The next morning Tai had been sleeping peacefully like he normally would when he felt a sudden jolt poke him in the side. At first Tai just rolled over and ignored it as he kept sleeping. Then he felt a harder poke in the back. Upon feeling it Tai swatted his hand to shoo away whatever was bothering him. For a few seconds everything seemed normal until Qrow let out a sigh and and in irritation kneeled down right next to Tai and smacked him in the head. Tai jolted awake at this as he lets out a yell of pain.

"Ah! What the hell is wrong with you?" Tai rubs the bump starting to form on the top of his head.

"You need to get up already. We've got a bright and early day today if we're going to go hunt some deer." Qrow stands up and Tai notices that Qrow is already dressed and ready to head out.

Tai gets out of his own bed as he lazily shuffles over to his bag and begins sifting through it looking for the proper hunting attire he packed with him. "That doesn't mean you had to be a dick about it dude." Tai grumbles as he pulls camo clothing out of his bag.

"Well I tried to wake you up normally but you just slept their like a rock, and besides the only other option would've been to yell at you and I'd rather not spook any deer that may be nearby." Qrow exits the tent to go grab his rifle from the airship.

After Tai properly suits up for the hunt he exits the tent and closes it up. He then walks up to join Qrow who already has both rifles cleaned and ready to use. "So anywhere in particular you had in mind?" Tai asks as Qrow hands him his gun.

"We just need to walk around and look for any signs of deer around. You do know how to track deer right?" Qrow gives Tai a questioning look.

Tai thinks about it for a moment before he begins. "From what I remember from the little bit I've learned in our survival class, the best way to find a deer is by looking for hoof prints and droppings."

Qrow lightly shakes his head. "That is correct, but you forgot the most important part. Look for scratch marks on the bark of trees. Those are the signs of a buck nearby. Bucks not only have more meat on their bones, but also make an excellent trophy as well." Qrow informs Tai.

"Ahhhhh I see." Tai nods his head in understandment. "Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to activate my semblance while we're out."

Qrow looks over to Tai with some confusion. "I thought your semblance only made you better at fighting."

"Well yeah that's the main function of it, but I can also use it to focus on specific things as well. Normally this works in tandem with my fighting, but it can sometimes help when it comes to observation as well." Tai clarifies.

"I guess that makes sense." Qrow shrugs before waving for Tai to follow him. "Now come on. We've got a buck to bag."

"You got it bud." Tai claps Qrow on the shoulder as he follows behind.

After looking around in the woods for about an hour Qrow finds a clearing where a deer is grazing the grass. Qrow holds his hand out in a motion telling Tai to stop and stay quiet. Qrow slowly sneaks off to the side to get a better shot at his prey. 'Alright a six pointer.' Qrow internally smiles as he pulls his rifle up to take aim at the buck. He slides a water dust bullet into the chamber as he brings his eye into the scope on the rifle. He unclicks the safety lock as his finger rests on the trigger. Qrow breathes in slowly and deeply in focus as he takes his shot. As he fires his rifle the gun explodes in a combustion of water as Qrow's aura flares to protect him from his own weapon. The shot echo's through the forest as the buck runs away.

"Holy crap Qrow are you okay?!" Tai quickly runs up to Qrow to try and help him as he seemed to still be reeling from the explosion.

Qrow coughs a few times as he looks over to Tai a little bit disoriented. "I'll be fine." Tai helps Qrow up as he gains more consciousness.

"What happened?" Tai looks worried.

"My gun misfired and the bullet exploded in the barrel. I blame my damn semblance for this crap." Qrow swears out. "More importantly there goes our meal." Qrow states with some frustration.

"It's okay dude I can go track down and shoot the next one instead." Tai reassures him.

"Fine... just be sure to hit the neck when you take your shot. It's the most efficient way to get the kill. Don't want the animal suffering before it dies." Qrow informs Tai.

Tai nods his head. "Got it."

As the two walk in the woods some more Tai asks Qrow about the misfire. "So I noticed you used water based dust bullets. Any particular reason why?"

Qrow just looks at Tai before he explains. "Water bullets are fast and smooth. They flow extraordinarily well for hunting. Fire and Lighting would end up blowing an animal up which is not only overkill, but also kind of ruins the meat. Gravity is too weird, Earth would make it a bitch to clean all the debris out of the meat, and wind wouldn't penetrate their aura as wind is too light."

"Sometimes I forget that animals have aura too." Tai admits.

"Most people do." Qrow empathizes.

After that their is another lull in the conversation and almost another hour later they are able to track down another buck. This time the buck is in the company of two doe's nearby as Qrow gestures for Tai to go for the kill.

Tai gives Qrow a thumbs up before he activates his semblance as he quietly sneaks around to get a better shot.

Qrow observes that the buck in question was a ten pointer and even better than the one from earlier. 'On top of that this one looks older which means that it's going to taste even better.' Qrow quietly licks his lips. 'Tai you better get that shot.'

As Tai takes aim with his rifle and unclicks the safety lock, Tai slides a water bullet into the rifle. As Tai's finger hovers over the trigger he cranks his semblance up to max as he focuses solely on hitting his target. Everything feels like slow motion as Tai pulls the trigger and the bullet shoots out of the barrel. With the crack of his gun the bullet hits the buck dead center in the neck as the buck falls over. The two doe's immediately run away.

Tai deactivates his semblance and stands up. "Bullseye."

Qrow walks over to Tai and claps him on the back. "Good job Tai. You just hunted one mighty fine trophy I'd say." Qrow pulls out a knife and outstretches it to Tai. "Now let's get this thing gutted so we can take it back to eat."

Tai looks down at the knife then back up at Qrow with a questioning look on his face. "You mean I have to cut this thing open?"

Qrow rolls his eyes. "Well duh, you need to get it cleaned out before we can eat it properly."

"Well then why not gut it after we get back to camp?" Tai questions.

"Because it will be a lot heavier lugging the deer around so by gutting it now it will be lighter to carry with you. Now hurry up and get cutting." Qrow presses the knife closer.

"Oh alright fine." Tai gets the knife and gets to work.

An hour and a half later after Tai cleaned the buck, he and Qrow carried his kill back to their camp. Once they got back Qrow went through the arduous task of skinning the deer and cutting the meat up to be eaten. Qrow put the head of the deer in one of the ice chests they brought along to preserve the head as Qrow was definitely turning it into a trophy. When Qrow was cutting up the meat he made sure to put a few slabs in another ice chest as he remembered that Summer wanted some. On top of that, even though she would never admit it to anyone else, Raven also enjoyed the meat that Qrow would bring.

Once Qrow came out of the airship with two steaks prepared, Tai had already gotten a fire going in the pit that Qrow had built the previous night. As Qrow brings the two steaks out on platters Tai looks at the steaks in confusion. "Hey Qrow, where is the seasoning? Those steaks look pretty bare."

"Well normally I don't season my food too often. Spices aren't usually things I bring with me." Qrow comments.

"In that case it's a good thing I'm around then. I brought some seasonings with me before we left just in case." Tai stands up and begins opening up their tent. "I'll be right back. Let me go get them."

"Don't wait too long. We haven't eaten in nearly a day and I'm starving." Qrow comments as he sits down on the makeshift seat.

A moment later Tai returns with his seasonings and quickly applies them to the steaks. Qrow then puts the steaks over the fire and begins to slowly cook them.

They sit their for half an hour in relative silence as Qrow slowly cooks the meal. After he is done cooking he places the two steaks on plates and hands one to Tai. "Eat up."

"Thanks Qrow." Tai gives Qrow a thumbs up as he grabs for the plate. As the two eat their steaks Tai realizes that the way Qrow cooked the steaks was incredibly rich in flavor.

At the same time Qrow realized how much better it is to season the meat before you cook it. "You know, I wasn't expecting seasoning to make this big of a difference in taste." Qrow comments absentmindedly.

"It can really help compliment and enhance the flavor. Although my steaks don't usually taste this good either if I'm going to be honest with you. How did you get it to taste this good?"

"It's all about technique and how you cook it." Qrow takes another bite as he continues to eat. "Cooking it slow and making sure to periodically turn the steak is key to drawing out its flavor. Although it did help that the buck you shot had also aged well."

"Wait age helps a meat taste good?" Tai questions as he continues to eat.

"Sure does. If the animal is a bit older its meat will normally taste richer. That helped quite a bit." Qrow eats more.

"Say where did you learn to cook like this anyway?" Tai asks.

"Well... my dad taught me." Qrow responds which gets Tai's attention.

"But didn't you say that your dad passed away when you were like four?" Tai questions.

"Well yeah he did, but then my grandad taught me how to cook this way. When I asked him where he had learned to cook that way he had said he learned it from my dad. So in a sense I learned from my dad through my grandad. If that makes sense."

"Makes sense to me buddy." Tai continues to eat.

"So how'd you learn to season so well? Was it from your dad?" Qrow asks.

"Actually I learned that from my mom." Tai smiles.

"Really?" Qrow looks at Tai surprised.

"Yep. Back in Patch my mother owns a little restaurant that she runs. Nothing fancy, but modest and quaint. I always helped around whenever I could, and a few of those times were with the cooking. I'd say I'm a pretty okay chef if I do say so myself." Tai smirks to himself.

"Sounds like you're the opposite of my sister then. Raven couldn't cook to save her life." Qrow shudders at the memories of his sister's atrocious cooking.

"So what you're sayin is that Raven likes a man who can cook?" Tai asks.

"Tai I don't know what my sister likes." Qrow shrugs. "I guess she would. Why do you ask, you interested in her or something?" Qrow continues to eat as he was expecting Tai to laugh it off. However all he got was silence instead. Qrow looked up with a questioning look.

"Weeeeeeeeeell..." Tai scratches the back of his head with a light blush on his face.

Qrow just slaps his forehead in exasperation. "You've got to be kidding me. What could you possibly see in her?"

"Well... she's beautiful, strong, and fiery. I kind of dig it you know?" Tai awkwardly shrugs. "Although I'm surprised that you're not upset over it."

"Honestly I feel more bad for you than I do for her." Qrow shakes his head.

"So you would be okay if I... asked her out?" Tai asks hopefully.

"Knock yourself out." Qrow then gains a mischievous grin. "Actually I think it would be funny to see her reaction."

"Do you have anyone you're interested in?" Tai continues to eat more of his meal.

"Nope." Qrow confirms as he continues to eat.

"Not even Summer?" Tai lightly presses.

"Why does everyone think I've got the hots for our leader? Sure she's a nice girl and all, but I'm not really looking for a relationship right now." Qrow answers honestly with some irritation.

"Man you are so strange. It's like you don't have interest in anyone."

"I'd rather just get through school and kick some ass while doing it." Qrow shrugs.

"If that's what you want." Tai drops it.

The two finish their meal before Qrow gives instructions for what they were going to do next.

"Alright we still have plenty of light left. Let's go look for a river or a lake or something so we can have a place to fish tomorrow."

"Sounds good to me." Tai gives Qrow a thumbs up.

"Then let's get going." After Qrow and Tai tidy up their camping spot a little bit they head out to search for a body of water.

Qrow and Tai decided that the most efficient way of discovering a body of water was to use the airship to float into the air and scope out any bodies of water nearby. Qrow had decided to drive this time seeing as their was no way his semblance could mess up something as simple as staying in place as the two spotted a stream south of where they were set up. Once Qrow landed the airship and the two got off they decided to check out the stream to gauge how far away it was. In the short of things it took them half an hour to travel to the stream where the two would take a quick bath before heading back to camp.

Overall their first day out camping had been a success in Qrow's eyes. "You know, I think we did pretty good for our first day out here."

"I can't believe I bagged my first deer!" Tai excitedly exclaims.

Qrow looks at Tai with surprise. "You mean to tell me that was the first time you had actually hunted?"

Tai nods his head. "Yep. Turns out that the concentration part of my semblance is more useful than just making me a better fighter." Tai stares down in amazement at his hands as he felt overjoyed knowing that their was more to his semblance that even he was aware of.

"I wish my semblance was good for something." Qrow sighs.

"Oh cheer up Qrow, your semblance is good at catching people off guard. Think of it that way." Tai tries to cheer him up.

"Hard to think that way when sometimes it's more of a demerit to me than it is to my opponent."

Tai isn't sure what else to really say as even in his mind he really couldn't see too many positives to having a semblance like bad luck. "In any case I had a lot of fun today and I can't wait to go fishing tomorrow."

"You know I'm surprised you are actually having fun doing something like this. I thought you were going to get bored with all the walking and staying silent we've had to do." Qrow states.

Tai takes those words in for a moment before he responds back to Qrow. "You would be right, at least partially. Although I do think all of this in between stuff can be pretty boring I do think that the major parts of this trip make it all worth it. Things like our conversations, the hunt itself, the cooking; Those are the moments that count and make this entire trip worth it. Plus I feel like I know my bro a bit better now y'know?" Tai shrugs.

"Yeah, I guess I can see what you're saying." Qrow finds himself smiling. 'Huh, I guess I'm enjoying this as well.'

"But next time it's my turn we're probably going to do something a bit less taxing like hit up an arcade or something." Tai grins to himself.

"That place has... games right?" Qrow confusedly asks.

Tai gives Qrow a serious look. "You mean you don't know what an arcade is?"

Qrow rubs the back of his neck. "Well I've never spent enough time in any of the major cities, but I think I've heard it be mentioned once or twice in the tribe if my memory serves correctly."

"Oh yeah you and me are definitely hitting up an arcade next weekend. Prepare yourself for fun games and mediocre food!" Tai exclaims.

After that little conversation the rest of the day went by with very little else happening as the two eventually went back to sleep as they rested for the next day.

The next day Qrow and Tai didn't have to wake up nearly as early as their would be no need to get to the stream too quickly. Qrow as usual had woken up before Tai and had taken a few slabs of their steaks out to cook as a breakfast for him and Tai before they left. Qrow remembered the seasoning and after half an hour of grilling some steaks Tai had woken up to join Qrow. Once the steaks were done Qrow and Tai ate them and then went to get into some more proper clothes for the day. After that Qrow got both of their fishing rods and Tai would carry a cooler which not only held the bait for fishing but also doubled as storage for any fish they caught. It would take the two a bit longer than yesterday to get their since they had to carry all the other supplies with them, but they still got their in the afternoon.

Qrow then turns to Tai. "I think this is good enough." Tai puts the cooler down and Qrow hands him a pole.

"Alright so how do we do this?" Tai asks.

"Just put some bait on the end of the hook and cast your line out. If you feel a tug than start reeling in. Plain and simple." Qrow puts some bait on the end of the line and casts it out to show Tai what he means.

Tai understands and places some bait on the end of his own hook as well and casts his line out.

Their is silence for a while as neither of them had anything to say to the other. That is until their is a snag at Tai's line. "I got something!" Tai shouts in excitement.

"What are you waiting for? Reel it in!" Qrow shouts back.

Tai reels his line in as he feels the line grow more and more difficult to reel in. "Agh! It's starting to resist! I've... got to... lift harder!" As Tai lifts with all his strength the line struggles fiercely under Tai's strength as he activates his semblance to begin pulling harder.

'Holy crap what kind of fish did he catch?' Qrow internally thinks as Tai slowly but surely continues to reel in his line.

"Come on! I can do it! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!" Tai uses his strength to lift with all of his might as his catch comes out of the water and lands on the ground next to them.

Tai looks at his catch with shock and Qrow holds in a laugh at what Tai caught. "Heh. Congratulations Tai, you caught a log." Qrow pats Tai once on the back. "Truly a rare and elusive catch."

"B-but it fought back so much." Tai says in disbelief.

"Correction, it was a heavy object that you dragged out of the water." Qrow snickers to himself. "Looks like my bad luck rubbed off on you this time."

"Maybe that means you'll have better luck with fishing now since your bad luck was on me." Tai realizes.

"Perhaps." Qrow simply responds. A few minutes later their is a snag on Qrow's line as he reels in a decently sized fish. "Looks like I've caught my next meal." Qrow opens the cooler and puts his fish in it. "Once you catch yours we'll be able to head back."

"You got it Qrow." Tai then fishes for about twenty more minutes until he finally manages to catch a fish of his own. Once he caught his own fish Tai put it in the cooler. "Looks like we're ready to go."

Qrow gives Tai a thumbs up as he carries the fishing poles while Tai carries the cooler back to their camp.

A bit later after Qrow and Tai return to camp, Qrow cuts up the fish to prepare them. Afterwards Tai would season the meat before Qrow cooked it. Qrow then cooked the meal for the two of them. The two ate their meal in relative peace as neither spoke during the meal. As the two were finishing up their meal Qrow finally spoke.

"Hey Tai, listen here for a sec." Tai turns his head towards Qrow and nods in acknowledgment to signal Qrow to continue. "After we finish up here let's begin packing up to leave seeing as we have school tomorrow."

Tai simply gives a thumbs up as he continues to eat.

The two don't take very long to finish their meals as they get to work putting everything away. Unfortunately Tai ends up hearing something in the woods while Qrow is busy taking things out of the tent. Tai becomes worried when he hears some roars coming from the forest. He nervously turns his head to talk to Qrow. "Uh Qrow? I think we should hurry up." Tai warns Qrow.

"I still need about five more minutes. This would go a lot quicker if you were helping though." Qrow responds back.

Tai quickly runs over and begins helping Qrow pack things up as he hears the roars coming closer. He can also hear the sounds of the leaves rustling. "What do you think that is?" Tai quickly asks Qrow as the two continue to pack up.

"From the sounds of it... my guess would be an Ursa. It shouldn't be that big of a deal if it's just an Ursa Minor. We can probably handle it even without our equipment."

Tai doesn't feel as worried when Qrow tells him that. "Sounds good. I've already killed one of those with just my hands, so I can probably do it again."

Right when the two are beginning to pack up the tent something giant emerges from the woods behind them that was much bigger than an Ursa Minor. Qrow took one look and cursed. "Shit it's an Ursa Major."

Tai looked over to the beast as it ran right towards them. Tai stopped what he was doing and ran right towards the creature. "Qrow cover me." Tai ran right at the Ursa Major as the giant grimm swiped out at him. Tai activates Precognition as he dodges to the side of the swipe before punching the Ursa right in the face. It seemed to have little effect on the creature as it bit down on Tai's arm. As the grimm tried to crush his arm, Tai's aura flared as he quickly punched with his other arm into one of the eyes of the grimm as it let go of him. Tai followed up with a series of kicks to the skull of the creature which only pissed it off more as it stood on its hind legs to show off its massive size as it came down on Tai. Tai used his strength to hold the Ursa's arms in place as it tries to snap at his head with its massive jaws.

While this was going on Qrow ran back into the airship and pulled the only good rifle off the wall and ran back out to see that Tai and the Ursa are at a stalemate. 'I really hope my semblance doesn't interfere.' Qrow hopes. Qrow quickly loads in a few bullets as he aims his rifle at the Ursa's head. Qrow ends up missing the head when he fires, but he does hit the shoulder of the Ursa as it is knocked back enough for Tai to quickly overpower the bear-like creature and send it on its back as Tai unleashes a flurry of stomps with his semblance activated which begins to sink deeper and deeper into the body of the Ursa. The Ursa flops around a bit to get Tai off it as it charges right at Tai and swipes with its massive paws. Tai dodges and punches the Ursa square in the jaw causing it to be momentarily dazed.

'I hope that semblance of yours works for what I'm about to do.' Qrow shoots a bullet right at Tai as Tai senses it and dodges away as the bullet hits the Ursa in the same shoulder as before which this time tears the arm off as it begins disintegrating. The Ursa charges Qrow as best as it can as Qrow runs to avoid being chomped by the mighty creature. The Ursa catches hold of Qrow's cape in its mouth as it yanks Qrow towards it and holds Qrow down with its one good paw as it tries to bite Qrow. Qrow isn't nearly as strong as Tai as he lodges the rifle into the Ursa's mouth and holds it off as best he can. His strength gets weaker and weaker as the Ursa begins to crack the rifle. Tai jumps on the bear-like creature's back and tears one of its spikes off of its back and climbs his way up to the head as he stabs with the cracked spike full force down on the head. The first stab begins to crack the skull. The second shatters some of the skull. As Tai raises his hands up for the third strike the Ursa breaks the rifle as Qrow is forced to use his hands to keep the Ursa away.

"TAKE THIIIIIIIIIIIISSSS!" Tai stabs down with all his strength as he drives the spike right through the flesh of the Ursa as Qrow can see the spike coming through the mouth from his angle. The Ursa slumps over as Tai jumps off it and Qrow crawls out from underneath it as the two pant heavily and watch as the Ursa Major disintegrates.

"That... was one hell of a fight." Qrow tiredly remarks.

"Sure was..." Tai deactivates his semblance as he also catches his breath.

"Let's hurry up and finish packing up so we can get the hell out of here." Qrow walks back over to the tent as he begins taking it apart.

"What about the gun? It broke during that fight. What will we tell the people back at Beacon?" Tai asks as he begins to pick up the pieces of the broken gun.

"Easy, we tell them the truth. An Ursa Major attacked us without our weapons and it broke during the fight. They can't really be too mad at us if we almost died." Qrow then leans in closer to Tai. "Although between you and me I think we handled it pretty well." Qrow finishes packing up the tent and puts it back in the airship. Tai puts the destroyed rifle pieces in a corner and Qrow takes the handle.

"Are you sure it's a good idea to let you drive?" Tai asks in slight worry as Qrow buckles into the drivers seat.

"Yeah, I think my Misfortune is currently on down time right now. We should be fine."

Tai buckles in and gives Qrow a questioning look. "What do you mean by 'down time'?"

Qrow starts the engine as he takes off back towards Beacon. "It's kind of the mechanics of my semblance. Think of my semblance like a gauge. As time goes on this 'gauge' slowly builds up. As it fills up the more likely it is for my semblance to activate. I have no control of when or how it will activate, but the longer I go without my semblance activating the more likely it is too activate. On top of that the severity of the bad luck will increase alongside this waiting period." Qrow looks over to Tai. "Are you still following?"

Tai nods his head.

Qrow continues. "Since my semblance is one of those types that is always activated I will always have this 'gauge' building up even when I'm not in combat. However I can also pour my aura into my semblance to make this 'gauge' increase even faster. This lets me activate the bad luck even more often even though I'm still at the mercy of when and how it will activate. It's pretty good for one-on-one fights, but I might end up hurting my own teammates if I use it around you guys."

Suddenly it all clicks in Tai's head. "Ah now I see. So that's why you fight the way you do. You want your opponent to make a mistake and then use your semblance to make it even worse on them. Am I right?"

"You would be correct. At least somewhat." Qrow responds. "The reactions of your semblance actually end up dodging most of my bad luck, so good for you."

Tai puffs his chest out a little and smiles brightly. "I AM pretty good at what I do."

Their is then a quietness that envelops the two before Qrow finally says something else. "Thanks for helping me back their."

Tai casually waves it off. "Nah it's all good dude. We're friends. Friends have to stick together and watch each others backs."

"Friends huh..." Qrow gives it some thought.

"What did you never have friends before?" Tai more jokingly asks. Qrow stays silent as that was all the confirmation Tai needed. "Damn, sorry for bringing it up."

"Nah it's fine. Back in the tribe we valued our strength more than our bonds. We never really had much time to make friends you know? The closest thing I had to a friend was Raven, but unfortunately she follows the tribe motto more than I do." Qrow sighs.

"Didn't you say that she did care deep down a few days ago?" Tai questions.

"That's just it. It's deep down. Raven can't show emotion like that or rather she doesn't want to. Although I can't say I really blame her though considering all the pressure on her shoulders." Qrow responds.

"What do you mean?" Tai looks at Qrow with concern. 'What kind of burdens is my partner carrying on her shoulders?'

Their is a pause as Qrow thinks it over. He closes his eyes, sighs, and opens them back up. "That... is something you will have to ask Raven about yourself. Raven would kill me if I told another person about her insecurities, and I'd like to at least be a decent sibling to her." Qrow responds back.

Tai thinks it over for a moment before deciding to relent. "Alright I understand, but I will do anything I can as Raven's partner to help her through with whatever she has to deal with."

"I hope so." Qrow more says to himself than to Tai.

Tai then changes the conversation to a lighter note. "Buuuuuut... we are friends, right?"

Qrow focuses back on flying as a small smile makes its way onto his lips. "Yeah... we're friends."

After that the rest of the trip was rather mundane as they made it back to Beacon at sunset on Sunday. Tai had a fun time over the trip and Qrow, in truth, did as well. The two would look back on this memory as the beginning to a great friendship between the two that would last for many, many years to come.

to be continued...
