Chapter Seven
Maya groaned as her head pounded. It felt like elephants had stomped all over her head while dancing to the tango with steel toed shoes on. She slowly sat up and rubbed her head.
"Maya, your awake" Susan called out.
Maya glanced at her in confusion. "What time is it?"
"It's almost 9:30. The sun's gone down. What's wrong?" Susan said.
Maya opened her eyes and glanced around. "Massive headache. Lights in here are not helping."
Susan was sitting by her and the others were all crowded around a metal barrel that had a fire going on inside it. She slowly stood up and struggled to stay standing. Susan grabbed her arm till the older girl was able to get her balance. Maya smiled and nodded at the girl.
Matthew glanced up and saw the two girls. "Maya, your awake."
Maya stared at the boy. His face was pale, and he looked shaken.
Maya nodded her head. "Yeah, I'm ok. I have a massive headache and my eyes are killing me. What happened? I can't remember anything."
Matthew and Kyle glanced at each other in shock. Matthew slowly rubbed the back of his head. "Well…. you see. The thing is you drank some wine we found, and it made you pass out."
Maya glanced between the two. "And?"
Kyle shrugged. "That's it."
Tara laughed meanly. "Just tell her the truth. Kyle found a wine bottle filled with blood and who knows what else. He convinced you to drink it and Matthew was a chicken. He told you it was safe even though he knew it was blood and no one else tried it. Just you. You passed out after you drank it. We were waiting to see if you woke up or if you died. If you had died, we would have had to find a place to dump your body."
Matthew glared at the girl.
Maya snarled. "YOU CONVINCED ME TO DRINK BLOOD?" She snarled at Kyle.
She turned quickly to face Matthew. "AND YOU WENT ALONG WITH IT?"
Kyle took a gulp and stepped back from the angry girl. "Come on Maya. It's not that bad."
Maya turned and swung her hand so hard she knocked Kyle down. "YOU TWO ARE MONSTERS AND ONE DAY YOU WILL GET WHAT'S COMING TO YOU!"
Maya turned to Susan. "Get your stuff. We are going now."
Tara snickered from where she was sitting. It was worth it to set the girl on the boys. She slowly stood up and walked over to the girl. "Do you like my new jacket?"
Maya turned toward the girl and stared. She stared at the leather jacket with the patches. She had seen that jacket from somewhere, but she could not remember where she had seen it. Her head was pounding and felt like it was filled with cotton. It was hard to think properly.
Tara took Maya's staring as jealously. "It's very vintage. I had to remove some of the patches and put some other patches on. Some of them were so vulgar."
Maya groaned and rubbed her head. It was so loud in here. She wiped the sweat off her forehead and turned to glance at Susan.
"Hurry up. I need some air. It's stuffy in here."
Susan grabbed her bag and went to stand by Maya. Matthew frowned. "Where are you two going?"
Susan lifted her chin and said, "I'm going home."
Kyle frowned. "What? Why would you do that? This is your home now."
Susan shook her head. "I want to go home."
Kyle started to say something, but Maya stopped him. "It's her decision. Not yours. Let it go Kyle."
Matthew shook his head at the look of fury on Kyle's face. He stepped up and ruffled Susan's hair. "Good luck kid. I hope it works out for you."
Tara and the others besides Kyle said goodbye. As Susan walked out the door Maya glanced back to see Kyle glaring at the two girls. Kyle had a bad attitude when things didn't go his way. Maya had a feeling she was going to be in a fight when she got back to the hideout.
Susan grabbed Maya's hand as they walked through the different alleyways to get to the police station. "Maya, are you ok?"
Maya forced a smile on her face. "Yeah. I will be fine. Are you excited to go home?"
Susan smiled. "A little bit. The babies were not born yet. I'm kind of nervous to see mom though."
Maya smiled kindly at the kid. "Everything will be fine."
Maya and Susan stopped in an alley way facing the police station.
Maya leaned down and fixed Susan's shirt. "Do you remember what you're supposed to say?"
Susan nodded her head looking down at the ground. Maya reached out and lifted the girl's head until she was looking Maya in the eyes. "Do you remember what you're not supposed to say?"
Susan frowned and nodded again. "Don't tell them where we stayed or who was in the group."
Maya nodded her head. She gave Susan a hug and whispered in her ear. "Don't look back. No matter what you feel. Don't look back."
Maya pulled away and ran her hand down the girl's face for a moment before turning Susan toward the police station and giving her a shove forward. Susan took three steps and stopped. Maya frowned. "Don't look back kid."
Susan gulped but continued walking across the street and into the police station. Maya really hoped to never see Susan here ever again. Hopefully the police would have her on a bus home first thing tomorrow.
Maya turned and started walking back toward the boardwalk. Pain suddenly exploded everywhere. It felt like every cell in her body was exploding and shrinking at the same time. Her bones throbbed and her head started pounding even worse than before.
Maya fell to the ground and curled up into a ball. This pain was worse than anything she could imagine. Death would have been preferable. She was in so much pain she didn't hear the footsteps coming toward her.
"Well, what do I have here? A damsel in destress. What is wrong? Not feeling so good. Do not worry. I'll take good care of you just like you will take good care of me."
Maya felt the man kneel down and grab her arm pulling it over his shoulder. He shifted her to where her face was pressed into his neck as he started to carry her further in the dark. Maya sniffed and smelt the most heavenly smell ever. Maya's throat was burning, and she licked her lips at the smell. The man stumbled and Maya's face slammed into his neck. The back of her earing scratched the man on the neck making him bleed.
As the man cursed Maya lost control. She felt her face shift and, before the man realized what was going on, Maya bit straight onto his neck right at the vein. The man yelled out as he felt the girl bite him and tried to push her away. Maya was too lost in the taste of the blood to realize what she was doing or that her hands had changed into claws. The girl grabbed his arms and held tight. The struggle led to the man falling backward with Maya holding on tightly and falling with him.
"Please…. Stop…. I… I'm…. begging… you…" The man begged.
Maya was too lost in feeding to hear his pleas or to realize that she was being watched by four people above her.
The blood eventually slowed down, and Maya let go of the man. She glanced down at what used to be a 30-year-old man. He now looked like a shriveled-up mummy.
Maya's eyes suddenly widened as the situation suddenly hit her. She had just killed a man. She had just killed a man by drinking his blood. Her shirt and jeans had drops of blood on it. What had she done and what would she do now?
Whoosh
Maya jerked around to stare at four people who stood behind her. Maya's eyes widened in shock when she recognized who was behind her. They were the last people she expected to see tonight.
