Jenna was sitting by Roger's side, holding his hand when there was a knock on the door jam. She looked up and smiled sweetly.

"Yes" she said.

Detective Leavey waked into the room.

Jenna stood "Is there a problem officer?" She tried not to sound too anxious.

"It's detective actually. I was hoping to ask Mr. Thorpe a few questions."

Jenna put her tongue on the bottom of her front teeth. "Well, as you can see my husband is in no condition to answer anyone's questions, including mine" She smiled warmly.

"Well then do you mind if I ask you a few questions?" Detective Leavy asked.

"I don't suppose this could wait until after Roger is out of the intensive care unit?"

"Ordinarily ma'am, I'd say yes, but given the severity of Mr. Thorpe's injuries we are looking at this case as less of a hit and run and more of an attempted murder."

Jenna's hands flew to her mouth. "Attempted murder? I'm sure you're wrong. This was surely an accident."

"Yes ma'am, but if it's all the same to you I'd like to ask you a few questions."

"Oh, all right, but keep it brief. I'd like to give my husband as much peace and quiet as he can be afforded in this hospital." She spat out the last word.

"Thank you, I appreciate your time. Would you please come with me Mrs. Thorpe"

Detective Leavey put out a hand to escort her out of the room.

"I'm not going anywhere; I want to stay with my husband." She argued.

"Ma'am, I have to inform you that you are a suspect in your husbands hit and run. I can process or clear you much faster if you come with me."

Jenna thew a hand up in the air and brought it down hard on her hip. "Fine, alright, but I'm going to get my bag first. Second, I'm calling our attorney. This is outrageous."

"I understand ma'am, you are welcome to contact your attorney and have him present as we question you. At this time, you are only a person of interest and haven't been arrested, but you should have an attorney present with you."

"Fine." Jenna agreed. She bent over and kissed Roger's cheek gently. "I'll be back soon darling. I promise."

Hours later Ed and Holly strolled into the police station. Ed looked around nervously.

"Can I help you sir?" A uniformed woman asked.

"Yes, I'd like to make a report regarding the Thorpe hit and run. I've been trying to reach the detective in charge, but I was told he is either away from his desk, or that he's busy every time I call so I thought maybe I could come down and make a statement." Ed was sweating and nervous. Holly took his hand in hers and leaned against him.

"Detective Leavey is with someone right now, but if you'd like to take a seat, I'm sure he will be with you shortly, Mr…"

"Doctor actually, last name is Bauer."

"Alright, I will let the detective know you're here. Have a seat"

Ed ushered Holly to a bank of chairs reminiscent of those at the hospital.

"You don't have to do this Ed, you're not even sure you're remembering the events of Blake's wedding correctly. You could be wrong" Holly sighed.

"I don't think I am Holly, but if I am, we'll soon find out and then my part in all of this will be over" He lifted her hand and kissed the back of it gently.

Holly laid her head on his shoulder while Ed leaned his head on to hers. "It's ironic you know."

"What is?" Holly whispered sleepily.

"I've completely upended our marriage, yet this is the calmest and relaxed I've been in months."

"That makes one of us" She inhaled. "I still need to tell Roger about this" She ran her hand along the swell of her abdomen.

"What if you didn't Holly? I mean, what if we just let it be. Let me raise the child. I already think of him as my son." He took her hand in his. "It won't be like it was with Blake. I will have known the truth from the start. We won't ever have to tell Roger."

Holly tightened her grip on Ed's hand, as well as closing her eyes. "Ed, I love you, but let's be honest about why we came together. I was there for Michelle, and you were trying to get over the loss of Maureen. I was comfortable like that old blue terry cloth robe of yours. It's not your first choice, but because it's always there, just waiting, all warm and broken in you grab it off of the hook. You grab it only because you can, not because you want to. You didn't want a wife Ed, you wanted a warm body in the bed next to you whom you didn't need to impress, and someone to get Michelle off to school in the morning and like that old robe, I filled those needs not because I was your first choice but because I was simply there. If you really loved me, you would have told me about your drinking and we would have conquered it together"

Ed pulled away "and if you really loved me, you wouldn't have slept with Roger"

" Oh come on Ed, that's not fair. I didn't sleep with him out of spite. I slept with him because I needed to get him out of my system. Much like you and alcohol I am addicted to him."

He pat her knee. "I know, I'm sorry. As much as I hate to admit it, you're right. At least there is a twelve-step program for me, I think it will take you many more to get Roger out of your orbit."

Just then Detective Leavey and Jenna Bradshaw appeared in the waiting area. Ed stood, but it was Holly whom Jenna clapped eyes on.

"Well, well, if I were paranoid, I'd think you were following me" Jenna said bitterly.

"Dr. Bauer, I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I've been busy this morning" He indicated to Jenna.

"Do you have some time now? If you do, I'd like to talk to you about the night Roger Thorpe was struck down." Ed informed him.

Jenna's eye brow went up. Slowly she turned toward the pair of men, taking Holly momentarily out of her cross hairs.

"That actually saves me a trip to your home, Dr. Bauer. Would you like to come back to the conference room with me?"

Ed shook his head. "Might Holly join us. She is my wife" Ed requested. Leavey shrugged. "Sure, I don't see why not."

"I'd like to come too, Detective" Jenna said.

Holly stood and wrapped her arms around one of Ed's, but it did little good. Jenna's eagle eyes zoomed in on her disappearing waist.

"Well, well, Holly, it looks like everyone in this room has a little secret don't they. Only in your case it's getting larger by the day I'd presume. Tell me, were there literal fireworks going off when that got its start?"

"Jenna, now isn't the time or the place" Ed hissed, protecting Holly.

Jenna gave a half smile. "You're so right Dr. Bauer. Besides, I best get back to my husband."

Leavy reached a hand out to guide the pair to the conference room where Ed would explain to Leavy the fragments of what he remembered that fateful night when Roger Thorpe was left for dead."

Ed put a hand on the small of Holly's back ushering her up the hall. The detective offered them both something to drink, but both declined. Holly sat on one side of the long table while Ed sat on the other. Leavy chose the chair at the end between the two.

"Dr. Bauer, you are here of your own free will correct, no one has coerced you into coming in today, correct?"

"That's correct. I just want to fill in the blanks in my own mind I suppose."

The detective rubbed his chin with his hand. "I must tell you Dr. Bauer, at one point you were high on our suspect list."

"I gave you ample reason to suspect me" Ed agreed.

"Ok, so what can you tell me?" Leavy asked, flipping open Roger's case file.

"I was in the parking lot at the same time Roger was struck, or around that time I suppose. I remember seeing a woman in a dark green SUV. I called out her name, but she ignored me. I recognized the woman, but was too drunk to do anything about it. I saw Roger milling about the lot. I was going to go confront him for kissing my wife, but I heard voices calling for me, so I walked away. I didn't want to see anyone, so I walked away. I had no idea she was going to hit him. Hell, had I been there she may have hit me instead."

Leavey pulled a surveillance photo from the file. "Is this the woman?"

Ed picked up the photo, started at it intently, closed his eyes and handed it to Holly. "Yes, that's her"

Holly gasped. She hadn't believed Ed when he told her his suspicions.

"Can you identify her by name Dr. Bauer? It's imperative since Mr. Thorpe is unable to, and since Mrs. Thorpe was in fact in England at the time of the accident, we have no other eye witnesses."

Ed looked at the photo again. "Yes, I can. That is Lillian Raines"

Leavey took the photo. "Thank you, Dr. Bauer, Mrs. Bauer." He pushed himself back from the table. "I appreciate you coming in. We suspected Mrs. Raines when we saw the footage from the cameras. I do have a question though Dr. Bauer."

"Go on, I'll answer anything." Ed said.

"We have the two of you on camera arguing shortly before Mr. Thorpe was struck. We now know how you got the bump on your head. She slugged you pretty hard causing you to fall and hit your head."

Ed shrugged. "I'm not sure detective, you'd have to ask her."

"We will, I'm going to have an arrest warrant issued for her today. Thanks again for your help. I'd like to stay and fill in some more blanks such as motive, but I need to go see the judged." Leavey rushed out of the room leaving Holly and Ed behind.
