It was later that night, Kya couldn't sleep, she thought about what her mother told her about how she discovered her healing abilities.
Kya had a wax candle in her room along with a pack of matches. Kya easily finds the matches, because the moon was half full but very bright, so Kya sparks the match and lights the candle and blows out the match. Kya sits at the side edge of her bed next to her night stand with the candle lit. Kya takes a deep breath and without even backing out she places her left hand in the candle's flame setting her hand there for 30 seconds she breathes to help her stay calm, but once she could no longer tolerate the pain she screams in pain. "Mommy! Daddy! Ow it hurts!" Kya screams as she shouts in pain.
Aang hears a child screaming like bloody murder. "Katara, Katara, sweetie wake up, I hear someone crying for help, they are screaming bloody murder!" Aang says shaking Katara trying to wake Katara up. "What?!" Katara asks half asleep. "Someone is screaming bloody murder in pain..." Aang says pausing. "MOMMY! DADDY! OW IT HURTS HELP ME!!!" Kya shouts. "Wait I think it's one of the kids." Aang says. "Yeah and it sounds like," Katara shouts. Aang s Katara gasp. "KYA!" Aang and Katara shout. "She screaming in pain begging for help." Aang says. "That doesn't sound good, let's go check on Kya, sweetie!" Katara says in a state of panic and worry. Katara runs as fast as she could to Kya's bedroom with Aang following her. Katara opens the door, she sees little Kya on the floor by her bed, curled up into a ball crying in pain holding her hand. Katara rushes to Kya. "Kya, what happened?" Asks Katara. "I had a nightmare." Kya says lying. Katara holds Kya tightly in her arms. "No, you didn't, I know you, so I want you to tell me why are you holding your hand?" Katara asks. "It's soothing." Kya says lying. "Give me your hands." Katara says. Kya refused, so Katara getting but forcibly grabs Kya's hand to see her left hand all red with splotches. "Aang!" Katara shouts. Aang was checking on Tenzin quickly, who was still sound asleep. Aang rushes to Kya's room. "What's wrong is Ky-Ky okay?" Asks Aang. "No, but look at her hands, and she will not tell me what happened." Katara says. "I think I know, because look sweetie!" Aang says as he points to the wax candle that was still lit. "Oh for crying out loud," Katara says gasping. "Kya, baby why did you light a candle and burn the palm of your hand?" Asks Katara. Aang sits down and gently taps on Katara's shoulder. "Sweetie you want to sit on my lap?" Aang whispers in Katara's ear. "Hold on Kya, can you give me a minute before you speak please?" Asks Katara calmly. "Yeah." Kya says quietly in fear. "Aang I'm busy, but fine, only because it's comforting." Katara quietly says. Katara moves over into Aang's laps. Kya scoochs over closer to her parents resting and leaning against her parents, Aang puts his right arm around Kya comforting her.
"I-- I-- I did it because, you said that when Daddy was trying to learn fire bending he did it wrong and the fire came towards you and you used your hands to protect your face and that ended up burning the palms of your hands and then Daddy's old master told you that you have healing abilities which you discovered, and so I thought..." Kya says stuttering to speak. Katara gets more comfortable she lays her body on Aang laying on her side and head on Aang's chest. "You thought that because I got burned on accident and discovered I have healing abilities that you should burn your hand on purpose in order to see if you have healing abilities, that you thought it was okay?" Katara asks in empathy and disappointment. Kya stays quiet as she was to afraid speak. "Aang sweetie can you stay here with Kya while I go get some water?" Asks Katara. "Yes, sweetie I will." Says Aang. Katara leaves the room to quietly go grab her water pouch, then went outside to collect some water from the pond and fill it into her pouch by bending the water.
"Kya sweetheart, can you tell daddy why you burnt your hands on purpose?" Aang asks, Kya innocently. "Because I wanted to see in some away on my own if I have the same abilities as mommy does, and I could not think of a way to discover my abilities, until mommy said that you burned her by accident, but I knew that would be mean if you or someone forced it upon me and I could not just wait until someone got hurt, so I found matches and lit my wax candle that you keep in my room, so I just decided to burn my hand to find out if I had mommy's abilities." Kya says. "Oh Kya, I know it's hard being young, but you must understand, that when it comes to your intentions, you can't just hurt yourself you must find a different solution, or be patient." Says Aang.
Katara returns and bends the water from her pouch into a bucket.
Kya puts her hands in the bucket of water, when suddenly Kya's hands begin to glow. "I...I... I have healing abilities." Says Kya smiling. "Kya, just because you have these abilities doesn't mean it's okay to burn yourself, and just so you know Kya, you are ground, so no water bending lesson for the next 2 days." Says Katara. "Come on Katara take it easy she is only 8." Says Aang. "Aang, she has to learn her lesson." Says Katara. "I get that but..." Says Aang, then he gets interrupted by Katara. "Aang, sweetie I'm sorry but we will talk about it in bed, so I will meet you there after I put Kya back to bed." Says Katara. "Okay." Says Aang. Aang and Katara kiss to let each other know they are sorry.
Katara puts Kya to bed and takes the candle and matches away from Kya. "Kya, I want you to know that I'm not mad or angry just slightly disappointed." Says Katara. "Okay, I love you mommy." Says Kya. "I love you too, sweetheart." Says Katara.
Katara leaves and heads back to bed with Aang and talks with him. "Katara we have to take it easy on Kya, because she is only 8." Says Aang. "Exactly she is 8 Aang, she is almost a young lady." Says Katara. "Katara hon, you still got to take it easy on her, she isn't Bumi." Says Aang. "I get that sweetie, but I don't want to discuss this anymore." Katara says. Aang and Katara go to bed.
