Author Notes: Happy Valentine's Day!
This is set during the off-season in Act I. It takes place on Valentine's Day. In this fic, Eijun and Mei are already together.
I hope y'all enjoy it!
A Sweet Day
Mei tapped his foot impatiently, taking out his phone.
Eijun was late.
They had agreed to go out on a date after practice, choosing to meet up at the train station instead of at Seidou.
Where was he?
He huffed, checking his phone for any missed calls or texts. He noticed a few from his teammates, causing him to roll his eyes. Instead of looking at them, he looked at the time before huffing and pocketing his phone.
(Eijun was more important than his teammates. Even if Eijun, that impertinent brat, was late.)
"Mei!"
He looked up, furrowing his eyebrows.
He could've sworn…
"Mei! Over here!"
Mei looked around the busting street, noticing Eijun making his way through the crowd.
Finally.
He looked him up and down, relaxing despite himself at the sight of that familiar bright smile.
Eijun looked alright, which was a relief.
(Seriously, what took him so long?)
Mei huffed as Eijun stopped a couple of meters away. "You're late!"
"Sorry, Mei." Eijun rubbed the back of his head. "Practice ran late, and I…" He flushed, looking away briefly. "I almost forgot something and had to go back for it."
Mei's angry blue eyes softened at the mention of practice. "I always tell you that if you're going to be late that you should let me know," he scolded lightly.
Even though Eijun had to know he wasn't that angry, Eijun bowed his head briefly, a regrettable look on his face. "Sorry."
Mei almost huffed again. "What did you almost forget?"
Eijun looked sheepish as he held up a medium blue gift bag. "Your chocolate."
"You…!" Mei stepped closer, his eye twitching. "I spent all that time reminding you about Valentine's Day and about my favorite chocolate." He jabbed his chest. "And you almost forgot it?"
Eijun narrowed his eyes. "I couldn't help it! I told you practice ran late! I…" He sighed, looking away. "I felt rushed. Because I…"
"What?"
Eijun looked back at him, meeting his eyes. "I didn't want to keep you waiting."
Mei's lips twitched despite himself. His chest felt warm. "I noticed you were running through the crowd." He stepped closer, closing the little distance that separated them.
"Mei…"
Mei rolled his eyes. "I guess I can forgive you." He smirked as Eijun looked relieved. "I didn't know you like me that much."
"You're my boyfriend, you idiot." Eijun snorted.
Mei's smirk widened. "You're a lucky guy, you know."
"Stop reminding me." Eijun huffed, causing Mei to feel amused. "I don't know why you always do that."
Mei snickered, reaching out and holding his hand, his lips twitching as Eijun let their fingers interlock. "Because it's the truth? Or maybe because you're an idiot?"
"I'm not an idiot!"
Mei almost snickered again. "As much as I would love to argue with you…" He grinned cheekily at Eijun's glare. "We have a date to get to, remember?"
Eijun shot him a dirty look. "Of course I remember!" He took a few steps away, looking behind him when Mei didn't follow him. "Aren't you coming?"
"Not yet." Mei pulled him closer, his lips twitching as Eijun let out a surprised sound. "We still need to greet each other."
Eijun blinked, his mouth opening a little. "Oh, right." He let go of Mei's hand, wrapping his arms around Mei's back.
Mei let out an approving hum, wrapping his arms around Eijun's waist before leaning in and kissing him, almost grinning when Eijun immediately responded.
Their relationship wasn't easy.
(Why did Mei end up liking someone who went to school so far away? It was such a pain sometimes.)
Mei wasn't stupid.
He liked to tease Eijun by telling him he was lucky to date him, but he knew he was just as lucky as Eijun.
Eijun could have anyone he wanted.
He was like a human sun.
People gravitated to him, and he didn't even realize it.
(In fact, Mei wouldn't be surprised if some of his teammates had crushes on him. Every time he brought it up, though, Eijun always laughed it off, saying that was impossible.)
Mei pulled away a few moments later, grinning at Eijun's whine. He let out a surprised sound himself as Eijun pulled him back in, kissing him.
Every time they went out on a date, Mei had to drive away pests who got too close to Eijun.
The worst ones were the pests who dared flirt with Eijun in front of him, some even going as far as to ask Eijun out, as if they had ignored him.
(How dare they ignore him! He was the prince!)
Eijun, of course, had never realized they had been flirting with him, but the few times he finally realized they had asked him out, he always told them he wasn't interested and already had a boyfriend.
(Which always made him feel better (and smug). It served them right. They didn't seriously think they could steal his boyfriend away from him, right?)
Eijun pulled away several moments later, smiling softly. "Sorry I'm late, Mei."
"You already apologized for that, idiot." Mei shook his head fondly. He kissed Eijun's cheek before pulling away and holding out a hand. "Come on. Let's start our date."
Eijun beamed, almost blinding him. "Yeah!"
They walked hand in hand throughout the city, catching the other up on what had been going on recently.
They, of course, had been calling and texting each other as much as possible, but it wasn't enough.
It was never enough.
Mei laughed as Eijun told him an anecdote about something that happened at school, missing the way Eijun watched him laugh with soft eyes.
Contrary to popular belief (mainly his teammates), Mei had been the one to ask Eijun out. He had asked him out after the fall tournament finals game.
Mei had asked him out on a hot chocolate date, telling him he would give him pitching tips.
Eijun had already looked happy after the fall tournament finals game, but when Mei had asked him out, he had looked even happier, his bright smile brightening (if it was possible) and a cute blush on his cheeks.
Of course, it hadn't been until much later that he learned Eijun had been that happy (and agreed to the date) because Eijun had a crush on him.
Mei had felt smug once he learned about Eijun's crush on him, but he had also felt… happy and relieved.
Sure, Eijun wasn't a very good pitcher or that smart.
But Mei had… felt something.
He had felt something when they had first met and again after the summer tournament opening ceremony.
Eijun was cute and a southpaw like him.
Mei hadn't known a lot about Eijun when he asked him out, but he felt grateful every day that he did.
Because Eijun belonged to him.
Eijun returned his feelings.
Not any of his teammates' feelings.
His.
"Mei?"
He blinked, Eijun's voice bringing him out of his thoughts and causing him to look over at him.
Eijun furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you alright?"
Mei's chest felt warm at the concern in his eyes. "I'm alright. I was just thinking."
"What about?"
Mei hummed, kissing his cheek. "About us."
To his amusement, Eijun flushed. "W-What? Why were you thinking about us?"
"Well, today's Valentine's Day." Mei grinned cheekily. "I had a lot of fun rubbing it in my teammates' faces that I have a boyfriend."
Eijun rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Of course you did. I'm not even surprised you did that."
"You know me well."
Eijun snorted. "Well, we have been dating for a while now."
"I wish your teammates would understand that." Mei clicked his tongue.
When he had asked Eijun out, he had done it in front of Eijun's teammates.
They… hadn't been pleased at first, trying to convince Eijun to date someone else.
(Which further supported his suspicions of Eijun's teammates' feelings for him.)
Eijun, the stubborn brat that he was, though, hadn't wanted anyone else and refused to listen to them.
According to Eijun, they had a lot of arguments about their relationship until they finally gave in, reluctantly accepting their relationship.
It didn't stop them from being protective, though.
Mei hadn't visited Seidou that much, but whenever he visited and hung out with Eijun, Eijun's teammates refused to leave them alone.
(One day, they had been fed up and hid from Eijun's teammates for the rest of the day. That had been a nice day. They had spent most of their time making out, Eijun's left hand in his.)
Eijun's eyes softened. "I'm sorry, Mei. I've tried talking to them about us, but…"
Mei scoffed. "It's not your fault. They're just jealous."
"Eh? Jealous?"
Mei smirked, kissing his cheek. "They think I'm stealing you away from them."
"But…" Eijun frowned. "But they're still my teammates."
Mei shrugged. "I don't blame them for feeling threatened." He gestured to himself. "I mean, have you seen me?" His smirk widened as Eijun looked him up and down. "And I'm the ace of Inashiro."
Eijun flushed, as if he had belatedly realized what he had been doing. "They can't accept that I'm dating the enemy."
"Exactly." Mei shrugged again. "It probably wouldn't be as bad if you weren't dating me, but I—"
Eijun stopped walking, causing Mei to stop and look over at him. "But I…" Eijun tightened his grip on his hand. "But I don't want anyone else!"
Mei's eyes softened at the sadness in his eyes. "Don't worry. I don't plan on leaving you anytime soon." He grinned cheekily. "Even if you're not as good as me."
"What was that, you jerk! I'll make you regret those words!"
Mei's grin widened. "I'm looking forward to it, Eijun."
"You don't even believe me!"
Mei snickered, tugging Eijun forward.
He hoped, for Eijun's sake, that Seidou would accept their relationship soon.
(… Okay, it was for his sake, too. Eijun's overprotective teammates were so annoying.)
They arrived at the café a few moments later, Eijun sighing at the warmth.
After ordering their drinks, they sat down in some red armchairs next to the window.
"This is a nice place."
Mei puffed his chest out proudly. "Isn't it? I've been wanting to take you here for a while now." He looked around, making a face. "I could do without all the pink decorations, though."
Eijun snorted, the corners of his lips twitching. "Well, as you said earlier, it is Valentine's Day." He grinned devilishly at his dirty look. "I think it looks nice."
"You would say that," Mei muttered, sipping his drink.
Eijun laughed loudly, his eyes softening a couple of moments later. "Mei… It's good to see you."
Mei flushed despite himself, looking away briefly. "What are you saying all of a sudden?"
"It's true. Today's Valentine's Day, and I…" Eijun closed his eyes briefly, looking pained, causing Mei's heart to clench. "I wanted to see you. I'm happy we got to meet up today."
Mei's eyes softened despite himself. "Yeah, me too. I've been wanting to see you again." He huffed. "Everyone at school was so annoying today."
"You mean all the obvious couples, right?" Eijun frowned deeply.
Mei clicked his tongue. "I didn't even know Inashiro has that many couples. It's like they've all been hiding this whole time."
"Yeah, it was hard to watch."
Mei impulsively reached out, holding Eijun's left hand. "Hey, we're together now. Let's make the most of it." He winked. "I know you've been looking forward to seeing me again."
Eijun snorted, the corners of his lips twitching. "Yeah because I just told you that."
"And I'll say it as much as I want." Mei smirked. "It makes me happy, you know."
Eijun rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Don't you mean smug?"
"That too, of course."
Eijun huffed, the corners of his lips twitching. "You and your ego." His eyes lit up a few moments later. "Oh, right! Your chocolate!" He picked up the bag, holding it out to him.
Mei's eyes lit up. "I'm glad you remembered." He grabbed the bag, raising an eyebrow. "You remembered my favorite kind, right?"
"Who do you think I am?" Eijun scoffed. "Of course I remembered your favorite kind!"
Mei's lips twitched. "I had to check. You can be forgetful at times."
"I'm not an idiot!"
Mei laughed. "I didn't say that."
"You were implying that," Eijun accused, shooting him a dirty look. "Besides, how could I forget after all those times you reminded me?"
Mei shrugged. "They say repetition is the easiest way to remember something." He grinned cheekily as Eijun glared at him. "But you'd know all about that, huh?"
"Just…" Eijun flushed for some reason. "Just open the present."
Mei hummed. "Normally, I'd scold you for telling me what to do. I'll let you off the hook today, though." His grin widened as Eijun muttered something low enough he couldn't catch. "Did you say something?"
"… No, nothing important." Eijun huffed, gesturing to the bag. "Do you want the chocolate or not?"
Mei almost said something, but he decided it didn't matter, more interested in Eijun's chocolate. He eagerly dug through the bag, eyebrows furrowing as he pulled out a nicely wrapped medium sized gift box.
(He could've sworn he heard Eijun laugh. It was probably just his imagination, though.)
The wrapping paper was mostly white with blue waves on every inch of it, causing him to blink.
He had thought Eijun would choose a more romantic wrapping paper.
(Or one with baseballs on it.)
Aware of Eijun's eyes on him, he unwrapped the box and opened it, almost laughing at the sight of twelve small pale yellow baseball chocolates.
(He knew Eijun would choose the baseball ones.)
More importantly…
His eyes lit up, noticing the color of the chocolates.
Eijun had remembered his favorite kind.
"What do you think?" Eijun puffed his chest out proudly. "Pretty good, huh?"
Mei snorted. "I'm glad I reminded you so many times."
"No, I mean…" Eijun sighed for some reason. "Never mind."
Mei raised an eyebrow before looking at the chocolates and picking one up. He felt even more curious at noticing Eijun's nervous look out of the corner of his eye.
Whatever Eijun was hiding from him could wait until after he tried Eijun's chocolate.
Mei almost moaned at the taste.
Eijun's chocolate was so good.
The creamy and smooth taste reminded him of his favorite ice cream. Eijun had bought good white chocolate, as it didn't taste too sweet. It tasted like fresh milk, but he could also taste the floral and aromatic cocoa butter qualities of the white chocolate.
(It was a good thing he had reminded Eijun so many times to buy the good white chocolate, as the other white chocolate paled in comparison to the good ones.)
Mei hummed. "These are pretty good. Where did you buy them?"
"I made them."
Mei hummed again, looking at the chocolates. "Huh~ That's nice." He blinked a few times, belatedly registering what Eijun said before looking at him, his jaw dropping despite himself. "Wait, what?"
Eijun flushed, smiling proudly. "I made them. Pretty good, huh?"
… Oh.
That was what Eijun meant earlier.
"I didn't know you can make chocolate." Mei grinned cheekily. "I'm surprised."
Eijun huffed. "What do you mean 'you're surprised'?"
"Well, you don't strike me as the type of person who can make chocolate." Mei's grin widened at his dirty look. "You're impatient a lot of the time."
Eijun rolled his eyes. "I don't want to hear that from you. Besides, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to make chocolate."
"Is that so?" Mei raised an eyebrow. "I suppose if someone like you can make chocolate, I'll have no problem with it."
Eijun glared at him. "What was that!" He blinked a few times, as if belatedly registering what Mei said. "You're going to make chocolate?"
Mei waved a hand. "Maybe next year."
"I'd like to see that." Eijun grinned devilishly. "I wonder if it'll taste good."
Mei smirked. "Now, now. You shouldn't underestimate me. I'm sure I'll make some that are just as good as these."
"Then I'm looking forward to it." Eijun's grin widened. "I'll be sure to keep my expectations low."
Mei's smirk widened. "So that you'll be amazed by how good it is? I like it."
Eijun snorted. "No, I mean I'll keep my expectations low so that I don't expect anything good."
"What was that, you impertinent brat!"
They bickered playfully for a little bit, Mei enjoying having Eijun's attention.
(They could never do anything like this at Seidou. Eijun's teammates would get in the way.)
Mei still couldn't believe Eijun made the chocolate.
He thought Eijun would buy it from some store.
It was very sweet, and it made his chest warm.
"Why are you smiling?"
Mei blinked before furrowing his eyebrows. "I am?"
"You were." Eijun frowned. "You didn't realize it?"
Mei laughed softly. "I guess not." He almost grinned at Eijun's expectant look. "I was thinking about you, idiot."
"Eh? Me?"
Mei looked at the chocolates. "I didn't think you'd make these for me." He looked at Eijun, almost smiling at noticing his flushed cheeks. "It's strange. A lot of people have given me handmade chocolate before, and I didn't care."
"What about now?"
Mei hummed, reaching out and holding Eijun's left hand. "I still don't care. But if it's from you…" He grinned cheekily. "Let's just say that if you decide to make chocolate for me again next year, I'll gladly eat it."
Eijun beamed, looking as happy as when he asked him out. "Then I'll definitely remember! Thank you, Mei!"
"Don't worry." Mei's grin widened as he pulled him closer. "I'll make sure to remind you about my favorite kind of chocolate."
Eijun snorted, leaning in closer. "After all that time you spent reminding me?" He grinned devilishly. "You must really like me."
"Well…" Mei smirked, reaching out and rubbing Eijun's lips with his thumb. "It's not every day I ask someone out, you know."
Eijun shivered. "Remind me again why I like you?"
"Oh, I can think of many reasons." Mei's smirk widened. "But if you're only asking for one of them, then…" He closed the gap separating their lips and kissed him, smug when Eijun eagerly kissed him back.
Mei had never regretted asking Eijun out.
Sure, they argued a lot of the time.
And sure, he didn't like Eijun's overprotective teammates.
Everything was worth it, though, if it meant he got to keep Eijun by his side.
Eijun pulled away a few moments later, smiling softly. "Happy Valentine's Day, Mei."
Mei pulled him close, Eijun yelping as he fell into his lap. He snickered at his dirty look, tightening his grip around him when Eijun turned around in his lap to face him. "Happy Valentine's Day, Eijun." He smiled softly.
Eijun's eyes widened before softening.
Knowing that that look was just for him…
It was almost as sweet as Eijun's chocolate.
Mei chuckled, causing Eijun to tilt his head.
Thanks to Eijun, it ended up being a sweet day.
He knew next year's Valentine's Day would be just as sweet.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Author Notes: I hope y'all enjoyed this fic.
Reviews/Favorites/Follows are appreciated.
I managed to write another short fic! I wanted to write some Meisawa fluff for Valentine's Day, and I'm happy I managed to finish this on time. I've been writing so much angst recently (and I've got some more angst to work on for my That Sky series), so this felt good to write.
It's always nice to think about Eijun asking Mei out, but I like imagining Mei asking Eijun out, too. Mei would have no problem asking Eijun out in front of his teammates.
This, of course, isn't a part of my That Sky series, but if y'all like Meisawa and haven't checked it out yet, please check it out. It's an ongoing Canon Compliant (ish) Meisawa series. I'm about to start writing a fic that takes place after the summer tournament opening ceremony in Eijun's second year. Eijun and Mei have been hiding their relationship from the rest of Seidou for a while now, and y'all will get to see more of Seidou's reaction to their relationship.
See y'all next time!
