For MyLadyKayo and the prompt: "You're the perfect height for me to rest my chin on your head."
A Scayo fic.
Scott was sitting at the desk as usual, engrossed in Tracy Industries paperwork. It was past midnight – also quite usual for the workaholic – and Kayo had given up trying to get him to come to bed. Getting Scott to stop midway through reports was harder than tracing her uncle's whereabouts…
She detoured via the kitchen and made the hot chocolate the boys favoured so much, adding a touch of pepper and cinnamon to theirs. Kayo carried the two mugs down into the sunken lounge and glanced up at Scott. His head was bowed in concentration, and he hadn't even noticed that she was there.
Kayo smirked to herself and made her way over to him. Standing behind him, she slid her arms over his shoulders and down his chest, clasping her hands together. She stifled a laugh at the start he gave on contact. Scott leaned back against her and Kayo rested her chin on his head.
'Oh, look, Scott. You're the perfect height for me to rest my chin on your head!'
There was no need to see the eyeroll that she knew Scott would be doing, and as his hand tightened over hers, she kissed the top of his head. It wasn't going to be often that Kayo would be in this position, the man was infuriatingly tall…not that she'd ever complain about that seriously.
Scott tilted his head and looked up at her, mischief clear in his blue eyes. Kayo raised an eyebrow, but before she could process any further Scott twisted around, hooked his arms around her and pulled her onto his lap. Kayo was laying across his lap, arms around his neck to keep her balanced. Scott grinned ferally.
And kissed her soundly.
He kept the kiss going as he shifted his arms, standing up with her cradled against him and carried her to bed.
…
Kayo was busy. She didn't get as much time as she would have liked to be domestic at all, but she'd exceeded her flying hours and was making the most of the opportunity.
The kitchen was full of the most gorgeous smells that reminded her vividly of her father, and Kayo smiled fondly as she imagined his direction as he taught her these and many other dishes.
Today was about her and Scott, but she knew that she couldn't ignore the rest of the family.
So there was Mee Goreng Mamak for everyone, just spicy enough so that everyone could partake.
But for Scott and herself there was also Ayam Percik as hot as she could make it on a bed of Lemang with some Cendol for dessert.
Kayo had also made plenty of Kuih Seri Muka, enough to feed even their hungry horde, and was about to begin some Apam Balik when she heard the sound of One returning. She dithered for a moment, wondering if she should go down and meet Scott, but decided that she'd better stay where she was. They all loved the Malaysian food that Kyrano had introduced them to, and she so seldom got the opportunity to cook anymore. Besides, he'd want to shower before changing, and by then the others would probably be back and ready to eat.
She hummed to herself an old lullaby as she gently beat the batter that had been left to rest. Pouring a ladle out to cook, she watched the batter begin to set and bubbles form before sprinkling over the sugar, peanuts and corn before covering to allow it to cook through, then folding them in half and placing on a plate while she made more. Kayo was only half-aware of Two landing, she was so involved in her cooking.
Hands snaked around her waist and a head rested on hers, and Kayo smiled. Scott's grip tightened a little before he murmured:
'You're the perfect height for me to rest my chin on your head.'
Kayo leant back against him, pretending to ignore the hand that had let go of its' partner and was reaching for a Balik. She waited until he was almost touching it before smacking it away.
Scott chuckled then bent to kiss her ear.
'Go lay the table for everyone.'
'Yes Ma'am!'
He kissed her cheek and left to do her bidding, and it wasn't long before the room was filled with brothers all talking over themselves and praising her cooking.
Kayo's eyes met Scott's and they shared a smile. What more did they need?
…
Scott hated that Kayo's job meant that sometimes he didn't know where she was or what she was doing. Meant that she put her life on the line to protect him and his brothers. But he couldn't deny that she was the best at her job, nor would he ever ask her to stop.
Didn't stop the worry, the fear.
This time Kayo had managed to set off her emergency transponder, and Scott had hauled ass – or more accurately One – to get to her, Virgil and Two hot on their tail.
Now all she needed was rest and to allow herself to heal.
Scott sat beside her, gently stroking her hair as she battled back to consciousness as their Grandmother watched over them and Virgil bustled around looking at Kayo's stats.
She woke up groggy and drifted off pretty quickly, and that set the pattern for the next several hours.
It was dark when Kayo woke up properly for the first time. Scott was asleep beside her, his arm across her hips and his head beside her elbow. She carefully extracted her arm, pleased when he didn't stir (which told her how exhausted he really was) and rested it on his head.
His head turned to see her, and their eyes met, and Scott smiled.
'You're awake. How are you feeling?'
'Umm…sore, I think. What's the damage?'
'Just brusing this time. No broken bones, but you're going to ache for a while.'
'Mmm.'
Scott sat up and looked her over. Kayo's smile was only slightly marred by the blue-black bruise along her jawline. She scooted over a little and he frowned at her.
'If it's only bruising then there's nothing to stop you joining me.'
He chuckled as she patted the bed, thinking of the eye roll Virgil would give them if he saw them curled up together, but he obliged her.
Sliding in behind her, Scott helped Kayo to turn so that he was laying behind her and she was back against his upper chest. He kissed the top of her head before resting his chin there gently.
Kayo lay back and sighed. She'd sleep better now, she knew she would. She turned her head to kiss his arm and murmured drowsily as he kissed her head again.
'Love you.'
'Love you too. Sleep, Kayo.'
'You too.'
…
Of course, that concern for how dangerous their jobs were went both ways.
The day that Scott disappeared from Five's scanners for half an hour had Kayo spitting bullets as Shadow screamed through the skies. It didn't help that Virgil and Gordon were across the other side of the planet, nor that Alan was up with John sorting out a pair of crashed cruisers.
On paper it was an easy rescue. Pick up two stranded climbers off a mountain. But there was a snowstorm heading in fast, and that was always a problem. Snow disrupted comms when it was really bad, and add that to the constant worry snow gave them all…
Yeah, Kayo was worried.
One was hovering where Scott had left her, EOS maintaining her position against the fierce winds, but Shadow could go lower, closer, could even land on the side of the mountain, and so that's what she did.
Kayo found Scott in a crevasse. Of the climbers there was no sign at all, and she filed that away to be dealt with later. There was no obvious signs of any injury, and as she ran the Medscanner over Kayo looked around to see if there could be an innocent explanation.
A few amber warnings for bruising and one for mild concussion meant she was safe to turn him over into the recovery position while she manoeuvred a hover-stretcher over. It was then that she saw the cause of Scott's fall.
There was a bullet hole in his jetpack.
She swore up a storm, enough to rival even John at his most colourful, and as various brothers checked in to find out what was going on, those sentiments were repeated. She cut the straps to the pack so that she could get Scott on the stretcher, placing the pack at his feet.
Getting Scott to safety was paramount, but ensuring that there was no one else around that would shoot at them was vital, and EOS ran scan after scan, boosting the signal as much as she could. When she gave the all-clear Kayo moved.
Thank goodness for Brains and his hover-stretchers. There would have been no way Kayo could have moved Scott on her own, but she managed to get him out of the fissure and back to where both ships were.
'EOS?'
'Yes, Kayo?'
'Can you pilot Shadow home? I'll use One as an infirmary.'
'I can do that. Virgil said he's on his way, ETA 15 minutes.'
'Oh, thank goodness.'
One might be Scott's pride and joy, but there was little medical equipment on board. She was the first response ship, with Virgil and Two bringing any medical equipment needed. But the basics One had would do since Scott's injuries were not life-threatening and Two was on her way.
He didn't stir at all as Kayo covered him in the foil blanket. She didn't remove his helmet, preferring to wait for a second pair of hands for that, and she listened as Virgil kept her updated on Two's arrival.
Virgil was a very welcome sight, and together they transferred Scott to Two's infirmary. John took over One and flew her home while Gordon got them in the air too.
Kayo reflected on the turnabout of events as she was now the one sitting beside Scott waiting for him to wake up. Virgil had confirmed that the concussion was only mild – thank goodness he had kept his helmet on – and there was a small lump on the back of his head.
It was later that same evening that Scott woke. Wincing at the pain in his head, he turned to see Kayo curled up in the chair next to him, engrossed in the tablet in front of her. He smiled at the sight, and it was almost as if she'd heard him smile as Kayo looked up. Her frown softened and she smiled in return and stood up.
'It's my turn to look after you, Scott.'
His smile turned into a wide grin and he shuffled over, patting the bed beside him. Kayo laughed, climbing in and Scott leant back against her.
She kissed his head before gently resting her chin momentarily on Scott's head and moving to rest her cheek on him instead. His hand tightened on hers before he drifted off again, head on her chest.
When Virgil walked in later that night to check on his brother, he smiled softly at the pair asleep on the bed, covering them over with a blanket and dimming the lights further.
…
Family movie night was something they all looked forward to. Once a month the GDF actually did their job and allowed International Rescue a couple of hours to have some down time as a family.
They all took it in turns to pick a movie, that way no one could complain if they didn't like the movie too much. It meant that they only had to watch Finding Nemo every six weeks…
This time it was Kayo's turn to pick, and usually they could all rely on a kick-ass movie. Tonight, however, she was in the mood for something lighter. With both her and Scott having scares over that last month, yeah…something a little more romantic…
There were inevitable groans from Gordon and Alan, but after both had been roundly cuffed by Virgil and John respectively, they all settled down to watch and eat the giant bowls of popcorn.
Scott and Kayo shared one couch. Virgil and John were on the other, Gordon and Alan on the floor. As the opening credits rolled and they settled down to watch they all became engrossed (except possibly John, he was watching and on his tablet, but this was not an unusual state of affairs…).
Gordon and Alan, as always, couldn't sit still for longer than ten minutes. But Kayo had chosen well. The film might be a little softer than they were used to, but there was still a huge element of action. Neither Scott nor Kayo noticed Gordon and Alan systematically sneak their way around until Gordon was behind Kayo and Alan was behind Scott. Virgil was keeping a weather-eye on them.
As Scott shifted, Kayo leaning against him, with both their heads resting on the couch, the two boys struck, each one throwing their arms around the chests laying their chins on the head of their chosen victim and reciting in very high-pitched giggly voices:
'You're the perfect height for me to rest my chin on your head.'
They'd needed to bend slightly to actually carry out the action, but both boys knew the value of self-preservation as both Scott and Kayo shot off the couch and after them.
Virgil and John were laughing as splashes sounded and the pair sauntered back in nonchalantly, hand in hand and grinning widely.
