It was a lovely day. There was no rain, no clouds, and Sonic and Blaze finally got some alone time.
They could talk about anything for hours, and Sonic heard Blaze's adorable giggles when he managed to make her laugh.
And then he asked something that would change their relationship forever.
"Blaze…" Sonic said.
The two of them sat on a bench, and Blaze smiled as she enjoyed the beautiful day. She was almost distracted by all the beauty around them.
"Yes Sonic?"
Now Sonic realized what he was about to ask may not be as easy as he thought. But why? Amy and Rouge always made romance seem so easy.
"I was thinking maybe…." Sonic's hands started to shake from nervousness as he scratched his ear.
Suddenly Blaze turned to the blue hedgehog looking genuinely curious and almost concerned.
"What's wrong Sonic?"
Sonic swallowed and tried to smile.
"I wanted to ask…."
Blaze said nothing as she looked at him and waited for him to just say it. But she was awfully concerned that the brave blue hedgehog hero was suddenly shaking.
Sonic bowed his head, closed his eyes, and clapped his hands together.
"I wanted to ask you out on a date Blaze!"
And then it was as if the universe shifted. But Sonic realized he finally said what he wanted. Now it was time for Blaze to respond.
Although when he lifted his head up and opened his eyes, Blaze was completely frozen with her mouth agape.
Sonic started to sweat and was beginning to think that question offended her. Yes, he liked her, like more than just a friend. She was one of his closest friends. He wanted to ask because he honestly never felt this romantic affection before. But Blaze may have only seen him as a friend, so he probably scared her.
Sonic blinked a few times and ran off the bench a foot away from Blaze. He bowed his head in guilt.
"I'm sorry!" Sonic cried. "That was too much to ask for!"
Blaze blinked and got off the bench. Sonic turned and closed his eyes.
"If you don't want to go on a date with me, that's just fine!" Sonic cried.
Blaze shook her head to herself and started to run over to him.
"...I just wanted to ask," Sonic said.
But suddenly, Blaze was right beside him and took his hand. Sonic opened his eyes and blushed with Blaze's warm hand holding his and her beautiful amber eyes giving him a serious look. Blaze's hands were always warm, but something felt a bit different this time. Like her hand was warm with affection.
"Sonic," Blaze said.
Sonic blinked at her out of utter confusion as they continued to hold hands. There was a long pause as they kept eye contact with each other.
"I…" Blaze paused as she turned her blushing face away.
"I am surprised you asked me something like that."
Sonic released himself from her hold. "It's lame I know."
Before Sonic ran away, Blaze ran in front of him, took both hands, and looked deeply at him.
"No!" She started.
Both of them were blushing as Blaze tried to find the right words to say.
"I would love to go on a date with you, Sonic!" Blaze finally said.
Sonic looked as if he was in disbelief as if he were dreaming.
"...Really?" Sonic said.
Blaze nodded rapidly as she started to sweat and blush simultaneously.
"Yes I would!" Blaze continued.
Blaze didn't say it at the moment, but she was so happy. She thought of the idea of Sonic and her being romantic multiple times, but she always brushed it off. Thinking Sonic only thought of her as a friend. Thinking another pretty girl would gain his affections.
But new feelings have just been revealed for both of them. The look in both of their eyes became hypnotic as they moved a bit closer.
But then their eyes widened as they realized what they had just done. They moved their faces away as Blaze stared at her feet, and Sonic smiled and scratched his quills.
"I'll see you later!" Sonic cried before running off in the distance.
But Blaze panicked and reached out her hand.
"Sonic! When will I see you?" She cried. Blaze tried to get Sonic's attention before he ran off to the Arctic.
Sonic stopped just in time before he reached the horizon. Blaze was out of reach, but he still got her message.
"Tonight!" Sonic cried.
Blaze nodded and gestured to the fast blue hedgehog as best she could.
"Alright!" Blaze cried. "Meet me in the garden!"
Sonic felt his heart skip a beat as he did a quick trick. "I will Blaze! I will see you then!"
And then Sonic was off. His blue light reached the horizon. Blaze couldn't help but blush and giggle and do a little dance with how reality set in for her. She and Sonic were going to go on a date tonight.
But Blaze felt slight horror when she realized that this would be her first date.
Sonic ran multiple loops and rejoiced multiple times because he asked Blaze on a date, and she said yes. The beautiful, strong, and kind-hearted princess he had feelings for agreed to date him.
But the entire world around Sonic slowed down when he realized this would be his first date.
Sonic slipped and rolled around a few times before landing on his back amongst the flowers. He looked up at the empty blue sky and tried to piece together his thoughts.
He picked a beautiful flower from the ground and frowned as he twirled the flower in his hand.
"My first date is with Blaze…." Sonic said.
Blaze invited Vanilla and Cream to the castle because she nearly panicked, thinking about how to prepare for the date.
Thankfully Vanilla had plenty of good suggestions. Even if Blaze only wore dresses during royal events. But Blaze blushed at herself as Vanilla adjusted the purple dress on Blaze in front of the mirror.
"You look beautiful my dear," Vanilla said.
Blaze couldn't help but blush. She had to admit dressing up for a date wasn't so bad.
"Sonic won't be able to resist you," Vanilla said.
Blaze walked away with an embarrassed smile, and Cream walked up to her and shared in her mother's compliments.
"You look beautiful Blaze!" Cream said as she held Blaze's hands.
For some reason, Cream was wearing a fancy dress as well. It wasn't like the little girl was going on a date tonight.
Blaze giggled. "Well, you look even more beautiful!"
Blaze removed herself from Cream's hold and took a moment to breathe.
"Thanks for the compliments you two. It's nice to know I look fine on my first date," Blaze said.
Vanilla giggled, and Cream gasped.
"Oh Blaze! I figured an older princess like yourself would have plenty of dates by now with handsome princes!" Cream cried.
Blaze sheepishly smiled at that idea. Being a princess wasn't as idealized as in the children's fairy tales. Most princes she met were selfish and rude.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"Your highness! It's ready!" Cried a servant.
Blaze breathed again and smiled. "I'm a bit nervous."
Vanilla smiled confidently. "It will be the best date ever my dear!"
Blaze walked gently while wearing a skirt. She realized as a princess that she needed to learn to dress in such attire, but it wasn't ideal for fighting.
"Wait Blaze!" Cream cried.
Before Blaze could ask, Cream walked up to her with a small bunch of flowers. Cream held up the flowers, and Blaze knelt down as Cream placed the flowers in her lavender hair.
"There! Now you're all ready!" Cream said.
"Thanks Cream," Blaze blushed.
Blaze was finally ready for her first date. And all the stars in the sky seemed to agree.
"Sometimes I don't thank you enough for being my friend Tails," Sonic said as Tail helped Sonic tie a tie in front of the mirror.
"No problem Sonic!" Tails said. "It's great that you and Blaze are going on a date!"
When Tails finished, Sonic took a moment to check his reflection wearing a tie and jacket and took another moment to fix his quills.
"But how does a little guy like yourself know how to tie a tie?" Sonic asked.
Tails bashfully looked away. "Oh, just knowledge. I am an eye-head after all!"
Sonic accepted that explanation. Tails also wore a jacket and tie as if he were going on a date, but Sonic had to leave for the date soon, so he couldn't ask for an explanation on that.
The blue hedgehog said no more and headed out the door, and the night sky looked beautiful with all the stars. Twice as many stars were out tonight.
Tails followed closely behind him. And Sonic let out a sigh.
"People say because I am a great hero, I must have gone on lots of dates with the girls, but that couldn't be farther from the truth," Sonic said.
Sonic took a moment to pick a flower from the ground and hold it near the moon. "Not many girls catch my attention, except for Blaze."
He held the flower close to him. "So this date has to be perfect. I really like Blaze!" Sonic pondered for a moment. "I always have."
Tails smiled at his best friend and placed his hand on his shoulder. "I knew you did. It will be fine Sonic, you're the greatest hero ever, and she's a princess."
"Thanks," Sonic said.
Then suddenly, Sonic realized that he had almost forgotten about the date.
"Whoops! I have to go!" Sonic cried.
He started a small dash forward. "The fastest hedgehog alive can't keep his date waiting! See you later, Tails!"
And with a sonic boom, Sonic ran off in a flash of blue light.
"Sonic!" Tails cried. "Make sure you don't mess up your tie!"
But Tails realized his words were moot as a hedgehog in love just left for his first date.
Blaze sat down at the table prepared for her and Sonic. Plates and silverware were set with folded napkins and a tray with a top lid. Blaze took a moment to mentally prepare for her first date. This certainly was lovely for a first date between two teenagers, but one thing was missing. With a little bit of her fire powers, she lit up the candles in the candle holders. Flames that looked lovely like the stars in the sky.
Blaze wondered why Sonic wasn't here yet but sitting and relaxing seemed better than her accidentally saying the wrong thing on a date.
And then Sonic rushed in as usual, looking absolutely adorable in dress clothes. He smiled and held out a bouquet of flowers for her.
"Just on time!" Sonic said.
Blaze smiled. "Of course you would be. You're fast and reliable." She took the bouquet from his hands and brought the flowers to her nose.
Sonic scratched his head and grinned. "Anything for you Blaze." He said before sitting down.
"This is a great spot for a date," Sonic said.
Blaze grinned. "Yes, the servants outdid themselves. They didn't have to."
Blaze turned to the tray with the lid. "There is also food."
Sonic looked eagerly at the tray as Blaze lifted up the lid.
"Chili dogs!" Sonic cried.
They were some delicious chili dogs made just the way Sonic and Blaze liked them.
"They smell good," Blaze said.
Sonic was excited, but then he paused, gaining some confusion from Blaze.
"I mean, this is shaping up to be a great date and all," Sonic started. "But this is a nice date, and there needs to be something more special."
Blaze smiled at him and placed her hand on his, and the blue hedgehog immediately felt her warmth, which made him feel good inside.
"But this is for the both of us," Blaze said. She took a moment to bat her lashes. "And I think this is the perfect food for our date."
Sonic grinned. "Then what are we waiting for?"
Sonic could get used to dates with chili dogs and a beautiful cat princess. But the best part was this date felt totally natural, like how she and him always spent time together. But there was something more. When they finished eating, the two of them met eyes, and Blaze blushed while Sonic smiled and twirled his tie around his finger.
"Sonic," Blaze said.
Sonic blinked as he wondered what the beautiful cat princess had on her mind.
"Hm? What is it Blaze?"
Blaze smiled, and Sonic could've sworn there was a shimmer in Blaze's eyes.
"I am really happy you asked me out," Blaze said.
Sonic ended up blushing hard as well. This date was going better than he could ever imagine.
"I…" Sonic smiled uncontrollably as he scratched his chin. "Of course!"
But then Sonic was caught off guard by Blaze cupping Sonic's chin with her hand. Sonic was wide-eyed as Blaze moved in closer and kissed him on the cheek.
Sonic gasped when Blaze pulled away, and he smiled and rubbed his cheek. "Wow!"
Blaze looked into his green eyes again, and both of them went silent as they moved closer, and their noses touched.
"Hey there!"
Sonic and Blaze broke out of their lovestruck trances as they turned and saw Tails and Cream flying against the starlight sky and holding hands.
Sonic and Blaze were both stunned, but they both admitted that their friends dating each other was adorable.
"We were checking up on you two!" Cream cried.
Blaze giggled and waved at the two of them, and Sonic smiled and rolled his eyes.
"We are doing just fine, you two!" Sonic cried. "You two are the ones who are sabotaging!"
But Blaze gave Sonic's shoulder a light shove before smiling at him and taking his hand. And Sonic could get used to holding Blaze's hand for a long time.
Their date continued as a double date with Tails and Cream among the flowers and under the stars.
