Chapter 5

Dean was an hour outside of Sioux Falls and knew he wasn't getting any farther unless he got gas since the gauge was on E, for empty. He was running on fumes. He saw a truck stop a few miles ahead and signaled to change lanes so he could stop. When he got to the exit, Dean slowed and drove to the top and waited for the light to change before turning left, pulling into the parking lot and to a pump.

"I'm going inside," Sam told Dean as they got out.

"I'll park over there after I fill up," Dean replied pointing to some picnic table sitting off to the side of the building. He unscrewed the cap to the gas tank and began to fill it, watching the numbers roll by on the gauge. When it finally clicked off, Dean pumped a little more before hanging the hose back up and put the cap back on the gas tank. He got in and moved the car to a parking spot. He got out and walked over to the tables, sitting on top of one as he pulled his cell out to make a call.

"Hello," a female voice answered.

"Hey Stormy," Dean sighed just hearing her voice seemed to calm him.

"It's so good to hear your voice Babe," said Storm, relief in her voice. "I was getting worried since I haven't heard from you in a few days."

"Sorry, there's been a lot going on with us."

"I don't like the sound of your voice Dean, what is it? Something has happened, hasn't it. It's not Sam…"

"Dad's been kidnapped by demons and Sammy and me are going to rescue him."

"Holy crap, is there anything I can do?" Storm asked getting up and pacing as she listened to the strain in his voice. She knew Dean was on edge and worried about John and it sounded like this was going to be extremely dangerous mission. She knew enough about demons now to be very afraid of what might happen.

"No, no, we've got to handle this alone."

"Where are you?"

"On the road to Jefferson City, Missouri. We know that's where they're holding Dad, we just have to find the place and make a plan."

"Bree and I have been reading up on demons and so far, what I've read is not good. I don't want to lose you Babe, but I know you need to do this. Please promise me that you'll be careful, more careful than you've ever been in your life," she begged. "I don't know what I'll do if something happened to either of you."

"Stormy, Stormy, it's okay. Sammy and me know what's at stake here. Neither of us thought we'd ever find anyone like you girls to have a life with and we don't want to lose that. We'll be extra careful. Please, don't worry so."

"I can't help it," Storm cried as tears ran down her face. She held back a sob and tried to be brave for Dean.

"Don't cry Baby. You need to be strong for me."

Storm sniffed and wiped her face with the back of her hand. She was better that this. She was strong, stronger than most thought she could be, and she needed to be that person for Dean right now. Storm cleared her throat before speaking again.

"I will. You don't need to be worrying about me. I'll be okay. I know you and Sam are exceptionally good at what you do. Will you promise to call me when it's over with?"

"Yes, I will. As soon as I can, I promise. I need to go. I think Sammy's finished talking to Breeze. We should get back on the road."

"Alright. We'll be okay, Bree and me. She's here with me now and will probably stay until we hear back from you guys. Just remember I love you and I need you to come back to me."

"I love you too Stormy and I will do my damnest to do that." Dean closed his cell and looked off in the distance as he pictured Storm in his mind.

Sam stepped from the building with a bag in his hand. He looked around and saw the Impala parted across the lot and saw Dean sitting on a picnic table out from it on his cell. He strolled toward the car and opened the passenger door to drop into the seat. He pulled his cell from his jacket and speed dialed a number, waiting for Breeze to answer.

"Hello," Breeze greeted him.

"Hi Bree, it's Sam," she replied.

"Sam! I'm happy you called. I'm at Storm's for the weekend, but I'm staying an extra day to support each other."

"Good. That way neither of you will be alone."

"What's going on? Sis got a call from Dean and is on the deck talking to him. I know she's upset by her body language."

"Yeah, I'm looking at him right now. We stopped for gas before heading on to Jefferson City, Missouri. Dad's been kidnapped and we're heading there to find him and save him."

"Oh, Sam! I'm so sorry. Can I do anything? I know that's a stupid question since I would be dead weight when it comes to doing what you and your brother do, but if there's anything I can do, you know I will."

"No, no…You're right. This is something you're not trained to do. So, both of you stay put and don't try to come after us," Sam explained like he was reading her mind. "It would be a distraction to us, and we can't afford that."

"Alright. But so you know, I don't like it." Breeze sighed knowing Sam was right. She didn't have the training needed to deal with the supernatural and would be in the way. "But that's not going to stop me from worrying about you and your brother."

"I know," Sam said. "I hate that you're going through this, and I know you didn't sign up for this when we started getting close. If you don't want…"

"Stop saying that right now!" Breeze insisted in a stern growl. "I signed up for this with my eyes wide open. Storm has warned me about things, and this is not going to scare me off. I know in a relationship you need to take the good with the bad. I'm not bailing on my sister, nor on you guys. If anything happens to Dean, it will kill Storm, and if anything happened to you…"

"Hey, hey, don't talk like that. We'll figure something out once we find Dad and save him."

"I have faith in you and Dean. We'll both be praying and sending all the positive energy your way that we can."

"I love you," Sam suddenly blurred out and heard silence at the other end. "Bree, are you still there?"

"Oh Sam, I…I love you too," Bree cried out. "I was going to tell you the next time we were together how I felt…But now…I want you to know how I feel, really feel. I've not felt this way toward any man before. You've captured my heart. I'm scared for you Sam," Bree whispered, not able to keep the fear from her voice.

"I know Baby and I wish you didn't have to feel this way. I'm not going to start lying to you now. What we're doing is going to be dangerous and...And any of us could be injured or die. But I'm going to do my best to not let that happen. Do you believe me?"

"Yes, I do and thank you for not trying to sugar coat it because I'm a female. I am stronger than you think and tough."

"I know that. I've seen that hard shell that you put up sometimes."

"Oh really," she giggled softly. "Well, I guess you could say that you've cracked it."

"Yeah," Sam smirked. "I'm very observant, and I like observing you."

"That's not creepy at all. Does that line ever work?"

"I've never actually used it before," Sam admitted sheepishly.

"I'm honored, you're using it on me first," she laughed trying to keep the mood light for Sam's sake. "Seriously Sam, please promise to be careful. I want to tell you face to face how I feel."

"I will do my best, but I can't promise because I don't want to break it."

"I'll take what I can get Sammy. And when I see you again, I'm going to cherish every minute we're together."

"I like the sound of that," Sam nodded and smiled to himself as he pictured Breeze lying in bed, cuddled up to his side, and smiling up at him.

"I'm staying here with Sis until we hear from you again. I think we need to support each other."

"That sounds good. It looks like Dean is finished talking to Storm. He'll be wanting to get back on the road. I love you so much, Bree."

"I love you too Sammy. You guys keep each other safe."

"I'll call when it's all over."

"You better, I'm holding you to it."

"Bye Bree." Sam hung up and looked out the windshield as Dean headed his way. He turned in the seat and closed the door as Dean dropped into the driver's seat.

"You ready Sammy?"

"Yeah."

Dean started the Impala, pulled from the parking lot, and picked up the highway once again for Jefferson City. The brothers remained quiet during the drive, both lost in thought of what lay ahead. It was nearly an eight-hour drive and they pulled into the city limits of Jefferson City later that afternoon. Dean had only stopped for gas and restroom breaks along the way.

"Any idea where we start?" Sam asked as they walked down the sidewalk.

"The river. Meg said he was near the river."

"And the real Meg said sunshine, whatever that means."

They turned the corner and Dean pulled them up short when he saw an apartment building on the corner.

"I think I know what she meant," Dean noted pointing toward the sign that said, 'Sunshine Apartment Building'."

"Hide in plain sight," Sam commented. "Any one of the occupants could be a demon and we have no idea what apartment they might have Dad in."

"We need to get everyone out of there."

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"Pull the fire alarm."

"I'll do it, you watch for the fire department." Sam moved from the side of the building and headed for the front doors of the apartment building. He walked in and looked around dodging people coming out before going to the alarm and pulling it, sending a loud, shrill, wail throughout the building. Sam ducked his head and tried to look inconspicuous as he made his way back outside, skirting the crowd that was beginning to form.

Fire trucks, with sirens blaring pulled up to the apartment building, stopping and blocking the street. Firefighters poured from the vehicles as the milling residents of the apartment building wandered around outside. They tried to move everyone out of the way so they could check things out. Dean approached a firefighter and asked what was going on to distract him so Sam could steal some gear for them.

The brothers quickly put on the gear and headed into the building to check the apartments for the demons and hopefully find their father. On the second floor one apartment set off Sam's EMF meter and they knew they had found the right place.

"Fire department!" Dean yelled banging on the door. "We have a gas leak and need to check your apartment."

"We're good," a male voice called back.

Dean and Sam stepped back and rammed the door knocking the two standing behind it out. They threw them in the closet and stripped out of the gear before going in search of their father. They started opening doors until they found John tied to a bed, unconscious, but alive.

They got him out of the room and down the fire escape, only to be attacked by several demons, one being Meg's brother, Tom. He had Sam on the ground beating him until Dean shot him with the Colt, killing him. They got their father to the Impala and drove out of town and didn't stop until they got to the cabin John had been using.

They talked and tried to regroup, hoping the demons couldn't track them. Dean told John about using a bullet to save Sam and he praised him for it. John tried to get Dean to give him the Colt, but Dean realized that his father would tear him a new one for wasting a bullet. He refused to give him the Colt and then realized that the demon they had been hunting was possessing their father.

Demon John, threw the brothers against the walls and began to torture Dean, ripping long gashes on his chest. After Dean begged his father to help him, John got control for a moment allowing Sam to break loose and grab the Colt. He shot his father in the leg, weakening the demon enough for John to break free of the demon's hold. He begged Sam to shot him with the Colt to kill the demon, but it would kill John too. Dean begged Sam not to do it and Sam hesitated too long, letting the yellow eyed demon escape.

Sam saw how badly Dean was injured and got him in back of the Impala and his Dad in the passenger seat. He drove frantically for the highway and toward the hospital that wasn't that far away.

"Hold on," Sam was telling them. "Dean, can you hear me? Hold on, we're not far from help."

Before he could say anything else a semi came out of nowhere and rammed the side of the Impala, sending it cantering across the road, totaling it. Everyone inside was thrown around from the impact and injured worse than before.

When the demon possessed driver tried to get the Colt, Sam threatened to shoot him, and he left the body. Emergency crews were called, and they were airlifted to the hospital. Sam was the only one conscious and was crying out trying to find out about his father and brother. He didn't know if they were alive or dead and the panic and fear was building inside him, taking his breath away. Sam lost consciousness on the way to the hospital, not able to learn his family's fate.
