Chapter 2 Moving to Forks

Bella POV 2005

"The new house looks good. What do you think, Luke?" I asked my little brother as we stood in front of our new home in Forks Washington. He turned around to look at me with a small half smile on his face. Being mute he needed to look at me to answer by using his hands to communicate with sign language. He told me this way that the house looked nice and he was excited to see his room.

I could tell that something was bothering him. I also already knew what it was. He was supposed to start elementary school on monday two days from now. Never having been to an actual school before but being homeschooled by me, he was very nervous. But he was trying to be brave for my sake. I decided not to comment on this right now as it would just make him sad.

"Well then, let's go inside and you can pick the room you want. Okay?" He agreed. The house had belonged to my father, the late police chief Swan. He had died about 6 months ago. I had been keeping tabs on him to make sure he was safe, but since he and everyone else believed me to be dead, I couldn't go to him. When I learned that he had passed away and his house was up for sale I took immediate action and bought the house. It really should have been passed on to me through his will, but again I was officially dead so the will didn't apply. When the retailer had asked about the fact that I had the same name as the previous resident's daughter, I had told her that Charlie swan was a sort of far out uncle a few times removed. He probably never spoke of me since I, like the woman said, had the same name as his deceased daughter and it very probably dragged out a lot of unpleasant feelings for him. She had accepted this with an apologetic smile.

Luke chose the smaller of the rooms upstairs and gave me the master bedroom. I hugged him briefly and told him to start getting his stuff from the car while I pulled some of the old things out to make room for his belongings. He ran off down the stairs and I, as always, kept a constant ear open for his movements. I looked around the room. This had been my fathers bedroom. It still smelled like him. It reminded me of the few summers I had spent here when I was little. I decided that right now was not the time to get emotional and start reminiscing over the few memories I still had of him. I grabbed a box and started filling it with his things. I had told the retailing lady to leave all of his stuff. Since I was family (in whatever relation she believed) I would take care of his things. I took the box I had just filled and brought it down the hall to the master bedroom. My old room. It wasn't actually that much bigger than the other one, it just had a bit more closet space. I decided to put all the stuff from Charlie's room in here. That way I could go through it tonight while Luke slept.

My room looked exactly as it did the last time I saw it. Small bed with pink flowery bedding, string lights on the wall beside the headboard, a small desk in the corner with an old computer and a medium sized window on the far wall. Everything was covered in a thick layer of dust. Clearly my father could not bear to enter this room very often, let alone clean it.

Luke and I spent the rest of the day cleaning and organizing our new home. Although Luke got tired pretty quickly so I let him play in the backyard instead. On the way into town I had stopped at a grocery store to make sure I had food for Luke. I made him macaroni and cheese for dinner. Since I couldn't taste anything and since the food was only for him, he was my taste tester. It had been almost a week since I had hunted, but I wasn't that thirsty. I had planned to go hunting tomorrow night right before going to the school for the first time. Just like Luke, I had decided to go to school as well. I had already done most of highschool, but I had been cut short in my junior year. So what better place to start than to pick up where I had left off? It had been a little difficult to forge the information about myself and Luke to enroll us in the town's school system, but I had somehow managed.

I used sunday to go over Lukes previous lessons with me as well as some of my own old school stuff to prepare for junior year. I also spent a lot of time trying to convince Luke that school would not be a disaster and that he would most definitely make friends. In the evening after making sure Luke was fast asleep, I went hunting. As always I tried to find my meal as quickly as possible so I could get back to Luke. I was always anxious when leaving him alone. I found two deer and decided that that was enough.

Monday morning came and it took a bit of coaxing to get Luke to actually eat his breakfast. He was so nervous it was making him nauseous. We got to the elementary school and met up with the principal and Luke's new helper teacher at the front office. He clung to me for a long time before I could convince him to let me go and give school a chance. His helper was named Shannon Jackson and would only be there to help translate his sign language for the teacher as well as the other students.

I waved goodbye as I watched them head into the classroom where he would be spending the entire day and hoped to God that I wasn't making a mistake by leaving him in the care of others for the next many hours. "Stop it Bells!" I scolded myself. "Of course he will be fine. All the other kids spend every day here and they are fine. Forks is a small town and out of the way. Nothing bad is going to happen." Even though I kept telling myself this, the knot in my stomach just wouldn't let up.

I drove my truck to the High School, nearly missing it were it not for the sign that said "Forks High School". The parking lot was fairly empty, so I got a good spot not too far from what I guessed was the main building. I walked to the building that had "Administrative office" written on a sign over the doors. The office was a lot warmer than the wintery chill of January outside. The cold didn't bother me, but I had to keep up the pretenses of being human so I had bundled myself up in a thick coat and a scarf.

A woman with striking red hair and glasses looked up from some papers as I walked in. Her eyes widened a fraction when they landed on my face.

"Hello." I said in my 'don't scare the humans' voice. "My name is Isabella Swan. I'm a new student and here to pick up my schedule."

"Ah, uhm.. Yes of course." The woman then gave me a kind smile. "My name is Ms. Cope. If you have any questions at all just ask." I nodded and accepted the papers she gave me. "This here is your schedule and that is a map of the school so you don't have to ask whenever you need to get anywhere." I looked at the map and tried to memories it. I've never been really good with maps. Ms. Cope handed me another piece of paper. "Take this paper to each of your teachers and have them sign it, then come back here at the end of your day and give it to me. Okay?" I confirmed to her that I had understood.

I was about to turn around and leave when she spoke again. "Are you related to the Cullens dear?" That was a weird question.

"Uhmm, no I don't think so. I'm related to the late chief of police. Why do you ask?" I said.

"Oh yes of course. I could have guessed as much from the name I suppose." She looked a little troubled now. "That was truly a tragic event. No, I only asked because you look a bit like them. The cullens I mean."

"I WHAT?!" I internally shrieked. I was not good with hiding my feelings, so it wasn't all that surprising to feel my eyes widen and my mouth slightly open. "How do you mean?" I asked in a calmer voice than I felt, a little hesitant to learn the answer. "Does this mean there are other vampires here? Oh no. Moving here might have been a huge mistake after all. Should I run?"

"Your eyes. You have the same striking eye color and your fair skin also reminds me of them a bit. Their children go here, two of them are in your year actually"

I relaxed a bit now and heaved an internal sigh. "Okay. If they have golden eyes, that means that they don't hunt people either. That doesn't necessarily mean I can trust them, but it does hopefully mean that I don't have to move again so soon after arriving."

"Oh I see." I said smiling with my lips as closed as possible so as to not scare her with my gleaming teeth. "Yes I suppose that would make someone wonder. No, I've never heard of the Cullens before, but I'm sure it's nothing more than a strange coincidence."

Ms. Cope nodded and affirmed my comment. She wished me a good day as I then left the office. When I got outside I relished in the cold air. It calmed me down a bit. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves even more and proceeded to walk towards building 3 for my first class. According to my schedule my first lesson of the day was English with Mr. Mason, then Government with Mr. Jefferson, Trigonometri with Mr. Varner, Spanish with Mrs. Goff, then lunch, Biology with Mr. Banner and then lastly gym with Coach Clapp.

I wondered to myself as I walked inside, whether any of the Cullens would be in the same classes as me. Ms. Cope mentioned that two of them were in my year. "Two of them. And she said 'their children' meaning two parental figures. That means with the two in my year, the two parents and the one or potentially more children in different years, they are a coven of at least five. Whether they are friendly or not, I better try not to piss them off."

I found the right classroom pretty easily. Two students in front of me hang up their dark coats on a long line of hooks. I copied them and took comfort in the fact that my own dark coat didn't stand out. I introduced myself to the teacher who gaucked a little at me as well as my name. If I had still had a circulatory system, my cheeks would have flushed dark red. This kind of attention was exactly what I didn't like. People staring.

Mr. Mason sent me to a seat in the back, which I was happy about. That would make it more difficult for the other students to look at me. They still managed though. After class was over a boy with greasy dark hair introduced himself to me as Eric. He looked like the over friendly chess club type. "So your name is Isabella Swan?"

"Bella." I corrected him.

"Where's your next class?"

I checked my schedule. "Government with Jefferson in building 6."

He offered to show me the way as he was going to building 4. Definitely over helpful. But at least I didn't have to cling to my map again like I did on the way in. We got our coats and then he led me forward.

Third class with Mr. Varner was so far my least favorite. He made me stand in front of the class and introduce myself. Even after becoming a vampire I still managed to stumble over my words because of nerves. At least I wasn't as much of a klutz anymore. Had I still been human, I would've tripped at least twice over the bags laying on the floor next to the desks.

A girl by the name of Jessica Stanley was in a few of my classes and after Spanish she introduced herself and her friend Angela Webber. They invited me to sit with them during lunch and I appreciated that.

We entered the cafeteria and got in line to buy food. I grabbed an apple and a bottle of water and waited for my turn to pay. While I stood there I suddenly caught the scent of something overly sweet. "Vampires." I thought. "I wonder…" I slowly looked around and then found five pairs of eyes fixated on me from a table in the back corner. All of their eyes were dark with a bit of a warm honey color on the outer rim of their irises. The same color my eyes were when I hadn't hunted in a couple of weeks. "They must be the Cullens. There are five though. Five students and two parents. That makes seven." My eyes widened a bit at the realization. Not enough to alert the humans, but the five pairs of eyes currently looking at me must have noticed because the big bearlike guy grinned a bit when it happened. I turned back to the line and paid for my apple and water. Jessica led me to a table in the middle of the room. It was already occupied by several of her friends whom she introduced to me. They all seemed very impressed by her bravery of speaking to me. Not surprising. A human would need bravery to speak to a vampire even if they didn't know what we were. Even without the red eyes a vampire normally had because of them hunting humans, we still had an ominous aura around us that made sure humans stayed away. Or at least that's what I've been told. For some reason, humans seemed quite comfortable around me. I had thought that this was because of my eyes, but looking at the Cullens again I noticed that no one sat near them. "I wonder if it's just me then." I thought.

When I had moved my eyes back to the Cullens table, I had found two of them already staring at me. They probably hadn't taken their eyes off me at all. The first was a small girl with a pixie haircut who was smiling widely and looked at me as though she had just found her favorite toy that had been missing for a long time. The other was a boy with bronze colored hair and a beautifully sculpted face. Even for a vampire, he was absolutely gorgeous. But he, unlike the pixie next to him, was not smiling. His eyebrows were drawn together and his mouth was set in a hard line. I couldn't decide whether he looked angry or puzzled. Either way, looking into his eyes while they were boring into mine seemed like a bad idea. I tore my eyes from him with great effort and looked at the last three. There was the bearlike guy who had grinned at me, something told me that even though he looked like a grizzly bear, he was more of a teddy bear on the inside. Next to him was an extremely beautiful blonde who looked to be very bored with everything around her, and last was a slim guy with blonde curls. He was too stiff in his seat and looked almost to be in pain. He should probably go hunting soon, that look reminded me of when I haven't hunted for too long and still tried to be around humans. I looked at the bronze haired boy again, he was still looking at me with that weird look. Maybe they weren't friendly after all. Maybe I should take Luke and run. "Stop it Bells. You don't even know them yet. I wonder if Luke is doing ok."

I reluctantly tuned back into the conversation at my own table. Angela was talking about her two little brothers, wondering what to cook for them tonight as their parents were gonna be out. That made me think of Luke again. "Maybe I can run to the Elementary School, see how he's doing and come back. If I run at full speed I should be able to make it in plenty of time."

"Bella? Are you listening?" A boy said, Mike I think his name was.

"Huh? I'm sorry, what?"

"I was asking what your next class is." Mike grinned widely at me.

"Uhm…" I thought for a moment before I remembered. "Biology with Mr. Banner. Why?" I already knew why, but better to portray innocents.

"That's my next class too. I could walk you there." He said his smile widening more than I thought possible. "Shoot. I need to make an excuse so I can go check on Luke."

"Actually, I need to go get something in my car, I think I left my phone there." I said as I stood from the table.

"Oh don't worry, nobody in this town would dare to take it." He tried to reassure me.

"Still, I'd feel better to have it with me." I said, but he persisted.

"I'll come with you then."

"No, that's ok. I'll see you in class, alright?" I smiled and hurried towards the doors. I glanced over at the Cullens again and saw that all their eyes were once again trained on me. I gave them a small smile and left the building. Once outside I put my apple and water in my bag, I would give them to Luke later, and walked towards my car. Just in case anyone could see me from the cafeteria windows, I didn't want them to think I had lied. Of course I had lied, but I didn't want them to know that. When I reached my car I looked back over my shoulder to make sure I was out of sight of the windows, looked around to make sure no one was close enough to see me, and then bolted for the treeline.
