After they all had dinner and their roommates scattered to different ends of the house he approached her.
"Hey you got a minute?"
She thought it was a weird question, considering they were probably going to end up spending the evening talking anyways.
"Sure, what's up?"
"Maybe we should take a walk," he suggested.
She figured she wanted to tell him what she learned in privacy anyways and agreed. She went to her room to change and put on her shoes and returned a few minutes later to find him pacing in the living room. Maybe something was wrong, she worried. She followed him out onto the main path and they kept walking closely, but not talking until he reached the beach. The loud waves would be good for this covert conversation.
"I found out more about Widemore."
"Me too," she admitted.
"What? How?"
"Amy."
He scoffed, once again thinking how terrible Horace was at keeping things under wraps around here.
"Alright, tell me what you know."
"I know he was getting schematics of our technology, but she didn't say what kind."
"Well shit, that's more than I know. Although I think I might know the technology."
She looked at him to continue as they kept walking along the beach.
"Horace took me to one of the stations. I think they are doing something with the chemicals out there."
"The Tempest," she said very matter of fact, suddenly realizing what this meant.
He looked up surprised (even though he shouldn't be).
"Yeah. It sounds like you should be telling me what's going on here."
"The Tempest contains dangerous chemical compounds…the same ones Ben uses in the future to eradicate the Dharma population."
James looked at her trying to consider if this kerfuffle could have anything to do with the future. She seemed to be doing the same.
"Do you think…," he said, not needing to fully voice the question.
"I don't know. Maybe…maybe Daniel was wrong about not being able to alter the future. Maybe Widemore…"
"Yeah, but we are currently frying his brain, so how could he…"
"Maybe he already managed to steal other information before they caught them," she offered.
He hadn't thought of that. Too bad she wasn't she running this place he thought for a moment.
"Well only one way to find out."
"How's that?"
"It sounds like we might have to pull a Sayid on his ass and get some information before we release him back into the wild."
She frowned. She didn't like the sound of him spending any more time with Widemore than necessary.
"James."
He stopped walking to face her.
"Yeah?"
"Just promise me you'll be careful."
"I will be."
"No I mean it. Please remember who you're dealing with."
"I promise I'll be careful, but we gotta find out what he knows."
She agreed with a nod.
"There's one other thing. Horace is all worried we're gonna spill the beans about the Hydra and Widemore. So just be sure to keep things on the down low."
"No problem."
He smiled at her before they resumed walking back to the house.
"Why the hell does Amy know?"
"Apparently she and Horace have been seeing a lot of each other lately."
"Gross."
She laughed. "James."
"What, you don't think he's gross?"
"I mean, she seems happy. Who am I to judge. The heart wants what the heart wants," she joked.
"If you ever go out with a guy like that I'll kill him."
She grew quiet, considering his words. Suddenly she was worried that maybe she had been completely wrong about him. Was he just being a big brother? Damn-it. She shouldn't have said anything to Amy. She nervously chuckled back at his statement as they walked along.
"That'll never happen," she added.
"Good."
He snuck a glance at her as they walked side by side in the moonlight. He thought about reaching down and grabbing her hand, but they were back to the house before he could work up the nerve. Feeling defeated, he followed her into the house. After freshening up and changing clothes they met back at their usual spots for the night. They had their books in hand, but their minds were far away from the plots that either contained.
