Looks like Kosmo is alone. He blinks around the room, eyes still caked in sleep until he blinks it out. A sniff, then two and he already catches the scent of his partner. He didn't say good morning or even give him his morning scratch!

Well he'll track down Keith and fix that. And distract him from the stress of his boring duties in the meantime.

Kosmo leaves the flat, letting the door lock behind him. He can just teleport inside again, and in fact could do the same to eventually get to Keith. But there's something nice about walking around the massive ship, exploring new areas each day.

He tries sniffing the air again and not good, the scent trail is gone, covered up by that weird "lemon" smell humans always use. They must have used that strong stuff to clean the hallways again, which means that Keith left their room well before the scheduled cleaning time. He shakes his head. Looks like he'll have to start sleeping on Keith's chest again to keep him in place.

He passes by the door to the other Paladins' places and stops in front of what he knows is the Princess's. He considers teleporting inside — it's fun to mess with her, she's so animated — but then the door slides open and her mice scurry out.

Kosmo snorts. 'She left you behind too?'

They all look down, and Platt softly squeaks 'She didn't even greet us.'

He huffs and jerks his head backward. 'Get on then and we'll track her down.'

The mice waste no time clambering up his leg and onto his back. He pads away toward where he remembers the mess hall to be, a good place to start.

Keith and Princess aren't around but a familiar face scampers through the tables and people until he skids up to them. 'Hey! Kosmo! Hey!'

'Hello, I see you're keeping your partner on her toes as usual.'

Running behind him is the little Paladin Pidge, and surrounding her are those fluffy things everyone calls caterpillars. "Bae Bae, I told you to stop running around here!"

In true Bae Bae fashion he completely ignores her and keeps chatting. 'Where's Keith? You're always with him! Oh the mice are here too, hey where's the pretty princess lady?'

Plachu squeaks up. 'You're so loud! And we can't find her either.'

'But can't you do that mind thing with her?' Bae Bae asks.

'Of course we tried that! But she has to be receptive to it first and she's not paying attention right now.'

A hand rests on Kosmo's head and he looks away from the others to see a smiling and crouching Pidge. "Awww, you're looking for Keith right? And if the mice are with you, they can't find Allura either I bet. Not sure where she went but I did see Keith with Shiro in the boardroom about 20 minutes ago, though I don't know if he's still there."

Finally a clue, and he wishes he could thank her properly for it but no mental connection between them yet it seems. Just then the caterpillars begin to circle around Pidge's head before flashing their markings. Chuchule squeals in response 'Oh thank you, we'll check there for Allura next!'

Kosmo lets Pidge scratch his head a bit more, licks her face in response (which makes her laugh), then sets off with the mice again. The caterpillars and Bae Bae wish them good luck, the latter earning a shush from Pidge for barking so loud this early again.

'The greenhouse is a bit after the boardroom, so we'll check there for Princess after Keith.' The mice chirp their agreement and Kosmo teleports to save time.

He arrives at the entrance and walks through the sliding door. There are in fact two men in the room, but neither are Keith, and Kosmo can't help but let out a frustrated whimper.

Both of them look up from those datapad things that Keith is always glued to, and one gasps, coming forward to kneel in front of him. "Hey there buddy. Can't find Keith?" Kosmo definitely remembers him as Curtis, because he gives the best belly rubs when they're on the bridge together.

The other one with glasses speaks, and the name Adam comes to him after only a moment, since he tends to hang around Keith and Shiro a lot. "I'm sure he's somewhere around here. I wish Mittens was as devoted, but she just naps in my bed all day instead."

The calico cat in Adam's lap yawns, leaning into the scratches behind her ear. 'I don't get why you're going through the trouble of finding him. Just wait for him to come to you. Humans can't leave us alone for long.'

The pitbull laying next to Curtis's chair lifts her head and sniffs at Mittens. 'They all miss their partners, nothing wrong with that.'

'Partners?' Mittens finally opens her eyes and looks right at Kosmo. 'Oh, the mice are here too.'

Kosmo feels them stiffen up and huffs. 'Don't tell me she tried to eat you guys.'

'She sure did! It was so scary, but luckily Betty saved us.' Kosmo imagines Chulatt is hiding behind Platt as he speaks.

"Adam, could you tell your cat to stop intimidating the mice?"

"Please, she won't try to eat them again after Allura chewed her out and I took her treats away for a month."

'Ugh, it was torture. Not worth that or risking Princess's wrath again.'

Betty ignores Mittens and walks up to Curtis instead. 'I hope you all find your buddies soon.'

'Thank you.' And Kosmo headbutts Curtis on the shin as a silent thanks, which earns him a wave and bye from both men, before heading back out.

Once outside, Kosmo recalls Allura and teleports to the greenhouse. There's a few people walking through the area and they predictably coo and awe at him. He's still adjusting to the constant attention, but having so many people care about him is nice too. Along with the Paladins, it helps to fill the void left by his parent's untimely death just before he met Keith and Krolia.

"Prepare yourself fiend!"

Kosmo startles and whips around, expecting a threat, but perched on a shrub branch in front of him is a large greenish bird. The mice angrily squeak at him.

'That wasn't funny Pepper!'

'Yeah you big jerk!'

'Pick on someone your own size!'

Pepper cackles in response, in that strange, almost human-like voice, before speaking normally. 'You should have seen your faces, they were hilarious!'

Kosmo finds his voice again and growls. 'It'll be more hilarious when I find your bird house and tear it up.' He's bluffing but it gets a rise out of the parrot anyway and he puffs up his feathers and squawks.

"What is all this commotion about?"

'It's the Princess, time to scram!"

At the sound of the voice calling out, the mice on his back begin to fidget around and squeal. The Princess pushes aside a large branch just in time to see the parrot fleeing deeper into the greenhouse. "You again? I have never met a pet so loud before—oh! You came to find me?"

Between her and Kosmo closing the distance, the mice are able to climb up her arm and sit on her shoulders. "Oh no, you were trying to contact me? I am so sorry." She smiles and reaches out to pet Kosmo's head, and he leans into her touch, pleasantly surprised by her reaction. "Thank you very much for bringing them to me. Ah, and if you are looking for Keith, he and Shiro just went to the bridge."

He gently headbutts her shin (he can't wait until he's able to send random thoughts to her) and then says his goodbyes to the mice, who all wave and thank him, before teleporting to the bridge.

Shiro is standing at the center station, pointing to what looks like a large holographic star system map. "Maybe we should comb over the Revelt quadron again, there was a recently reported sighting of—Kosmo?"

Beside him is Keith, who furrows his eyebrows. "Wait, Kosmo was sighted?—oh, oh hey!" Keith turns around and smiles, holding his arms open.

Seeing his partner again makes Kosmo giddy with joy and before he realizes, he's standing on his hind legs to properly embrace Keith back. He sends a simple thought to Keith, 'I missed you,' and mentally laughs when Keith startles. He's still not used to their shared link, it seems.

But Keith can be full of surprises too. He responds through the link with a soft "I missed you too boy," and Kosmo is suddenly full of love.

I mentioned before about a story that introduced my mental link headcanon with Kosmo and Keith and this is it! Ever since I wrote this fic it has influenced my other works so sorry for the sudden inclusion of that lol

Unrelated note but I had friends say this fic reads like a bedtime story or a Winnie the Pooh book, which are like the biggest compliments to me 3
