"1112 Field Rd. Step on it."

The cab driver was quite curious and attempted to make small talk several times. He looked in his rear view mirror at us. "Did your lady drink too much or somethin'?"

"No, sir." I grumpily stated.

A little while passed before he decided to open his fat mouth again.

"Not in the mood to talk tonight, Commissioner?" The driver smirked.

I leered at him, my head back against the head rest.

Usually, I would've been more upset that the driver had recognized me, but the events of the night made me especially tired. "You must be mistaken. I'm not the commissioner."

"I recognize your face from public addresses on television and the badge on your chest speaks for itself."

Looking down, my eyes gazed at the shiny gold badge. It shines even at night. I picked fluff off my coat, still in my arms.

" It's strange, I didn't expect you to be in such company." His eye darted to Kay, who stared out the opposite window.

"I paid you to drive- not talk. "

"Enjoying spirits and women- typical cop."

At this moment my hand brushed where I usually kept my pistol- my eyes grew wide realizing it wasn't there.

Damn...

The rest of the ride was silent.

We reached the front gates of my manor and I slipped the cabby an extra twenty dollars to keep his mouth shut.

"Whatever! Have a great night, lover boy." His raspy laugh turned cough was abruptly stopped when I slammed the door.

"What an ass." Kay mumbled.

"Hold this like an umbrella over yourself." I handed my jacket over to her.

As she did so, I picked her up and carried her to the front door which was covered by an awning.

"I could've walked."

"Don't be silly, you don't have shoes. "

As we walked in the front door, I turned on the lights.

"Wow." Kay exclaimed," this place is massive. "

"I'll get you a change of clothes, come with me." I led her upstairs to one of the many bedrooms. I got her one of my shirts and some trousers to sleep in.

"Do you have a family?" She asked, looking around the room.

Admittedly, I was quite hesitant to tell her about my personal- sensitive matters. No one cares to talk about it with me.

Kay gazed around, spinning in a circle. Her Hazel eyes glittered looking at the room's interior. Ornate sage green wallpaper, windows that reach the floor, a floor length mirror and a private full bathroom.

"Uh, no. I don't have anyone," I glanced down," I lost both of my parents a while ago, and inherited their home."

"Oh. I see. This is a pretty big home for a single man."

I nodded, super tired and frankly in no mood to chat, glancing at my watch it said 2:00 a.m.

"Welp, I'll see you later on today, we'll figure out this whole mess." Slicking back my hair and sighing.

I went to leave, she followed me to the door of the room and grabbed my arm.

My heart skipped a beat.

" Thank you for your kindness, sir. You're my hero."

I chuckled and rubbed the back of my neck,"Well, you're welcome. I didn't expect anything like this happening tonight."

Kay took one more look at Onyx before she shut the door softly.

The next couple of months were relatively quiet. I was able to help find a place for Kay to live, a small townhouse on the outskirts of the city. She takes the subway to work. She's my personal secretary so we can ensure her safety.

Our sister city, Midway, is still sending us backup when needed, and today we are welcoming our own forensic specialist who will be a big help with homicide cases.

Ring!

Ring!

Ring!

I must've fallen asleep at my desk again.

"Commissioner Hadee of Midway is here with the forensic specialist, Mr. Finn."

"Huh? Oh right!" I groggily yawn and grab the papers I slept on.

Facing my desk, I start practicing my speech about how Bay City strives for peace and safety for all citizens while mid-stretch.

Commissioner Hadee cleared her throat walking in on me mid-stretching.

"Commissioner Onyx Finn." Her voice demanded respect- it was stern and she never put up with nonsense.

As I turn around, in walks the new forensic scientist.

My brow furrowed, she seemed really familiar.

"Ahem, sorry about that. Seemed to have a tickle in my throat," I stated, taking Commissioner Hardee's hand with a firm shake.

"always good to see you ma'am."

She smiled warmly," Same to you, Sir." Then gestures to the tall woman next to her.

The woman stood about 4 inches taller than Finn, she was quite thin, and in her late 20's. Her hair cut to medium length and blonde. She had a long nose with slender wire framed glasses and green eyes.

He stood up straighter. She was nearly 6 foot tall.

With a slight smile she stated,"It's very nice to meet you again, Finn."
