Let Me Call You Sweetheart Chapter 3, Page 27
Dee had waited for Faith with a dinner plate she brought home from Emily, but had to get to bed before she fell asleep in the chair. Faith came in late and went straight to bed without touching the food.
The next morning Faith explained to Dee that she had stayed with Clara, who thought she was in labor with contractions, but then they stopped. It was a long night and Faith hoped she could stay awake the rest of the day.
"Dee, I really wonder why baby's decide to come at night. It's like they know we're ready to call it a day, and they do it on purpose!" she moaned. Then she laughed listening to herself and Dee joined her.
"I think they're just getting the moms ready to go without sleep!" Dee grinned. "As soon as Rosemary and Lee come, I'll be leaving. I'm teaching in Brookfield today."
"Lee is going?" Faith asked.
"Yes, they both want to spend more time with Paul. They filled out the paperwork and hoping that they are approved. If so, they want him to visit their home. So, you just might meet him. Fingers crossed." Dee called as she left to hop in the Coulter's automobile.
The conversation to Brookfield was non-stop. There was so much to discuss. Dee told them about Nathan's visit with the O'Neills and their ideas to help the family out. "Nathan is going to talk to Pastor Joseph today about visiting."
"Nathan asked me about employment for Rick, but we don't have work until spring." Lee shared.
"I suggested he check with Bill about helping Sam at Billees." Dee shared.
"That's a great idea Dee!" Rosemary agreed.
"I think I know why he wanted the three trees he asked for. I know one is for the town, one for Allie, Emily, and you, and one for the O'Neills!" Lee said emphatically. "My men are cutting them down this morning, in fact."
When they arrived in Brookfield, Lee drove to the school to drop off Dee. He and Rosemary proceeded to the Orphanage. They were both excited and hoping that they were approved. When Lillian opened the door to send the children off to school, Rosemary and Lee saw Paul and smiled warmly at him and said "Good morning, Paul!" He stopped and looked up at them and smiled broadly.
As the children walked over to town, Lillian invited Rosemary and Lee inside.
"Good to see you both! C'mon in and have a seat."
"Thank you Lillian. We're just so anxious to know if we've been approved." Rosemary spoke up right away.
"Well, you'll be very happy to know, that you have indeed been approved, and with flying colors besides!" Lillian grinned.
"Oh hallelujah!" Rosemary clapped.
"We want to take him home for an overnight stay if we can. Hope Valley is putting up our town Christmas tree and it'll be a fun social event." Lee explained.
"Sounds great," Lillian was agreeing. "When the children arrive for their piano lessons let's see how he reacts to you being here." Lillian suggested.
Lee walked with Rosemary to the school to help gather the children to take over to the orphanage for piano lessons. This time Paul was more at ease and stayed by Rosemary's side while Lillian had the children each take turns doing the scale on the piano. When it was his turn, he did the scale remarkably well. As soon as he was done, he went over by Lee who was sitting on the sofa and sat down. After the lessons were completed, Lee and Rosemary talked to Paul about coming home with them. Paul ran out of the living room and up the stairs. Lee and Rosemary were so disappointed. Lillian was comforting them that Paul needed to get used to the idea of leaving the orphanage and not to be discouraged. As they got up to leave to pick up Dee, Paul came running downstairs with a bag of clothes. "I'm ready!" he smiled.
"You are! So are we!" Rosemary said as she squatted and opened her arms. Paul ran right into them and hugged her back. Tears were welling up in Rosemary's eyes. Lee was getting misty-eyed too and Lillian was thrilled.
"Do you want to drive, Paul?" Lee teased.
"No, not this time, but can I sit in front?" Paul asked.
"Well, it's fine with me, that's up to Mrs. Coulter." Lee grinned. "Let's go pick up Miss Dee now."
Dee was happy to find out that Paul was returning to Hope Valley with them. "So, Paul, I bet you'll never imagine how tall our town Christmas tree is! Wait until you see it tomorrow!"
