AMY´S CREEK - S01E03 - ACCEPTANCE

Disclaimer: I don´t own Dawson´s Creek or the characters from it

1. Int. Amy´s Room. Morning.

We´re back, where we left off. Amy and Vicki finish their kiss and smile at each other.

Amy:

What a way to start the day, huh?

Vicki:

Can I tell you a secret?

Amy nods.

Vicki:

I REALLY like kissing you!

They go back to kissing.

Amy (voice over):

I bet you´re wondering how my coming out went. We started with the easy one. If two gay dads wouldn´t be accepting of their lesbian daughter, there´s something wrong with the world!

2. Int. Kitchen. Morning.

Vicki and Amy are telling Jack and Dougie.

Amy:

Dads, I found out, that I´m gay.

Vicki:

And I´m her girlfriend.

Jack can´t help smiling to himself. Dougie looks more serious.

Amy:

You´re not mad at me, are you?

Dougie:

No, of course not. It just comes as a bit of a shock.

Jack:

How long have you known?

Amy:

Since yesterday. I didn´t know, until me and Vicki kissed.

Dougie:

How can you be so casual? It took me years to come out!

Amy:

Which is exactly, why I want to get it out in open. You told me yourself, that having to pretend you were straight, made you miserable.

Jack:

So all that time with Marco ...

Amy:

Looking back, we were more friends pretending to be a couple, than an actual couple. This feels like the real deal.

Vicki:

I promise to take good care of her.

Dougie:

I´m sure you will, Sweetheart. But coming out isn´t easy. Have you thought about, how you´re gonna do it, or deal with the teasing and potential bullying afterwards?

Jack:

It´s been a long time, since we came out. Maybe the world will be more accepting now.

Dougie:

This is Capeside, Jack! Some things never change.

Amy (voice over):

I´ll give you ten seconds to venture a guess. Who was right, Dad one or Dad two?

3. Int. Car. Morning.

They tell Joey on the ride to school.

Amy (voice over):

Joey was surprised, but she was nice about it, as I expected.

Joey:

I guess, congratulations are in order!

Vicki:

I hope, we can become friends, Joey.

Joey:

I´m sure, we can. If you´re important to Amy, you´re important to me.

Amy:

You´re really fine with it?

Joey:

Love is hard to find. If you do, you have to hold on to it. I´m just worried, how other people will react. I remember how hard it was for Jack.

Amy:

We´re three for three so far.

Vicki:

Yeah, the three easiest ones!

Amy (voice over):

Vicki was right. This is where the hard part started ...

She looks out the window and wonders. Vicki takes her hand to give her strength.

4. Int. School. Morning.

Amy and Vicki come walking down the hall, holding hands. There´s some snickering, but they get some thumbs up and smiles too.

Amy (voice over)

Or so we thought. We decided to walk in proudly, holding hands. I´m sure that twenty years ago, if Jack had walked down the hall holding hands with his boyfriend, they would have been shouted at, threatened with getting beat up and all kinds of other nastiness. For two girls in the year 2017, the story was a bit different.

Marco and Paige come over to them.

Paige:

Are you two a couple? That is so boss!

Amy and Vicki look surprised.

Amy:

First of all, why are you talking to me? You never talk to me!

Paige:

This school is so lame! We so need a lesbian couple, to make us just the slightest bit edgy!

Vicki:

I´m glad, we could help, I guess.

Marco:

I´m happy for you, Amy.

Amy:

Thanks.

Marco:

How did your parents react?

Paige:

That´s right! You have gay dads! Like dads, like daughter, right?

Amy:

I´m not sure, it works like that. But they we´re cool with it.

Paige:

I know, we let a guy come between us before. Now we know, that can´t become an issue, I can´t see why, we can´t become friends!

Amy is speechless.

Amy (voice over):

Oh, no! I just knew that she´d ask next, if I wanted to hang out!

Paige:

We should so hang out after school!

Vicki:

She´s busy. We have a lot of coming out to do!

Amy:

What she said!

Paige:

We´ll do it some other day, then! I always had you picked for a Lame-O, but now that you´re gay, it´s like you´re a hundred times cooler!

Amy (voice over):

What did I do to deserve this?

Amy and Vicki excuse themselves and leave them.

Amy:

Thanks for saving me back there!

Vicki:

What else are girlfriends for?

They smile at each other.

5. Int. Cafeteria. Day.

Amy and Vicki come in with Ash, who´s looking a bit uncomfortable. Amy and Vicki on the other hand are starting to look confident.

Amy (voice over):

As the day went on, we got a few comments her and there, but nothing I would call bullying. It was more playful teasing and I´m neither me or Vicki let that stuff get to us. IF you get one, you just have to give back in the same fashion.

We see a pair of jacks come over to them. Ash quickly leaves, not wanting to get involved in it.

Jock #1:

Are you gonna put on a show for everyone?

Amy:

You first, then we´ll see, if we feel like it.

Jock #2:

Spunky! Just how I like them! If you ever feel like switching teams, give me a call.

Vicki:

She wouldn´t give you a call, if you had the only two phones left on earth!

Jock #1:

Be still, my heart! There´s two of them!

Jock #2:

Yo, we´re up for a foursome, if you are. I bet you´re a pair of wildcats in the sack!

Amy:

Drop dead!

Jock #1:

All you need is a real man! I´ll bring either of you back on the straight team in no time!

Vicki:

I´d rather masturbate with a dildo covered in barbed wire!

Jock #2:

You are kinky! I love it!

The jocks fist bump and the girls leave them.

Amy (voice over):

Did a pair of jocks just hit on us? Maybe it is true, that we always want what we can´t get.

A pair of cheerleaders come over to them.

Cheerleader #1:

Don´t let those jerks ruin your day.

Amy (voice over):

Now cheerleaders were talking to me? Did I wake up in Bizarro world?

Vicki:

We won´t.

Cheerleader #2:

That´s good. Have either of considered trying out for the squad this year?

Amy:

It´s not on my current artinerery.

Vicki:

Mine neither. I´m not sure, I have the athletic ability.

Cheerleader #1:

You should consider, at least trying out. What do you have to lose?

Amy:

Our dignities, perhaps?

Cheerleader #2:

Not all the girls are equally accepting of gays. Having one of you on the team, could help them see, that you´re people like everyone else.

Cheerleader #1:

Seriously, it´s 2017. We should be past seeing you as being different.

Vicki:

It´s nice to hear, that you feel that way.

Cheerleader #2:

Don´t spread it around, but there´s a kegger down by the golf course on Friday. You should come.

Amy:

We´ll see.

They go to sit with Ash.

Amy:

We´re invited to party with the cool kids on Friday!

Vicki:

Should we go?

Amy:

Beats me! I´ve never been anything close to popular before!

Ash:

I don´t want to rain of your gay pride parade, but they´re only asking you, because you´re the flavor of the week.

Amy (voice over):

The one person, who was finding it hard to be enthusiastic, was Ash. It´s clear why. She´s never liked getting too much attention. Now she´d been swept into our infamy, through no fault of her own. Even with everything going great on the surface, annoying jocks excepted, it was hard to get truly happy, when she was feeling down and I knew, it was my fault. As great as Vicki is, me and Ash have been together, since our days of playing in sandlots. Seeing her like that always breaks my heart.

Amy looks at Ash with sympathy.

6. Int. The Icehouse. Day.

Amy comes in for work, says hi to Allie and slaps hands with Bodie, who´s behind the counter.

Amy (voice over):

Things with Ash, had to wait however, since I had to go to work. My parents think, it´s good for me to earn my own allowance. That it´ll teach me the value of money. I was surprised to see Bodie there, though.

Bodie:

Pacey´s at home sick, so you´ll have to make due with me tonight.

Amy:

I´m sure, we´ll manage.

They smile at each other.

Amy (voice over):

I don´t mind working at the Icehouse, especially not on Pacey´s nights off. Don´t get me wrong, I love Pacey to bits, but it´s always fun to hang out with uncle Bodie. He takes over for Pacey on his days off. Him and my aunt Bessie are kind of a weird couple. Not because he´s African American and she´s Caucasian, that´s only surface stuff. He´s the most relaxed guy, I know and that includes Pacey, where as she takes everything seriously. I guess, opposites do attract.

Bodie:

Hey, Sweet Pea. How´s it hanging?

Amy:

I came out as gay today.

Bodie looks more than a little surprised.

Bodie:

For real? You´re not joking?

Amy:

Nope. I met a girl and we found out, that we´re head over heels for each other. So, I guess, I´m gay.

Bodie:

Who´s this amazing girl, then?

Amy:

Her name is Vicki. She wants to be a film maker someday.

Bodie:

An art school type, huh?

Amy:

And she´s a great kisser!

Bodie:

Keep the memory of those kisses in mind tonight. We won´t have time to get bored, I can tell you that much.

Amy:

Suits me fine.

She goes to change.

Amy (voice over):

I knew he would tell aunt Bessie, so that was another one knocked off the list. If I didn´t have to go to work, I could have told my entire family before dinner, at the rate I was going!

7. Ext. Apartment Building. Evening.

Joey comes up to Pacey´s door. She has a Tupperware bowl in her hands.

Joey (voice over):

Just a little side note from Amy´s coming out story, which I don´t know about you, but I´m really enjoying! Sure, it filled me with worries, when she came out to me. But I just want girls like her and Vicki to be happy and if that´s together, then all the power and my best wishes to them. I can´t help thinking to myself, than Jen would have been proud, if she´d been there to see, how she handled it. Sometimes, the two of them are so alike, that it´s as if Jen´s soul went into Amy´s body, when she died and now it´s happily co-existing with Amy´s soul.

She rings the doorbell.

Joey (voice over):

Anyway, I was at Bessie´s, when Pacey called to let them know, that he was sick and Bodie had to work. As Pacey´s close friend again, I felt like I should pay him a visit and cheer him up.

The door opens and a sick looking Pacey opens it. Joey smiles at him.

Pacey:

Hey, Joey.

Joey:

Hey! I come bearing Bodie´s Lasagna!

Pacey:

That´s nice of you. I haven´t really eaten anything today, because I´ve felt like crap.

Joey:

Can I come in?

Pacey:

It´s on your own risk. I don´t want to hear you blame me, if you get sick.

Joey:

I´ll take my chances. You look like, you could use some cheering up.

Pacey:

I won´t argue there. Come in, then.

He lets her in.

8. Int. Pacey´s Apartment. Evening.

They sit down next to each other on the couch.

Joey:

What were you watching?

Pacey:

A World War One documentary. It´s nice to watch people have it worse.

Joey:

No wonder, you´re depressed! Mustard gas and soldiers being mowed down my machine guns are hardly a cheerful subject. To turn that frown upside down, you know what you need.

Pacey:

Hmm. A surprise gift of a million Dollars?

Joey:

That´ll have to wait until my business blows up and I top the Forbes 500.

Pacey:

You don´t mean ...

Joey:

I know, you don´t have a VCR anymore, so I had Dawson upload it to YouTube. Our first movie together.

Pacey:

Are you sure, it´s aged well? We were 15, when we made that.

Joey:

Do you remember making it?

Pacey:

I remember how uncomfortable that suit was. I told Dawson several times, that I was never playing the monster again.

Joey:

The main thing, I remember is Jen coming in. One look at her and Dawson knew, he had his star.

Pacey:

You did not like her at first!

Joey:

No, but that was the insecurities in me. It was thanks to you guys, that I finally gave her a chance. Speaking of Jen, Amy will have something to tell you, but I think, I should prepare you.

Pacey:

What is it?

Joey:

She´s a lesbian. That Vicki girl is her girlfriend.

Pacey can´t help laughing.

9. Ext. Capeside High. Morning.

Amy and Trish arrive for school together.

Amy (voice over):

So yeah, that was how uncle Pacey reacted to it, at least according to aunt Joey. She got sick, by the way and they had to postpone their date for a week, or it would have been a snot-fest, as uncle Pacey vividly put it.

She catches a glimpse of Ash hurrying into the school.

Amy (voice over):

I texted Ash after work, but she didn´t text me back. Now she was trying to avoid me?

Amy tries to look, like it doesn´t affect her.

10. Int. Classroom. Morning.

Amy sits down next to Ash. It´s a little awkward between them.

Amy:

I texted you after work last night to see, if you wanted to hang out.

Ash:

I didn´t see it until this morning. It felt kinda pointless to reply to it by that point.

Amy:

Are we okay?

Ash:

Why wouldn´t we be?

Amy:

Come on. This right now feels weird. Talking to you has never felt that way before.

Ash:

Things are changing. There´s nothing we can do about it.

Amy:

What do you say, you come down to the Icehouse tonight? Bodie´s working and if I sweet talk him, I can get you dinner for free.

Ash has to think about it.

Amy:

Please, Ash. Let´s get things un-weirded here!

Ash:

Alright. When?

Amy:

As long, as it´s not between 7 and 9.

Ash:

Six?

Amy:

Cool. I´ll make sure, that a table is reserved for you.

Ash shyly smiles.

Ash:

Will I get the VIP treatment?

Amy:

I can´t guarantee it, but I´ll do my best.

Amy (voice over):

I don´t know, where the word un-weirded came from, but hey, it did the trick!

Amy looks hopeful.

11. Int. Cafeteria. Day.

Amy and Vicki come in, but without Ash, who´s sitting by herself. They get in line for food and to Amy´s dismay, Marco and Paige get in line behind them.

Amy (voice over):

Oh, boy!

Paige:

Hey, guys. Do you want to sit together?

Vicki:

We´re gonna sit with Ash, like we always do.

Paige:

Ash? That girl is so boring, that I could fall asleep from looking at her!

Marco:

That isn´t nice.

Paige:

I only call them, like I see them.

Amy:

Ash happens to be a very nice girl. That´s not a reason to rag on her!

Paige:

Don´t get your panties in a bunch! If you want to stick with her and never make any other friends, because she´ll scare them all away, be my guest. It just sounds a bit lonely and closed off to me, is all.

Marco:

Paige, can we quit it with this subject?

Paige:

Since you asked nicely. It´s not my problem, if they can´t handle my "Truth Bombs".

Amy looks annoyed.

Amy:

The worst part is that I know, she´s right. Aunt Joey once told me, that some guys have a friend, they refer to as their "Cock Blocker", who´s the guy that ruins it for them, when they´re trying to pick up a girl. Ash is sort of that way with new people, because she´s so shy, that as her friend, it can be frustrating sometimes. Once they got to know her, they´d find an incredible girl and there would be no way, they couldn´t love her, like I do. They problem is that she´s like a closed clam, until she feels like she knows someone and trusts them.

They get to the front of the line and get their food.

We cut over to Ash. Amy and Vicki come over to her and sit down.

Amy:

You raced out of class, before I had the chance to react.

Ash:

I was just really hungry.

Vicki:

Is it good?

Ash:

It´s alright. They sort of have way of making all the food taste the same, don´t they?

Amy:

It´s a mystery of science.

Ash:

I should be getting to class.

Amy:

We´re only ten minutes into the break.

Ash:

There´s some homework, I didn´t get done last night. I have to get it done before class.

Vicki:

What is it? Maybe I can help.

Ash:

It´s nothing, you should worry about. You two enjoy your lunch together.

Ash grabs her plate and glass, gets up and leaves them.

Vicki:

I don´t think, she likes me very much.

Amy:

Why would she not like you?

Vicki:

Because she feels like, I´m stealing her best friend ?

Amy:

What you and me have and what her and I have are completely different things.

Vicki:

I don´t think, she sees it that way.

Amy:

How about if you come to the Icehouse for dinner and the two of you can talk it out?

Vicki:

I don´t know. It feels forced.

Amy:

If I have to force you two to talk, I will. I can´t have my girlfriend and my best friend not talking.

She takes a bite of her food and looks resolved, as she chews.

Amy (voice over):

Vicki was right. You should never try to force these things.

12. Int. The Icehouse. Evening.

Amy leads Vicki to the table.

Amy:

Have a seat, pretty Mademoiselle.

Vicki:

Thank you.

She sits down.

Amy:

I´ll get you a menu. Ash should be here any minute.

She goes to get a menu and stops to chat with Bodie.

Amy:

Have you seen Ash? It´s not like her to be late.

Bodie:

Not yet.

Amy sees her come in and smiles.

Amy:

Hey. I´m glad, you could make it.

Ash:

Well, you did ask me nicely to come, so how could I say no?

Amy:

I invited one more person, so you wouldn´t have to eat alone.

Ash sees Vicki sitting at the table and looks annoyed.

Ash:

You can´t force me to be friends with her!

Amy looks shocked.

Amy:

I´m sorry. I just thought, that if you talked ...

Ash:

I would what? Immediately get on the "Vicki Fan Express", with you as the driver?

Amy:

Why don´t you like her?

Ash:

BECAUSE SHE´S STEALING YOU AWAY FROM ME AND THERE´S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT! IT ISN´T FAIR!

Ash starts crying and runs out. Vicki and Bodie come over to Amy.

Bodie:

Whatever you said, it was the wrong thing to say.

Amy:

I have to talk to her. She was really upset.

Bodie:

Go! Just don´t be too long.

Vicki:

I´ve waitressed before. I can fill in, while you´re gone.

Amy:

Thanks.

Bodie:

You´d better run, or you´ll never catch up with her.

Amy:

That´s okay. I know, where she´s going.

Amy leaves them. Bodie and Vicki make eye contact.

Bodie:

How much experience do you have?

Vicki:

One evening and I only had to serve and bust tables.

Bodie:

Let Allie take the lead. Just do as she says.

She nods and he gets her an apron.

13. Ext. Docks. Evening.

Ash is sitting on the pier watching the sunset, when Amy comes down to her. Ash turns her head and they make eye contact.

Amy (voice over):

This was so unlike Ash. I was really getting worried about her.

Ash:

I´m sorry, I caused a scene in the restaurant. Was Bodie mad?

Amy:

He was worried about you, like I am.

She sits down next to Ash.

Ash:

How many sunsets do you think, we´ve sat here watching?

Amy:

Countless ones.

Ash:

Now you´ll be watching them with her in stead.

Amy:

I still made time for you, when I was with Marco.

Ash:

Yeah, but this time it´s different. For one thing, we´re both childhood friends with Marco and we could hang out the three of us, all the time.

Amy:

You can still do that with Vicki! She likes you.

Ash:

I like her too, but I feel like the 5th wheel. I can tell, Amy. You´re crazy about her, in a way you never were with Marco.

Amy:

I´ll do everything, I can, to make you feel included. My life wouldn´t be the same without you.

Ash:

We both know, that will change, now that you´re becoming popular. I´m a quiet girl. That´s just how it is and I´m fine with it. But the quiet ones don´t hang out with the popular ones.

Amy:

Popularity wouldn´t mean anything, if it means, I lose you. What do you say, we have a girls night on Friday, just the two of us?

Ash:

Aren´t you partying with the cool kids on Friday?

Amy:

There´s only two girls in school, I think are cool and the coolest of them all, in my eyes anyway, is sitting next to me. What the rest of them think about her, couldn´t mean less to me.

She takes Ash´s hand and they watch the sunset together.

Amy (voice over):

We sat there and talked for almost half an hour, before we went back to the restaurant and they had their dinner. It´s a good thing, I have a very forgiving employer!
