldn't blame you if you walked right out of the hospital and never came back."

"And leave you alone with your thoughts? Not a chance. I told you I was going to show you that life is worth living and I meant it. I know what it's like to suffer alone but you shouldn't have to. You've suffered alone enough. I want to help you so please let me."

"I don't-" "It's okay. We'll just take it one day at a time." "Okay. One day at a time," Kuvira repeated.
