In hindsight Subaru probably should have saw this coming.
When Subaru go to know more about the woman he fell in love with he learned that she was just shy of over 120 years old. At first he just assumed it was because she was frozen solid in ice for those first hundred years.
As they both got older, got in a relationship, Emilia getting elected queen, got married, had kids, it dawned on him about 15 years after all of that, that his appearance was changing but Emilia was barely looking older as the day he met her. Her body got more mature and a few wrinkles on the face but she looked as pristine as ever.
Subaru began to grow nervous. He now assumed because of her elven heritage that she aged much slower than he did and he'll die first. He was fine with dying first but it's the fact that Emilia will live, long, long, past than he will.
And now that she's queen she'll get the best medical care possible. He's king as well but that is more of a title if anything else really.
A Subaru gets older and starts to gray he notices Emilia looking more distressed over time as she notices him aging. He hates seeing her get sad about him getting old and tries his best to cheer her up.
"Emilia have I ever told you, your as beautiful as the day I met you?"
She giggled at his sweet talk like always. "Only every day darling." She looked kind of sad after she finished her sentence. Subaru knew why, he could read his wife like a book.
"Don't be sad Emilia."
The Half-Elf sighed. "I know I shouldn't Subaru but..." She hugs him gently. "I'm just scared you know? The day I'll lose you."
Subaru smiles and hugs her back tightly. "That won't happen for a while Emilia. I'm right here and by your side, that's all that matters right now."
Subaru was only about 52 years old at the time.
He still remembers telling her that. He still remembers when him and his precious wife finally had that conversation that was a long time coming.
When he was going to die. permanently this time in his case since nobody knows about "Return By Death" still.
He remembers holding her gently as Emilia let her real feelings on the subject out by sobbing in to his shoulder about how she never wants to lose him. How she wouldn't know what to do without him by her side. How he'll never see his children grow old as well. How her bedside will be empty at night and in the morning.
Subaru could only smile whisper how everything was going to be okay. He told her how he doesn't regret anything because he couldn't ask for anything else other than this. A loving family that cares so much about him.
Anything else could never be better than this in his mind.
Subaru was only 65 when they had that talk.
"You shouldn't be doing such thing when you're this old, in fact."
Subaru would smile every time she's pestering him like this. "What Beako? Just because I'm an old man doesn't mean I can't keep my body in tip top shape you know? What would the wife say if I let myself get out of shape?" He was doing his trademark radio calisthenics on the front lawn of the Palace.
He always found it hilarious that his little exercises caught on worldwide as a sort of workout routine for the common man.
His sweet little great spirit Beatrice, adorable as ever, was covering her little frets for him by acting as tsundere as she always does.
"As Betty said you're old and brittle and might break something stretching like that all over the place."
"I'm old? Aren't you over, what? Like 500 years old at this point! Your just an angry grandma!"
"Just because your old and the king doesn't mean that Betty won't blast you across this lawn, in fact!"
"Oh Beako always so feisty!" Subaru stops his exercises and pats her head gently. "Doesn't matter how old you are Beako you will always be my adorable little spirit and nothing will ever change that."
Beatrice closed her eyes trying to hide her sadness. She was immortal essentially as a great spirit. Subaru is her most precious person, she'll do anything for him, she loves him with all of her heart and the day is coming closer when he will no longer walk this world with her.
She tries her best to push those thoughts away to not make herself depressed.
"Beako I know what your thinking about, stop being sad."
"Betty can't, in fact! Betty keeps thinking about how she's going to lose you one day and there's nothing she can do about it, I suppose!"
"Oh Beatrice." He got on his knees and held the little girl gently in his arms. "Nothing can stop me from passing on in the future. You should cherish the moments you have with me while I'm still here. You can never forget anything right? So even when I pass on I'm still with you forever."
"Betty knows that. She just doesn't want you to go..." she muttered weakly.
"I wish for the same thing but everyone has to go eventually. But for now just cherish the fact I'm right here." His kissed the crying girl's forehead and patted her. The day will come when he'll eventually pass away and he knows he's only got a couple years left.
"When I pass on Beatrice stay with Emilia and my family, sign a new contract with them. I never want you to be alone again and that's I promise I'll keep beyond death."
"Betty will, in fact." She hugged him as tightly as her little arms could. "She promises you that."
Subaru was 76 years old when he told Beatrice that eventually he will pass away.
"I don't know this ceiling."
Subaru felt tired, really tired this time. In fact he doesn't remember how he got in to this bed. He keeps dozing in out of consciousness.
"Subaru are you awake?" The sweet voice of silver bells called out to him.
"Hey Emilia, what's going on...?" He sees the tear stains that were going down her cheeks as she sat and waited by his bedside for him to wake up.
"Darling, you collapsed while you were walking in the hall of the palace. One of the maids heard you and called for help immediately."
"I see, I see. Tell her that she eternally has my thanks for that. I'm really tired Emilia." He feels her hand grasp his tightly after he said that.
Subaru knew that today was that day. If he falls asleep now he knows he won't wake up ever again. Something about that was really comforting to him.
When he began his new life in this world and suffered the way he did in all directions he feared death for what would happen next. That the checkpoint would be messed, someone important to him died, or something much worse but this time it was different. Subaru knows he won't go back he will go to sleep and he'll be on the other side with everyone else hopefully.
Everybody passed away before he got close to kicking the bucket surprisingly. Rem, Ram, Otto, Garfiel, Frederica, Petra, Roswaal, Julius, Anastasia, Felix, Crusch, Wilhelm, Priscilla, Al, Felt, and Hell even Reinhardt passed away before he did as unstoppable as he was. The new title of sword saint still being held by his and Felt's child.
It will be nice to see them all again when this was over.
His parents as well God did he miss them. He couldn't wait to tell them everything.
Subaru feels himself slipping as he reminisces his journey in this world. Emilia and Beatrice are by his bedside now holding each of his hands. It reminded him so much of the twins.
"Emilia..."
"Yes Subaru?"
"Have I ever told you your as beautiful as the day I met you...?"
The tears are falling like waterfalls down the Half-elf's face. "Only e-everyday darling." She was trying her best to keep her composure.
"Beako..."
"Yes, I suppose?"
"Don't cry, don't be sad." He can hear her small sniffs as she tries to keep herself from crying. Beatrice can literally feel his life force fading a she held on to his palm.
"Emilia..."
"Subaru..."
"I love you..." Subaru use the last bit of strength to grasp her and Beatrice's hand tightly as he could and gave them both a loving smile.
Yeah this was it, and it couldn't be better in his opinion.
Subaru closed his eyes and finally went to rest. Forever.
Emilia let the tears out and kissed her dear husband on the forehead telling him goodbye.
Subaru Natsuki would pass away after a long fulfilling life at the age of 83 years old.
Just a small drabble that I made myself sad with*
