The Last Dance

"Dance with me, My Lady, be my dance partner on the dance floor, on the battlefield and in life. Say you'll never leave me. Say… you love me! Say those three words and I will never speak of this again. For I know, you feel the same. I can see it in your eyes, in your smile, in your blush. In the way you tremble when I hold you close, the gasps that escape your lips, when you're trying to stay calm. Forget everything, Hawk Moth, the past and the future. Just think of now and love me, the way I know you do. This is what I beg of you." Chat held out his hand to Ladybug, who was in tears at his declaration of love and devotion.

"I can do one thing for you, My Chat. I can offer you this dance, but it will be the last dance for me. For I cannot accept your proposal, I cannot disregard all that we have and all that we are. The past, present and future are ours to protect. It is more precious, and more important than either of us. Or…" She fought back a sob that was struggling to be released. "Our love. For yes, Chat, I love you, as you love me. But we can never be. For our love burns brighter than the sun, and burns all that it touches, including us. I can offer you this one night, and nothing more. Do you accept my proposal?"

Chat Noir's eyes filled with tears. This was the answer he was expecting. But he couldn't bring himself to not ask her. On this most magical night, in this magical place. He hoped, no, he prayed for a miracle. That maybe, just maybe, for once, she'd love him as much as he loved her. It was selfish of him to tell her to forget Paris and everyone there. They were heroes. It was their duty, their life, to protect and serve those there. But he'll never understand why they have to give up their own personal love story for this to happen. Why they can't be in love and protect the world from evil. He realises now why heroes in his comic books were never married. One cannot be a hero and be in love. Those two things just cannot be. But, if his lady is to give him one night, then he will take.

He smiled a heartbroken, tear filled smile as she took his hand. He pulled her gently into his arms and held her close. A closeness he knows he will never experience again, for as she said, they cannot be. No matter how much they wish for it to be.

As if on cue, unearthly music played throughout the ruined church they were in for their "date". He had been so happy and excited when she had agreed to go out with him. Not knowing, it'd be the one and only time.

He held her close as he held her hand and slowly led her around the altar. He had hoped to one day bring her to an altar, in a white wedding dress, and promise to love her for all eternity and then some. But now he sees that all his hopes and dreams were but silly childish fantasies. Ones that will never come true, no matter how much he hoped and prayed. He knew that'd he'd never love again. If he can't have her, then he will have no one. He'd rather die alone, then love another like he loves her. Not that it is possible, for she is his soul mate. Matched in every way possible. There is no one on Earth like her, and no one he wants more than her. No, he will never walk to an altar with a woman that was not his Ladybug.

He stared into her eyes as they danced around the world, a glossy, blurry image, all but her eyes. Her beautiful blue eyes. Just as glossy and filled as his own. For her heart to was breaking like his. Knowing their love will never come to light. They will never get to feel the way the other feels beneath them, the way they taste. The way they feel as they are slowly falling asleep in each other arms, after a long night of pleasing each other. They will never experience mornings together, or breakfast. No holiday traditions, Christmas treasures, or special dates. He will never know how her skin feels under his fingers, for the wall between them was strong and thick.

Destined to love someone you can never have is the worst feeling in the world. Nothing compares, nothing. When your heart yearns and aches, burns for the one who holds half of your soul. Knowing you will never be whole again. For without them, you are only half a person, and can never truly feel or live. But, without that other half, one does not wish to love or live. The pain is just too great.

He took her hand and spun her around before bringing her close to him. Knowing they can never have this moment again, he wanted to make it memorable. Placing a hand behind her head, he slowly lowered himself down to her. As she slowly lifted herself up onto her tiptoes, their lips met in a wash of salty tears and restricted sobs. Not how he pictured his first kiss with his Bugaboo, but it was magical none the less.

Not wanting their only moment to end, he pulled her closer, as she wrapped her arms around his neck and lifted herself up as high as she could manage. Both deepening the kiss beyond the bounds they had erected when they first fell in love. That day in front of the Eiffel Tower, teaming up to save Paris from evil. For he knows that his love at first sight was for her as well. A love so powerful and strong it cemented them together for all eternity. Yet, kept them apart until the end of time.

Somewhere off in the distance, a clock chimed 12, and Ladybug slowly pulled away, not wanting to end the moment. Arms still around his neck, she looked up at him, her eyes mirroring his. Filled with longing, heartache, and heartbreak. Whoever said it was better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all. Must never have loved. For he'd give anything to rewind time and force his younger self to not fall in love with her. Force him to stay away. But he knew it was no use. He loved her from the moment she fell from the sky and tangled him up in her web. His body, his heart, his soul.

"Goodbye…" She whispered as she slowly pulled away. Stepping just out of arm's reach, she wiped away the tears that refused to stop falling before she turned and disappeared into the shadows of the night. Taking his heart with her.

That is how the greatest love story started and ended all at once. Great love can only live so long as allowed. And for these two, it can never be. A hero's duty is to their city, their people, and never to each other.

To love and lost, is better to have never loved at all. Is only true, if you lose the person you loved. Not when you have to see them every day, and know you can never have them.

Paris greatest couple began and ended on the same night, leaving behind two soul shattered heroes in its wake.
