Valentine's Surprise

Spencer sighed as he continued flipping through the pages in his book. He wasn't even that into it, but there was only so much one could do when locked up in Spring Ridge. Plus, it made for a good excuse to keep him a bit more isolated from the others, after all it was not like he had any interest in interacting with them. Just as he turned yet another page, he heard someone approach him.

"Spencer? You have a visitor." Harmony gave a small grin before pointing behind him.

Truthfully, he wasn't sure who it could be. There was a short list of people who would even consider visiting him let alone actually doing it. Plus, to be fair, there weren't a lot of people who he would want to visit him anyway. But off the top of his head, he guessed his father or grandmother. After setting his book down, he turned around and couldn't help but be greeted by one of the few people he hoped it would be…Trina.

Trina wouldn't admit it out loud, but while she was excited to see Spencer, she was also a bit nervous. After all what do two people who almost kissed with one being in a relationship say to each other. But even with all the thoughts and nerves inside of her, she knew she needed to see him for them to talk. However, when she came face to face with him, everything went blank for a minute. She still couldn't believe Spencer Cassadine of all people made her lose her breath with every glance he gave her. But in the classic Trina form, she kept her composure and gave him a small smile.

"Trina, I can't believe you're here." Spencer got up and walked towards her. He wasn't sure what to do if anything. Here he was standing in front of the girl he really liked and even almost kissed and yet Spencer still couldn't work the courage to do anything but just smile back at her. His mind couldn't help but think back to their goodbye at the gallery a little over a week ago. He'd be lying if he said he didn't think about the what ifs of that moment during his time in Spring Ridge so far.

"I told you I'd see you first."

"You did." He motioned for her to take seat at the table he was sitting at. "Please take a seat." In between helping her with her chair and going back to his, he couldn't help but sneakily run his hands through his hair and adjust his dull sweatshirt. After sitting, Trina couldn't help but look around for a minute to take in the sight. In doing so, she knew it was best to start this visit with the obvious question.

"No Esme?"

"She's not interning until later tonight." One would think a guy with a girlfriend would be thrilled so spend Valentine's Day with her regardless of location, but truth be told, he was much happier to have it spent with a visit from Trina, even if short lived. Trina took a small breath at hearing Esme wasn't around. The last thing she wanted was to get into with her, especially when this visit was about seeing Spencer.

"So how are you doing? She asked sweetly.

"I'm okay as one could be given the circumstances." He shrugged. Spencer sighed. Who was he kidding, this was Trina he was talking too. He knew she probably saw right through that answer. "Truthfully, I hate it here. I've haven't slept much; my wardrobe choices are limited, and my company consists of mostly sub-par reading material. Granted, I know I'm not supposed to be enjoying this environment, but I know it's what I deserve and if my great uncle Victor hadn't stepped in, it probably would have been worse so."

Although apart of her couldn't let out a mini grin at his complaints of the place, Trina did what she did best and listened to Spencer before giving him her thoughts on it all. "Well while it may not seem like much right now, you're doing the right thing. I mean you could have pretended to accept Ava for money but instead you did the noble thing and stuck to your job at Kelly's and now taking responsibility for your actions."

Deep down Spencer knew that while this sentence was the best choice legally, all of this in some way was also about Trina. Hearing her remind him that he was doing good, even if it didn't always feel like it, just gave him another boost to truly seeing this thing through. Plus, it gave himself a bit of assurance that he was not only making Trina proud but, on her way, to fully respecting him again. He couldn't help but give a charming smile and thanking her.

"So, what really brings you here? Not that I doubt you wanting to check in one me, but I'm sure you didn't come all this way just to listen to me complain about how awful it is here."

"No, I didn't. I mean of course I wanted to make sure you were doing okay, but I also wanted to talk to you about something…" Trina knew she just had to rip the band aid off fast and say the words. "We need to talk about what went down at gallery."

Spencer was a bit thrown off at her bringing up his goodbye. Sure, he had been thinking about it a lot since starting his time, but he just assumed this conversation would wait to be brought up after he was done. Apart of him wished it would be, especially given his growing suspicions of Esme. He hoped this time would let him figure everything out first. But if Trina wanted to talk about then he would. "Well typically when two people like each other…" he started joking.

Trina rolled her eyes. "I'm serious Spencer. We can't just pretend that we didn't almost kiss."

"You're right, we can't." He took another breath, trying to gather his thoughts. "Okay look, I think we can both agree that there's an attraction between us."

"Is that all it is? Because if so then we can just pass it off as a moment and move on from it." Trina didn't want that, but if that's what he wanted, then she there was nothing she could do.

"No." Spencer reached out and grabbed one of her hands. "The truth is, I've never met anyone like you Trina. You're not only beautiful and self-aware but you also know how to get through to me, which has never been easy." Spencer knew he probably shouldn't be saying all of this given his status but what Kevin said to him has really stuck with him and if he doesn't say everything now, who knows when he would get the chance to again. "I like you, Trina. I have for a while, but I have just been struggling with what I thought I should be doing and what I want and need to do. Everything from going after Ava to staying loyal to Esme, all those things I thought were the best things to do. But after meeting and getting to know you, I've come to realize that they aren't what I want anymore"

Trina couldn't help but let out a small smile while Spencer was talking. Sure, she knew they've had some flirty moments off and on, but never did she think Spencer had actual feelings for her. Apart of her was happy to know more about how he felt, but the other part felt like it wasn't going to be as easy as just admitting feelings. "You know, when I first met you, or rather Victor, I have to say he sparked my interest. I knew there had to be more to Victor that what was being let on. Then when I found out you who really were, and it was easy to see there was more to you than just your title. Then entered Esme and everything with Ava and for some reason I still had these lingering feelings for you. I hated it because I felt like I was just some pawn in your little game. But the more I got to know the real you, things started changing again. I guess it's safe to say that while you drive me nuts, I've always had feelings for you."

Spencer let his smile grow at her words. He always knew there was something special about Trina, even back to when he was Victor. No matter what, there was always some time of pull she had on him. She made him want to be a better person and a friend. But throughout everything, he just ignored what he really felt and continued to focus on his reasoning behind returning to Port Charles. Clearly the universe had different plans from the moment he meant Trina in the gallery all those months ago.

"But nothing can happen between us." Trina hated saying the words, but she knew it just must be this way. "Not only are you still here in Spring Ridge but you're still with Esme." She took a soft breath. "I do want to believe you when you said all these things to me but I just can't help still have some doubts. Right now, it just feels like we're right back where we started last summer. What seemed like mutual attraction ends up with me on the sidelines and you still with Esme. It's just another prime example of your words not matching your actions." Truthfully, Trina still didn't understand the reasoning behind Spencer staying with Esme, especially having admit his feelings for her. But she knew what ever was going on between Spencer and Esme was between them.

"I know." Spencer nodded, not liking having to wait but he knew it was for the best. He knew the first step was finishing off his time in Spring Ridge, however Esme was a different story. While Spencer wanted to let Trina in on his growing suspicions of Esme, he knew he needed to this alone for now. "So why don't we just table this until I'm done here? After all we'll have plenty of more time to talk at the gallery." he asked, with some hope in his voice.

"Good. I hope you are taking this time to rest up because come time for you start at the gallery, you're on busy all the time. I've already got a long list of projects for you that are just sitting there patiently waiting." Trina teased.

"Oh, I have no doubt about that. Like I said before I'm ready for the challenge." He gently rubbed her hand before looking back at her. "By the way, you were never just a pawn in my plan. I know it probably seemed that way and I'm truly sorry for that. But the truth is, I just wanted to get to know you better, that's why I came to look for you at the Savoy that night. I loved the way you handled yourself and I felt bad for having you get up in that mess."

Just as Trina was about to respond, she heard a familiar voice from behind her., she quickly moved her hand away from Spencer's before looking up at Esme, who already shockingly managed to insert herself right next to Spencer. It honestly screamed desperate, but Trina was in no mood to deal with her today.

"Trina. How nice of you to come visit Spence…on Valentine's Day." Esme gave the usual fake smile.

"I was just leaving." She got up and throw on her coat before looking back to Spencer. "I'm happy to see you're doing okay. I'll see you later?"

"Not if I see you first." He made sure to give her one last smile to hide the disappointment in her leaving. But in true Spencer fashion, he made sure to keep his eye on Trina until she was out of sight.
