"What are you doing here?" Kate sighed. When another shopper pushed their cart down the aisle, she stepped closer to Jack. He took advantage, his hand on the small of her back.
"I need to talk to you," he said softly when it was just the two of them in the aisle.
"Haven't you gotten the point? I don't want to talk to you. I don't care what it is!"Even in her anger, Kate felt the heat from his hand burning into her; she was on the verge of melting at the simple touch. The night together had pushed her feelings back to the surface. Not only had she remembered why she fell in love with him, she fell in love with him all over again. She had already been disappointed with Jack's behavior, she was appalled when Spencer recounted their conversation. Jack hadn't wanted to fix things with her; he hadn't wanted them to explore their feelings. He wanted to one-up Spencer. He wanted to show his dominance regardless of how it affected Kate. He had humiliated her, exposing her secrets without a second thought. She had been betrayed by the only person she trusted not to.
So, when he showed up at Aaron's daycare pickup day after day, she ignored him. She ignored his calls and texts; if it hadn't been for Aaron she would have blocked him. Jack had even shown up to the house once after Aaron was asleep. Kate ignored him, knowing that he could see her car and knew she was home.
"You're starting to scare me," she whispered. She saw all the signs of exhaustion displayed on his face; her heart sank, knowing she was the cause of it. He just looked… broken.
"No. I'm not. You know I'd never hurt you, Kate. You know you can trust me."
"I used to trust you. That was my mistake." She watched as Jack ran a hand through his hair, his eyes watery and on the verge of breaking. She knew she had to tell him, rip the bandaid off completely. Otherwise, she'd just reopen the wound; this was the ethical way. "Jack," she sighed "we decided to push up the wedding."
"What?" His lower lip began to quiver, breaking her heart. She'd never seen him look so defeated.
"This weekend." Her voice was shaky, she was surprised to hear the words come out of her own mouth. It was such an automatic respond, void of any emotion. Both Kate and Jack took note.
"Why, Kate? Why are you doing this?"
"Spencer… we…we just thought we don't really need a fancy wedding. I don't have family or friends, really." The hurt in Kate's eyes infuriated Jack immediately. He knew that look.
"That's what he told you?" Jack demanded. "You know what he told me?"
"Enough!" Kate's voice was as loud as she could go without causing a scene. Kate walked away, moving the cart to block Jack from chasing after her.
Jack pushed the cart with a frustrated grunt before pulling out his cell phone. "Sayid? I need a favor."
After a minute of dead air, Sayid spoke. "Well?"
"I need you to help me kidnap Kate."
"Jack, you've got to let her go. She's with—"
"She can't be with him. She can't marry him."
"I'm afraid that isn't your choice."
"Do you remember when Kate and I started dating? You told me that you'd do anything for Kate."
"I know what I said," Sayid said, his voice calm.
"This is for Kate."
"She'll never forgive you," Sayid warned.
"I know. I'm never going to earn her forgiveness but if I don't stop this, she'll never forgive myself. I can't let that happen to her, even if that means losing her forever."
"I'll take care of it and be in touch."
