Chapter 37 The Southern Lights

Korra smiled as her daughter didn't want her to leave.

"Oh sweetie." Korra said as Sean laughed as he held Junior who snored.

"Your gonna miss this when they get older." Sean said.

"Oh I know. Are you sure you won't come with?" Korra asked.

"Uh let me think...No." Sean said making her scoff in amusement.

"You'll never change." Korra said.

"I'd have an easier time winning a battle against a thousand by myself rather than work with him. Forget it." Sean said making her smile kissing him.

"Ok. I'll be back soon." Korra said as she left.

"Ok you two." Sean said putting them down.

Later

Korra arrived at the stables seeing Unalaq getting things ready before approaching her.

"Your early." Unalaq said.

"Let me make myself clear. I'm only here to help my people and to keep the twins safe. None of your spiritual enlightenment is all that matters crap." Korra said making him sigh.

"Very well I understand." Unalaq said.

"Now what do we have to do?" Korra asked.

"In order to calm the spirits down you must set things right. And the only way to do that is travel to the South Pole." Unalaq said.

"Why? Whats there?" Korra asked.

"You will find out soon enough." Unalaq said.

Later

Korra was getting everyone ready on Naga when Asami walked to her.

"So where's Sean?" Asami asked.

"Uh...He's not coming." Korra said.

"Why not? What did Unalaq do to him?" Asami asked.

"Well, when we were kids he tried to take both of us but failed. When he couldn't get me he tried to take him by force and he choked him out of anger. He's had it out for him ever since." Korra said.

"Oh I get it. I can't blame him for that though." Asami said.

"While not as bad as Hiroshi he's still not a good person." Korra said before two speeders came up to them showing Tarkin and Tonraq making Unalaq frown.

"What are you two doing here?" Unalaq asked.

"I heard your taking Korra to the South Pole. We're coming with." Tonraq said.

"Absolutely not! Your both a distraction to her." Unalaq said.

"You make it sound like it's your choice. It's not." Tarkin said.

"Listen Governor." Unalaq said.

"Thats Grand Governor to you." Tarkin said firmly.

"Relax both of you." Korra said walking to them. It's just a trip to the South Pole. And even if he wanted to pull something he would fail." Korra said.

"I am not trying to pull anything. They're being ridicules. All because of one incident." Unalaq said making Tarkin frown.

"What incident?" Korra asked.

"It doesn't matter what does is the Everstorm." Tonraq said.

"A massive blizzard that has battered the south pole for decades. I'm coming, unless you think you can stop me." Tonraq challenged his brother who frowned.

"HEY! GUYS! WAIT FOR ME!" Bolin yelled driving to them on a high tech speeder.

"What the hell?" Mako asked.

"Check it out. I'm traveling in style." Bolin said before turning the throttle on before stopping. "Sorry, still getting used to that throttle." Bolin said.

"Where in the world did you get that from?" Korra asked.

"From Varrick. You know the guy Asami went to ask for help helping her company because of her father. He also gave me this fancy snowsuit. It's inflatable with an internal heater, emergency beacon, and foot ration pouch. I mean, if I get lost, I can survive in this thing for like a month." Bolin said.

"Oh for the love of. You don't need that. This is a small trip and thats it." Korra said walking away before Eska walked to him.

"Does this Speeder have capacity for two passengers?" Eska asked.

"Sure does." Bolin said placing a hand on the back end of it. "But, uh, who's gonna drive?" Bolin asked.

Later

Bolin had an annoyed look on his face as he walked next to the speeder that Eska and Desna were now driving. (Oh thats even worse than Cannon)

"Well, what do you know? Looks like." Mako tried to say.

"Go away, Mako." Bolin said annoyed.

Unalaq and Korra were up front of the others.

"So once we get to the South Pole, then what happens?" Korra asked

"You will open an ancient spirit portal." Unalaq said.

"I'm sorry. What now?" Korra asked confused.

"At the South Pole, there is a portal that connects our world to the spirit world. But it has long been closed." Unalaq said.

"And thats why evil spirits are attacking?" Korra asked.

"There are no evil spirits. There is light and dark in all of them. But when they're unbalanced, the darkness takes over. If you can open the portal in time, balance will be restored.

"What do you mean in time?" Korra asked.

"Theres a reason the glacier spirits festival ends on the winter solstice. Thats when the spirit world and the physical world are close together. Only the Avatar can open the portal." Unalaq said.

"But thats tomorrow." Korra said.

"Exactly. And we can't afford to wait another year." Unalaq said.

Suddenly however Naga started growling.

"Easy, Naga." Korra said calming her down before looking out seeing what was making her act up.

"What are those?" Bolin asked terrified.

"Dark spirits." Korra said before they vanished.

"Lets keep moving. We have to find a safe place to set up camp." Tonraq said.

Soon enough they set up camp and were around a fire.

"Uncle, why do you think dark spirits are following us?" Korra asked.

"The Spirits are angry because he's here." Unalaq said pointing at his brother shocking her. "Haven't you ever wondered how your father ended up in the South Pole? Why he's never taken you to visit his homeland in the North?" Unalaq questioned.

"Unalaq, this is not the time." Tonraq said.

"You're right. You should have told her a long time ago." Unalaq said.

"Whats going on? What are you not telling me?" Korra asked making him sigh.

"I left the North Pole because I was banished." Tonraq said shocking her and the others.

"You were banished from the North? Why?" Korra asked.

"Because I almost destroyed the entire tribe. 20 years ago, I was a general in the northern water tribe, Sworn to protect my people. Then one day a group of barbarians attacked the tribe. We fought back and forced them out. We tracked them down to a sacred forest thinking we would never dare to attack on sacred ground. They thought wrong." Tonraq said.

"From the sounds the sounds of things you clearly doing what you were supposed to do." Korra said.

"I was. We took them down and captured them but in the process we destroyed the forest. The next night angry spirits came at the tribe. Unalaq was able to control them from destroying the tribe and returned them to the forest. But the damage had been done and my father banished me from the Northern water tribe and I made my way here." Tonraq said.

"Do you not see now? It's people like him that cause nothing but suffering." Unalaq said.

"Thats funny coming from a murderer." Tonraq said shocking him.

"What?" Korra glaring at him.

"N-Nothing. Don't listen to him." Unalaq said.

"Tell her. You say what I did was horrible...At least it was an accident. But what you did was intentional and far worse. I'm not gonna hide it anymore and father's not here to save you this time." Tonraq said making him sweat knowing this could compromise his position.

"What is he talking about? What did you do?" Korra asked picking him up.

"Korra, Please calm down. It's not what you think." Unalaq said.

"Then explain it to me." Korra said.

"I...I can't." Unalaq said.

"You had your chance. As you know he's someone who thinks spiritual enlightenment should be practiced by all. But a group of people suggested we should stop worshiping spirits because of the trouble they caused in the past. There have been plenty of examples of why before. The worst before hand was that face stealer who took one of the Past Avatar's lovers for a laugh. But Unalaq took it too personal." Tonraq said.

"What did you do?" Korra asked glaring at him.

"He murdered them and their families." Tonraq said shocking her and the others while Tarkin frowned.

"Is that true?" Tarkin asked.

"I was furious by their suggestions and let my anger dictate my actions! I wasn't thinking clearly." Unalaq said.

"You were thinking the same way you always do. About yourself and yourself alone. He killed them, Men, Women, Children and infants. Father had to cover it up or we would face ridicule and swore me to silence or I would be banished regardless. And I hated it every single day." Tonraq said.

"WHY YOU!" Korra yelled enraged as she went into the Avatar State.

"Korra please!" Unalaq tried to say.

"We're done. I will not open the portal! And you will be facing charges by order of the Legion. AT ONCE!" Korra roared as she spoke in thousands of voices.

"But the portal!" Unalaq yelled.

"I DON'T CARE!" Korra roared dropping him as she cuffed him. "We're going back. And you can kiss your entire tribe goodbye." Korra said pissed off.

"Please. You don't understand. If we don't solve this problem here and now. It's only going to get worse." Unalaq said.

"How do we know your not the one causing all this?" Korra asked.

"I'm not." Unalaq said making her glare before she dropped him.

"I need a minute." Korra said walking away.

"I think I know what she's doing. Keep an eye on him and these two." Tarkin said walking after her.

He soon found her in a mediative stance.

"Your going to ask one of your past lives for guidance. Aren't you?" Tarkin asked.

"As Much as I wanna tell him no. I need some opinions from the other Avatars." Korra said.

"That I Understand." Tarkin said as she went into her mind to connect with the others.

Soon She found herself in a white plain.

"Korra." Aang said appearing before her.

"Aang. I need to know what to do. Should I do what Unalaq asks...Or not?" Korra asked.

"Even though he's spiritually balanced he's not the kind of person you should trust period. Sean's mistrust in him is well placed. It's not just because of his grudge from 14 years ago but his instincts as well. That has served him well over the years." Aang said.

"So I shouldn't help him?" Korra asked.

"That is for you to decide. But perhaps someone who lived longer than me can give you more advice." Aang said as Roku appeared.

"Avatar Roku." Korra said.

"I know exactly what you are going through. You remember that Sozin and I were once great friends before his war." Roku said.

"Yeah. You two were like brothers for a long time." Korra said.

"And when he told me his plans to expand the Fire Nation...A part of me was considering it. But I knew right from wrong. Not just as the Avatar but also as a Human being. I knew there would be complications with this ideal. War would be inevitable since there was no way the other nations would just let him expand into their nations. Unalaq perhaps may mean well but there are many unknowns to his plans." Roku said.

"What do you mean?" Korra asked.

"It is unknown as to why the portals were closed. But if only the Avatar can open them then it clearly means an Avatar of the past sealed it for good reason." Roku said before Kyoshi appeared in his place.

"Avatar Kyoshi." Korra said looking at one of the best.

"Unalaq reminds me of Chin the conquerer. His ideals are selfish and only focuses on his own needs rather than the needs of others. Granting him what he wants would only spell disaster." Kyoshi said.

"So you think I should leave the portal alone?" Korra asked.

"I believe the portals are clearly meant to be closed for a reason. He knows something and he won't reveal it. And clearly not only does Kruger know something is wrong but so does his father. He knows something as well something he's keeping to himself for a good reason." Kyoshi said before Kuruk appeared.

"Avatar Kuruk." Korra said.

"In my day there weren't people like him that much. However he is wrong about spirits. Not all spirits are good when balanced by light and dark. Every spirit makes a choice. The one who took my love made his choices and so did many others. As you should know." Kuruk said making her remember the basilisk.

"Yeah I do." Korra said.

"Spirts and man cannot live together as long as spirits like that exist. To protect mankind and the universe...They must remain in their own world." Kuruk said before YangChen appeared.

"Avatar Yangchen." Korra said.

"In my time I was taught that spirits can lead to enlightenment. But Kuruk is right. Not all spirits are good. There are some that have caused great harm in the past. However there are also those who have given up their immortality to become one with our world. I knew one that had become human to live with us but one of her fellow spirits when she died assumed man had killed her and sought revenge. Eventually the conflict ended and he left. But the damage was great." YangChen said.

"So in the end it only proves his point." Korra said.

"Korra, For the greater good of Humanity you must look at the past and see the pattern. But in the end...Only the Current Avatar may choose his or her path." YangChen said making her nod.

Korra soon opened her eyes.

"Get the answers you needed?" Tarkin asked.

"Yup." Korra said as they walked back.

"Korra please..." Unalaq said before she knocked him out.

"We're going back. I don't care how much he knows. He's only doing this for himself." Korra said.

"Good." Tonraq said.

"But what about the Portal?" Mako asked.

"I don't really care." Korra said as she got on Naga.

Authors Note: No Portal opens this time around. And this time Unalaq is in some serious trouble. He murdered innocent people just because he can't accept Change. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually did this kind of thing to his own people himself when he was in charge in Cannon. Now Next Chapter is gonna be just as Dramatic. Oh and uh I got to see the concert of Trans Siberian Orchestra the other night which gave me some good inspiration. Read, Review, Vote, Fav and Follow. REVIEW AND VOTE MY LOYAL FANS! SEE YA!
