Chapter Ten

Next day…

Outside Larkin's office..

Colby was filled with annoyance as he walked into the man's office, as he had to wait for nearly an hour before the man would "be able" to talk to him, though he wondered if he was preparing for Colby to interview the CEO, which wouldn't surprise Colby in the slightest, as the guy is really slimy.

When he was in the room, he also wasn't surprised to see that Larkin had a lawyer present, meaning this was going to be harder than he thought, though he probably could still get some kind of answers from the man.

"Hello, Mr. Larkin." Colby said as politely as he could.

"Hello, Agent." Larkin said, not giving the same respect as Colby but the agent could care less as he also wanted this interview done with.

"So, Larkin, are you able to tell me where you were at the time two of your employees were killed?" Colby asked, getting straight to the point

"The first one, I was at a business conference, which was attended by dozens of people that I'm sure are able to verify that and the second one? I was at a retreat, which was attended by one of California's senators and a couple of other prominent lawyers." The man said smugly

"May I ask what the retreat was for?" Colby asked, first to find out if the alibi checks out but also to figure out if there was something going on there.

"Interpersonal relations, agent." Larkin answered cooly, "I know that it sounds ironic, due to some issues with my family, but I thought it was something that could help me in my situation with my granddaughter in particular."

Colby had to refrain himself from laughing, as he knew that there was no amount of personal training that could fix the man's relationship with his family members, given their history and he doubted that Larkin would actually listen to someone's advice about fixing relationships but that's not why he was here anyway.

"So, were you aware that there might be a potential leak of company information?" Colby had wondered about that but he wanted to see the man's reaction to the question.

He wasn't disappointed as he saw the anger rise out of the man, clearly thinking that he had complete control over his people.

"Why would any of my employees do that? Despite what you may have heard, my company is a great place to work and I have never received any complaints from anyone that has worked for me and I will soon deal with the ridiculous embezzlement charges soon enough, agent." The man said with a little bit of spite on the word "agent".

"All right then, Mr. Larkin." Colby said, as he wondered if this case would even make it to trial when an assistant came in running.

"Sorry to interrupt but Mr. Larkin, but we have a situation with one of our clients again."

"What is it this time?" Larkin asked

"He said that the money was still not up to his particular interests." The young woman said

"Fine, I'll call him back in a few minutes, Ms. Leeson." He said as the assistant nodded and left the room in a hurry.

"Agent, I'm sure you have other real cases to work on while I have some business to attend to, so we can take this up again some other time?" The man asked with a fake smirk on his face.

"Sure, just don't leave town." Colby said, annoyed about another delay in the case, though he silently wondered what the call could be about.

"Thank you agent, hope we don't see each other too soon." The man said smugly as he and his lawyer watched Colby leave the room before leaving it themselves.

As Colby walked out the building he noticed a strange car near the entrance with some suspicious looking people and made a mental note on the license plate to check out later, as he knew something was up and needed to find out what it was.

'Larkin knows more than he is telling, that's for certain.' Colby thought as he drove back to the FBI building, now more determined to catch a break on the case.
