Later in the day Blake and Holly returned to Cedars. Like a little girl Blake hung onto her mother's arm, neither sure who was to be holding the other up. They approached the ICU waiting room with trepidation.

"I think we need to check in" Holly indicated. She also noticed a uniformed police man sitting in a chair by the door. Her eyes narrowed. She knew Ed had yet to be arrested, but didn't mention this to Blake.

"Hello, we're here to see Roger Thorpe."

The receptionist checked her computer. "Are you a relative?" She asked.

"I am his daughter, and she's my mother" Blake answered around it.

"Names?"

"Blake Marler and Holly Bauer" She muttered her mother's last name.

The receptionist entered them into the computer. "He can have no more than two visitors at a time for no more than 20 minutes up to three times daily." She handed them hanging tags with the letter V in red on them. "Make sure these are visible throughout your stay. Deposit them in this box when you leave. Do you have any questions?"

"I do" Holly raised a hand slightly. "Has Roger's wife been by to see him? Or is she there now?"

The receptionist looked over her glasses and pursed her lips. "If she were there now you wouldn't be going back."

Holly nodded. Blake pulled her to the door where they waited to be buzzed back. "He's in the 3rd door on the right" the pair were advised.

Slowly they proceeded up the dimly lit, but wide hallway. They could hear the whooshing of respirators, the beeping of monitors, and groans coming from either side of them. Blake grabbed Holly's arm and squeezed even more tightly. Holly pat her hand. "He won't be here long' Holly assured her.

They were surprised when they went in. Blake had expected Roger, who just had a portion of his skull removed to be lying flat, but he was raised with his eyes closed. As was the case the night before his hands lay quietly at his side.

Holly went to the far side of the bed and gently kissed his forehead. Blake sat on the chair closest to the door and took his hand. "Hi Daddy. I brought Mom with me" she said softly. She felt him squeeze her hand.

"Mom, he squeezed my hand!" She said animatedly.

"He did that last night when I was with him too. He knows we're here."

"Daddy" Blake sighed. "I tried to reach Jenna, but I couldn't get her. I know you wanted her. I'm sorry."

He squeezed her hand harder and groaned.

"The same thing happened last before his surgery" Holly whispered, looking at the monitors though they seemed to remain stable.

"Roger. I called the police to arrest Ed. He can't get away with doing this to you."

Roger groaned again.

"Mom, I think that's enough. Let's let him rest" Roger held her hand as tightly as he could, which wasn't very considering his strength before the accident.

The pair spent the remainder of their visit in silence until a doctor entered the room. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know Mr. Thorpe had visitors. I wanted to check his vital signs and check his dressings. I can come back" He offered.

Blake stood and reached out a hand. "I'm Mr. Thorpe's daughter, Blake, and this is my mother, Holly" She indicated with a hand. "If you don't mind checking Daddy now perhaps you can give us an update." Blake asked hopefully.

The young doctor took her hand and shook it, smiling as he did. He had obviously missed her wedding ring. "Mr. Thorpe is very lucky, if I were in his shoes, I'd want to recover quickly at home surrounded by the two of you"

Holly cleared her throat. He looked bashful and cleared his.

"Alright, Mr. Thorpe as you know suffered multiple injuries. The pressure in his skull increased as he the swelling in his brain increased…."

"Excuse me doctor, we know all of this. Could you give us an update since the surgery?" Holly asked.

"Sure. Since his surgery the pressure on his brain has decreased significantly. He is on two different broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent infection. His ankle and femur have been pinned and set. If he recovers from the brain injury, he will need months of PT in order to walk again."

Blake held a hand up, nearly to his chest. "Excuse me, if he recovers from his brain injury? The doctor last night seemed confident that he would. Now you're saying there is a chance he won't?" Her hands caught her tears as she held her head in them.

The doctor looked between a shocked Holly and a distraught Blake. "Ma'am, I don't mean to upset you. I just want to prepare you. Your father is not a young man."

"He is only fifty-four!" Holly insisted.

"Be that as it may, he is not twenty-five. Even then I'm not sure I'd be willing to gamble with recovery odds. You're correct, he could fully recover with limited deficits, or he could have sustained brain damage that we aren't aware of yet. Now I'm not trying to upset either of you, we will know more when he regains consciousness. Perhaps I'm wrong, and in this case, I hope I am." He handed Blake a card with his name on it. "Please call me if you have any questions or concerns. I will be back to check on Mr. Thorpe later."

He left the room without any additional conversation. Blake turned the card over in her hand.

"Daniel St. John. He must be new; I've never heard of him before."

Holly inspected the card as Blake passed it to her. "I'll have to ask Ed about him tonight."

Blake raised an eye brow. "You're going back to him then?

Holly smacked her forehead with an open palm. "No, I just forgot myself for a moment."

With their twenty minutes long up Blake and Holly headed back to Ross' house.

"I think I'm going to go lie down" Blake stretched and informed her mother. "I will go back to the hospital tonight after dinner, unless I hear something first."

Holly pecked her daughter on the cheek. "I love you. I'm going back to my house. Please call me if you hear anything." Holly hated making Blake be the go between for news on Roger, but given that they were divorced there was no official way to be added to the official loop.

As she was driving Holly decided to drive past the Bauer house. She slowed to a crawl, Ed's car was in the driveway, but there was no police activity. She was starting to become annoyed. No one liked Roger, not even the police, but that didn't mean that his case should be ignored. Holly pulled her car in behind Ed's, slamming the door when she got out. She proceeded to the back door which was not only unlocked but opened.

She stepped into the kitchen; it was empty. "Ed" She called out laying her purse on the table and her coat over the chair at the end of it. She listened, but it was silent.

Slowly she went to the living room. The television was on, but no one was watching it. Picking up the remote she turned it off, tossing the instrument on the couch. "Ed" She called out again, but was met with silence. She was starting to become uneasy and a bit guilty. Had the police come and arrested him? Had they been the ones to leave the television on and the door opened.

Suddenly she heard footsteps coming from the stairs. Holly turned, expecting to see Ed, but instead saw Lillian. Lillian's eyes grew wide when she saw Holly standing in the living room.

"Lillian?" Holly cocked her head "What on Earth are you doing here, further, why were you upstairs?" Holly's eyes narrowed.

Lillian licked her lips and looked back from where she came. "I uhm, I uh, I came to check on Ed. I heard he was in the hospital the other night, and I wanted to see how he was doing."

Holly crossed her arms under the breasts and above her belly. Doing so accentuated both. "And you felt the need to do so in my bedroom?" Holly demanded.

"No, it's not what it looks like. I let myself in like I always do…." She stopped talking and pointed towards Holly. "Oh my God, you are pregnant?"

Holly waved her off. "What do you mean by always do?"

Lillian descended the remaining stairs and stood firmly on the tile below. "I think I should be going Holly. Ed should explain what I mean by that."

Holly looked upwards. Here she was wracked with guilt over her sleeping with Roger one night when it appeared that Lillian had been sleeping with Ed since before Maureen found out about them. "Get out, get out of my house!" She pointed to the door with her finger.

Lillian stepped backwards into the wall as she tried to make her escape. Slowly, not taking her hands off of it she guided herself along it until she reached the closet. With one hand she turned the knob, turning herself only to grab her purse and coat. "Holly, I am sorry. I truly am." Lillian said quietly before she slipped out the front door.

When Lillian was gone Holly ascended the stairs. Michelle's room remained dark and empty, much to her relief. In the room she shared with Ed however, she found him not in the bed but on top of it. He was fully dressed with the exception of his shirt being unbuttoned to his pants.

"Lillian, you came back." He sounded half asleep.

"No, she did not, but I did" Holly stood over him like the giant Gulliver during his travels.

"Holly?" It was more a question than an observation.

"Who did you expect Ed? Did you hope Lillian would bring you a martini and a cigarette to enjoy the afterglow?"

Ed pushed himself up on his elbows, no longer laying down but not sitting upright either.

"Holly, believe me, I didn't do it." He said falling back down. He appeared to be passed out Holly surmised.

"Didn't do what Ed? Have another affair with Lillian? Didn't run Roger down? Didn't get drunk before 3 p.m. today. Tell me!" She yelled

She wanted to slap him, but couldn't. Instead, she got on her knees and removed his shoes. She flipped his legs up on the bed and rolled him on his side. When she stepped back her hand formed a fist. She shook it over him.

"Damn you Ed Bauer, damn you Lillian, damn you Roger, damn you all" She collapsed onto the floor, heavy warm tears falling from her eyes as she lay on the carpet next to the bed.
