Chapter 1- Introduction: The killing games!

The sun was shining as the students from Hopes Peak academy met up on the first island's beach. Usami the pink rabbit teacher had prepared everyone a swimsuit, and although some of the students decided not to change many of the others took this opportunity. Laughter and the sound of the waves filled the air. Nagito ran a hand through his hair with a smile. He looked over at the beach to see Hajime looking over everyone. He wanted to invite him to swim but then noticed the black clouds rolling in. "Just my luck." Nagito hissed as he made his way back to shore, noticing the fuzzy broadcast that had everyone's attention.

After being introduced to Monokuma and his Monobeasts, Nagito hung back at the park when everyone dispersed. The bear noticed him and walked up with a questioning expression, "You don't seem as tense as the others. Nagito was it?" He nodded and bent down to eye level for his headmaster. "Yes, I'm Nagito Komaeda; and you're Monokuma?" He held out a hand as he introduced himself. The bear took the hand with a malice smile, "You are definitely weird, normally students shutter when I mention the killing games." Nagito gave his own smile but it seemed much sweeter as the two stopped shaking. "What do you hope to accomplish?" He questioned. With the same grin the headmaster answered, "Despair, It gives me pleasure to watch the talented rip each other apart." He finished with a laugh before studying the lucky student. "Alright then. It was a pleasure to meet you." Nagito shrugged as he began to walk away. "What a weird kid." Monokuma huffed under his breath before his smile returned.

"Killing games Hu?" Nagito huffed as he laid on the cottage bed. "I know I just met everyone... but to let them fall into despair? No! I have to make them stronger!" Nagito was determined, he hopped up and slipped his hoodie over his shoulders as he ran out to meet everyone at the restaurant.

"I will Guide you all!" Byakuya proclaimed pushing up his glasses. As Mahiru argued with the larger teen, Nagito tried to calm down the red head. When everyone finished talking about the current situation, Byakuya led them all to the ticking timer in the park. Nagito sighed and lightly jumped when Hajime approached him. "Oh? Hello Hajime." He greeted with a warm smile. The other stood besides him and took a moment before speaking, "Do you really think we can over come this?" Nagito ran a hand through his hair nervously as he tried to come up with what to say. "I have hope. Even if someone is ... attacked, we will overcome it and become stronger." Nagito clenched his fists. "You're right." Hajime smiled, making the lucky one turn a slight shade of pink. A smile grew on his own face and happily took Hajime's hands into his own. "There! That's the hope we need." Nagito chuckled as he lightly squeezed the hands. They stayed like that for a few minutes. "We're friends, right Hajime?" Nagito asked as he let go. "I never really thought about it, but sure. As long as you don't try to kill me." Hajime teased nervously. "Never, I don't think I could hurt anyone on purpose. Perhaps myself..." Something clicked in Nagito's head. "See you later Hajime! I have something I need to do!" And with that Nagito left the group to decipher his own thoughts. Not noticing the comedy act playing in the background.

"What if I killed myself? Then maybe it will spark some hope!" Nagito clenched his fist to his chest. "If they can overcome my death then maybe they will have the determination they need to survive! With my luck it should... no it will work!" Nagito found some paper and pens at the supermarket and wrote a note saying that someone will die. He slipped it under Byakuya's door to start the next chain of events. "This will work! Monokuma we will defeat your despair!"

The party was at full swing. Byakuya hung out in the corner but noticed something was off, so he decided to approach Nagito. They began to speak. "Why a lamp? Don't you think the room is bright enough? It feels out of place." Byakuya placed a hand on his chin. "What do you mean? It's just added decorations." Nagito kept his head as he spoke. "You don't plan on smashing any heads with it do you?" Byakuya sneered. "N-no! Of course not! I promise the lamp is fine." The lucky one felt his talent slip as his plan fell out of place. "Just to be safe, I'm going to keep it in the case." The prodigy sighed as he unplugged the lamp and shoved it in the case with all the silverware and other dangerous items. 'Shit, I guess I'll just have to stay closer.' The lucky student bit his lip, not noticing Hajime walking up to him. "Hey Nagito, you did a wonderful job! It looks kinda homey." Hajime smiled. "Oh thank you! I did work hard today! However next time I wish to spend more time with you." The lucky one said sincerely making the other blush lightly. "I would like that." He answered. They began to converse and before Nagito knew it the Ac unit kicked on, knocking out all the lights. 'Shit!' Nagito thought as he practically dove for the table. He felt along the wall and found the table cloth. He heard Kazuichi say he was going to check the fuse box so he had to hurry. He lifted up the table cloth to see the glowing tape and knife. 'Bingo!' He heard footsteps come closer, but he didn't realize a skewer barely missing his chin. A loud cry left his lips when the second jab pierced through his left hand. He withdrew from the table and felt a hand touch his shoulder. "Nagito! Are you alright?" Byakuya asked as he put pressure on the wound. Nagito bit his lip to hold back the pain. "Mikan! We need medical assistance!" Byakuya shouted over everyone's panic. With the night vision goggles, the prodigy watched a figure run under the floorboards. "Nagito, put pressure on your hand. I'm gonna hunt down your attacker." He ordered before leaving the lucky one alone on the floor. Loud crashes could be heard, and when the lights flickered on Mikan distracted the other students with her embarrassing pose.

"Nagito!" Hajime rushed over to the sobbing teen. Blood was all over the lucky ones pants and hands as it continued to drip. "We need Mikan! Someone help her up!" Hajime ordered. Akane licked her lips, "Leave it to me!" She shouted before devouring the rope of meat that tied the nurse down. Mikan hastily crawled over once freed. "Oh my! I'm so sorry Nagito!" She pleaded as she pulled out some heavy duty bandages from her apron. She wrapped his hand up tightly and gave it a tug, earning a grunt. The room felt like it was spinning for Nagito. Hajime held him stable, "Are you alright?" "H-he lost a lot of blood. I'm surprised he is still conscious." Mikan pointed out as the lucky one began to close his eyes. "Nagito!" Hajime shouted as the other lost his senses. "Haji...me" Nagito mumbled as he crumbled into the strong arms that held him.

The covers felt warm as they laid atop Nagito's stirring body. Small hums and morning groans left his mouth as he rose from the pillow. A sharp pain caused Nagito to grab his hand with a yelp. "Does it hurt?" A soft voice called. He swung his head over to his company with a sharp smile. "Chiaki? How nice of you to stop by."

"Nagito please calm down."

He lowered his head with a growl. "I was supposed to die."

"Don't say that!" Chiaki cheered with the most enthusiasm she had ever shown. "You're just as important as everyone else!"

Nagito didn't respond as he continued to sulk. He didn't even notice the gamer approaching him. She lightly placed a hand on his shoulder, creating a warm feeling throughout his body and suddenly his hand no longer ached. He flexed the fingers. "You healed me? H-how?!"

"Hope. Hope makes us stronger Nagito." She smiled.

Nagito's eyes widened as the warm sensation left his body. "But my hope is..."

"Just fine. You wanted to help your friends right?"

"I-I ..." He couldn't find the right words to say so he nodded.

"Then this is your lucky day!" She chimed, "But instead of trying to sacrifice yourself, how about you help them become better people."

Nagito looked away with confusion, "But..."

"Nagito, you wanted your classmates to bring on an Ultimate hope yes?"

A glimmer of light emerged from his eyes. Making her chuckle.

"See this?" Chiaki pulled out Nagito's student handbook and flipped to the student profile page. She clicked on Hajime's and opened it up. Two crystal shown on the screen. "What is that?" Nagtio asked curiously, "Hope fragments. You're friendship with Hajime helped you fight despair." She pulled up her profile and showed him that one appeared on her screen. "And now that we've spent this time together another fragment appeared."

Nagito took the handbook and flipped through the empty pages. "So, these Hope fragments, they will bring on the ultimate hope?"

"And will help you fight Monokuma! You all must work together." She began to yawn.

Nagito chuckled, "Getting tired already?"

"I did just healed your hand. And now it's time for a nap." She started to walk towards the door.

"Wait! How did you heal me?" He reached out to her.

"Gather some more of my hope fragments and perhaps I'll tell you. Till next time." She waved with a wink, leaving the confused boy speechless on the bed. "The Ultimate hope?"
