Nayeli couldn't go back to sleep. Carefully, she slipped out of Liam's room and into the hallway. She debated briefly, then peeked in her mother's room only to find the bed still empty.

Disappointed to not have her mother to talk to, she made her way downstairs to get a drink of water. If she was lucky, maybe Skyler would be awake, and she could talk to her.

She walked into the kitchen and filled a small glass of water in the kitchen. She took a sip and turned, noticing that the light in Skyler's room was still on.

Grateful to have someone to talk to, she knocked softly on Skyler's door. When no answer came, she knocked a little louder, then pressed her ear to the door. There was the sound of music, letting her know that Skyler's radio was on.

Frowning, Skyler gingerly turned the doorknob. Skyler wasn't able to sleep with the television or radio on, saying once that she preferred the quiet, though she never explained why.

"Skyler?" She called out softly, and when she once more received no response, she pushed the door open.

Skyler lay on her bed, book open and laying on her chest.

Nayeli almost closed the door again, but then took a look at Skyler's face. Her normally bright and cheerful friend's face was set in a frown, flushed with a light sheen of sweat on her face.

Concerned, Nayeli approached the bed and laid a hand on the woman's forehead as her mother had done to her on occasion.

Nayeli sucked in her breath at the heat she found there even before she actually touched the skin.

"Skyler," Nayeli said, giving the woman's shoulder a gentle shake.

Receiving no response, Nayeli did the only thing she could think of.

She went into the living room and picked up the telephone. From memory, she dialed the number to the only people she knew would be available and able to help.

"Grandma?" Skyler inquired of the almost angry voice that answered.

"Oh, Nayeli," Diane Maza said, and audibly took a breath. "I'm sorry, Nayeli. What are you doing awake, sweetheart?"

"Grandma," Nayeli said, looking anxiously to the room where Skyler lay. "Grandma, I need help and I don't know where mom is..."
