LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART Chapter 1, Page 4
Dee and Rosemary went to Dorothy's home to gather their belongings and say goodbye. Dorothy gave them sandwiches to eat on the way home. So off they left sharing all that happened in school today.
Dee was very pleased with Rosemary's help that allowed her to work with the children who needed voice lessons. As expected most of the boys wanted to play instruments and only girls wanted to sing.
"Rosemary, having you with me today, made a big difference. I had time to work with those who wanted to have voice lessons. It was a rewarding class."
"My pleasure Dee. I was very happy to help. There was this little orphan boy, Paul who was watching the rest of the children gather around Miss Lillian and the piano, while he sat on the sofa. So, naturally I went over to talk to him. He was quiet at first, but I started to clap and asked him to clap every time I did. Pretty soon he was laughing and decided to join the rest of the children." Rosemary filled Dee in.
"That was very kind and intuitive of you!" Dee complimented Rosemary.
"Well he looked so lonely all by himself. I wonder how he wound up at the orphanage. I could tell he was unsure about himself, so I only hope he is okay." Rosemary wondered.
"Lillian would know. Maybe she'll tell you more about Paul next time." Dee offered.
Just then Rosemary slammed on the brakes and Lee's automobile spun to the side but didn't go off the rode. As the ladies hit the back of their seats very hard, they heard the car stop running. "Are you all right Dee?" Rosemary asked in a panic.
"Yes, I'm all right, but what happened?" Dee asked.
"Didn't you see the deer? It just ran out in front of us. I thought we were going to hit it. We were lucky we missed it!" Rosemary was very shook and so they took a couple of deep breaths and walked around the car to see what they could. They saw the skid marks and a poof of dust, but no deer.
"Wow, that was close! I forgot that autumn is mating season. We better keep an eye out." Dee suggested.
The rest of the ride home was uneventful. When Rosemary dropped off Dee, the sun was setting. "Thanks again Rosemary. Have a good night!"
Faith was surprised to see Dee too. She was just going to bed, and Dee soon did too.
Saturday morning and Nathan was out on his rounds when he noticed that Lee's automobile was back in town. Nathan instantly broke into a huge smile and was going to go down to see Dee when he realized it was too early. When he got home, Allie was barely up getting ready to work at the switchboard and Emily had the coffee on and starting to fry some eggs and cook up some bacon.
"Just in time son!" Emily greeted him with a hug.
"Smells great. I'm starving!" Nathan said as he poured a cup of coffee. "Looks like Dee came home early. Lee's automobile is back here. I hope everything is okay. I'm going over there after I eat this delicious breakfast."
Allie came down and greeted Nathan and Emily with a happy smile. "I have to work at the switchboard this morning."
Emily asked Allie to pick up some dish soap while there and a pound of butter when she finished work.
Nathan finished up, gave his Ma and Allie a kiss on the cheek and walked down to Faith's house. Faith was just leaving for town and told Nathan that Dee was up but hadn't come downstairs yet. "Let me tell her you're hear!"
Dee was dressed and her hair was all brushed and swept up. She wore a newly washed pink blouse and navy skirt. Nathan whistled as she walked down to him to give him a kiss and hug. "Surprise!" she laughed.
"Lady you are one lovely sight to behold!" Nathan grinned. "I'm glad you come home early!"
"Coming home early though, was my idea. "Let's just say I missed the quiet and comfort of my bed." she smiled. "We just about hit a deer on the way home. It was scary." Dee told Nathan."It was really a great help having Rosemary there. She walked the children who wanted to learn piano over to the Orphanage, while I gave voice lessons at school."
"That's what you hoped." Nathan nodded. "How's Dorothy and family?"
"I asked Dorothy to be my maid of honor and of course she accepted. She absolutely loved my engagement ring. Have you thought about who who want to be your best man?" Dee asked.
"Yes, I've been giving it some thought. I've got to ask Bill, he's been my mentor and good friend. I can trust him to have my back." Nathan said confidently.
"Great! He surely is one of your best friends." Dee nodded.
"I was thinking you might like to look at the dresses at the dress shop, so you can find a new dress to wear at the engagement dinner. My treat." Nathan suggested.
"Oh Nathan you know the way to butter me up!" Dee laughed.
"Would you like to go to town today?" Nathan offered. "I have to take Ma's sweets in to Minnie"
"Of course sweetheart!"
