Turning into the familiar street, Kate turned her mind towards her family. She was good at compartmentalising things, a skill she had learned to do whilst training for her undercover jobs.

So far on her journey home she had been stewing over the earlier events of the day. She had stood rooted to the spot, watching on in horror as Tony Gates had stepped in front of that lorry and was unable to look away as the inevitable happened.

"You ok?" Steve had shouted over to her, and she'd nodded hesitantly. He'd then turned his attention to the lorry driver who was sitting petrified in his seat. Kate watched as Steve coaxed him down.

The sirens of the cavalry in the distance had spurred her into action and she had turned her attention to Tommy Hunter who was making his displeasure at being a prisoner in Tony's front seat widely known. She'd wrenched open the passenger door as he continued his tirade. "Just shut up!" She'd shouted back before reading him his rights. He was soon being led away by a uniformed police officer to a mobile unit that had sprung up out of no where.

Taking a seat on the central reservation barrier, Kate was soon joined by Steve who took a seat by her side. "Is the driver ok?" Kate asked him, talking about the lorry driver who was being assessed by the paramedics.

"Still in shock but he will be," Steve replied.

"It all happened so quick," Kate said as her mind involuntarily took her back to the last few moments of Tony Gates' life.

"Umm, can I have a quick word before Hastings gets here?" Steve asked. "We should get our stories straight over what happened,".

"Shouldn't be difficult," Kate answered. "Tony Gates committed suicide,".

"Which means his family won't get anything,".

"I'm not following," Kate said.

"Tony asked me a favour before he…..stepped into the road.".

"What did he want?" Kate asked apprehensively, not liking where she thought this conversation was going.

"Say he died in the line of duty,".

"Steve! No!" Kate argued.

"You don't have to say anything. Just agree with what I say," Steve begged. "Please Kate. It's for his family. I think we owe him that," Steve argued to which Kate didn't her better judgement she found herself doing as he had asked when Ted and ACC Hilton had wanted to know what had happened. Steve had looked at her and she found herself backing his story up. She hoped this wouldn't be a recurring theme with Steve as her new partner as she much preferred doing everything by the book.

Pulling into her driveway she ordered herself to stop thinking about Gates. She would revisit her feelings on the matter when she was next at work. For the next couple of hours she was going to forget about it all and focus on being a mum to the little boy in the house in front of her. She would also try and be a wife to the man who lived there as well, if Mark was willing. Things hadn't been great between them before she'd left for her undercover job. They had barely been speaking and she hoped that it would be forgotten now she was back home.

Looking out the windscreen she saw the house was in darkness. It wasn't unexpected as it was fairly late in the evening and neither Mark or Josh knew she was arriving home. She had decided to surprise them as it had been too late to call when she realised the case was over. Getting out the car she quietly opened the front door, closing it and locking it behind her. Kate toed off her shoes and removed her coat and handbag, placing them on the bannister before climbing the stairs, remembering where she had to stand so they didn't creak.

Reaching the landing she couldn't resist peaking in her son's bedroom. He was fast asleep although his quilt was only half covering him. Padding over quietly to him, she gently covered him up before leaning over and kissing his warm cheek. As she continued to watch him sleep, she realised that maybe what Steve had asked her to do wasn't so bad after all. She would do anything for her son to give him the best chance in life.

Taking one last look at him, Kate closed the door behind her and made her way to her bedroom. As she got closer she heard a few moans originate from the room. It sounded as though Mark was having a bit of alone time.

She opened the bedroom door and found the room in darkness. Kate quietly entered, hoping not to disturb him before she could alert him to her presence. It was just as she started to undress that her world fell apart.

"Oh god, Mark!" She heard a female voice from the bed groan. It was only then that Kate became aware of the bed squeaking in a familiar rhythm.

"Jayne," Mark groaned.

Wanting to confirm her worst fears, Kate flicked on the bedroom light. There in front of her, in her bed was her husband with her friend Jayne Akers. "What the fuck is going on?" She demanded.
