Join me for the ride of cringey self inserts and mary sue life, as this fic is just to please my 13 year old self and nobody else.
It was a normal morning, a tedious boring morning. Everything was going to schedule.
Marie wiped some sweat of her brow after having lifted the feed for the cows into the trough. The cows were all calm and grazing on their feed happily. Marie knew what came next and she dreaded it. Scooping the poop out of the stalls. She shuddered.
Before she had the chance to start with the dreaded task though, a cow suddenly started panicking, followed shortly after by the rest of the herd. Not having seen this before, young Marie ran over to the house bordering the barn, her home.
"Mama! Papa! The cows are acting weird!" Marie yelled as she stormed into the kitchen. Her mother turned around from where he was washing the dishes as her father looked up from his paperwork "I'm sure it's fine sweety, I'll come look anyways if that helps soothe your nerves." He said kindly. Mother sighed kindly, just happy to see her family interact. She rubbed her pregnant belly briefly before returning to her chores.
As Marie all but dragged her father to the barn, he started worrying as a soft rumbling noise was heard from the distant. It sounded like footsteps amplified. He felt a drop of sweat roll down his neck. Surely it couldn't be the case?
As they moved into the barn her fathers concern grew. The cows were now acting erratically, and would hurt themselves if it continued. He put two fingers to his mouth and whistled sharply, but the herd was still panicked.
As the rumbling grew louder, he grabbed Marie's hand and rushed them out the barn door, but it was too late. They were greeted by a 10 meter titan waltzing on into the small village. People were screaming, and the first specs of blood were visible.
"Papa?" Marie asked, frightened. Her father looked down at her "Get your mom now, I'm gonna ready the carriage." He said bluntly before rushing off. Marie felt tears running down her cheeks as she ran into the home to grab her mother. She had heard tales about the titans, plenty of them. She did not want to find out what happened when the titan got too close to them.
"Mama, mama! Titans are here!" She yelled in absolute hysterics. Her mother turned around, thinking it was a joke, but saw the frightened face of her daughter and instantly switched. She grabbed her hand without speaking any words and led them outdoors to the smaller shed next to the barn.
They were shocked to see more titans had entered the area, and many people were crowding around the shed. Her mother pushed past them to see many people trying to climb on the cart hysterically, roughly shoving each other aside. Her father was trying to get everyone to calm down to no avail.
Before people knew it, a wheel broke off the cart, rendering it useless. New hysteria broke out as one of the horses fled, the other being reigned in by her father. Her mother and father coordinated wordlessly, meeting each other at the back entrance and avoiding the mass hysteria.
"Martha, take Marie and go. The horse can't hold more than two people so please, save Marie and the baby!" He said desperately, tears streaming down his face. Her mother looked shocked "Frederic, I can't just leave you here!" She grasped onto her father's shoulders tightly. Frederic however ushered them onto the horse, Marie in front with Martha holding the reigns and Marie.
"Please darling, I'll be fine I promise!" Her father said, pleading her to go. Sharing a final hug and kiss, Martha rode off with Marie, heading towards the Trost district, the one closest to them.
Frederic watched them go, knowing his death was coming. As he turned around, he saw a 5 meter class titan approaching him, smiling sickly to itself. He wanted to run in fear but felt his knees buckle.
Marie looked around desperately screaming out for her father, but all she saw was him smile at her a final time before being chomped in half.
Marie was tired, bone and bone tired, when they finally arrived at the trost district. They luckily managed to enter in with the last mob of people before the wall was closed off once more. Marie heard being screaming outside the gate, begging to be let in, but with lots of gorey sounds, it soon faded away.
Martha led them towards the refugee camp, an old barn for food storage, where handouts were being given. Martha gave her horse to one of the soldiers beckoning for him, and knew it was the last time the trusty steed would aid them.
Marie was numbly following Martha, who was holding her hand tightly. They managed to score a bread roll each as nighttime rolled around. They settled on some haystacks before falling into a restless sleep, tears still leaking from their eyes.
Marie woke up in the unfamiliar barn, dehydrated and sporting a nasty headache. Martha was still snoozing besides her, so she softly nudged her awake. Martha woke up with a start, before quickly recomposing herself for her daughter's sake. Martha donned a fake cheerful smile "Let's go get some breakfast shall we?".
They both walked outside the barn where a scuffle had just broken out. A young boy with short brown hair had just kicked one of the soldiers in the shin, causing him to turn on the young boy. Martha suddenly rushed forward, stepping between the two.
"Please forgive my nephew, he has been through a lot." Martha said sheepishly, rubbing her head. The boy was about to speak up when the soldier tsk'ed before leaving. Martha turned around to lead the boy back to the side when two other kids ran up. Marie looked on confused.
When the walked up to Marie, Martha was quick to explain "Marie, this is Eren Yaeger, Dr Yaeger's son." Marie cocked her head in question "Dr Yaeger was doing checkups on me for the baby." she explained. Marie nodded before sticking out her hand in greeting "I'm Marie Berger." she introduced herself. Eren shook her hand politely before being dragged away again by the two other kids she didn't know yet. Martha looked at him with a small twinkle in her eye, no doubt grateful that he was still alive.
They ate their breakfast in silence as Marie was still not feeling like herself since yesterday's happenings. Swallowing her bread was hard, but as a dairy farmer's daughter, she knew nutrition was important.
After a few days had passed, it was decided the refugees would help cultivate crops en masse. There was already a food shortage before they arrived, which meant they had to make up for their existence in the middle wall.
However, thing turned more dire.
There were still far too many people, so it was decided the elderly would be sent off outside the walls, along with a group of drawn adults.
Her mother was drawn.
Marie was uncontrollably sobbing as she had to see her mother off. Martha was patting her head, trying to comfort her daughter, but she was in tears as well.
"W-What about the baby?" Marie asked. Martha smiled wryly "He will be safe with me, I promise." Martha lied as easily as she breathed. Both knew what would happen to the pair. It made it all the more bitter knowing the baby will have never seen the outside world.
Before Martha left Marie, she gave her the bracelet she had been wearing. "Keep this as close to you as you can at all times, Marie." Martha said softly "You will know what to do with it when the time comes." she finished.
Marie could not even see her mother through her teary eyed vision but gave her one last hug for good measure. Martha hugged her back tightly "I love you Marie" she whispered. "I love you too mama." Marie whispered back.
And then her mom and little sibling she never got to meet were gone. For good.
She was sitting on the ground, leaning heavily against a wall when she decided, she would become a soldier and become strong enough to protect both herself and those dear to her. She would not let this happen again.
