"But all I want…is to be at his side…That's all I ask for…"
Year 907
The World
It had been 54 years since the Rumbling took place. Ever since then, the world has been in the spirit of rebuilding the flattened world. The Titans were gone and seemed to never return again. These 54 years have seen the fastest speed of economic and technological growth. New things seemed to be discovered every day. The birth rate has never been higher due to better medical facilities, low death rate, and mostly, people wanted to repopulate the earth again after eighty percent of humanity was wiped out. It was a good time to live in. After a long time of war, the world has begun to turn peaceful.
Or at least, it seemed that way.
During the initial years after the Rumbling, Paradis Island initiated many peace missions to other countries in hopes that they would stop considering Paradis as a threat since they turned against their own country in favor of humanity. The citizens of the island went forth to other nations and shared the horrors they faced behind the walls: the tales of how they lived fearing the Titans behind the walls and the suffering that the people had to endure after the walls were compromised. Paradis Island had taken up a large amount of the responsibility required to rebuild the world. It was a form of redemption on its behalf since the Rumbling was caused by a citizen of Paradis. It served to provide its natural resources and manpower on the queen's order to help the world rebuild. Despite all of this, their efforts failed to cure the sheer magnitude of the damage caused by the Rumbling. Millions of people saw their loved ones crushed under the Wall Titans: Parents, children, siblings, friends; they were just killed for no reason. That was something the people would never forget, much less forgive. Although various countries agreed to accept Paradis with a smile on their face, they hid their anger and desire for revenge like a knife held behind their backs. They knew that they couldn't retaliate at this point since they were still recovering. Patiently, they waited for the moment to wage war against the Eldians again. Secret treaties and alliances between countries began to form with one sole goal: Destroy Paradis once and for all.
This didn't mean the Eldians and Paradis Island led happy lives during this time. They were constantly subjected to discrimination and mistreatment by the people who remembered the terror of the Rumbling. In addition to this, the internal situation of the island wasn't stable either. The leaders of the island split into two groups: The Peacemakers and the Yeagerists. The Yeagerists were formed before his death for the man who started the Rumbling: Eren Yeager. The Peacemakers were founded soon after the Rumbling by Armin Arlelt, who was a close friend of Eren Yeager. The world believed that he was the one who killed Eren in the end to save the Earth. The Yeagerists supported Eren's decision to carry out the Rumbling and believed in restoring the Eldian Empire to its former glory. They believe that unless they take up arms and fight, they cannot protect their island from the outside world. This was before the Rumbling when the Eldians were still oppressed by other nations for their innate ability to turn into Titans and also because the world held a grudge against them for the many lives taken by the Fritz dynasty two thousand years ago using the power of the Titans in the name of conquest. They wanted to establish military rule and instill a spirit of aggressive nationalism among the people. The Peacemakers, on the other hand, aim to see the world as a whole and envision Paradis to exist with peaceful relations with the rest of the world. They establish peace missions and talks to various nations so that they can convey the intention that they mean no harm and only wish for the world to accept them as people instead of devils. They also aim to make the world aware of the lives led by the Eldians behind the walls before they collapsed.
The aggressive nature of the Yeagerists and the passive nature of the Peacemakers held opposite ideologies. They were in constant conflict with one another. The situation destabilized even further with the death of Queen Historia Reiss and the subsequent ascension of her daughter, Freida Reiss II. Unlike Historia, Freida was a weak ruler who wasn't well versed in ruling the country. Soon, the conflict between the two groups of the country turned into a power struggle for the throne. The fate of the island was very dangerously hanging…on strings.
