It was the first Heroics class of second year and All Might wanted to show the class how far they had come. Teams were once again randomized and the first round was Izuku and Momo vs Bakugo and Toru. The 'bomb' was much smaller this time, only half a meter in diameter, so hiding it was simpler. Or teams could take advantage of their mobility.
"I don't know if being on defense is a good thing." Izuku ponders as he enters the building with Momo.
"Depending on what you get we could be stuck on this floor." Momo says.
"Well, wish us luck." Izuku says as he raises his hands in the air and then sighs. "There are less useful tanks out there I guess."
"Looks good to me, Ochako will want to spend time with it later." Momo says.
"Sure, but it has no real anti-infantry defense. No one in this class is dumb enough to stand in front of a hull machine gun and we can't shoot this cannon at anyone, not even the relatively explosive resistant Bakugo." Izuku says sadly.
"What if we hide it in a corner? And sit inside it. If we stall long enough it's not like Bakugo and blow through this armor anytime soon. " Momo asks.
"That sounds like a plan." Izuku agrees, and proceeds to slowly back the tank into an alcove.
With some effort the two manage to close up the area with a fake wall and then hide in the tank with the bomb.
Meanwhile, outside the building, Bakugo is telling his teammate what he is going to do.
"I'm going in hot and blasting those losers. You just find the bomb and stay out of the way. And no winning before I'm satisfied!" Bakugo shouts into Toru's ear.
"Yeah , yeah." Toru says, bored with Bakugos attitude like most of the class.
As All Might calls the start Bakugo rushes into the building using explosions to propel himself and to preemptively blow up any trap that may be in his path. Unfortunately for Bakugo, Izuku and Momo were very experienced in cleaning up after indoor tank use at this point and he didn't find their hiding spot. He assumed Izuku had summoned something small and crap and was hiding on the top floor.
Toru on the other hand, was still outside, studying the plans and avoiding the inevitable friendly fire if she got in explosion brain's way. Once it sounded like Bakugo had left the first floor she strolls in, and looks around. Her extra time with the plans and good eye for floor defects, one does not walk barefoot into danger without learning to study the ground, means she soon notices the filled but still drying and off color tracks of a large tank. Curious, she follows the tracks to a wall, which was quite solid. Toru pushes against the wall, but it holds easily.
"Dynamight, I think I found them." she says over the communicator but no response. She sighs, knowing he either didn't bother wearing them, or his own explosions were overpowering her voice. 'When is he going to learn to turn up the volume on these things.' Toru curses internally before walking back to her shoes then running towards the explosions.
It took more than half of the time for Toru to catch up to Bakugo and then convince him to follow her. But with three minutes left on the clock Bakugo blows the fake wall to pieces and finds himself looking down the largest barrel he had ever seen. He instinctively dodges, saving himself from the hail of machine gun fire that erupted from a small port next to the main cannon.
Bakugo quickly notices the limited reach of the machine gun and laughs, "You not going to hit me with that nerd!"
Izuku doesn't bother to respond, merely sits back down on the comfy cushions Momo had created and relaxes. He knew the tank could never out turn a person in close quarters, so why bother.
Bakugo quickly begins blasting the tank. When that proves as useless as ever he takes a few steps back and prepares his ultimate attack, "AP shot!" he shouts sending a concentrated stream of explosive energy at the tank.
Which does nothing, "You call that AP? More like NP!" Izuku taunts, this tank had a lot of armor and no explosion was going to take it down.
This infuriated Bakugo, who began circling the tank and firing AP shots at what he thought were weak points.
"Will explosions ever get us?" Momo asks curiously.
"Not likely, if there is anything consistent with my quirk it is its desire to protect me. And as such this has appeared in my tanks since the first time Bakugo hit me with his quirk." Izuku says, sliding his hand on the odd fabric like material Momo had noticed on the inside of the tanks he created.
"What is that?" Momo asks.
"Spall liner, it protects against any pieces of metal that break off due to pressure from outside or other deformation. Very useful since many older tanks have very hard and brittle steels compared to modern soft steel with ceramic armor." Izuku explains.
"Interesting, so it's like a modern armor vest, but inside the tank?" Momo asks.
"In a way, yes." Izuku says. "Not particularly historical, but definitely necessary."
At this point Bakugo's patience had run out and he levels his gauntlet at the side of Izuku's tank, causing Toru to stop inching away and begin sprinting for the exit.
With an earth shattering kaboom the entire building shakes and parts begin falling down as the mighty tank rolls onto its side. Izuku and Momo react well, landing on excess pillows and each other. Both were rather shocked by this excess of force.
"I thought he had learned his lesson on excessive force by now." Izuku groans as he lifts himself up, earning him a rather uncharacteristic squeak from Momo. It turns out his hand was in a Not safe for Eri position.
With Bakugo's use of excessive force the match was automatically forfeited by the heroes, not that it mattered as only fifteen seconds were left on the clock. Once the building was deemed safe enough to enter by Cementos, who was All Mights teaching assistant for this class, Ochako was sent in to rescue the villain team from the overturned tank. Once she looked inside through one of the hatches she simply uses her quirk to put the tank on its tracks before radioing All Might that they needed the nurse and driving the tank away.
Fortunately All Might forgot to check with the nurse later or all three of the hero students would have been in trouble.
"I'm sure Aizawa will have plenty of criticism on that fight." All Might begins, "Bakugo, you are banned from all fights against other students until you can figure out why I am banning you. Hagakure, you did as well as you could considering the situation, your detective work is impressive. Asui, tell Yaoyorozu and Midoriya they did well, but some more offensive effort would be appreciated."
"By the way, what tank was that?" Kaminari asks, earning him a few looks of shock as almost everyone in the class knew tanks quite well by this point.
"A SturmTiger, or Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38 cm RW 61 if you want the German name." Tsu answers. "A bit of a dumb idea honestly, but interesting for it's large rocket gun."
The class just moved on from that point, knowing they could ask more questions later.
"Eri, what are you putting into your CV 33?" Momo asks worriedly as she enters her garage on a rather soggy Friday night.
"An engine." Eri responds.
"Only one engine right?" Momo asks
"Yes, only one." Eri says.
"Which one?" Momo asks.
"A Chrysler Multibank." Eri responds with flagging confidence.
"Never heard of it, but Chrysler engines are probably fine. Go on." Momo responds before walking out of the garage, leaving a large thermos of warm tea behind.
The next day at the drag strip.
"Eri's next and she's up against an old Volvo." Tsu says, dragging the party out of its conversations.
"Hold on." Izuku says as Eri rolls into sight. "What engine did you say she put in there?"
"I didn't say, but she said she put only one, a Chrysler multibank." Momo responds.
"Oh no." Izuku and Ochako say simultaneously.
"What?" Momo asks.
"That's five inline 6s bolted onto one drive shaft." Izuku answers.
"Oh." Momo responds. "Is it still slow?"
"Originally yes. But knowing Eri, she probably tuned it and added at least one cheap turbo per engine." Ochako says.
"What's the chance it blows something during this race?" Tsu asks.
"Nearly 100%." Izuku responds.
"..."
As the race starts, red fire escapes the many extra exhausts on Eri's tank as it flies forward.
"That must be over 1000 kW (~1400hp)" Momo calculates as Eri leaves the surprisingly fast brick behind.
Then, Eri's exhaust goes blue and she goes even faster.
"Nitrous! I thought we locked that away!" Ochako screams, leaping out of her seat and charging after their adopted child.
And then a cylinder explodes, followed by a few others and one of the blocks. Eri, unable to see, drifts off the track into the mud. Fortunately with all the overnight rain, nothing else catches fire and Eri is able to jump out and attempt to extinguish the fire before Ochako arrives and pulls her away. Just in time of course as the inferno causes the pressure containers to explode, followed by the fuel tanks.
It takes a combined effort of all the heroes on sight and the track fire team over a quarter of an hour to get the fire under control. Eri spends the entire time on a small stool Momo created and tied her too.
She was grounded for the rest of her life and had to get Izuku's approval to make any new tank changes until she was thirty.
AN: If I killed off Eri, even as an adult, would I gain internet shame for doing so onscreen for what could be the first time? I haven't read anything that has done so other than off screen but then again I don't read anything dark as a rule. Writers tend to go over the top with edgyness to the point that it just feels dark for the sake of it.
Anyway, I was just going to write a few shorts here but the other one I had in mind just didn't work. I was going to write about that one episode in the anime where they show a heroics class where All Might pretends to be a villain and then plays dead in character causing them to not consider that and fail, which was stupid. But I feel having Izuku run over All MIght with a tank, while sensible, is a bit too out of character.
So, reviews... I used an Abrams in ch 17 To the beach won't use it again as explained in chapter. Put the chapters in order? That sounds like work. Half tracks are interesting, I've done actual trucks before so it's not out of reach, just need inspiration. The Germans never finish developing anything, enough time would be until the world itself ends with their endless 'improvements' The Tiger is what it is, I don't see Germany doing better under those political conditions even with more time.
And no, this coming out doesn't mean more updates soon. I just had ideas for it that came out.
P.S. For some reason google's spelling and grammar seem to be getting worse. And I'm not good enough to find everything myself... RIP might have to find a different program to write with, after over a decade it's kind of annoying that and no auto-saves for most other programs...
