Chapter Two
Noon
FBI offices
Charlie exited the elevator, feeling both anxious and excited, as it had been a while since he had been in the office since Don died, not counting a party they threw last month in Don's honor for what would have been his birthday. They are planning on doing the same thing for Walker in a few weeks, as his family were also still dealing with his death.
It was something that was helpful for everyone in attendance, as it plays a role in coping with Don and Walker's deaths and remembering who they were and not how they died. Everyone was skeptical when Megan suggested it but in the end, they knew she was right and they hope to do it every year for as long as possible.
It was something Charlie cherished, as it was one of the best things they had all done in a long time and it was helpful in him coming to terms with his brother's death. He knew Don didn't like to be the center of attention but he would have approved of them coming together and talking about their favorite memories of him and Gary.
Charlie moved his way to see Colby talking with Liz, who spotted him and Colby greeted him with a smile, clearly just happy to see his old friend and motioned him to go to the war room, where they needed to discuss the case.
"Hey, Whiz Kid, how have you been?" Colby asked, as he was still concerned for the younger man, as he wondered if it was too recent for him to come back but he was still grateful that he came in.
"Mostly okay, it just takes time, you know?" Charlie answered as honestly as he could, as he still felt down at times and thought about how seeing Bradford is somewhat helping him, as he was the best option for him at the moment.
"I know, Charlie, just take it one day at a time." Colby said, as he knew from losing his own father, that it takes a toll on a person and it takes time to work through the emotions and get on with life.
"So, what's the case?" Charlie asked out of curiosity, wondering why they needed him for this case.
"Well, the thing is, there seems to be no personal connection between the witnesses, though professionally they worked for the same company, albeit different departments, so it's unlikely that they would have run into each other." Colby said, as he showed his friend the notes and photos of what they had so far.
"So, it would seem random though there is no such thing as random." Charlie said, as he started to connect the dots.
"That and they were killed in the same way and the company they both worked for, like I said earlier, is being investigated for tax evasion, or rather, their CEO, John Larkin, is and it seems both of them had seen some of the illegal activity going on." Colby continued
"Larkin, that sounds familiar." Charlie mused, as he thought he had heard the name before but he couldn't place it.
"I thought it did since one of his grandchildren takes classes at CalSci, including one of yours." Colby answered
