"I…I don't want to upset you or nothing, but…but I think…I think that's your brother standing there!"
"What?" asked Jack, looking to the figure standing opposite the crazed attacker, before he shook his head defiantly as he glared daggers at Hermione, who seemed to be watching the two combatants much closer than her peers.
"Don't talk rubbish, Hermione Jean Granger: in case you forgot, my brother has been dead for ten years! Dad saw the body himself, so don't make up stories just because you think you can have all the answers! Just keep your mouth shut and watch this duel; maybe you'll learn something about real duelling along the way, not just swotting up on books."
ARC 1: LOST AND FOUND
Chapter 2: In His Family's Shadow
So, perhaps a bit of backstory is needed here, right?
You see, in the non-magical world, the game of Duel Monsters was very well-known, as were names and legends of the triumphs and trials of people like Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba. What was less-known, however, was the fact that these games were also the source of incredible magic, both good and bad, and histories of mystic studies that would make foolish wand-waving and silly incantations seem obsolete.
So, naturally, it wasn't long before the game of Duel Monsters crossed into the Magical World.
Of course, since science and technology don't mix, Duel Disks and the 'realism' of life-like monsters battling it out on the field became little more than a pipe dream. Or so people thought until, by a stroke of luck and good fortune, a branch of Industrial Illusions that dealt with the Magical World caught onto the art of enchantment, as well as vocally-triggered magic and illusions. After many hours of trial-and-error, I2 found the answer to the obstacle of magic's effect on technology.
The D-Scope!
An enchanted eyepiece that, once purchased by a young duellist, was symbiotically linked with the corresponding duellist, sort of like how a wand was supposed to choose a wizard; with a single, personally-chosen phrase, the D-Scope activated, triggering a magical variation of Augmented Reality that also activated the enchantment within the M-Disks – or Mystic Disks – that wizard-born duellists used to duel their opponents.
With the MAR active, the M-Disk also grew an additional arm, which was the same as the Monster, Spell and Trap Card Zones on a regular Duel Disk's blade, which allowed wizards to participate in duels just like their non-magical counterparts.
Of course, many also used regular disks to duel in the non-magical world, while Duelling also became a lesson at many schools, including at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where Jack Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger studied their craft, as well as other insane adventures that, for three years, had led to equally-mad and amazing outcomes.
Though none could have compared them to the horrors, the awe, and the revelations, that greeted them at the Quidditch World Cup.
Especially in the case of the duel-wizard known to the Brits, and several other magical beings across the world, as the Boy-Who-Lived…
EBUB
As both duellists drew their first hands, Jack scoffed again as he argued, "No! There's just no way that could be my brother; as I said, he's dead."
"So is You-Know-Who," argued Hermione, watching as the two duellists got ready to rumble. "But that hasn't stopped us having to deal with him every year since we started at school."
"Excuse me, Hermione, but I think you mean stopped me dealing with him!" insisted Jack, before he waved his hand dismissively as he added, "Look, whatever; the point is, I don't know who this prat is, but, as far as I'm concerned, anything that gets that freak's attention off of us is alright by me; now, let's get out of here before…"
The words were no sooner out of his mouth before, to Jack's alarm and Ron and Hermione's disbelief and terror, what could only be described as a ring of purple fire suddenly rose up around them, as well as the two duellists in front of them, earning what could only be described as a cold, cruel, demonic laugh from the strange-looking attacker.
"Oh, so sorry, little kiddies; looks like you're trapped within my little cage until I've had this appetiser for my din-dins! But don't worry, wickle Potty; I pinky-pwomise that I'll come and nummy-nom-nom on your soul soon!"
"Oh, come on!" insisted Ron, earning a dumbfounded look from Hermione as he explained, "You think this will stop the Boy-Who-Lived? Go on, J; show this loony bitch what you can do."
As Jack went to lift his wand, however, his eyes widened, as did Ron and Hermione's, when what could only be described as a large horde of ghostly faces suddenly formed in the flames, moaning and crying out in horrific, demonic fear, dread and pleas for help and freedom.
At the same time, what looked like purple-fiery hands reached out to the trio, causing all three of them to back away from the fire, much to the crazy attacker's delight and apparent amusement. "Aww, how sweet! Looks like my Master's dinnertime snacks want you to play with them, lickle freaky-freaks! You might want to avoid letting them touch you…oh, but go ahead and blow out the candles if you like, Mr Brat-Who-Lived! After all, they're just ghostly souls; it's not your fault if you go ahead and kill them yourself, now, is it?"
"You…you mean the…they're…these faces…those hands…they're all…all…"
"Real!" insisted the hooded rescuer, whom Hermione had, apparently, identified as Jack's long-lost brother, not that Jack believed it.
And yet, his insistent, firm answer made all three youths jump as their rescuer looked down to the trio as he explained, "And no, Potter: she isn't bluffing. This isn't some silly little Incendio you're dealing with; these are the flames of the Netherworld, also known as the Shadow Realm, and their power is fuelled and empowered by the souls of all who were claimed by the Duel Ghouls belonging to this demoness and her Master!"
"But…but that can't…the Ministry…Dad…"
"James Potter's name means zip when it comes to this power, and the same for your pathetic authority figures, Potter!" growled the hooded man, his voice edged by a note of what sounded like actual hatred when he talked about Jack's Father. "The only way to free these souls, and let you and your recklessly-stupid-minded friends get out of here safely is if this bitch…this Dark Signer…is defeated in a Shadow Game!"
"Dark Signer?" chorused Ron and Jack.
"Shadow Game?" asked Hermione, before she turned and actually yanked her two male counterparts as far away from the flames around them as she could; when the two boys gave her accusing, arguing looks, Hermione indicated the fire as she insisted, "He…he's telling the truth: if…if we've just…just been trapped inside of a Shadow Game, this…this isn't just Illusion Magic anymore…it'll be…be…real!"
"Impossible!" laughed Ron.
"Oh, really?" asked the apparently-named Dark Signer, before they turned and laughed loudly as they asked, "Is this impossible, little baby?"
Suddenly, Ron let out a scream of terror and torment as one of the flaming hands suddenly shot out to him, where it wrapped itself around his arm, holding him as tightly as a snake encircling its prey. Worse-still, when the arm wrapped around Ron's arm, it proceeded to burn up his sleeve, eating away at it until, when it touched his flesh, Ron's screams grew as he felt raw, tormenting burns spread over his flesh.
Seconds later, the ghostly arm retreated, leaving a very deep, exceedingly-painful-looking burn coiled around Ron's arm, the flesh practically rotting away as it was exposed to the air, causing Ron to fall to his knees as he cried out in agony and fear.
"RON!" Gasped Jack, growling darkly as he turned to the rescuer, "Fine! Maybe this is real, but, listen, whoever you are, you'd better not lose! My Dad won't thank you for bringing back the Boy-Who-Lived without his soul! So, kick this psycho's ass and make it painful, do you hear me?"
"Whatever you say, Little Brother," replied the rescuer, throwing his hood back, which now showed Jack what Hermione had seen.
Wild, raven-black hair styled in an oddly-similar manner to Yugi Muto himself, or maybe even the King of Games' friend, Ryou Bakura, his green eyes shining with raw power and fury. At the same time, Jack saw what looked like a tribal tattoo covering the rescuer's right eye, making him look devil-may-care while, at the same time, the mark seemed to be pulsing, like a heartbeat, as the rescuer focused on his opponent.
"Well? You heard him, Dark Signer: you threw down the gauntlet…so, let the games begin!"
"About time, handsome!" sniggered the Dark Signer, placing their hand upon their deck as they laughed, "And you are handsome; so, I'll tell you what? If you're a good wickle pretty-boy and submit to me, I might consider trying to convince my Master that you'd make a better pet-boy than a yummy treat for him, what do you say?"
"How about…make your move?"
"As you wish," chuckled the Dark Signer, drawing her first card.
EBUB
As the duel began, however, Jack found himself unable to tear his eyes off of the boy standing opposite the threat to Jack and his friends.
He…he didn't want to believe his eyes, even less-so after Hermione had blatantly abused the dead once already, but, the more he looked at their rescuer, the more Jack found himself unable to deny it.
"Harry…Big Brother…you're alive?"

Harry: 4000/Dark Signer: 4000
"And, to start my turn, I think I'll place one insignificantly-important little card down and summon out my beautiful friend: come forth and infest this world with your dark beauty, my precious Pestilent Zombie (1900/100) in attack mode!"
Rather than a flash of light or a geyser of energy, the trio's eyes widened when a sickly-coloured cloud covered the Dark Signer's field, its greyish-red-coloured form oozing what looked like blood that rose up, forming a half-decayed humanoid figure with skeletal arms and fingers, as well as heavily-mottled, decaying clothes, bloodstained hair and one eye missing. As the creature rose onto the field, the ground beneath it seemed to rot and blacken, while the zombie – if that's what it was – started drooling black slime from its jaws and empty eye socket.
(Pestilent Zombie: ATK: 1900/DEF: 100/Level: 4/DARK/ZOMBIE: A victim of a terrible plague that rotted away the very Earth itself, it now wanders the wasteland, looking for fresh meat.)
"A Pestilent Monster, is it?" asked Harry, humming softly as he smirked, "Not bad; guess I'd better keep my guard up."
"And I will make my guard down, as I end my turn, pretty," chuckled the Dark Signer, indicating for Harry to continue the duel. "Now, show me what makes you a better plaything…sorry, play-mate, than a possible little snack."
"How about this?" asked Harry, drawing his card before he eyed his hand.
When he did so, Ron, Jack and Hermione all felt a little surprised, if not hopeful, when they saw Harry's lips turn upwards in a smirk before he looked up at the Dark Signer with a mixture of amusement and gratitude.
"Well, I suppose I should thank you, Dark Signer."
"Why?"
"Without you taking the first turn honours, this move wouldn't have been possible, so thanks for helping me; now, let me show my gratitude as I start my turn by Special Summoning out my mighty Cyber Dragon (2100/1600) in attack mode, and next, I activate the Spell Card known as Spark Up!"
EBUB
"Not bad," said Hermione, watching as a serpentine machine of a monster rose onto the field. "Not only is Cyber Dragon a good source of offence, but, thanks to its special ability, because that…that Dark Signer had a monster on her field, Harry was not only able to summon it without needing to tribute a monster, but he was also able to bring it out and make sure he could still summon a creature later."
"So…he's cheating?" asked Ron, earning a scoff from Hermione.
"No, Ronald: Special Summons aren't cheating; like Fusion and Ritual Summons, as well as others we haven't covered yet, they're just a way to improve your battle lines whilst leaving you room for a second line."
"So…he's cheating?" asked Ron again, earning another scoff from Hermione.
Sometimes, she wondered why she'd even made friends with such a moron.
EBUB
At the same time that Hermione was trying to deal with the idiot's lack of knowledge or understanding, Harry's field acquired a new card; one that showed a series of mechanical gears, all of which had crashed together, kicking up sparks and bolts of lightning that reached down into the earth.
"Thanks to this card," explained Harry, holding up his M-Disk as he explained, "When I have a Machine Type Monster, like my mighty Cyber Dragon, on the field: I'm allowed to search my hand and my Deck and summon out as many other Cyber Dragons as I have. The only downside is that my new dragons aren't allowed to attack this turn, but it doesn't matter: Cyber Dragons 2 and 3; come on out and join the family!"
(Spark Up: SPELL/NORMAL: Select one Machine-Type Monster on your side of the field: search your Deck and Special Summon all other cards in your Deck with the same name as the selected monster. Any monster Special Summoned by this card's effect cannot attack on the turn they are summoned.)
With two loud roars, two more serpentine dragons rose up, while Harry saw the Dark Signer cock her head to one side as she asked, "So…what? Are you hoping to frighten me, gorgeous? Trust me; you're going to have to try much harder than that!"
"As you wish," agreed Harry, before he looked down to Jack and the others with a small, fond smile as he explained, "Now, I imagine that, like this twisted, sadistic little she-devil…"
"Aww, thank you, lovely boy! Flattery will get you everywhere…well, it will if you're a good boy and give in; go on, sexy. Do it."
Ignoring the Dark Signer's blatant act of flirting, as well as the apparent suggestion, Harry continued, "…You're probably expecting me to fuse these three together to form their very impressive big brother; but, you see, that's not my plan at all. Instead, I'm going to perform a different sort of unity on these three powerful creatures."
EBUB
"A different unity? What different unity?"
"Maybe he's going to Tribute them," suggested Jack, though he too was curious, as well as confused. "But what monster needs three tributes?"
"The Egyptian God Cards," said Hermione, though her eyes were fixed more on Harry's field than her friends as she continued in an almost distant tone of voice. "The Sacred Beasts, the Wicked Gods, Gilford the Lightning, certain other high-powered, unique-summon Monsters…but…but I don't think that is what he has planned."
"Then what?" asked the boys, though not before Ron winced as another jolt of burning pain shot through his arm as he tried to turn himself around, so that he could see the duel better.
"I think…well, I can guess, but…how can he know about that? We don't even learn about that kind until we start this year's classes…"
EBUB
"Kind of helps I don't limit myself to the teachings of fools and madmen with delusions of grandeur," argued Harry, indicating his field as he continued in a stronger voice. "But I digress: as she said, I'm about to bring these three together in a different way to what you're expecting. For now, I overlay my three Level 5 Cyber Dragons, in order to summon out something with a real bite to it!"
EBUB
"Overlay?" asked Jack, watching as all three Cyber Dragons vanished into what looked like a red spiralling field.
"I…I knew it!" insisted Ron, letting out a cry as he pointed his burned arm at Harry. "He…he is cheating! There's no such thing as Overpay!"
"Over Lay, Ronald!" argued Hermione, shaking her head as she watched the duel.
"Honestly, don't you read?"
EBUB
"With these three monsters," continued Harry, clenching his free hand into a fist as he exclaimed, "I build the Overlay Network and XZ summon the almighty Cydraforce Dragon (3000/3200) in attack mode!"
(Cydraforce Dragon: ATK: 3000/DEF: 3200/RANK: 5/MACHINE/EFFECT/XYZ – Three Level 5 MACHINE Monsters:
XYZ EFFECT: When this card is targeted by an opponent's attack, remove 1 XYZ Material Monster from this card during the Damage Step. During the End Phase of the turn that this card is destroyed, Special Summon this monster to your side of the field and increase its ATK by 500 points. When this monster is Special Summoned by this effect, return any remaining XYZ Material Monsters to this card. When this monster is destroyed, Banish all three XYZ Material Monsters used to summon this card and inflict 1500 points of Effect Damage to your opponent.
CARD EFFECT: This card can attack your opponent directly during the Battle Phase of the turn that this card is XYZ Summoned.)
With an explosion of raw energy and magic, as well as a powerful hurricane wind that buffeted the field madly, a brand-new monster rose up onto the field with an earth-shattering, bone-jarring roar.
At first, it looked oddly-similar to the monster whom even Hermione had admitted she'd been expecting: Cyber End Dragon.
Unlike Cyber End Dragon, however, the new dragon had a much smoother-looking body, as well as spikes that ran down each of its necks until they met at the tail, forming a drill-like shape. The wings of the dragon unfurled as it descended onto the field, revealing that the mighty beast had four large wings as well as four clawed, mechanical legs that crashed loudly onto the ground as the beast took its spot before its master.
At the same time, three green-coloured orbs suddenly began circling the new beast, almost like the rings around an atom, or moons orbiting a planet, each one glowing with warm light that bathed the whole field in their glow as they flew around Cydraforce Dragon's body.
"Mmm…impressive!" laughed the Dark Signer, earning a smirk from Harry.
"You haven't seen anything yet, Dark Signer. You see, when Cydraforce Dragon takes to the field, its special ability activates. On the turn that its summoned, Cydraforce Dragon can attack you directly, though not before I lower his attack power by half!"
"Now go, Cydraforce Dragon: give this Dark Signer a taste of your fury. Attack with Super Strident Storm!"
Spreading its wings, Cydraforce Dragon's whole body lit up like an electrical overcharge, which seemed to gather in its jaws on each of its three heads, though not before those heads, and the power within them, seemed to fritz and spark, indicating the triggering of its special ability.
Cydraforce Dragon: ATK – 3000/1500
With a loud blast, the dragon unleashed its assault on the Dark Signer, who screamed loudly as the assault struck out at her life points, bypassing her Pestilent Zombie in the process.
Harry: 4000/Dark Signer: 2500
"Wow!" laughed the Dark Signer, wafting away the smoky aftermath as she exclaimed, "That actually felt pretty good, sweetie-pie; I look forwards to getting my next fix. But, until then, I want to thank you for attacking me so passionately, as it allows me to activate my little trap: Biomass Bomb!"
While Harry looked alarmed by the fact that he'd honestly forgotten about the Dark Signer's face-down, he now saw exactly what it was as he saw a Trap Card rise up, showing an outline of a human body, with a thick, pustulant-looking sphere in the human's heart, the edges of the sphere laced with veiny tendrils that seemed to be spreading through the body.
"Thanks to my special little trap," explained the Dark Signer, pointing to Cydraforce Dragon as she laughed, "Your Big Bad Beastie there catches a particularly-nasty little case of the sniffles; one that not only forces him to switch into defence mode, but, during the End Phase, you take damage equal to that pretty dragon's attack power!"
"NO!"
"Yes!"
(Biomass Bomb: TRAP/CONTINUOUS: Activate when you take Battle Damage, including Direct Damage: equip this card to the attacking monster and switch it into Defence Mode. During the End Phase that this card was activated, deal Effect Damage to your opponent equal to the equipped monster's ATK. As long as this card is on the field, the equipped card cannot attack or change its position.)
Growling at the Dark Signer's move, Harry looked to his hand before he shook his head, a small part of him knowing he should have seen that coming, while, at the same time, he silently mused that it was a good move.
Undoubtedly, this was why the Dark Signer had set such a weak, ordinary, effect-devoid monster on the face in the first place when, thanks to his studies on the kind of archetypes that his enemies may use, Harry had known there were other, stronger, deadlier, low-level Pestilence Monsters that she could have used.
Unless her endgame was to set him up…and he'd fallen for it.
"Then…since there's nothing more I can do to save my dragon or my life points, I'll…I'll set this card face down and…and end my turn!"
"Boom-boom-time!" laughed the Dark Signer, just as Cydraforce Dragon's body turned a furious shade of red, which seemed to grow a series of large, over-infectious pustules, which pulsed like living hearts before, with a loud explosion, the 'bomb' exploded, sending Harry flying straight into the wall of fire as his life points took a major hit.
Harry: 1000/Dark Signer: 2500
Even worse, as Harry hit the fire, the realism of the Shadow Game hit him now as he screamed in white-hot terror, his spine, part of his arm and even his head being burned by the Dark Fires around him, before they let him fall to the ground.
"Aww…baby get a boo-boo!" laughed the Dark Signer.
Before she could say another word, however, the Dark Signer's head snapped around when a chorus of new voices called out as one;
"STUPEFY!"
"To be continued…but here…call it my thanks for such a tasty appetiser to whet my appetite, beautiful," chuckled the Dark Signer.
Before Harry, or any of the others, could stop her, she waved her hands through the air in a very powerful, commanding gesture; on her command, the flaming walls surrounding the teens and the Dark Signer turned white before, one by one, the souls within suddenly became human once more, their vessels looking confused, scared, lost and even alarmed.
In all the confusion, the Dark Signer slipped away, leaving Jack, Ron – who also saw his own war-wound healing with surprising quickness – and Hermione with the victims, as well as a downed, burned duellist.
When Jack and Hermione ran to him, however, the Boy-Who-Lived's eyes widened in alarm when, now he was much closer and able to see through the fire and the ferocity of all that had happened, he saw the truth.
"Harry…"
"Hey there, Jackie," gasped the almost-prone form of Harry James Potter, his eyes filled with a mixture of apology and relief as he groaned softly.
"Word of advice…never get caught in a Shadow Duel; those attacks are real killers…"
"JACK!"
As soon as the new voice cut through Harry's vague attempt at humour, however, all traces vanished as, to Hermione's surprise, the burned youth managed to pull himself up, his green eyes now hardening in their sockets as he looked towards the source of the cry.
A bespectacled man, accompanied by a fiery-redheaded woman and several other comrades, the lesser of whom also looked like a small resemblance of Harry and Jack with his wild hair and roguish features.
However, when he, along with his redheaded companion, saw Harry standing there with Jack and his friends, the man stopped dead in his tracks, a mixture of rage, alarm and disbelief now crossing his face as he cried out one word.
"YOU?"
"Hi Daddy," drawled Harry, stepping away from Jack and Hermione, before he looked to the left of the man, where the redheaded woman was staring at him in tearful disbelief and also delight, while Harry sighed softly as he added, "Hey, Mum…what is it Twain once said?"
While Lily Potter could only stare in wonder, disbelief, joy and pained heartache as she saw both of her boys standing together – an image she'd only dreamed ever since Harry's death had been reported ten years prior – Harry's gaze hardened again as he looked to James Potter, who looked like he was about to have an aneurysm as the boy addressed him.
"Oh yes, I remember…it would appear that the rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated…wouldn't you say…Dad?"
EBUB
"I quite enjoyed that! I hope that I get another invite soon!"
Cackling like a madwoman, the Dark Signer stepped out from the shadows, where she shed her dark attire, transforming a horrifying, intimidating visage into a pale, beautiful vision of wonder and majesty that could have sent grown men running when they saw her.
Just one of the perks of being Bellatrix Lacerta Lestrange, Craziest Witch in History.
As for Craziest Wizard, there was only one whom she knew deserved such a title.
And, as she walked through the shadows, Bellatrix smiled fondly, if not with dark longing and desire, when she saw a familiar ring of purple fire light up around her; however, instead of a ruined camp or some equally-macabre scene, this time, the flames revealed something else entirely.
A large, black throne, which seemed to have been forged from the scales of a mighty and terrible creature; upon the throne, sat a dark-dressed figure, who smiled confidently as he saw Bellatrix let out an excitable cry before she prostrated herself at his feet.
"My love…"
"My Queen," replied the man on the throne, beckoning Bellatrix towards him with an armoured gauntlet that looked more like the claws of a dragon.
An irony, given who he was, but still, Bellatrix obeyed the unspoken order before she purred like a faithful kitten as she felt her love's armoured fingers teasing her wild, bedraggled locks. At the same time, Bellatrix gasped in awe and wondrous arousal as she felt a whisper of pure Dark Magic brush against her, piercing her mind, her heart and soul where, like a dog nosing a scent, the Darkness burrowed its way into her, seeking out its quarry with a ravenous sense of desire.
One that Bellatrix gladly surrendered herself to, before she heard a soft, almost-content slurping sound, accompanied by a pat on her head from her dark love as he whispered, "Mmm…delicious…not quite the feast you usually provide me with, my dear Bella, but it's enough to sate me…for now."
Nodding in response, Bellatrix looked up at her love before she asked, "I didn't hurt you too badly, did I, my Lord?"
"Can you ever?" asked her lover, leaning forwards, which allowed the purple flames to reveal his face.
"No," said Bellatrix, nuzzling her lord and lover's armoured hand before she added, "But if I had done, I would have gladly sacrificed my whole Soul Pool to you to make up for it; I am sorry that I went overboard back there, my love…I promise, from now on, I will follow your plans and help you play the ultimate game on the mortals."
"And then…we will…rule…" growled Harry James Potter, his emerald-green eyes now outlined by black sclera as he smiled down at Bellatrix.
"But first, before we can rule, we must become…complete…"
Chapter 2 and while it looks like the Boy-Who-Lived and his friends have gotten a taste of the Dark Side, it looks like new shadows descend on the Potters: what will this family reunion bring to the table, especially for the lost-now-found Harry Potter?
Also, how does Harry know of the Dark Signers and where did he learn to hone his craft so well that, even with a mistake or two, he's basically a living legend in the making?
Finally…HUH?
TWO Harrys?
One Good, One Evil, One Hero, One Villain…that can't be right…can it?

Also, I know its cheap and cheesy to use my own designed cards/monsters for XYZ summons and most of the others that'll be in this story, but, at the same time, that's the fun of Fanfiction.
I hope you enjoyed my first attempt at an XYZ Monster of my own design.
