Guys can I just rant in the author's note for a moment?
Now, this oneshot is going to feature the werehog, from Sonic Unleashed. I remember playing Sonic Unleashed years ago and I stopped at the first werehog stage because I hated it and felt it was poorly executed. Not to mention storywise there was absolutely no emotional weight to Sonic being turned into a monster. I figured this would be perfect for angst but in the game Sonic being turned into a monster isn't treated as a big deal.
I am a fanfiction writer this bugs the hell out of me!
So anyways, enjoy! To be honest even as I wrote this I still felt the werehog was stupid as hell.
Sonic wasn't sure how a hero's journey could lead to this.
The negative power of the chaos emeralds transformed Sonic.
He grew claws and fangs, and his voice could ring shivers down anyone's spine.
He was no longer a hero the fire kingdom adored. He was a monster.
And that became no more apparent when Sonic tried to speak with some citizens of the kingdom and backed away in fear.
Even if Sonic didn't mean any harm.
Even if the glow in his green eyes was still there.
Sonic cowered into the darkness, ashamed of the monster he had become. If the citizens who praised him were terrified of him, how would his friends feel?
How would Blaze feel?
It didn't matter anymore. Sonic cursed to himself. He had to leave the kingdom behind.
"Where's Sonic?" A little girl cried.
The children and the adults were so worried. A fierce monster was hidden in the shadows, and Sonic was nowhere to be found.
After Blaze made sure all the citizens were ok, she wondered where her beloved friend was as well.
And she wasn't going to let fear stand in her way.
Blaze was about to head into the woods, but one of her servants almost harshly grabbed her arm.
"Princess Blaze!" The servant cried.
But Blaze almost glared at the servant for grabbing her like that.
"It's too dangerous!" The servant cried, looking genuinely concerned.
"Sonic is missing!" Blaze cried back. "That's more important than a monster in our kingdom!"
Blaze broke free of the servant's hold, and the servant recoiled from the princess' anger.
"Princess Blaze!" The servant cried. But the servant's cries fell on deaf ears.
Blaze ignored the servant and sprinted into the forest even if the dark of night was chilling.
Sonic rushed through the forest to escape the kingdom. His new form certainly made him slower than he was supposed to be. It made Sonic even angrier because it felt like he was losing himself as the night went on.
But something in his heart was also stopping him. He looked around as he saw dark energy circling the forest.
It was strange because the forests were usually peaceful. But Sonic felt he didn't have time to stick around and worry about dark energy going around.
Blaze ran around the forest frantically, looking for a sign of Sonic. But everything around her was silent.
"Sonic," Blaze cried as she continued to run.
"Where are you?!" She cried desperately, hoping he would hear her.
Suddenly dark energy came out and circled her. Blaze barely had time to react as a dark creature growled at her.
Blaze screamed, and when the dark creature jumped to attack, her fire powers burned from her hands.
But a deafening howl cried, and a bigger creature got behind the shadow and slashed the pitiful dark creature with its giant claws multiple times.
Blaze could only sit and watch as the unknown creature destroyed the darkness like it was nothing.
The creature with dark blue fur let out multiple hoarse breaths and turned his back on Blaze. Blaze picked herself up and moved closer to the beast.
"Who are you?" Blaze asked.
Sonic felt despair in his heart. The person he just saved was Blaze. She saw him! And there was nowhere left to run as he turned and looked her in the eye.
Blaze was shocked that she had a better picture of the creature that had just saved her.
But she could recognize him anywhere.
"Sonic!"
Sonic felt dizzy. He didn't know how to respond now that the beautiful princess had found him like this. He could only cover his eyes.
"Blaze…"
"Please get out of here," he pleaded.
Blaze moved closer to him without hesitation.
"What happened to you?" She asked as she placed her hand on his.
Sonic moved his hands from his face and felt a calmness in his heart. He looked at his hands and Blaze and gave a sorrowful look, but he could give no explanation.
"I'm a monster," Sonic said.
Blaze shook her head.
"The people of the kingdom are afraid of me Blaze," Sonic said. He looked down in despair. "I am not their hero anymore."
Blaze took his hand in hers and looked Sonic deep in the eye.
"I need to take you home!" Blaze cried.
Sonic looked away from her and tried to release himself from her hold.
"I need to run away Blaze!"
But Blaze burst into tears, and Sonic felt even more guilty as he looked at her. Blaze was a mighty princess, and now she was crying because of him.
He hurt her, but he couldn't just stay in the kingdom.
"Sonic, I was so worried about you!" Blaze cried.
And without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him. Feeling her gentle body on his muscular body was so comforting. He couldn't help but wrap his new muscular arms around her and never let her go.
"I can't lose you!" Blaze cried as more tears streamed from her eyes.
"Because you are still my Sonic!"
Sonic was breathless from Blaze's declaration, and he could only respond by wiping away Blaze's tears with his big fingers. Blaze managed to smile weakly because even if Sonic mutated into something different, he still touched her gently.
"I'll take you home, but there is no telling what could happen," Sonic said.
Blaze didn't argue with him as Sonic lifted her bridal style and carried her out of the forest. Blaze rested her hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat.
It was still his heartbeat.
Sonic and Blaze quietly went through the kingdom where nobody was present, and all the citizens stayed in the safety of their houses. Everything was silent, and string lights lit the entire town.
When Sonic and Blaze got to the balcony, Sonic realized his arms could stretch great lengths as he grabbed onto the balcony railing and lifted the both of them up to Blaze's bedroom.
This night was getting more nightmarish, but at least Sonic was still with her.
Before Sonic could turn around and leave to keep Blaze and the kingdom safe, he couldn't help but stare at the full moon above them.
Sonic recalled everything that happened on this fateful night. His transformation into a beast, the townspeople's fear and despair, the darkness in the forest, and Blaze's devotion to him.
Before Sonic could leave, Blaze took his arm.
Sonic couldn't help but give her a sorrowful look, but she pulled his big arm and tried to take him into the bedroom with her.
And this time, Sonic couldn't resist as Blaze took him out of the darkness of the night and into the safety of her room. Now Sonic couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by emotion as he wrapped his strong arms around her and nuzzled her.
"Blaze…" He breathed as Blaze wrapped her arms around him and kept him close.
"Thank you!" He cried.
The two of them continued to embrace each other until Blaze pulled him into the bed with her.
Blaze felt so warm with Sonic's strong arms around her, holding her like she was his world.
Sonic slept so soundly with Blaze. He could rest his mind and dream instead of living a nightmare.
And the two of them slept until the sunlight shone in the bedroom, and Sonic started to transform. Blaze woke up quickly as Sonic growled and glowed, and his form was changed.
Sonic went back into his normal hedgehog form, and Sonic lay on the bed, looking bewildered. He looked at his hands and feet and could confirm that he wasn't dreaming.
Blaze blinked a few times, thinking she was still dreaming, but Sonic looked at her shocked face until tears rolled down her face. She quickly wrapped her arms around him and cried.
"Sonic!" She cried.
Sonic hugged her back, feeling the greatest sense of relief.
"Sonic!" Blaze cried again.
"I knew you were still there!" Blaze sobbed.
Sonic felt so much relief in his heart as well. He was no longer a monster, and Blaze held him so tenderly. He allowed her to cry as long as she needed. But he also realized that something wasn't adding up.
Sonic looked at the sunlight outside, and Blaze released her hold on him and tried to look him in the eye. She noticed that Sonic indeed looked distant.
"Sonic," Blaze cried.
Sonic walked to the balcony, and Blaze followed him in haste.
"Sonic!" Blaze cried again.
Sonic stopped at the railing and looked ahead of him.
"Sonic, please don't leave!" Blaze cried as she took his hand.
Sonic gave Blaze a sorrowful look as he took her hands.
"Blaze, I turned into a monster, and there are shadows in the forest."
Blaze felt herself losing her breath.
Sonic bowed his head and closed his eyes. "I need to get answers."
Blaze gasped. "No!" She nearly started crying again.
And then Sonic moved in and kissed her on the lips. Blaze was stunned until she moaned and closed her eyes as Sonic continued to kiss her. Then Sonic's heart nearly broke as he broke the kiss.
He placed his hand on her cheek and looked her in the eye. Blaze blushed hard and couldn't bring herself to respond after receiving a kiss from Sonic.
"I love you Blaze, and I'm sorry."
And with a whoosh, Sonic ran away. Blaze felt the wind brush her, and before she could respond, he was gone. But when a servant called her over, Blaze turned around and was determined to find answers as well. Because this was her kingdom, and Sonic was her love.
And when night fell, Sonic transformed into his beast form once more. Just as he suspected, this story wasn't over. But Blaze found him after searching all day.
Sonic should've known that Blaze would find him, and she brought their friends as well.
But this time, Sonic didn't push anyone away.
Even if Sonic still hated his beast form. He knew Blaze and all his friends saw the real him. And Blaze took his hand as a lover would. She still looked at him with all the love in her heart.
And together, they would find the answers to this dark curse.
