Chapter 1 The last sibling
Edward POV
It was the summer of 1950. Emmett and I were coming home from a hunting trip. We had been gone a couple of days and were very anxious to see our family. Emmett was mostly excited to see Rosalie, which was understandable since they were in love. They've been together for 15 years now, and just like Carlisle and Esme, their love for each other wasn't fading in the slightest. That was a good thing since both couples had vowed to stay together for eternity. I was happy for them all, truly, but all of the eye gasing, hand holding and lovey dovey cooes to each other I could do without. Not to mention all the thoughts about sex and other ways to physically love each other, got rather cringey at times. Despite what everyone thought I wasn't bitter. Did I wish to have someone like that for myself? Maybe. But love had never been at the forefront of my mind so I suppose that made it a bit easier to endure.
I was looking forward to seeing all of my family, especially Carlisle and Esme. My parternel father and mother were always a joy to be around and I enjoyed their company very much.
As we got closer to the house I became a little puzzled. Instead of there being three voices (voiced thoughts) in the house, there were now five. Two of them were entirely unknown to me. Did we have visitors? Emmett didn't notice anything until we were almost upon the house and he could hear the actual voices. He looked at me with a quizzical expression, asking in his thoughts if I knew anything he didn't. I shook my head no and proceeded to open the door. As we walked inside Emmett called out "We're back." to let everyone in the house know that for better or for worse more people just entered the house. It was both a comment to Rosalie that he was near, as well as a warning should any of the unknown voices not be friendly.
When we entered the living room my eyes shot to the two strangers. Both mine and Emmetts eyes locked on to the male vampire. Covered in scars, stoic face and the way he held himself, told us that he had seen more than a few battles. Emmett immediately tensed and crouched slightly, ready to pounce. I was about to open my mouth to say something when a small, pixie-like girl ran at me and hugged me around the middle. I froze. Within a fraction of a second I scanned the thoughts of the girl to see if she was hostile. She wasn't. She was happy, overjoyed in fact. I quickly registered that Emmett was about to attack so I held up a hand to stop him. He did, though rather reluctantly, and asked in his thoughts what was going on. I didn't answer him. I was completely engrossed in the thoughts of the girl with her arms around my waist. Her thoughts rang clear in my head. "Oh, Edward. At last my brother. We're finally together."
Her name was Alice. She showed me all of her memories from the day she awoke in a meadow completely alone, to her seeing and finding Jasper, the warrior standing near the others (his posture was a bit stiff now in anticipation), to them coming here together a couple of days ago, to now, and then all the futures she had seen were she and I were the closest of siblings, smiling, laughing and being completely confident of the other. I understood then. She could see the future and had seen all of this happening. Her joy and happiness was due to her already feeling the bond of kinship towards me and the others. And strangely enough, I felt it already as well. Feeling like I already knew her.
Alice pulled back a little and looked up at me with a huge grin on her face, anticipating the next moment she had already seen. At some point I had folded my arms around her shoulders and started smiling myself. Without taking my eyes off my new sister I spoke to Emmet.
"This is Alice, Emmett. She's part of our family." I looked to the man behind her. "And that's Jasper. You're gonna love him."
As I looked at my new brother I saw, heard and felt him relax at my statement. Alice had obviously told him how this would go, but he was still worried for her safety. Hearing from me that I had already accepted the both of them as family, he could see that there was no need for his worries as Alice's prediction had just come true.
The next few hours were spent getting to know our new family members, mostly for Emmetts sake, as I already felt that I knew at least Alice pretty well.
"I'm so happy." Alice said. "I've been waiting for this day for so long." We all smiled at her. "Now all we need is Bella and our family will be complete." She said as she stood up and went to a window to let some fresh air into the room. I felt the confusion from my family and myself.
"Who's Bella?" Asked Esme a little perplexed, looking around at everyone.
In Alice's mind I saw the face of a beautiful young brunette. A vampire. Her eyes were bright and golden amber. The vision was short and only showed the girl looking at us from afar in what looked like a cafeteria. Then Alice's internal voice saying "Bella, my sister. The day has finally come."
Alice turned back around to face Esme. "She is the last member of our family. At least that I have seen. I can't tell exactly when or where we will meet her, but I do know that it won't be for many years to come." She looked at me then. "Did you notice the clothes of the people in the room?"
I thought about what I had just seen, and tried not to focus on that beautiful face or those eyes that seemed to hold so many secrets. "Yes." I said after a time. "It seems very different from the current style now. Very different indeed." My brows furrowed a bit. "It would seem that some of the modern styles in the future are going to border on indecency."
"How do you mean?" Rosalie asked. It was Alice who answered. "It would seem that over the next couple of decades, womens fashion will be targeted towards showing as much skin and curves as possible, without actually being naked."
Both Rosalie and Esme were outraged at this statement. It took quite a bit of talking to calm them both down. Only after Alice told them that she was planning to study fashion and maybe design all of our wardrobes to make sure that we were all decently dressed, did they relax.
Carlisle found me outside a couple of hours later, staring off into the sun as it slowly rose from the horizon. "Edward? Are you alright?" He said out loud. His internal voice was worried. "I wonder what's troubling him. Did something happen on their trip?"
I didn't look at him. Just kept looking at the rising sun. "No, nothing happened." I answered his silent question. "I just can't seem to stop thinking about her."
"About who?"
Those eyes. The same color as mine, as all of my family. But they seemed so much deeper, to hold so much more life. "What secrets are they hiding? Why can't I stop picturing them in my head? Maybe I should stop looking at the sun. The color of the sky now only reminds me of her even more." I turned away and looked at my father. I then remembered his question. "Bella." I answered. "I think maybe I'm just anticipating meeting her since I now know that she'll be joining us someday." I gave him a small smile, hoping to convince him that was all it was. I could hear from his thoughts that I didn't completely succeed, but he still answered as though he believed me.
"It is strange to know. I suppose that had we known the names of the others before they joined us, we would have been feeling the same way. And since you know the face of this girl as well, I would guess that your fascination is even more piqued."
I chuckled a little. "Yes I guess it is." We went back inside.
Bella's face didn't leave my mind for weeks to come, but eventually my thoughts turned to other things. Over the years Bella's name and face only entered my mind on rare occasions or when Alice would think about how much she wanted to meet her. She somehow already missed the girl that would one day become her sister. She sometimes tried to look into the future to see if anything knew would surface. A new image or feeling. Sometimes to see if the vision she already had was still as clear as the day she saw it the first time. Only one time did it waver. This unsettled Alice and also me and Jasper a little as we were worried for Alice's sake. It was 1997. The vision became blurry and almost out of reach. Then something else came to her. A dark room, a crying baby and the sound of fearful crying and sobbing. Then a flash of scarlet, a shout "Bella GO NOW!" and then nothing.
I locked eyes with Alice who was sitting on the couch in the living room of our current house. "What was that? I didn't understand." I said, worry bleeding into my voice.
"I don't know." She answered. Then she hid her face in Jasper's chest beside her. "I think maybe that was part of her transformation. But it seems to have already passed, so I can't see any more of it."
The old vision came back then clear as ever. "There must have been a moment of doubt or indecision for her." Jasper said after we explained to him what had happened.
During the next few months Alice tried hard to see more of Bella, but barely anything came to her. Sometimes a quick flash of a scenery or this one time of an apple flying through the air, but never anything of consequence.
Because Alice's mind was so preoccupied by our unknown sibling, so was mine. I became worried for her. All of us had rough starts to our lives as vampires, not a single one of us thought about our transformations as a pleasant memory, but what was the crying baby about? The dark room seemed ominous in a way. What had led her to that room? These and many more questions plagued my mind when it had nothing else to do. I could only hope that the time of our meeting with her would come soon. Alice was sure that the event wasn't far away now since the clothing styles were beginning to portray the vision in the cafeteria. Hopefully my questions would soon be answered, and the worry and anxiousness I felt for my unknown sister would leave as soon as I met her. As soon as I saw that she was safe.
