This story is a tribute all the people in medical services, who hear and see things we could never imagine hearing or seeing. This is not a funny story, it's the hard truth.

The time in this story is around season 2 / 3.

It was raining in adventure bay, just a peaceful light rain. Marshall was in the forest walking home together with Chase after spending time with Jake and Everest up the mountain. The rain didn't really bother the two pups as they just calmly walked home, then they heard someone running through the Forrest yelling: 'come here you little dirty dog!'

Marshall and Chase looked up. 'What is he doing?' Chase asked. 'Could be a dog running away from his owner.' Marshall said, looking around to see if he could spot the guy. 'Look that must be the pup.' Marshall said pointing at a brown pup running in the distance. 'Come let's continue walking, Jake said the rain would get worse later on, I don't mind a little water but why get extra wet.' Chase said. Marshall agreed and looked back one more time, seeing that the man had catches up to his dog and out him on a lead.

The next day Marshall returned to the forest, curious about the brown pup. It was hard to smell any trail as indeed, the rain did get worse later that evening. Marshall went to the little hill where he last saw the pup caught by its owner, from the hill Marshall could see an old wooden house. Maybe the dog came from that house, Marshall thought to himself. Curious Marshall walked to that house. The house was old and was barely up to code. The fences were also wooden and were starting to rot. Marshall looked through the fence gate and there, in the shadow of the tree, laid the brown pup. Marshall looked around and saw the pup was chained to an old rotten pup house that would definitely not protect you against rain. The poor pup seemed very bored, no toy was in sight.

The pup spotted the Dalmatian looking through the fence. The pup looked at the house and the proceeded to come closer to the fence gate, which he could barely reach with the chain on. 'What brings a dog like you here?' The pup asked. The pup sounded a bit sick. 'I saw you running from your owner yesterday, curious me wanted to look where you came from, I understand that you would run away.' Marshall said looking at the poor conditions the pup lived in. 'Yeah, it's not worth doing though, he always manages to find me.' The pup said. 'How did such a nice pup as you ended up here?' Marshall asked curiously.

'The daughter of my owner wanted a pup, so I was brought here, but after a year the girl disappeared from the house and I never saw them again, since then, I'm not allowed to go inside.' The pup said. 'You've been living here in the cold the whole time since then?' Marshall asked, 'yeah, not the best life I know.' The pup said. 'Running away has no use, I mostly try to hide in the forest but there he finds me, I have no idea where else to go.' The pup said. Marshall looks around. This poor pup, stuck outside, nothing to do, no fun. Marshall thought to himself. 'What breed are you, haven't seen your breed before.' Marshall asked. 'I'm a Briard breed dog, mostly herding or family dogs.' The pup said. 'Do you have a name?' Marshall asked. 'O yeah sorry, my name is Barley, that girl came up with it, what's your name?' The pup said. 'Cool name! Mine is Marshall.' Marshall said.

'Isn't that based on a guy that does safety things and stuff?' Barley asked. 'Yeah, I do work in a rescue team as a fire and EMT dog.' Marshall said. 'That makes sense.' The pup laughed. Marshall saw the pups tail go up for the first time, Marshall figured that sadly, that doesn't happen to often.

Marshall's pup tag goes of and Marshall sees Ryder messaged him. Saying everyone is going to have fun on the beach and if Marshall wanted to come. Marshall reacted with sure. 'I have to go little pup, my friends are asking me.' Marshall said. 'Oh okay, will you come over more often?' The pup asked. 'Sure thing.' Marshall replied, seeing barley seemed happier now. Okay, see you next time!' The pup excitedly said.

Marshall left with a nice feeling, helping people and animals is his favorite thing, making someone in such a situation smile made Marshall very happy.

Two days later Marshall returned to the old wooden house. He heard the human screaming again. Marshall stayed out of sight until the human disappeared, then he looked through the fence gate again. Barley was laying down again looking sad. Then he saw Marshall and gave him a smile as he walked towards him. He had a shorter chain on so he couldn't come all the way to the fence.

'Escaped again?' Marshall asked. 'No, sometimes he just yells at me for no reason.' Barley said. Marshall looked at barley, he seemed to have wounds on him. 'Did he hit you?' Marshall asked. 'Last night yes, sometimes he comes home late with a lot of drinks and he just randomly starts screaming and stuff.' Barley said. 'Drunk humans are so annoying.' Marshall said realizing the human was probably drunk.

'By the way, I got you a little something, I'll throw it to you.' Marshall said. Marshall reached for his pup gear which had a little bone attached to the side. He threw it over the fence and it reached Barley. 'What is that may I ask?' Barley asked. 'Never had a bone before? You should bite it, it tastes good.' Marshall said. 'Barley looked a bit confused, then put it in his mouth. 'Wow this stuff is good.' Barley said with the bone still in his mouth.

'Right?! It's one of my favorites.' Marshall said. 'Thank you Marshall, you are a really nice dog.' Barley said with a little smile on his face.

Two weeks later

As usual Marshall walks to the old wooden house. Marshall was making sure the human wasn't outside when the human came outside. He starts scolding. 'Where did that little hairy thing go!' He yells. Did Barley escape again? Marshall thought, I'll better look for him.

Marshall walks through the forest but doesn't catch any smell from the young pup. As it was almost time for dinner Marshall returned to the lookout, hoping Barley had found his freedom.

3 days went by and Marshall didn't see Barley, not in the wild and not at the house. Marshall just couldn't get the pup out of his head as he was walking home after a long day of helping farmer Yumi with her farm, now it was getting dark and Marshall went back to the lookout. Marshall was walking towards the bridge while thinking about Barley when he saw something on the bridge, as Marshall came closer, he saw a figure standing on the side of the bridge. Realizing what this could mean Marshall ran towards the figure. As he arrived, he saw who was standing on the side of the bridge ready to jump off, yeah it was Barley. 'Hey wait!' Marshall told Barley. Barley didn't expect to see Marshall and tears rolled down his face. 'It's not your fault.' Barley said. Then, he jumped. 'Nooo!' Marshall screamed as he saw the dog jump off. Marshall looked down and saw the pup hit the water. We need to jump into action, Marshall thought. Marshall immediately called Ryder. 'We have a suicide attempt at the bridge.' Marshall said through the pup tag. 'Okay, do what you need to do, I'll round up the rest.' Ryder replied. Marshall then ran, faster than he'd ever ran before, towards the lookout, not even going up the lookout Marshall jumped in his EMT truck and drove out. 'Where do we meet.' Ryder asked. 'The beach.' Marshall reacted.

Marshall stopped his truck on the beach facing the bridge. Marshall grabbed everything he might need to help Barley. Not much later Ryder parked his ATV beside Marshall's truck. 'We really need to get him out of the water as fast as we can, it's getting dark fast.' Marshall said. 'I saw, Skye does have a lamp under her helicopter so hopefully that can give us an advantage.' Rydr said.

Skye's helicopter was now in the air and all the other pups were in their sea patrol boats. Tims is ticking, Marshall nervously looks at the water. He can't help searching because he has to be ready to treat him, the longer it takes, the more gear Marshall grabs out of his truck.

It's now been five minutes. Time keeps ticking, Skye spots something in the water, Zuma goes over and calls out it's the dog, Zuma brings him to shore. Marshall check for breathing but can't hear anything. he feels the dog's pulse but nothing there either. Marshall starts the CPR and calls out some orders to the others.

(Chest compressions are done 100 to 120 beats per minute, like Marshall, you can find songs that have a rhythm in this exact beat, like the song a a a a staying alive, staying alive. I think never gonna give you up has the right beat frequency to. chest compressions are done the same way on dogs as they are done on humans. I don't know why I put this in here, maybe you learn something from it)

Marshall keeps repeating the CPR cycle, Marshall notices that Time has gone by, Chase had set up some lamps so Marshall and Ryder could see what they were doing, it was now almost completely dark. 'How long has it been?' Marshall asked, still doing the CPR. Ryder looks at his pup pad and says: '45 minutes.'

Marshall looked at the unconscious Barley and knew what decision he had to make, there was no saving him, the CPR had failed the young dog. Marshall looks at Ryder and says: 'nothing we can do, call it off.' Marshall said. Ryder nodded and typed something on his pup pad. 'I'll call someone to pick the pup up, you go home.' Ryder told Marshall. Marshall nodded and put everything back in his truck.

Marshall started his EMT truck up and for him, that's the moment when realization hits, another life, gone. Sometimes Marshall wishes he had a time machine, a way to change the outcome, a way to safe another life which is all Marshall wants. But sadly, there is no time machine, no way to change the outcome, you can't try again like in a video game. Tears go down Marshall's face as he drives home. Of course Marshall knows he did everything he possibly could, but the brain always finds a way to put you in an emotional rollercoaster. I did everything, but it wasn't enough. I'm okay, I'm not okay. I can keep going, I need a break. Marshall knows how to deal with this, over the years he has found a way to get out of it the longest. Marshall walks to his pup house and closes the door, time to calm down.

Some of the other pups see the saddened pup walk into his pup house. 'Shouldn't we talk to him?' Rubble asked. 'You know the rule, don't disturb him for at least two hours, Marshall knows what to do.' Chase told Rubble.

Marshall laid down, then he felt something under him. A little piece of paper was stuck to the floor of Marshall's pup house. On the paper, something was written in shaky handwriting but Marshall recognized the name at the bottom, Barley. The paper red:

'hey Marshall, if your reading this, you will probably never see me again. I hope you don't know what happened because I don't want to hurt you, you have been an amazing buddy and you helped me have hope for good times. I tried my best to see the best in the world, but I've always seen it different than you, you see it as a world of opportunity, a place you can do what you want and follow your dreams. I though, see it as a horrible place, a place with people that hurt you, make you see the worst in yourself, a place filled with hatred, I've seen the news. A place I cannot find enough to compensate for all the bad things . I really tried to find a dream to follow, but I couldn't find a way out. I just didn't want to come back to my owner, I will do what I have to do. Thanks for being my friend, my only friend. I hope you are able to continue to follow your dreams, do your best and forget the rest.'

More tears came down Marshall's face. These are the stories that stick with you for so long if not your entire life, the stories you wish to forget but can't get out of your head. The stories that you can cry about everything you think of it, even years later. Suicide is a growing problem in the us, and the whole world. I read and hear about more and more people struggling to find any compensation for the bad times in their life. If you red this story and you feel like I'm talking to you, go talk to someone, if you feel like you can't talk to anyone you know because you don't trust them go give suicide help a call.
