"…ed help Otis is already dead" Hershel's voice called out it was the first thing I heard from the radio after switching to the farms channel. I noticed the sounds of gunshots in the background.
Not wasting a moment I called out "Assault team we are a go load up!" he may have been an ass to us but they had extended their hospitality to us as well.
It didn't take long to load up thanks to everyone already being in full gear and the three Humvees being kept ready for deployment at a moment's notice. Also backing those up was an armored bank truck and a pair of pickup trucks with M240 machine guns. Piling into the lead Humvee with Shane and Andrea the assault force rooster tailed out onto the driveway moments after the gate had been opened.
Hitting the button on my vest and activating the boom mic on my helmet the entire group listened in.
"Ok people listen up we don't know much about what is going on at the Greene farm other than they are under attack probably walkers but could be other people too. So everyone be sure your vest and helmet are secured. your weapons are ready because anyone we don't know will be a target so far we know for a fact Otis was hit and probably killed so be sure to identify your targets before we start shooting. Jim when we arrive, you and that bank truck will back up to the front door of the house with your doors open get everyone out as fast as you can. Brandon and Shane in the pickups will escort you until you're clear. Merle and Daryl Your Humvees will follow me. We will be a train of death around the house until Jim and the others are clear."
Jim "understood you can count on me"
Brandon "Copy that"
Shane "Ten-four"
Merle "loud and clear officer friendly"
Daryl "I heard that"
Looking behind me at Josh he gave me a thumb up that he heard me. I nodded back at him with a grin. We put the pedal to the metal ignoring the walkers on the road. The pops and booms of gunshots growing ever louder the closer we got.
Me "Hey Herschel, our force is coming up the drive way avoid shooting in our direction." I called into the radio the roar of the engines and the gunfire too loud to hear a reply.
The speeding drive to the farm took only ten minutes but felt like hours. Knowing the Greene's were under attack and that one maybe more were already dead. Turning onto the driveway I see the old flimsy gate had been rammed in and fun over into the ground. Activating the mic once more I call out "Man your weapons and get ready for a fight!"
As we got closer to the farm we could see the twinkling stars of the weapons muzzle flashes. The three Humvees formed a wedge with the two pickups as a tail on either side all surrounding the armored car. As the house came into view we split into two groups.
As per the plan we waited until the first bullet sparked off the reinforced aluminum finder before opening fire. Within a pair of seconds the three Heavy fifty caliber Machine guns let loose a torrent of destruction. Ensuring none of these marauders could escape the four vehicles was the first target. The heavy slugs punched in one side and out the other of the pair of jacked up Cadillac's followed closely by a jeep and a small car in the seconds between the short burst you could hear the panic stricken screams of pain as the heavy rounds punched through their cover and into parts of them.
Turning around still in a column after our first drive-by we go to make another run. As we approach we see the bank truck with a pick-up in front and behind heading back down the drive. This time only being answered by a booming of a shotgun followed by an ear splitting BAM BAM BAM right above my head as Josh sent a short burst back at the shotguns source.
The last active shooter presumed down. "Okay everyone just like we planned come to a stop and dismount it's time to clear the last of them." I called into the radio feeling Josh coming down out of the turret moments later. glancing over I see him tucking the charging handle under his seat good now should anyone try to get in when we dismount they can't fire the gun.
The Humvees come to a sliding stop me and the other drivers making sure to shift into park and turn the Vee's power switch off before we join the gunners who are already out rifles pointed toward the shot up cars. Moving together as teams we move towards the sprawled bodies Josh moving ahead of me as I cover him we lightly kick the dead hands away from the weapons they had been clutching stabbing them with our bayonets as we go.
Josh and I are up to our forth when we find a live but wounded survivor from the look of his stomach a slug had punched through the car he was hiding behind before slamming into him. looking at him I recognize him as the fence kid Ah so this was the full group these guys were from "you know" I say as I put the tip of the bayonet against his forehead causing him to stiffen as much as he can in fear "if you guys had tried to be friendly. The old man of this farm would have welcomed you and you and your buddies would still be alive."
"pl..please oh….god it hurts" he cried "I don't want to die"
"To be killed twice because of you and your groups stupidity" I looked at him after waving josh ahead to check the next body "that is amazing"
"Twice? What do you mea…" his question is cut off as I lean on my rifle pushing the blade into his skull. Idiot
Moving on we don't find any other survivors. Tallying together the numbers from the other two teams we had a total of eleven dead enemies back tracking we start picking up their guns, ammo, and anything else that was useful. Some of the weapons had been hit by the heavy rounds and were useless. Getting back to the Vee I got on the radio to call the others back.
"Hey everyone its Rick, all hostiles are down. We are ok and it's safe to come back now."
Jim's voice came back over my headset "understood on our way back."
It took less than five minutes but the three vehicles pulled up in front of the house and Beth and Maggie jumped out before the truck had even stopped running to where Otis's body lay on the porch where he had fallen his chest and throat ripped open from a heavy round. Looking at the damage bet it was that Howa too bad it had taken a fifty in the bolt assembly.
The girls crouched next to their dead friend. Looking back Jim was helping Herschel down the steps cradling his wounded arm. Before pleasantries could be exchanged however a high-pitched engine sprung to life and a dirt bike leap from the woods not far from the carnage. The bike was carrying two people as everyone opened fire on it the driver franticly swerved and veered every way he could. The passenger was firing a pistol trying their best to get out before our bullets caught up to them.
For a few moments they were successful rapidly approaching the barn and the only decent cover available to them. However moments from safety they hit something in the dirt road and lost control. The passenger slammed into the wall of the barn painting a swath of it blood red. The driver unable to free himself was dragged into and through the barn door. His screams echoed to us moments later before being snuffed out.
Moments later we watched as walkers started shambling out Maggie and Beth who had gotten up from Otis's dead body gasped in horror. Seeing the new threat I called out to the assault team "mount up we are going to cut them down."
Herschel called out "No!" I looked at him "there has to be another way they are our family and frie…" his voice cuts off as he sees his wife
looking toward the barn I see a woman in a night gown covered in blood and dirt fall to her knees and start tearing into the passenger who had slammed into the barns wall glancing back I see him holding his busted shoulder fall to his knees tears in his eyes as he could do nothing but watch as she began eating the dead dude. A few others were also eating on him the majority of the others seeing us started shambling in our direction.
"Conserve the fifty, we don't know when we will find more ammo for them use your rifles." I call out climbing to the top of the Humvee raising my rifle peering through the small ACOG sighting on a walker in a jumpsuit slowly pulling the trigger the rifle jumps and the walker grows a third eye. My shot if followed moments later by another and another as others climbed to the top of their Humvee.
"Take your time and place your shots" I call out to the others "they are far enough away we can take our time and aim carefully"
The popping of the rifles is slow and steady. Scanning the small horde walking our way I see them dropping in ones and twos. Nodding my satisfaction at their accuracy I go back to shooting sighting in on a woman wearing the scraps of what was once a dress. pulling the trigger it goes down sighing I move on to my next target and the next.
By time they are all down I had burned through half my magazine only missing twice. The long range work done my senses comes back to me and… I can hear sobbing behind me. Lowering my rifle to look, I see Beth, Maggie and Herschel all on their knees crying.
Oh that's right the barn walkers were all family or people they knew.
"Im sorry" I said meaning it "I can see they were family as well as close friends but they were gone this allows them to finally be at peace."
They didn't say anything just stared at the barn and the dead that came from it "let's get them inside"
