It took Summer and Qrow less than an hour to set up where they would be camping. They chose to stay close to where they would be picked up as they didn't want to waste any time when their ride arrived tomorrow evening. Once camp was set up the two huntsmen-in-training went to begin performing their task. As it turned out, the mission description was not lying about their being a large influx of Taeus in the area. Just from where they were camping alone they could spot hordes of them just floating around at the outskirts of the opening.
"I really wasn't expecting their to be this many." Summer comments.
"Neither was I." Qrow comments back. Qrow then pulls his sword off of his back and turns it into scythe mode. "But it's not like they're that much of a threat to begin with, so I think we'll be fine."
"True enough." Summer parts her cloak as her two guns glimmer at her sides. "Lets get to work shall we?"
"How about we make things more... interesting." Qrow rests his scythe across his shoulder.
"Oooooooh... I smell a competition." Summer begins to grin with excitement.
"With a side of wager." Qrow grins.
"You know I'll be game when it comes to killing grimm. What do you have in mind?" Summer asks as she pulls her pistols up into a ready position.
"Whoever kills the most grimm gets to make the loser do any one thing that the winner wants."
Summer rests her chin on the top of one of her guns in thought at that. "Sounds good to me. Although I hope you know who you're up against. After all killing grimm is my specialty." Summer lets her gun rest down at her side once more.
"That's what makes it fun on my part." Qrow brings his scythe down into an attacking position as he hunches forward, ready to strike. "I get a challenge."
"Oh it's on now Qrow!" Summer gets into a position ready to begin firing off bullets.
"Bring it Summer!" Qrow faces towards the horde of Taeus that are just harmlessly floating around. "3... 2... 1... GO!" Qrow sprints off right towards the Taeus as Summer wasn't too far behind. Summer begins to unload her bullets upon the unsuspecting grimm as they begin to evaporate from being shot at. This alerts all the Taeus in the area as they begin to slowly fly towards Summer and Qrow. Summer begins quickly reloading her pistols as Qrow jumps at the hoard and slashes horizontally which kills at least three of them. Qrow spins his scythe and begins mowing through the Taeus like their nothing. Summer didn't let up as she began unloading another volley of shots at the Taeus as she noticed that Qrow was killing them at an alarming rate. Summer decides to put her skill at the gun to good use as she begins lining up her shots to pierce through multiple Taeus per shot.
When Summer looks back over to Qrow she sees him slashing back and forth between left and right chops as Qrow kept plowing through the Taeus with little effort. Summer begins to hear a buzzing sound coming from behind her as she turns her head to see that more Taeus are coming out of the forest as hundreds of the bee-like grimm begin to surround them. Summer begins piercing three to five Taeus at a time with each bullet as she continues to quickly reload more bullets and continues to hold off all the grimm behind them. "Wow this place is in serious need for some pest control." Summer loudly states as she continues to open fire.
"That's why WE are here." Qrow slashes at some more Taeus as they just keep disintegrating. "To make sure that these pests are dealt with!" Qrow continues to hack and slash at the Taeus.
Summer shoots even more Taeus as she turns too Qrow. "Good thing we're so good at are job eh?"
"You're damn right about that." Qrow responds. "Man I haven't had this much fun in ages! I can see why Raven loves to fight all the time, this really gets the blood pumping!" Qrow excitedly exclaims.
"Yeah I'm starting to wonder why I ever felt any worry to begin with, this is WAY easier than I was expecting." Summer comments as she continues to shoot more and more grimm.
"I told you you had nothing to worry about." Qrow does another series of spins as he blows the Taeus away. "These guys are piss easy. I can't believe this wasn't a D-class mission all things considered."
"This was probably considered C-class because of the sheer volume of Taeus. Plus we are only half of a team and we have to camp outside as well." Summer unleashes another volley. "At least that is my interpretation."
Qrow then laughs a bit maniacally which catches Summer off guard. "What's so funny all of a sudden?" Summer asks her partner.
"I just remembered how lame Raven's job is right now and how she's probably standing around doing nothing while we get to do what she wanted to do!"
"Excuse me miss, do you know where the atm machine is?" An old lady with a purse walks up to Raven.
Raven grits her teeth and tries her best to give a smile which slightly unnerves the old lady at how terrifying Raven's smile looked. "Right over their ma'am." Raven points a little too aggressively at a corner of the room where the atm machines were.
"Thank you sweetie." The old lady briskly walks off as Raven continues to try her hardest to put on a smile which just makes her look more like a psychopath than someone who is actually happy.
Tai cups his hands and loudly whispers to Raven. "Raven, you need to work on your smile. You're scaring away the clients."
Raven sends a pissed off glare at Tai. "I'm trying Tai, but this is so damn hard."
"Just relax your face a little." Tai tries to offer.
"Like this?" When Raven rests her face she sports a large frown and creased eyebrows which just makes her look more upset.
Tai sighs. "This is going to take some work."
Several hours later it is now night time as Qrow and Summer sit across from each other at a campfire as both of them quietly eat their meal that they packed with them. They were both sweaty and tired from the days work, but other than that they were fine. Neither of them got stung by the Taeus during their entire extermination spree.
"How many do you think you killed?" Summer asks as she continues to eat the food out of her can.
Qrow puts his food down for a moment and leans back in thought of that question. Qrow closes his eyes and thinks hard about his answer. "I'd say I killed about... two hundred and thirty seven." Qrow opens his eyes to look at Summer who currently had her hood down. "How about you?"
"It seems I may be a little bit behind in that case." Summer lowers her head in defeat. "I've only killed about two hundred and four." Summer perks her head up however. "But I will not admit defeat yet! There is still one more day, so if I try reallllllly hard then I might be able to pull out a narrow victory."
Qrow smirks at this. "Fat chance partner. I'm not going to slow down, plus all that reloading that you do only wastes time that could've been used to kill more grimm."
"Even with that being the case... I still refuse to admit defeat." Summer points at Qrow. "And I will defeat you no matter what!"
'In one ear and out the other.' Qrow internally thinks. "Riiiiiiight." Qrow drawls out. Qrow decides to speak his mind a bit. "Why are their so many of these things around anyways? I thought grimm are only created by negative emotions."
Summer tsks Qrow and waves her finger at him. "Negative emotions do not create grimm they only attract them. We don't know too much about how grimm are born, but from my own personal experience on Draco I do know of one way in which grimm can be born."
Qrow seemingly forgets his old question as this information seemed interesting to him. "How would you know how grimm are born if not even scientists have been able to fully explain it?"
"That would be because Draco seems to have an unnaturally high number of grimm, even by the rest of Remnants standards." Summer responds.
Qrow's curiosity gets the better of him as he can tell their is clearly a story to this. "Well... how are they made then?"
Summer leans in closer as the fire paints her face with a soft orange glow which gives her eyes a mysterious look. "Now I've only heard of this from the elders of my village as the younger members of the tribe are forbidden from going, but from what I understand their is a massive pit at the top of the highest mountain on Draco called Mount Tenebris Foraminis and apparently that is the birth place for all grimm on the continent of Draco. According to what I have heard, at the top of that mountain lays a large black pool that is constantly forming and birthing grimm. The few people that are allowed up their and who have spoken of it describe it as a place of pure misery, fear, and death. They say that nothing grows up their as everything is barren rock from the strain that this pit of death emanates."
Qrow was invested in this story but he had his doubts. "As interesting as that sounds I can't really see it to be honest. If you've never even seen it then why believe what the village elders say?"
"That is where you would be wrong. Even though I haven't been to the top of Tenebris Foraminis that doesn't mean that I haven't at least seen the black liquid. You see that pool also has many black rivers that streak down the mountain. Even though none of them pose any major threat to the tribe they can still be dangerous. It just so happens that I've seen the streaks that came down from the mountain a few times. I've even seen one poor soul try to touch the liquid. He nearly died from the liquid trying to spread through his body and he would've if they didn't amputate his arm. That stuff is dangerous and can easily kill a human if they come into contract with it, even if you have aura."
Qrow suddenly thinks back to an odd case from the creatures they fought at the beginning of the semester. "Even if that were to be the case, that still doesn't explain those creatures we fought at the beginning of the year. You say that the black liquid kills people, but the people inside of those creatures were still fine. I mean sure they were dead, but their bodies seemed pretty normal."
"Don't you remember what the headmaster said to us back then? He said that those were caused by a parasitic grimm that could latch onto people." Summer reminds her partner.
"But that doesn't explain why they were able to use aura and even something that looked like dust. Grimm are supposed to be mindless killing machines, how would one be able to do all of that? Something about that explanation just sounds off to me." Qrow counters.
Summer looks away and thinks about it. "You do make some valid points... however we just can't explain how it works right now. Their is just so many oddities with these creatures that we just don't know." Summer shakes her head.
"Man this stuff is just too weird for me. I'm going to bed." Qrow gets up and pulls Harbinger onto his shoulder as he walks towards the tent.
Summer turns around to watch Qrow leave. "Goodnight Qrow." Summer calls out to Qrow.
Qrow stops for a second with some hesitation as he is frozen in place at those words. Just as quickly as he does it he continues onward without a word. Summer is then left alone as she quietly watches the flames of the fire and lets Qrow's words sink in. "Just what are those creatures?"
Not long after Qrow went to bed Summer put out the fire and went back to the tent to also get some shut eye. Once she entered the tent she set up her sleeping bag and began to crawl in when she realized how close Qrow was. Summer started to flush again as it was considered taboo to sleep near another man who wasn't directly related to her back in her tribe. 'Uuuuuuuh this is so embarrassing.' Summer pulls her sleeping bag up to cover most of her face as she blushes even more. 'Calm down Summer calm down. Qrow is your partner and friend. This isn't weird at all. Just think about it like its back in the dorms... Yeah! Just think of it like the dorms. This is just a smaller area with less people.' Summer turns around to face away from her partner as she tries to go to sleep. 'Yes... it's working. I can feel myself getting sleepier. See? I knew I could handle this.'
It would take another hour before Summer would fully fall asleep.
The next day Summer would wake up before Qrow to do her daily training as she always would before Qrow woke up a bit later on. The two would have a quick meal before heading deeper into the Forever Falls to continue to exterminate more Taeus. As they ventured deeper into the forests they would kill more Taeus they came across until they found something interesting.
As Qrow and Summer made it to the bottom of a cliffside they found some humongous black hives that looked almost like stalactites hanging off the side of the cliff. Qrow looked at them with some amazement while Summer smiled to herself.
"Huh. I didn't know that these things actually made hives." Qrow says more so to himself.
"They sure do." Summer replied.
Qrow then got an idea. "Seeing as these are hives I would be correct in assuming that they contain honey as well correct?"
"That would be correct yes." Summer nods her head in response.
"Is it possible for me to eat it?" Qrow asks.
"I would not recommend that." Summer shakes her head as she turns her head to face her partner.
"How come? Is it toxic?" Qrow asks as he turns his head to also face his partner.
"Yep. You have to keep in mind that these are still grimm at the end of the day. Their honey is extremely toxic as it was filtered through their bodies. You would die if you ate more than a table spoon of it. It's ironically the most dangerous part about Taeus."
"What makes that ironic?" Qrow asks.
"That the most dangerous part is also the most avoidable thing they have." Summer replies.
After staring at it for a few more moments Qrow pulls his sword off of his back. "Welp guess it's time to do our jobs."
Summer gives Qrow a questioning look at this. "How are you going to reach it? You don't have a gun like I do." Summer twirls her guns out of their holsters as she pulls them up into a ready position.
"That is where you are wrong Summer." Qrow then holds the button at the end of the hilt of Harbinger and quickly flicks it downwards as the blade portion of the sword flips ninety degrees and two shotgun barrels sprout from the end of the handle. "Behold... my newest upgrade."
Summer looks at it in awe. "That's... so cool! I've never seen a sword turn into a gun. What gave you the idea?"
"Well I realized that I'm kind of a sitting duck if I'm fighting an opponent who is out of my range. So my solution was to get a gun. However I thought it would be odd for me to just randomly carry a gun at my side when I already had a weapon that could turn into a Sword and a Scythe, so I thought to myself 'Hey why not try to add a gun to Harbinger?' Once I had that idea I started getting to work on it asap. That's what I was doing before I trained with you and it was a miracle that I got it done before midterms. This new shotgun mode is just a prototype though so I'm not sure how well it will work."
"I guess that explains why you didn't use it yesterday." Summer states before she suddenly turns a slight bit sour. "Wait a minute... did you say that this gun is a shotgun?"
Qrow realizes the sudden change in Summer's demeanor as he looks at her with confusion. "Yeah I did. Do you not like shotguns?"
Summer dramatically throws her arms up. "UUUUUgggggghhhhhhh... Shotguns are the worst type of guns Qrow!"
Qrow feels a bit insulted by that. "What's the problem with using a shotgun?"
"Shotguns require no skill at all to use as they are just spread shots that are bound to hit something. Combined with the fact that they also have a very short range for a gun means that they are extremely inefficient at killing things farther away." Summer explains.
"Look Summer, a rifle or pistol barrel wouldn't work because of how heavy the blade at the front is. Plus I'm not nearly as skilled at using a gun as you are, so cut me some slack for choosing an easier gun to use ok?" Qrow tries his best to cross his arms while holding Harbinger.
Summer still pouts in annoyance before accepting Qrow's reasoning. "Fine, but just get better at using guns alright? I think a rifle mode would go a long way with you."
"Oh yeah? Then why don't you use a rifle Summer?" Qrow questions.
"Because a rifle holds less bullets than two pistols, I need to focus even more to use them, and because they take up more space making them harder to use in a conventional fight." Summer lists off her reasonings.
"Fine, fine I'll admit defeat this time." Qrow admits.
Summer smiles. "Good. Now let's get shootin, we've got hives to get rid of." Summer points her pistols towards the hives as Qrow does the same. Without warning both shoot at the hives as the massive hives begin to fall to the ground with a resounding thud as hundreds of Taeus swarm out and look pissed off at having their homes destroyed. "Today I shall beat your score Qrow!" Summer shouts as she begins unloading on the grimm.
"In your dreams!" Qrow flicks the gun back to sword mode then immediately turns it to scythe mode as he goes on a killing spree against the Taeus.
Raven was just standing around keeping guard as she surveyed the area. 'This job is so damn boring. I barely survived the first day and now I have to survive another one? AAaahhhhhhhh...' Internally Raven was dying of boredom, but on the outside she had a calm and serious look on her face as she kept guard. It was another busy day at the bank and Raven had to make sure nobody looked too suspicious.
While Raven was keeping surveillance Tai tried to help some of the people out with their problems. Tai mainly did this because he thought it was good to help people with their troubles. Plus it alleviated some of the boredom from doing this lame job. 'I've already helped three people today. Counting the eight people I helped yesterday means I've already helped eleven people in total. I should aim to raise it to twenty!' Tai positively thinks. 'I can do it. I just know I can.' Suddenly Tai feels a tugging at his pant leg of his security uniform. Tai looks down to see a worried child. "Why hello their little boy. Do you need help with something?"
The child looks up at Tai and asks in a worried voice, "Can you help me find my mom, mister? I lost her when we were waiting in line." The child looks a bit abashed.
Tai looks down at the child with a warm smile as he outstretches his hand to offer it. "Sure thing little man. I'll help you find your mother. Come on, let's go look."
The child looks down at Tai's hand and hesitates for a moment before looking at Tai's smile and deciding to trust him. "Ok. Thank you mister." The child takes hold of Tai's hand.
"You can call me Tai kiddo." Tai states. 'Looks like my count went up to twelve now.' Tai grins to himself. This job may have been boring, but at least Tai found a way to pass the time.
Later on Summer and Qrow are looking for more hives like the ones they found at the foot of one of the cliffs. Qrow has a sour look on his face as Summer had edged ahead of him during that last skirmish with the Taeus and was now leading by eight. 'I really need a way to edge out Summer.'
Unfortunately for him Summer quickly raises her hand signaling for Qrow to stop and stay quiet. Qrow looks at Summer with some confusion as he sees Summer quickly reaching for her pistols. Qrow steps a bit closer as he quietly whispers to Summer, "What are you doing?"
Summer yet again gestures for Qrow to be quiet as she slowly points her hand towards a large tree up ahead. At first Qrow sees nothing. But the more he focuses on the tree he sees something large and scaly slowly slither around the tree. As Qrow looks up he can barely make out the coloration of grimm bone plating around the skull of the massive serpent.
'Oh great. One of these things.' Qrow sighs. Qrow then pulls Harbinger off his back as he slowly lowers it into an offensive position. Summer begins to quietly sneak towards the tree and Qrow follows close behind. 'Knowing Summer she's going to want to get rid of it. Which means we're in for a serious fight.' Qrow internally thinks as they get closer and closer. As they get closer both students get a look up into the tree as up in the canopy of the great tree they begin to see the white half of the giant serpent's body which it was hiding to camouflage itself.
Summer slowly raises both of her pistols and focuses as much as she can. 'I cannot mess up these shots. Otherwise this fight will be much more difficult than it needs to be.' Summer aims each pistol for each of the eyes on the black half of the serpent as she intends to blind it before the fight begins. Unfortunately for Summer, she did not take her partners semblance into consideration. As soon as Summer put her fingers on both triggers a bird flies out of a nearby tree and lets forth a mighty caw. The distraction makes Summer lose her focus and she ends up shooting both guns and both miss their mark on the great serpent. The serpent hears the gun fire and immediately begins descending from the tree as its massive body lands on the ground and both heads turn to face the pair.
"Looks like we're going to have to do things the hard way." Summer reels back her guns. "Qrow are you ready?" Summer asks.
"I've been waiting for this to begin." Qrow turns his sword to scythe mode as he stands next to Summer, ready to strike. "This is a King Taijitu right?" Qrow asks.
"Oh definitely, these are one of the only grimm species to have a completely white body instead of the usual black... at least for the other half." Summer acknowledges.
The black head begins to charge them as it tries to chomp down on Summer, but Summer turns her body to petals and quickly reforms on top of the giant serpent. Summer begins unloading shots on its body as it begins to be skewered with holes. The white head begins to charge right at Summer, but Qrow jumps up and slashes at the right head which slices into it a little bit while also pushing the trajectory of the attack off which ends up causing the head to hit the ground near Summer.
Summer hops between the two heads as she unloads a shower of bullets down on both heads of the giant serpent. The bullets sink into the black flesh of the beast, but the King Taijitu didn't seem too bothered by it. The white head snaps up to try to chomp at Summer, but she yet again bursts into petals and begins to reform on the ground as she begins reloading. Meanwhile Qrow glides across the serpent's body as he slashes across it with Harbinger which leaves gashes all throughout the top of the serpent. However Qrow was distracted with his handiwork as the black head takes a giant bite out of him which sends a hit to his aura as he is thrown aside by the grimm. Qrow lands on his feet as he regroups with Summer.
"Got any plans leader?" Qrow asks.
"Yes. Kill it." Summer simply replies as she begins to unload more shots into the face of the black head of the serpent.
"Sounds good to me." Qrow responds as he dashes right back at the white head.
Summer runs right in front of the black half of the King Taijitu and jumps up as she aims her pistols for both eyes of the great serpent. Of course the grimm opens its mouth to yet again to attempt to swallow Summer whole. Summer quickly raises her leg up and pours as much of her aura as she can into her leg as she kicks the head down hard enough to snap its jaws shut for an instant. In that instant Summer takes her shots and completely blinds the black half of the body.
Meanwhile on the other side Qrow continues to slash at the white head of the serpent as it tries to attack Qrow, but Qrow keeps evading its attacks. Qrow had been pouring aura into his semblance in anticipation for when it would activate. When his semblance activated he made sure to capitalize on it. The King Taijitu's white head ended up smacking into a nearby tree with enough force to uproot it. In that instant Misfortune activated as the tree came crashing down on the white head. Qrow strikes at that moment; he runs up to the fallen tree and jumps on it. As he jumps over he latches the scythe around the top of the neck of the white head and in one fell swoop he decapitates the head from the body.
The white half of the snake convulses and spazzes about before it slumps over and begins disintegrating. "Looks like I dealt with my half. I wonder how Summer is doing?" As Qrow turns around he sees Summer running right towards the black head.
Summer begins shooting at the head to get its attention. The snake turns around clearly upset at that, and tries once more to bite Summer. That would be its ultimate undoing. Unlike the other times, Summer didn't dodge this time. Instead she turned her body to petals and entered right into the mouth of the creature. As all of Summer's petals entered the creatures mouth she reformed her hands and pistols inside the mouth of the creature as she began unloading round after round into the top of the head.
From Qrow's perspective he saw the bullets exiting the top of its head as the giant serpent slumps over and begins disintegrating. As Qrow walks up to the black half of the King Taijitu he sees two blades cut through the flesh as a shower of white rose petals slump onto the ground and begin reforming back into Summer. "Ok I have to admit: THAT was pretty badass Summer." Qrow whistles and raises Harbinger onto his shoulder.
"Why thank you very much partner." Summer gets up off the ground as she dusts herself off. "I can't believe I thought of that. It was crazy! But also exhilarating..." Summer puts a hand to her chin.
"Maybe you could incorporate that into your style?" Qrow suggests.
"I could... but it would be awful to use against other people. I don't know if I could do that." Summer shivers. "The thought of that makes me sick."
"To each their own I suppose." Qrow comments.
"Ew." Summer cringes at Qrow's implication. "Anyways lets keep going. We still have more hives to clear." Summer continues on her way as if fighting a giant serpent was completely normal.
Qrow follow along. "Right. Of course. How could I forget." 'Man, Summer doesn't get phased by anything.' Qrow thinks internally to himself.
For the rest of their day the two huntsmen-in-training would continue to slaughter as many Taeus as they could. But eventually it was time to leave the Forever Falls. After packing up their camping supplies Summer and Qrow would board their airship back to Beacon.
Sumer slumped into her seat with a happy, yet tired smile plastered on her face. "We did it... we finished the mission..."
Qrow slumps in the seat next to Summer as he perches his arms on Harbinger in its blade form. "Damn right we did. We killed over a thousand of those little shits."
Summer slightly frowns. "Do you have to swear so much?"
"I just think it's a good way to describe humanity's greatest foe." Qrow turns his head to look at his partner. "Wouldn't you agree?"
"I suppose..." Summer has to reluctantly agree.
"Plus if you can't handle my swearing then you definitely can't handle Raven's." Qrow adds on.
"Fair point." Summer agrees more willingly this time. Summer then sports a big dopey grin on her face as she closes her eyes. "I won the contest by the way."
"No need to remind me." Qrow lowers his head slightly. "Alright lets hear it. What do you want me to do?"
Summer kicks her feet back and forth a few times in thought over it. "How about... a raincheck for now."
Qrow lifts his head to look over at his partner. "What? Got nothing in mind at the moment?"
"Precisely." Summer nods her head. "Why waste such a good reward on nothing? I'll save that favor for when I need it." Summer adds on.
"If that's what you want to do then I have no problems with that." Qrow lays back in his seat.
Summer smiles as she looks over at Qrow. "Thank you for understanding Qrow."
Qrow looks over and gets a small peak at Summer's eyes. "Sure thing Summer. Sure thing."
The air ride back to Beacon was a relatively quiet one as both members of Team STRQ were simply happy that they finally made it through their first semester at Beacon.
Meanwhile back in Vale the other two members of Team STRQ had just finished their second and last shift at the bank. Tai and Raven handed in their uniforms and left without saying much of anything to the staff their.
"Damn am I glad to be done with that stupid bullshit." Raven tiredly says.
"You and me both." Tai exhaustedly agrees. "I could really go for a drink or something right now."
"Don't you have to be a little older to go to a bar?" Raven asks.
"Normally yes... but if you're a huntsmen-in-training you can get them a bit earlier." Tai informs her.
"In that case we're definitely hitting up a bar after we confirm that we passed our mission." Raven agrees.
"We should invite Summer and Qrow too seeing as they should be getting back at about the same time." Tai informs Raven.
"Ha! My brother doesn't drink at all. He says it tastes like crap." Raven sighs.
"That just means he hasn't had the good stuff yet." Tai counters.
"Exactly." Raven nods her head once.
"Then it's planned. After we all confirm our completion we hit up the town for a drink to celebrate a good first semester." Tai begins to liven up a bit more. "Now that sounds like fun."
"Hell yeah!" Raven pumps her fist up with what looks to be a toothy smile.
Tonight was going to be one hell of a night for Team STRQ.
to be continued...
