Shorter Chapter
New Home
Back In West Virginia
The two of them had finished giving a short version on how they ended up in New Haven. Minus the whole classified different dimension and powers thing. And to say the couple was surprised would be an understatement.
"So you just left." Mary asked
They both nodded. "Pretty much." Mike said
"So you really think leaving was the best option you had?" Mary says
"Yes, it was the best choice we could think of. At least we're together." Jane says, holding his hand.
Mary looks at her husband "What do you think about this John."
"Huh well i can't say I completely understand. I do a little. They didn't want any chance of being separated. Which I'm guessing has happened before. And Mike didn't want her to get hurt mentally or otherwise. Teens can be cruel. With those fears I can see how this seemed to be the best choice to them." he paused as he looked at Mike. "Although something tells me we didn't hear all the reasons."
Mike looked back at him "There are things we didn't say but we don't exactly know you yet."
"No. That's not what I'm talking about. You're a good liar kid, I'll give you that. But no, I'm talking about what you haven't voiced to anyone. It doesn't seem like you even told Jane here. Whatever it is seems to be weighing on you kid. So what's the real or at least the bigger reason why you left?" Cooper says, looking right at Mike.
Mike looked back at Cooper, not that surprised. He could feel Jane looking at him. Mike looked at her, he could see the confusion on her face. He glanced back at Cooper letting out a sign.
"I was going to tell her. I just didn't think giving her anymore stress in her current state was a good idea." he could feel her squeeze his hand. They had promised to always talk about what they were feeling. He didn't want to scare her but he knew it needed to be said. "So yeah there's another reason why I thought it best to leave. I can't tell you all of it. It'll be heavily edited as it's not my story to tell." He looked at El again and he saw her pale and the slight fear. The realization as she came to understand what he was talking about. Mike kept looking at her and when she looked him in the eyes again after what he said settled in her, she nodded. Mike sighed and turned back to the couple.
"Jane didn't have a very good childhood. I wouldn't even call it a childhood. If anything I'd call it hell. Like i said i can't tell you everything right now but what i can say is that she was treated horribly. Moments after she was born, she was taken by a government organization. I won't say why or for what but she was used as a lab rat, she didn't even have a name. When her mom managed to track her down they stopped her. And then turned her into a vegetable, stuck in her own head to keep her from trying again. A few years ago during an...incident at the lab she managed to escape, which is when I met her.
I helped her as best I could. But after they almost got her again, she disappeared, most of us thought she was dead. She hid out for months on her own in the forest before being found by her now adopted father. After a year or so of hiding with him, she helped solve the aforementioned incident and the organization fell apart. She's been free ever since.
But the thought of anyone from what's left of that organization or any other hearing that she was pregnant and attempting to do to her and our child like they did to her and her mom. Well I couldn't let that happen, ever, so I suggested we leave. And well here we are." Mike says. He looked at El, seeing the pain and fear of not only what happened to her but what could happen to their child, in her tear streaked eyes. He took her in his lap holding her close as she sobbed through all her pain and fear.
The Coopers looked shocked at the story he just told them. They looked at each other trying to come up with something to say. Before either could say anything Jane spoke up from his lap.
"Never. They will never get our child. Never. They'll have to kill me first. And that's not before I kill as many as I can." she said in the coldest tone he ever heard from El. But he agreed. Over his dead body.
"It won't come to that. They'll have to go through me first before they ever get to you, that's a promise." El gave a nod in his chest. Mike looked back to the Coopers as the two looked to be talking quietly to themselves.
The Married couple finally looked back at them, their faces showing they had something to say. Cooper spoke first
"That's a hell of a story. But I can tell it's the truth. The wife and I talked a bit and with everything the two of you have been through, well.."
"We wanted to ask if you would like to stay with us?" Mary finished with a smile.
"Stay?" the both parroted back.
"Yes, stay. You two have been through a lot. And with Jane's pregnancy it would be good to have a permanent place to stay. We got two empty rooms up stairs you could use." Mary says
Mike and El looked at each other. The thought of settling down was a nice one. The Coopers seemed like good people and they were in the middle of nowhere. They nodded at each other as they agreed.
"We would very much like to accept your offer to stay. But I do want to work, pull my own weight around. Either on the farm or in town. If that's fine." Mike says
"That's alright Mike, you can help me out on the farm with the animals and agriculture. And I'm good friends with the owner of the electronics store in town, you said you know a thing or two. I could see if he needs some help when you're not working here." Cooper says
"Yes and I know the family that owns the diner in town. I know they have been looking for a new waitress after their daughter went to college. If Jane wants, I can ask them if the position is still open. You could work for a few months before the baby comes. Get a little more money for the baby's room."
"I'd like that." Jane says, agreeing to the idea.
Mike looks at El. " Jane, you don't have to work right now if you don't want to. I can work, make sure you and the baby are taken care of." He says
"No, I want to work. I don't mind. It'll give us more money for the baby and give me something to do. Don't worry, me and the baby will be fine." she says stubbornly.
"Huh..no point in trying to change your mind, independent and stubborn. Two of the reasons I love you. Just try to take it easy okay. To keep me from worrying." Mike says
"Okay." Jane replies, smiling at him.
"Okay. So now what?" Mike says.
"Well the two of us can take my truck and tow your car back. Get the two of you settled in." Cooper says.
"And I'm guessing you haven't had a doctor check on Jane, so i'm going to give the on call Doctor a call and have her come give her a check-up. Make sure both of them are doing okay. She's a friend." Mary says.
Mike and Jane were both kind of unsure about having a doctor near her but at the same time they wanted to make sure the baby was okay, so they agreed to it.
"Okay."
"Okay."
As Mary gave the Doctor in town a call Mike and Cooper stood by the front prepared to go get his car but Cooper stopped him before they. He reached behind him pulling out the unloaded .45 and handed it back along with the clip for it.
"You protect that girl kid." Cooper spoke seriously.
"Always."
It took Mike and Cooper almost three hours to tow the car back to the farm. They chained it to the back of Cooper's truck while he steered from inside his car. When they finally got it to the front of the house Mike noticed the extra car parked in front. He figured it was the doctor Mary had called. They walked into the house. Wondering where they were he called out.
"Jane!"
"In the living room!" was the reply he got. As they walked into the living room he noticed Jane sitting on the couch with Mary and the one who he could tell was the Doctor from her clothes was standing next to them. She is a younger woman, maybe late 30s, blonde hair, blue eyes and maybe 5'6''. She had a kind smile on her face as she looked at them.
"Hello. You must be Mike. I'm Dr Linda." as she made her way over to them.
"Yes, nice to meet you." he smiled at her
"Is everything okay with Jane and the baby?" he asked, slightly scared of the answer.
"Yes everything seems fine. The baby has a nice strong heartbeat and the mother here has a clean bill of health. She seems to be about 20 weeks along, so she is doing well." she replied. Mike let out a sigh of relief and was glad his math was pretty right on.
"If you two come to the clinic in town when you get a chance I can let you hear the baby's heartbeat if you like."
"Yes, I think we would like that very much."
"Excellent. You have taken very good care of her." Linda says as she turns back to Jane.
"Jane, keep taking your prenatals and I'll see you in two weeks okay. If anything happens or you have any questions just give me a call and I'll be happy to help." she says.
"Okay. Thank you very much for your help." Jane says with a smile. They watched as she left, saying goodbye to the Coopers on her way out.
Mike sat next to Jane taking her hand in his. They looked at each other with smiles thinking the same thing.
'We'll be okay here.'
