Just to clear up two things:
1. Annie is this Grade 4 kids that the boys kinda just adopted as one of their own.
2. Yes, Nate does have a Yo-Kai Watch in this AU. The joke is that neither party has any clue that the other has a watch.
Anyway yeah, here's Chapter 3.
Being sick is really, really crappy. But having a friend by your side to look after you makes it a little bit better.
Of course, it doesn't help if your friend happens to be a very overprotective, flighty Yo-Kai.
Nurse Tongus was up bright and early, as she usually was, and once again, she watched Mrs. Miriam and Mr. George pack up and leave for work without any acknowledgement of their son. She wondered if they even knew about Eddie being sick and missing school.
Well, not to worry. She was still there, and probably more qualified to look after Eddie than those two, anyway. She skittered back into the room, where Eddie was just waking up. "Oh, you're awake," she cooed. "Is your throat any better? Can you talk?"
"A little." His voice was hoarse and…Nurse Tongus supposed "crunchy" was the word.
"Well, a little is better than nothing," chirped Nurse Tongus. "Now come on, open your mouth."
Nurse Tongus went through her normal motions as a nurse; temperature check, throat check, and…well, that was really it. This job was pathetically easy, really.
So now what else was she supposed to do? Eddie was probably going to sleep most of the day, just like he did yesterday, and really, anytime he was sick. Well, she didn't want to be boredly waiting around fretting over any time his breath slowed for even a fragment of a second. She was going to have to find something to do.
She picked up a book that had been left askew on the shelf. Eddie had a hobbyist interest in reading old manga, and she believed she had once caught Mr. George sneaking a peek at them. She flipped it open, making sure to read it right to left, and found that she rather enjoyed it. These drawings were very detailed. In fact, she wanted to see if maybe she could replicate it.
She found a black pen and a stray bit of printer paper, and gave it a shot. She started by drawing the easiest target; herself. Man, she was so good at self-portraits.
Soon, she found that she was creating herself a story. Yes, a story about a little Tongus going on a little stroll in a little forest. A little bit charming; ironic for a Heartful Yo-Kai.
Once she started, she couldn't stop. She found some more paper, and the ideas were pouring out of her. Soon, she had about five pages worth. Ooh, this was so fun. She bet if she published this, every Yo-Kai around would love it!
Suddenly, there was a flitting around the window. Nurse Tongus looked up, and there was her little friend Shmoopie floating around on the porch. She slid the door open. "Oh, hello."
"Hi," tittered Shmoopie. "You're just hanging out with your human?"
"Uh huh," said Nurse Tongus. "He's just asleep now, so I've been writing my own manga to pass the time." She showed Shmoopie the pages.
"Aw, wow, that's epic," said Shmoopie. "You should so totally do this more often!"
"I bet I will," said Nurse Tongus. "It'll give me something to do besides worry all the time!"
It was around one o'clock that Nurse Tongus was finally able to show Eddie her manga-in-the-making. He sure did sleep a lot when he was sick; five hours! Sheesh!
"This part is my favourite," said Nurse Tongus, pointing to the drawing of the little Tongus in the daisy patch. "I love flowers. They're so pretty!"
"They are pretty detailed…" Eddie rubbed his eyes.
"You're still sleepy, aren't you?" A sluggish nod answer Nurse Tongus's question. "Well, that's alright. We can finish reading it later."
She nuzzled closely to her human companion, and they both drifted off into a gentle slumber. They didn't even hear the clunk of the mail slot, which Annie had slid that day's homework assignment through and then ran off, too shy to go in by herself.
